Amnesty International writes to Canadian Prime Minister condemning Singapore for its human rights violations

From our Correspondent

The Singapore government has found itself in the international spotlight again for the wrong reason!

Human Rights group Amnesty International has written an open letter to Canadian Prime Minister Stephan Harper urging him to use the occasion of his visit to Singapore to attend the APEC Summit to raise serious human rights issues with Singapore officials.

Canadian lawyer Mr Amsterdam had earlier published a White Paper – “The Repression of political freedoms in Singapore: The Case of opposition leader Dr Chee Soon Juan” which documents the repression of political freedoms in Singapore and outlines how the Government of Singapore, under the leadership of the People’s Action Party (PAP), has monopolized the state’s apparatus to its own benefit.

The press release by Amsterdam & Peroff was given extensive publicity by major news organisations like MSN, AOL, National Examiner and Reuters as well as global investment and trade organisations like Forbes, Breitbart, EuroInvestor and Bizjournals much to the embarrassment of the Singapore government which published a weak rebuttal to it on a government website.

The letter which was written by Amnesty International Secretary General for Canada Alex Neves, described Singapore has having two realities:

“its appearance as a progressive country with regular elections and economic success; and its record of human rights violations designed to maintain the political status quo of the People’s Action Party (PAP) during its virtual one-party rule over the past half-century. Lee Kuan Yew, now Minister Mentor, has led Singapore in a number of government positions since independence in 1959.”

Mr Neves criticized Singapore’s restrictive laws and defamation lawsuits as well as the recently enacted Public Order Act (POA) which restricts cause-related public assemblies:

“Restrictive laws and civil defamation suits brought for political motives against opponents of the PAP are ruinous to the victims and have a “chilling” effect on potential critics and the population at large…..The result is a climate of political intimidation and self-censorship that deters the expression of views alternative to those of the ruling party and dissuades many Singaporeans from exercising their right to take part in public affairs,” he wrote.

The letter also brought up the case of former Singapore President Devan Nair who was sued by MM Lee Kuan Yew for defamation in a Canadian court for remarks made in an interview article in the Globe and Mail.

Devan Nair described Lee’s technique of suing his opponents into bankruptcy or oblivion as an “abrogation of political rights.” He also remarked that Lee is “an increasingly self-righteous know-all”, surrounded by “department store dummies”.

In response to these remarks, Lee sued Devan Nair in a Canadian court and Nair countersued. Lee then brought a motion to have Nair’s counterclaim thrown out of court. Lee argued that Nair’s counterclaim disclosed no reasonable cause of action and constituted an inflammatory attack on the integrity of the government of Singapore. However, the Ontario Superior Court of Justice refused to throw out Nair’s counterclaim, holding that Lee had abused the litigating process and therefore Nair has a reasonable cause of action.

Another issue raised by Amnesty International is Singapore’s high per capita rates of execution. It described the trials as failing “to meet international standards for fairness.”

The letter ended by urging the Canadian Prime Minister to press the Singapore government to “ensure that the filing and judicial examination of civil defamation suits fully recognizes and upholds the right to freedom of expression and will not be used for political purposes.”

The APEC Summit is supposed to showcase Singapore as a modern, cosmopolitan and vibrant country to the rest of the world, but it ended up being hijacked by human rights groups to pursue their own agenda.

The constant barrage of criticisms and accusations hurled at the Singapore government during this crucial period not only distract international attention away from APEC, but is damaging to its international image and standing as well.

Despite widespread skepticism and doubts about its archaic political system, the Singapore government is adamant that “societal interests take priority before the individual” to justify the repressive laws put in place to curtail the civil liberties of its citizens.

    Errata

“Another issue raised by Amnesty International is Singapore’s high per capital…”

If I’m not wrong, that should be ‘per capita’.

This article touched me so much and gave me so much hope for the future that i cried.

  • Amnesty International Shit:

Amnesty International is a Sham organization. When they practise Selective Criticism they have lost their Moral Standing.

  • citizenofSG:

@Amnesty International Shit – why PAP never sue them, Amnesty International.
Reputation really damage. Come on man, pappies, get your master to act now, we are all watching.
Is this reported in the MSM? If yes, where is it.

  • Its nice to see that the world has spoken up against the many abnormalies in Sinkapore although it is usually one country’s practice to not interfere in the politics of others.

Sinkaporeans simply cannot effect changes on their own given the repressive laws and limited powers given to them, the International community has to help and spread the word.

    Thank you, AI.

I couldn’t hold back my tears when I see this reminder of the past.

Those not affected will never understand in a generation.

  • fair and square:

TR,you said in the article:”SOCIETAL INTERESTS TAKE PRIORITY BEFORE THE INDIVIDUAL”.
I THINK IT SHOULD READ AS: ‘THE “individuals’(meaning their own intesrests) take priority before societal intesrests” .
Hey! don’t include my interest..i am one of “the individual” you mentioned but my intesrest has not been given any priority
EXCEPT in social costs like taxes, coeS,ERPs and a litany of uncountable others!!!

  • Newtype:

But out of all the leaders, why Canada? Why don’t write to the Chinese to stop their people coming here in the first place? I assume some people will argue that China is a lesser devil compare to LKY

  • Amnesty International Shit:

@citizenofSG – Don’t know who you’re calling pappies, but do know this: The friend of your friend may not be your friend, likewise, the enemy of your enemy may not be your friend either. Before you start calling names, please read what I wrote calmly. I have only expressed my opinion of Amnesty International (and have done so in many other places including ShittyTimes).

That is “Amnesty International do not have a moral standing when they practise selective criticism”. It is my believe their agenda are not altogether benign and may serve other propaganda purposes for western government.

So don’t go asking them for approval, or ‘pressure’. You will only lend them your weight.

    Have a nice weekend.

Some people here are just die hard anything but PAP, even if Satan, or Darth Vader run against PAP in a GRC they would also say vote PAP out. It is also this form of obsession with anti PAP that keep PAP in power…

  • Hope for Singapore please:

The letter which was written by Amnesty International Secretary General for Canada Alex Neves, described Singapore has having two realities:

I think it should read ‘as having two realities’..

There you go again, janetnt! Profundities of absurdity to new heights of mourning.

  • Fictional Characters vs PAP:

@janetnt – Satan or Darth Vader are not real. PAP is Not ‘God’.

I would urge All Singaporeans to vote for Anyone who would stand against PAP. Even if they wear ‘Sandals’ to collect forms.

  • x12831:

Why is LKY or the Singapore govt suing Amnesty International?

  • x12831:

The existing laws, legislation and political structure and system are set up by the PAP in favour the PAP; it will be wishful thinking to think that the PAP will be displaced in the next election or the subsequent elections. I have made my choice and do not intend to hang around.

It is NOT the job of Papies to cultivate the opposition. Likewise, it is NOT the job of opposition to cultivate Pappies. Even if you unubstantiated claims that Amnesty International are an alleged propaganda tool of western government, what is wrong getting the sympathetic help of western governments which Pappies is sleeping around with in the first place?

Are western Government that maliciously malignant? Or Pappies malignant to Western Government and Amnesty International? Your argument is like a dog chasing its own tail and angry at being so ridiculously.

Surely, I don’t think Canada has a malignant history of aggressive military occupation for foreign sovereign thoughout history.

INSTEAD THEY FOUGHT FOR WHAT THEY BELIEVE IN FREEDOM FROM WORLD WAR II to Gulf War to Afghanistan, to Korea. Talking about freedom is cheap, sending your citizens to die on the battle front for that cause is conviction of belief. They did that. And for what financial and political gain for themselves??

Canada is credible and New Zealand in the fight for freedom around the world.
