AMK suicide tragedy: Deceased Ng Chee Kiang used to splurge on his wife who likes branded stuff

From our Correspondent

The deceased Ng Chee Kiang, who set fire on his flat before plunging down from 12 stories to his death was reported by Chinese daily Lianhe Wanbao to be a devoted husband who doted on his wife.

Knowing that his wife loved branded stuff, Mr Ng spent more than $130,000 to satisfy her which caused him to end up in debts.

Colleagues and friends point to marital problems as the likely trigger for the tragic event last Saturday. Mr Ng’s wife, 28-year-old saleswoman Ong Lay Choo, and the family’s maid were out when it happened.

A colleague at Japanese food specialist PTC-Nakajima Suisan, where Mr Ng worked as a manager, said the couple began having problems about a year ago.

Mr Ng was reported to owe loansharks thousands of dollars who frequently came to harass his family.

Unable to withstand his gambling habits, his wife wanted to divorce him. Mr Ng finally agreed to the divorce last month when he realized it was impossible to salvage his marriage.

Insiders speculated that Mr Ng killed his two children because he was afraid that he might not win the custody of them after his divorce as he was a bankrupt.

Some even claimed that Ms Ong had found a new love and was preparing to bring her children along to re-marry.

Mr Ng used to earn up to $6,000 monthly as a manager of a Sushi-chain restaurant. Had he not gambled his savings away, he would still have a happy family now.

eh? how is the materialistic culture a result of the PAP? and will we suddenly become ascetics if the WP or SDP somehow become the government?

  • fair and square:

this is just the prelude..the foreword of a long story
that singaporeans would get to read in the near future.
the have-little now could possibly end up as “one who has nothing”…IR.CASINOS..DRUGS..SEX IN THE “CITY”…LOANSHARKS…
    MONEY LAUNDERING…GANGTERISM…SUICIDES…FAMILY BREAK-UPS…
…NAIVE THIS MAY SOUND AND NOT A FEW MAY EVEN GET NAUSEUOS..OTHERS VERY ANGRY BUT i still must say it once again: LESS GREED AND MORE COMPASSION…for this may even help to resolve our population problem….
sorry if i inadvertantly cause any irritation or indignation
but this is my sincere and humble observation.

eh? how’s materialism a result of PAP policies? every developed country, even your most democratic one, faces the problem of people being uber materialistic.

so we think that if the WP or SDP somehow becomes the ruling party, then we will all be ascetics, that we will suddenly all be very easily contented with the simple things in life?

    i think not.

As usual some people will use every opportunity, no matter how far fetching it is to push their own individual agenda.

The real point of the story should not be about the money but rather why someone think the only other way out is to kill the children. The mentality of if i can’t have it, so can’t you is at fault here.

  • common sense:

Singapore is now like China – Lack of values, IDEOLOGY and moral values.

Singapore now only focus on GDP, everything is measured by Money. Nothing else.

People will have the guts to do all the wrong things, and yet, do not have the guts to do the right thing.

    Think about.

Everyone die only once at some time, demand for coffins wont go up because of IRs, just the more people would die due to gambling related matters.

LHL has to prove that he is making changes doing what papa did not is one way.

What is becoming of our society? First World? I dun think so. We are a world without a soul! Everything is now a mad rat race!

Our ministers have set an example. To each his own. When you are down, dun expect the govt to help… you’ve got to help yourself! Die die your problem!

This is truly uniquely First World Sinkapoor? Manifestation of the all the sickening bad traits of a First World society and the best of a Third World? The worst is yet to come. I am sick of this soulless Sinkapoor!

  • Get real:

Money, endless greed and women are potent cocktail. PAP’s GDP boasting and preaching sublimally for decades poisoned so many minds. No other countries brags GDP figures day in day out except Pappies. In multi-party democracies, any moronic politicians preaching GDP figures will get this rebuttal very quickly – Did we pay your to turn the country backward??

Here is one party and one controlled-press selling the high priest concoction that wealth and the flaunting of wealth is the only way to live – VOTE ME IF YOU WANT MORE OF THE SAME.

i also believe that Sg has this excessive consumer culture. I suppose this works hand in hand with the “boost GDP” no matter what mindset.

Many want to own 1st world world items. But the prob is, are their salaries 1st world? Furhermore with gambling in the picture, it doesnt matter anymore. Even if one earns astronmical amounts, he will lose in astronomical amounts.

“The real point of the story should not be about the money but rather why someone think the only other way out is to kill the children.”

As far as the father and innocent children were concerned, apparently issue of money (or the lack of it) was the primary cause and starting point to the subsequent unhappiness and sad incident.

As to why someone thinks the only other way out is to kill the children, the deceased is no longer around to confirm whatever speculation that is to be made.

You guys blame the Govt for everything. What has this got to do with the PAP? A gambler, spendthrift murders his children and jumps to his death and you blame the PAP!

At least he has 100k in the CPF, Singaporean can spend beyond their means, go bankrupt and still keep all their CPF money!! if they live in an HDB they get to keep the house too. Try that in other countries
