One single slogan for the opposition front: “Singapore for Singaporeans”
OPINION
Judging from press reports, letters to the Straits Times Forum, bantering in internet chatrooms as well as conversations between Singaporeans in the HDB heartland, immigration will emerge as the single most important issue in the next general election due by 2011 which may trigger a mini political tsunami in Singapore.
Though it is highly unlikely that the ruling PAP will be booted out of office or loses its traditional two-thirds majority, even the loss of one GRC or one SMC more than the two opposition-controlled wards will send a strong signal to the entire nation that the tide has turned against the incumbent and it is only a matter of time before Singapore follows the footsteps of other developed Asian countries like Japan, South Korea and Taiwan and make the transition from an archaic political system dominated by one party to a multi-party democracy.
An increasing number of Singaporeans are becoming fed up and disillusioned with the PAP’s liberal immigration policies which has seen our beloved little island being flooded with hordes of foreigners in the last few years.
While the lower income group is naturally disgruntled at the loss of job opportunities and depression of wages by these foreigners, the middle class is also becoming flustered and anxious about the future of their children.
With more young Singaporeans with no political affiliations joining the electorate for the first time and the new media providing a counter-balance to the propaganda and spins of the mainstream media, the next election will be an interesting one to watch.
Though Singaporeans are largely apathetic in nature and disinterested in politics, what the opposition need is just a small group of dedicated supporters to galvanize votes for them to turn the tide around.
That’s what happened in the Malaysian general election in 2008. Every single opposition supporter went around to canvass for votes and they got not only their families, but their extended families, companies and alumni to vote for the opposition.
The percentage of hardcore PAP supporters are perhaps no more than 30 per cent and is dwindling by each passing day. That’s why it needs to bring new citizens into grassroots organizations to boost the flagging support.
The opposition managed to garner 33 per cent of the votes during the 2006 elections. The figure is probably about 40 per cent now which leaves 30 per cent of swing votes to be won by either side.
Fence-sitters are usually politically not inclined and will vote for any party on persuasion by a family member or a close friend.
The opposition should come together and form a united front against the ruling party in the next election with a single slogan, a common platform and one media center to orchestrate the entire electoral campaign.
Instead of conducting separate campaigns on their own, they should pool their limited resources together such that every opposition supporter will campaign for all parties and not the party to which one belongs to.
During the pivotal 2008 Malaysia’s general elections which send shockwaves across the causeway to Singapore, the Chinese-based DAP supporters could be seen campaigning for the Islamist PAS in the rural kampungs and the Malay-dominant PKR reaching out to the Malay urban dwellers on behalf of the DAP.
The opposition should adopt a catchy slogan which is easily understood by Singaporeans and strike a chord in their hearts and it already has its work cut short – the Singapore People’s Party already has the ideal slogan:
“Singapore for Singaporeans!”
We want a Singapore for Singaporeans where every single person born here are entitled to basic rights as citizens of their country of birth – the right to education, the right to equal job opportunities, the right to free speech, the right to oppose the government, the right to afford a home of their own, the right to public healthcare and lastly, the right to retire comfortably and enjoy life after years of hard work.
This is the Singapore which most citizens aspire to, not the present Singapore where we find ourselves becoming increasingly marginalized by the relentless influx of foreigners who have diluted our collective national identity.
While we should open our doors to foreigners to attract the best talents in the world to come and work in Singapore, we must ensure that our own citizens are taken care of first and to be more selective of the foreigners we admit as PRs and citizens.
The elites will always vote for the incumbent because they are the ones who benefit most from the system, but they belong only to a minority – no more than 5 per cent of the population.
As long the opposition is able to sway the middle class and lower income group to its side, it is half the battle won.
Tell the lower income group: do you want to compete with low-wage foreigners for jobs which pay for pittance and not being able to support oneself and family.
Tell the middle class: do you want a future in which your children will find it increasingly tough to eke out a decent living in Singapore because they have to compete with foreigners for schools, jobs and everything.
Is Singapore really for Singaporeans or for new citizens, PRs and foreigners?
Are native Singaporeans becoming second or even third class citizens in their own countries?
Are Singapore men serving two years of National Service and thirteen years or more of reservist to protect the “free-loafers” from Malaysia, China, India and elsewhere who just come here to enjoy the perks and benefits without paying the price which they have?
Are Singaporeans the real owners of their country or does it belong to a small clique of self-serving elites who is more concerned about perpetuating their political control and hegemony for eternality?
The opposition should not be afraid to appeal to the emotions of Singaporeans because they are getting emotional and the next general election is about nothing but emotions.
Regardless of race, language, or religion, Singapore is for SINGAPOREANS only, now and forever!
Foreigners are most welcome to study, work and live in Singapore, but if they want to take up our citizenship, they must be prepared to sacrifice no more than what native Singaporeans have done so.

Now fresh graduates have difficulty finding jobs, and yet govt still let in many foreigners to compete with locals.Employers of course want cheaper foreign talent, resulting local graduates being jobless.
Good article!!
Opposition voters and supporters must unite and help one another. Once we fight among ourselves, PAP will continue to win and dominate us. We will continue to suffer their pro-foreigner policies and eventually be replaced by them as 3rd class citizens.
i’ve been itching to comment abt the jobless graduates.
let me highlight that the situation is really dire, despite of the fact that the pap tried various ways to help these graduates. there is spring singapore initiative that foots 75% of the fresh graduate’s pay when employers agree to take them in.
i bet the pap govt did not foresee this problem when they opened the floodgates to all levels of foreign workers. (apparently, some old man either did not forecast correctly, or his younger staff did not do the legwork…)
of course, it din help when pap tried to white-wash by saying that part of the problem was because these graduates were trying to look for a job with similar remuneration.
singaporeans, how do we entrust our country to a batch of leaders who even refuse to acknowledge “honest mistakes”???
sigh…
Foreigners are most welcome to study, work and live in Singapore, but if they want to take up our citizenship, they must be prepared to sacrifice no more than what native Singaporeans have done so.
Er shouldn’t that be “no less”?
Hey cowards,
Why Great Asia postings are being deleted?
Ha ha ha!
I think PAP’s dogs are much better.
Chiam See Tong supports hereditary system. He is contemplating to bring in his wife to take over him in Potong Pasir.
Chee Soon Juan too is in favour of a hereditary system; his sister already joint him.
Ha ha ha!
Singapore will be like North Korea, Cambodia, India, and Japan etc.
Great job TR. I must praise you for the effort in highlighting our pride.
Singapore for Singaporean is such a natural thing until quite lately. It uses to be a matter of fact type of thing until Singapore is now becoming a public toilet, where every Tom, Dick or Harry can come in to pee pee.
Even a security guard and a school cleaner I spoke to can tell me of our predicament some people is still in denial. Anyway please don’t let them sales talk us once again and give us more bad years. Change is imminent and you are the ticket to change.
PRIDE LEADS TO A FALL.
how true indeed.
all aspiring leaders must learn from the HUMILITY of
Gandhi.
how could he have won the battle against the colonial masters?
it seemed impossible but not with his SINCERITY AND HULILITY,
HIS SELFLESSNESS AND GENUINE CARE FOR HIS PEOPLE.
opposition leaders should put self-interest away if they truly wanna win the confidence of the people.
the best way to garner votes of confidence is by working humbly in UNISON…if not, like elections gone by,the results
would be a lost marathon.
singapore welcomes everyone to work and live on this island…
a paradise for foreigners and hardworking singaporeans
a competitive society for jobs, housing and everything !
a money fueled society !!
Money is very important in singapore
If you have no money,
Shut up
If you have a lot of money
ENJOY your life in singapore
you can buy anything here in singapore with money..
So the rich people are happy
the poor people must work hard and still be happy when you have a job that gives you some money to buy food and clothing and an expensive but affordable flat…
Be happy, rich or poor in paradise singapore !!
I love your article. It tells the truth. I like people who speak straight to the point.
I myself may be considered as elite by others—chauffeured around as a child, home is a GCB, having the option not to work if I want to.
But I also did my 2.5 years of NS- I stayed in camp, took the punishment, I completed BMT, I trained hard and passed every SOC and IPPT thrown at me in those 2 years. I went to OCS, I went to Brunei, I walked the jungles. Till this day, I still have to take the IPPT yearly failing which I get called back for RT. And of course, reservist.(FYI I am not a scholar)
Nowadays, I’m 2 years behind those foreigners who come in to work. And there is no preference whatsoever for Singaporeans.
Who wants a person who disappears and additional 2-3 weeks every year and leaves the rest of the colleagues to do their work? I don’t blame any private organisation if they prefer foreigners over myself. They have their bottomline to take care of.
Thus, I do agree with your point. To level the playing field for Singaporeans, the policy must change. But with the current ruling party, I don’t see it changing anytime soon.
I do believe you are right about the unhappiness amongst the young Singaporeans, especially those who have just completed their NS but are currently disadvantaged(lets not talk about scholars, grassroots leaders etc.) and it does look to me that this will translate into support for other alternatives.
If you, the writer, were to run for elections, I would gladly support you. Your article exudes clear analysis and a logical mind. High IQ, high EQ.
I’m waiting for the elections and hoping for the best too!
These MIW made so many mistakes and they dare to call themselves elite, and dare not admit their mistakes. They lost our trust, labour MP worse still, graduates can’t find jobs, they say a lot of reasons.Really is a dog to their master
And of course foreigners-turned-Singaporeans the likes of Frederic Fantome who do not do 2.5 years of NS and do not have to go back for reservist nor pass the IPPT yearly or run the risk of military detention would appreciate and defend the policies which have benefited people like himself!
And it is logical as well. If I were in his shoes, I too would defend the ruling party! You give me food to eat, I should be thankful. In an analogy: If a person’s mother decided to feed his neighbour’s son, dress him, and educate him, then when she is old she should expect to gain support from the neighbour’s son rather than her own son.
Similarly, as a result of its actions, the ruling party cannot logically expect support from young local-born Singaporeans.
The claims of the ruling party that their system is efficient and better than many is valid. However, the system has been set up for many years, not by the current generation but by leaders of a previous generation some of whom are no longer in this world. The current crop didn’t create the vehicle, they are simply pushing it along.
The system has been in place for years, and the people have agreed that it has been a good system by supporting the ruling party for so many years. However, the issues that are now appearing did not appear previously.
For people like Fantome, I have this to say: Do 2.5 years of NS. Clear your IPPT. Spend some time in the field. Take a bit of punishment. Go back every year for reservist. After it all, then come back and debate. BUT—WILL YOU!?!
“singapore for singaporeans”!
yes,the converse is also true:loyal SINGAPOREANS for SINAGPORE!
vote your caring and friendly neigbourhood sinagporeans for MPs.
they are now mostly found in the OPPOSITION.
the SMART scholars we,taxpayers sponsored because they could study better than most of us,are now behaving more like FOREIGNERS after they came back from their very expensive overeas studies which were sponsored by TAXPAYERS’ MONIES.
DON’T GIVE THEM ANY MORE big money or they “lagi ya-ya”.
Great article but I hope TR can put up some satirical cartoons on the MIW, so that readers can have a laugh while we comment.
Things are getting very depressing here. Many Singaporeans are seeking help at IMH. Could do with a bit of laughter.
Is the writer of this article retarded or what? 99% of the article is complaining about how foreigners compete with Singaporeans for housing, jobs and education. AND The last sentence says we MOST WELCOME foreigners to study, work and live in Singapore and also be so naive to believe that they will sacrifice themselves to take up Singapore citizenship. What a joke.
Anonymous on Thu, 17th Dec 2009 5:37 pm
If I had a low IQ like you, I would also want to remain anonymous.
Singaporeans are friendly people. Of course we welcome foreigners who can contribute. But does that mean we have to flood this country with cheap foreign labour.
Let me put it into a simple analogy that even you can understand.
Suppose you had a headache. What would you do? Take an aspirin. Or maybe two. Aspirins are helpful.
But would you pop in 200 into your mouth at once. I bet you would. However, most sensible people would not. Taking in 200 at once will certainly kill you in an instant.
That is what the MIW is doing. A few thousand foreigners to replace our falling birthrate and those emigrating is good. But to take in 2 million foreigners in 3 years is destructive to this country.
Hope it is simple enough for you to understand.
Anonymous on Thu, 17th Dec 2009 5:37 pm
“and also be so naive to believe that they will sacrifice themselves to take up Singapore citizenship.”
NOTHING IS FOR FREE!!!
Singapore for Singaporeans; Potong Pasir for Chiam family.
Yes, Singapore for Singaporeans for sure… Definitely.. how to you you define “Fallen Talent” here…. MBA going for 2k per month , PHD going for 3k a month.
Who’s gonna suppoer the “Fallen Talent” when they are old, your kids, my kids. They are OUT KIDS ultimatedly…
Enought is enought…. can next election, we need to make over VOICES heard..
i insist: TRUE BLUE SINGAPOREANS FOR SINAGPORE!
NOTHING LESS!
WHY PAY BIG MONEY FOR THOSE WHO ‘SEEM LIKE SINGAPOREANS’ BUT ACT AGAINST SINGAPOREANS???
YOU INSIST,I CANNOT STOP YOU FROM PERSIHING INTO DEEPER WATERS!
VOTE FOR OUR “oWn” people who are willing to be paid lesser but
who would work much harder for singaporeans’ interests!!!
Yes, Singaporeans should ALL vote on this mantra ‘SINGAPORE FOR SINGAPOREAN”, leave any historical baggage of misplaced and misguided sentiment in the rubbish bin.
Singapore for Singaporeans.
Singapore for Singaporeans.
I don’t think I will get tired of hearing this.
Singapore for Singaporeans.
I feel better already.
Bring on the elections. Let’s kick some a**.
we are singapore…we are singapore…let us stand up together and vote out PAP (pay & pay party)!
hope that the other opposition parties will adopt SPP’s slogan.
LKY used it on umno, it’s time for PAP to take their own advice.
PAP slogan “Singapore for FT and PR ”
So what if you disagree ? there is still 67% vote for them. if not send down the army.
@Fm Hong Kong on Thu, 17th Dec 2009 9:30 pm
“PAP slogan “Singapore for FT and PR ”
Huh Huh, you are a LITTLE BIT clever there.
With that slogan proposed by you, PAP would get 1% of the eligible votes in the next election and when they call in the army, ONLY THE DEJECTED GENERALS SHOWS UP.
Surprise in HK, you didn’t learn from the Chinese this expression…melting the ice then melting the tiles (before th roof caves in)
You are a LITTLE BIT clever for a todler
Will anyone of you interested to buy T shirts with slogan:
“Singapore for Singaporean”.
If there is enough interest, I think I start planing the T shirt design for sale ASAP.
citizenofSG on Thu, 17th Dec 2009 11:09 pm
Good idea for business maybe. But on “cooling-off” day, the “thoughts” police might arrest those wearing that T-shirt by sexing up the “funny” laws again in the same manner they treated “biscuits-and-tea” protestors like quasi-terrorists.
@imho on Thu, 17th Dec 2009 10:20 pm
Didn’t the govt is telling us that FT creats more jobs and is good for us ??
Same like GST , is good and it helps the poor.
There are 50th more other things they are telling us its good.
“Foreigners are most welcome to study, work and live in Singapore…..”
I do not agree with the sentence above because that is precisely why Singaporeans are deprived of job and depressed of our wages.
I would rather quota for foreigners to further restricted, Foreign worker levy to go up, especially on S & EP passes because these two kind of work passes are the culprit that caused many Singaporeans PMET to be jobless.
I would also want local Singaporeans to have first priority to cheaper educations, scholarship, and other perks whereas foreigners will not have such privileges.
To: citizenofSG on Thu, 17th Dec 2009 11:09 pm
That is a good idea, we can have Singaporeans wearing them during election days. That should send a strong signal to vote for alternative parties and put PAP in jittery mode. I can’t wait. Please suggest that in other blog or forums to garner more supports.
Singapore for Singaporeans has a nice ring to it. The T-shirt will do well – much better than the Boomz T-shirt I bet.
Where can I get one?
Chiam See Tong’s wife will be joining soon, probably, to take over Potong Pasir.
Chee Soon Juan too has the sister in his party.
JBJ’s son is now leading the new party his father set up.
It seems like the oppositions are trying to make Singapore into a hereditary system, just like North Korea, Cambodia, India, and Japan etc.
If I vote for PAP, I can call it a calculated-risk; or simply, voting for the known devils.
But as for the idea of voting for the oppositions, I would have to consider; the risk could be beyond my imagination.
well,it is the case everywhere, even in USA.
Look at the Kennedys, the clintons, the bushes!
it’s in the blood,Great Asia.
but if you take the PAP,you know your RISKS already,
you only can have calculated risk with the opposition,
right?
Great article! And the slogan ‘Singapore for Singaporeans’ couldn’t be any better. I promise I’ll go AWOL if LKY were to deploy the entire army after they lost the election.
“But as for the idea of voting for the oppositions, I would have to consider; the risk could be beyond my imagination.”
Disenchanted with Opposition Party ?
In Bernard Leong’s own words,
“If you are so disenchanted, why not leave Singapore?”
We should start using PAP ’s words against their own supporters whenever they say that opp party is weak and incapable. Let these clowns taste back their own medicine.
Great Asia on Fri, 18th Dec 2009 12:42 am
If we vote for the PAPies we are voting for captain whose ship is heading towards the biggest iceberg the world has ever since. And there are not enough lifeboats for everyone. Not many Singaporeans have spacious mansions in Australia and overseas, like one MIW and the elites.
If we vote for the opposition, we are voting to remove this captain and replace him with someone more capable so that we don’t end up being sunk. To most of us, Singapore is our only home and we can’t think of moving anywhere else. We have to ensure that even our leaders don’t destroy this country.
If you are headed for an iceberg, any change of course will be a good move. Voting for the opposition is the best thing to do right now, in fact, it is the only option left for those who love this country.
Time to vote for Change and remove the present captain.
Think of our singapore men .We serve our national service hoping to be capable and supportive family head of the home.
See . We still required by law to serve till we step in grave.
What about men who became PR at the older age.Y are they EXCUSED? Is it they are foreign talent that our voted party PAP says Talented?
Do consider the jobs that we singaporeans get.The bosses of company mostly think.Might as well pay low salary some more the men need not take extra leave from the normal routine.-will face less manpower shortage. resort to employing part time men and chuck them when their employees return from Camp.and smarter employer even sack their ex and reinstate fulltime to their covering parttime staff.
The biggest culprit of the foreigner flood is local employers and govt bodies collaborating with them. Many of them are Singaporeans, receiving kickbacks for hiring foreigners. The MOM is turning a blind eye. This isn’t a case of locals VS foreigners, this is a case of the rich and powerful getting richer at great expense of society. Both locals and foreigners suffer under the sheer obesity of our grossly fattening population figures.
We have to unite.Give our Singapore Men a job.Pay them equal.
Give the benifits that every employee deserve.
There is no Complains that Singaporeans do not like to do lower jobs as long as the pay is suited to the duties I am sure every man will work.
Look at our neighbouring countries most have strict laws to employing own countrymen first. Can Singapore follow suit?
I hope so.
Singapore for Singaporeans! 新加坡人的新加坡! Singapura Untuk Rakyat Singapura! is an offical Slogan for Singapore Democratic Alliance (SDA) to be precise, it was an idea from the Singapore Democratic Alliance (SDA) component party Singapore People’s Party (SPP). PAP government should compensate all those who have served NS for the lost years (full time + reservist) before they can continue to talk cock about integrating the new immigrant. The money should come from these new immigrants through a new tax since they have enjoy peace here as the result of sacrifice done by the locally born Singaporean.
Hi guys,
I have designed a draft logo – s4s – (Singapore for Singaporean) for comment. Hope eventually I can get an appropriate logotype, an effort by Singaporean. The draft logo has a hand sign for the letter “s”, I want to create a hand sign that represent our citizen movement, I need your input to come up with a universally accepted logo.
Logo Link – http://www.singapore4singaporean.wordpress.com
What do you think of a hand sign where we curve our middle finger to show the remaining four fingers? Any suggestions.
Thanks.

Didn’t the Government also tells you that your national pledge is highfalutin aspiration of a hoax and your little red dot is NOT a country AFTER NEARLY 45 YEARS OF KNOWING ‘BLISSFUL IGNORANCE”
You should ask your Chinese compatriots up there the profundities of these thoughts of their profound wisdom saying…. “melting the ice then melting the tiles (before the roof caves in)..
I see that you learning not much from your “foreign” experience but then you are a todler probably.
Hi citizenofSG,
Can TR sponsor your initiative? We are thinking of printing T-shirts with the slogan “Singapore for Singaporeans” together with the new TR logo to spread the message among Singaporeans.
We have to start right now instead of waiting for polling day to be announced.
“Can TR sponsor your initiative? We are thinking of printing T-shirts with the slogan “Singapore for Singaporeans” together with the new TR logo to spread the message among Singaporeans.”
Can add extra line to print or not ?
“Singapore for Singaporeans !
Australia for Kangaroos !”
Oh Yes, let’s ship our kangaroos to Australia but then I doubt even Australia want those wayang selfish kangaroos to stain the reputation of the popular country.

Singapore should and must for Singaporeans, if not more people will face what I have experience before when I felt that its not a place that take care of its own. I myself is a fuxking losser, who got replaced by cheaper FT in the past, and had to travel out of Singapore to find a decent pay jobs. Tho I gained a lots oversea, I have lost my pride for being Singaporean, I had to take the blame myself for believing so much in a Party.
Hong Kong , unlike Singapore , their govt really take care of its people.
for examples ,Public housing can only purchase by local and not even resident( like me) or workpermit holder, if i had to purchase a public housing, I had to buy resale and had to pay about additional 30 to 40% due to the “land” tax. this help to ensure low income local resident are afforable to own a house.
GST was scraped in Hong Kong , when the people protest against it due to the reason that lower income tax groups had to pay more taxes and it did not help the poor. Unlike Singapore govt. “GST is to help the poor”.
When the oil price sky drive in 2008, the HK govt cut back the electric rates and provided every housing owner a rebate of about 6000HKD around $1100sing. whereas Singapore govt increase it electric taxes by over 22%.
Most important is freedom of speaches , transparenty and the right to protest over in HK . I myself joint a protest on the street in front of DBS HK . The govt do listen and change for the better.
Now, tell me Singapore Govt say “right” is really right ? there are 50th more good thing they say just like “GST help the poor “
Having a catchy slogan is one issue but it should not cloud why oppositions were not successful in previous elections. They need to clearly mark how they will function differently from PAP.
It is true that elections are almost universely fight on emotion, but in the insulated Singapore context, I believe a clear distinction between the oppostion and PAP policies will be a defining factor. Policies and not emotion will drive the swing voters; which will be ever greater factor as younger Singaporeans get more educated. These swing voters will be more concern on how you will address their concerns and aspirations not just some cheap emotion arousing messages. It maybe true that a lot of people do not enjoy PAP rule or the way they handle matters or belittle people intelligent with their double talks, but how will oppostion handle these issues differently? Opposing is one matter, but opposition need to provide an alternative set of practical solutions.
We do not have much great ideological differences between parties, so election can only be fought at day one from grassroot and policies.
Opposition must get in first, then work out the best policy formulation after detailed analysis.
Right now, the Government’s policies are failing and in a mess.
Opposition should just stake out their policy OBJECTIVES and let the voters decide what they prefer.
PAP has already lost touch with the ground and will lost a few GRC in the next GE. Many people are frustrated by their policies that cause great hardship to the citizen.
