PRC resident hung China flag to celebrate its National Day

From our Correspondent

A photo of a Chinese flat hung from a HDB block is making round in Singapore’s internet chatrooms, sparking interesting discussions among netizens:

China celebrates the 60th anniversary of the founding of the People’s Republic of China on 1 October 2009.

An ostentatious display of military might was held at Tian’anmen Square in the heart of Beijing to commemorate 60 years of Communist Party rule.

Boliao wrote with a tongue in the cheek:

“Depending on the date, you will see a Malaysian flag on his right, a Philippines flag on left, an Indian flag on top and a Vietnamese flag below…”

Sotongmee exclaimed:

“Call the ISD and police to arrest the commies being holed up in the HDB flat displaying communist flag!”

Nice-Gook wondered what’s the big hooha about the photo:

“This is silly. Bank of China display its flag all the time. Many in US waved China flag during the tour of Beijing Olympic. If you are a PRC national. What is wrong in showing your loyalty?

Just because Sinkies are ashamed to fly their own flag we should not assume others are too.”

Enfield wondered if Singaporeans are as patriotic as the Chinese:

“He is proud of his country, the question is, are we? He don’t need reminder from grassroots leaders to hang SG flags on HDB for show, he dare to express his loyalty and pride of his Motherland.”

Large numbers of Chinese from mainland China have come to Singapore in recent years to live, study and work.

Last year, there are over 90,000 PRs and 20,000 new citizens, out of which a substantial proportion are mainland Chinese.

It is not known which provinces these newcomers are from. It appears that many of them are from the poorer inland provinces like Hunan, Hubei, Liaoning, Sichuan and Wuhan who take up unskilled and semi-skilled jobs which can easily be filled by locals.

Chinese from the more affluent cities like Beijing, Shanghai and Guangzhou are less often seen in Singapore. Perhaps they prefer to emigrate to better destinations like Australia, Canada and the United States.

THEY can hang their flag, and the land have being taken over by the foreigners.
If U are at the US, and U try to hang your country flag, the american may shoot down your house.
To singapore, the government have sell away own land to foreigners. So let it be, what can U do ?if the government only want money only. WITHOUT the shame of being a true singaporean.

  • chris:

You want to put a Singapore flag outside your flat beware you might get a fine for doing so , i think there is a time frame stipulated during our National Day as to when you can put up the National flag and when you must take it down . if that is the case then putting other national flag anytime is ok than we are allowing double standards. one for locals and one for foreigners .

  • TSH:

Why don’t someone first try to fly a Singapore flag in China during our National Day, then we compare and contrast the reactions? I have little doubt that person will be lynched by the ultra-nationalists endemic there.

  • Political Salesman:

Early Singapore under British Colonialism we hung British Flag. The British are the “Lord of this Island”
During Japanese occupation we hung Japanese Flag.
They also can be the “Lord of this Island”. they conquer.
S’pore merge with Malaysia ,we hung Malaysia Flag.
Become Independent we hung our own Flag.So S’pore this Land has change how many times of flags
In future we have to hung China Flag, this is what we’re going to face in the future Generation, Once again we are going to be a colonial state not a Nation.U can see most of our National Assest had been sold, bought over by Chinese National. This is a theft of things will be landed to other foreign hand.
In the early days if U hung or have a communist items U be arrested,PAP is very anti-communist.They will charge U under “Operation Coldstore”This is the most devilish things the PAP is doing allow such Alien to invaded us.These people have the gut to tell U S’porean I’m here to invaded U.
So at present LKY had said “We are not a Nation Yet” So he is showing sign that he is the “Lord of this Island” not a goverment. Singaporean have been Con.

Singaporeans learn fast. Soon we’ll be putting up the Singapore flags on our National Day.

    Monkeys see, monkeys do.

If other nationalities have so much pride in their flags we certainly can emulate.

    This is something positive.

  • There is a report on our papers today about a Singapore PR went back home to participate in China’s 60th NDP. Let me quote:

The Chinese state media have swooned over the story of Ms Zhang Yuanyuan, a Singapore PR who swopped her cushy life in the tropics for a 10-month parade boot camp in wintry Beijing. Ms Zhang, 28, was the only overseas returnee in the formation and has intrigued the media because she chose not only to return home, but to also take up the tough regimen as part of the parade.

She came to Singapore to study and work in 2003, and got her blue Singapore PR identity card two years later. Despite a job with a multinational company, which reportedly paid her some $4,000 a month, she returned to Beijing last year and worked in a state-owned enterprise. Months later, when she heard about the chance to be part of the women’s militia contingent during a recruitment drive, she jumped at it.

‘Beijing is still my home,’ she told the state media when asked why she chose to return to China. ‘My friends told me that I would have to cut my Chinese passport into half if I take up Singapore citizenship. I just can’t bear to do that.’

  • Exposer:

“Singaporeans learn fast. Soon we’ll be putting up the Singapore flags on our National Day.”

I will loyally put up the flag voluntarily provided that the flag has picture of kangaroo-In-White, Money-In-White, White elephant because that is what those clowns stand for in Singapore. We must treat the flag with realism and truth.

    “Monkeys see, monkeys do”.

If Ah Meng was your father, we understand.

That aside, I still share some monkeys humour with you. Life FOR SOME ONLY is said to be like a pecking order of monkeys sitting on a tree – tribal leader at the top and the serfs at the bottom branches. When those at the top unleash their poos, those at the bottom get a little unpleasant nauseating slap on the head and reminder who the monkey “boss” is. The lower your pecking order, the more frequent and quantity of deposit reminders you get besides the “golden showers” even if there is no rain. Truth be told, the one up on the highest branches, if he or she slips and fell, it will be like boneless waste screaming for a spine and limbs.

How is that for who is the boss and who is the serf in the monkey kingdom?

Fullerton hotel also flys a few countries flags. Is it really illegal?

If a group of fellow Singaporeans and yourself decide to celebrate Singapore National Day in a foreign country, is it considered wrong?

Living in a foreign country or holding PR does not make one a citizen of that country. All these sensational reporting is making mountain out of a mole hill.

  • Vote of Opposition:

Fullerton and other org flying National flags are allowed provided the follow guideline on displaying national flags after National Day period. For the flags rules for the national flags to be taken down is for HDB blocks and residential.

What i was pissed with the PAP Town councils was that they “staged” a patriotic spirit by putting National Flags before National Day and take them out after that, with the help from our TC helpful Bangladesh workers.

I normally put National Flag during national day period, but stopped so only start again this year because I am sick of this “fake” pride displayed from the TC.

  • btan:

It is legal to display foreign flags if you get approval by a minister. So for fullerton hotel’s case, probably someone gave its approval.

When you are in a foreign country, you have to abide by their law. If their law says you can do so, then you can. If their law says you can’t, there is nothing you can argue about.

  • nightsky:

    Vote of Opposition:
“What i was pissed with the PAP Town councils was that they “staged” a patriotic spirit by putting National Flags before National Day and take them out after that, with the help from our TC helpful Bangladesh workers.”

Why is putting up National Flags term as ’staged’? As Singaporeans, we should all put up the flag regardless of political preference.

  • al:

I honestly don’t see the problem with this, and I don’t know why people are kicking up a big fuss. I lived in the West for several years and have seen permanent residents of these countries openly displaying pride both in their host and home countries, flying their flags side by side.

Around the world, Catholic churches display both the national flag and the flag of the Vatican, because they have loyalties to both.

When Chinese president Hu Jintao visited Ottawa (Canada) in 2005, Chinese flags lined the streets, on every lamppost, even as Falungong demonstrators picketed Parliament Hill.

What’s wrong with all that? We need to be mature enough to realise that we don’t always have to see things as a zero-sum game, as black or white.

  • JUST4FUN:

    TO al,
I honestly don’t see the problem with this,

YOU must be someone with many talent, but we the singaporean do not approve the way U foreigners doing, and simply for example,
IF U wear a shirt that belong to U, and other people can change it colour, and U still see no problem at all.
Later U house is blue, and other can paint it red, and U still see no problem at all.
U must be someone great and wise……SINGAPOREAN are not like U,,,,,OK, we have our belonging…….

  • burntbread:

PRC usually are very loyal to their country one. when i was in polytechnic, one of my classmate is PRC. she hung China flag everyday in her room. i dont mind, since she is not sporean and.
when i came to work, few of the colleagues are from China but they hav converted to citizen. these “citizen of Spore” found China is better than Spore. and they dont like to watch or listen mandarin channel and broadcast. cos they said Sporean mandarin is not good enough. these people converted to citizen cos of the previlege. on their heart and thinking, China is still their country.

  • Anonymous:

Wow! That’s good example to follow! We should start to buy Malaysia and Indonesia flags as well! If Singapore go to war with our neighbours, if Singapore lose, we should hang Malaysia flag or Indonesia flag!

  • sokool:

So did anyone inform Ah Gong LKY about this flag thingy & point to the Spore gahment statue that hanging a national outside the month of Aug or foreign flag any time of the year is illegal??

  • Bai Hu:

I see nothing wrong with that.
My advice to fellow Sporeans: If u yourselves are too shy (or whatever reasons) to show your patriotism (by hanging out SG flags), at least don’t stop others from doing it.
Advice to foreigners who hang their flags: Nothing wrong with loving your motherland. But at the same time, remember & be grateful of the goodness u reap from studying or working in Singapore.

  • btan:

    @Bai Hu

I would like to see the reaction of those Chinese people if a Japanese expatriate hangs a Japanese flag in China.

  • Bai Hu:

    @btan

Oh yes! U made a valid point here. I will add another advice now to foreigners who hang their flags:
Before u hang your flag, consider doing some research on your host country’s history first. Don’t hurt the feelings of your host countrymen.

  • Conscience:

The cause of the disgusting behaviour and attitude of these foreigners lies with the our government’s policy makers. For all our sacrifices (some have made the ultimate sacrifice, their mothers have cried themselves dry), Singaporeans are treated as second class and foreigners(even the lowest paid and most unskilled, even those who have committed offences) are treated as first class citizens. The foreigner knows that too, so the behaviour to match. Chinese workers can gather by the hundreds and protest at MOM and get away with it. Myanmar activists can protests by the hundreds and get away with it. It seems like they are above the law. Can Singaporeans protest in this way and get away with it? Even just 5 persons? You can read about it in the papers. Singaporeans have lost their soul, their pride, their sense belonging, their purpose as Singaporeans.

It is going to be like the last days of the Qing Dynasty, where foreigners can put up signs like “Dogs and Chinese not allowed”? This time instead of “Chinese” will be replaced by “Singaporeans”. Our decision makers are in their own dream world, far away from the sufferings of average Singaporeans. I suspect our decision makers cannot understand Singaporeans because they do not feel like Singaporeans; their heart is not with Singaporeans. Shame. Shame. Shame. Where is their conscience or do they have one?

  • btan:

    @Bai Hu

Unfortunately, you missed the point. The point is : if a foreign flag is allowed to be hung anywhere that is not approved space, then it is as good as saying the foreigners have invaded and occupied the host country.

I bring up the Japanese example to show those who support PRC to hang their country flag in foreign counties what it means if you do that.

This is nothing to do with historical context or not.

Another example. What if Malaysia decide to hang their flags along the railway track? After all, the railway tracks are Malaysian soil.

Please don’t bring up examples of embassies, hotels and special events because these are ALLOWED while the others are ILLEGAL.

We cannot even hang SINGAPORE FLAG outside the August month anywhere.

  • Someone else:

Yes, I agree. A China flag hung on Singapore soil clearly has the implicit meaning of an occupation by China.

It’s exactly the same reason why Singaporeans soldiers are not allowed to wear their Singaporean uniforms when they are training in Taiwan or Brunei – it means an invasion.

BaiHu: if you think it is okay, please hang a China, Indian, Malaysian, Indonesian and US flag outside your home. Let’s see how long it takes before the police come knocking on your door. We can even film the entire thing and put it on YouTube if you are so certain it is legal.

In the 21st century, people do not fight shooting wars. There are other much more subtle ways like trade wars and in Singapore’s case, a cultural war. We frequently forget that there are many ways to subjugate a country other than the all-out shooting war.

  • Bai Hu:

    @btan & Someone else

I do get & buy your points of view here. As for myself, i took a less intense view on flag hanging. To me, the hanging of flag is more of a personal show of patriotism. In USA where most of my relatives live, the people & the government do not even bother about it.
I will conclude this good exchange of views between us like this: let the government decide whether the foreigners are allowed to hang their countrys’ flags outside their residences for whatever reasons.

  • btan:

    @Bai Hu on Wed, 14th Oct 2009 9:43 am

The government of Singapore have already decided. It is written in our law. It is illegal to hang any flag (including Singapore flag) in any place that can be seen by public with a few exceptions.

    1. You can hang Singapore flag in the month of August
    2. You can hang your country’s flag if you are the legal representative of your country (i.e. diplomats et al)
    3. You can hang any country’s flag if you get written approval by a Minister of the State.

    All other cases are illegal.

As for USA, they have their own set of law and should not be used as a standard for other countries.
