MM Lee should clarify his remarks made in National Geographic magazine to the ethnic minorities in Singapore

Though he admitted to a Japanese audience lately that he is “not doing much work” as the Minister Mentor of Singapore except “forecasting”, Lee Kuan Yew showed why many still consider him as the “hidden” hand behind the nation’s policies.
In a frank interview with journalist Mark Jacobson from the National Geographic magazine, Lee spoke about the ruling party’s liberal immigration and pro-foreigner policies as if he was their principal architect.
Though he said he was aware of the fact that “many Singaporeans are unhappy with the influx of immigrants”, he continued to insist that it is for “good” of the nation:
“Over time, Singaporeans have become less hard-driving and hard-striving. This is why it is a good thing that the nation has welcomed so many Chinese immigrants.” Lee was quoted saying.
Lee described the country’s new subjects as “hungry,” with parents who “pushed the children very hard.”
“If native Singaporeans are falling behind because the spurs are not stuck into the hide, that is their problem,” he quipped.
There is a racist undertone in Lee’s remarks on Chinese immigrants. Shouldn’t the acceptance and admission of immigrants into Singapore be based solely on meritocracy rather than race?
There are only four countries in the world with a Chinese-majority population – Singapore, Hong Kong, Taiwan and China.
It is obvious that China is the primary source of Singapore’s Chinese immigrants for the last few years since the floodgates were opened.
By his outlandish statement, is Lee insinuating that mainland immigrants have a higher chance than other nationalities of being granted Singapore PR and citizenship even if they are less qualified?
It appears to be so judging from the large number of Chinese new citizens in Singapore, many of whom hail from the poorer inland provinces instead of the rich coastal cities which bear a closer resemblance to island’s ethnic Chinese such as Guangzhou, Xiamen and Shantou.
A Singapore PR and Chinese citizen Zhang Yuanyuan was granted her PR within 2 months of application.
There were news reports of Chinese construction workers, cleaners and masseurs being given Singapore PRs and citizenships.
How Lee manage to arrive at the conclusion that these new immigrants from China are more “hard-driving and hard-striving” than Singaporeans is anybody’s guess.
In the first place, they have no choice but to work hard here since they have to pay through their noses to an agent to get a job in Singapore, often ending up in huge debts.
It is both unfair and inappropriate to compare locals who need to spend time with their families with these migrant workers who are forced to work under inhumane conditions in order to repay their debts.
Lee should perhaps quote a few living examples to substantiate his statement that China immigrants “pushed the children very hard”.
A significant percentage of these children from the mainland studying in Singapore come from broken families.
They are accompanied to Singapore by their mothers who are known as “Pei2 Du3 Ma1 Ma1″, many of whom are separated or divorced from their husbands.
Common sense will tell us that few mothers will be so courageous to bring their children overseas to start life afresh without their husbands if there are no compelling reasons to do so.
As they are unable to work in Singapore, many of them end up in the sleaze trade to support their children’s education.
It is a challenge to bring up a child in the absence of a father under such trying circumstances.
Is Lee insinuating that children brought up by single “Pei Du Ma Ma” are more “hard-driving and hard-striving” than locals from traditional families?
Lee’s callous remarks is an effrontery and insult to the Malay and Indian ethnic minorities in Singapore.
Regardless of race and religion, all of us are Singaporeans and we should not be divided based on our skin color.
Though the ethnic Chinese in Singapore are descendants of immigrant Chinese as well, we have managed to forge a common Singapore identity over the years with the other races.
An ethnic Chinese Singaporean has more in common with a Malay Singaporean than a new immigrant from mainland China.
“Hard-driving and hard-striving” are not traits unique only to the Chinese. Does Lee mean to say that Malays and Indians are less “hard-driving” than the Chinese?
Lee’s actions are akin to a father adopting others’ children and praising them for being more hardworking than his own children. Which father in the world will do that?
Lee should clarify what he meant exactly by his statement.
What will the rest of the world think of Singapore’s ethnic minorities when they read the interview?
They may be misled into thinking that Singapore has no choice but to “import” Chinese immigrants from overseas because its own indigenous people are less “hard-driving and hard-striving”.
He should also explain to Singaporeans who are paying his multi-million salary on why he thinks that they are less “hard-driving and hard-striving” than the new immigrants from China.
Lee should realize the fact that he owes everything he has today to the people of Singapore and not the other way round.
And if it is not the “problem” of the elected government of the day to take care of the people who have “fallen behind”, then who should be responsible?
In any other Asian democracies like Japan, South Korea, Taiwan and even Malaysia, Lee would probably be forced to apologize and resign from the government.
He is only able to get away in Singapore because its subservient people are too timid to tell him to “sit down and shut up” straight in the face.
It is time for Singaporeans to show what they think about Lee and his coterie of “department store dummies”, borrowing a quote from former president Devan Nair in the next general election and stuck some spurs into their thick hides.
Whether the PAP gets elected again is their problem, not Singapore’s. Singaporeans deserve a more humble, caring and compassionate leader who truly understand their concerns and work to safeguard their interests rather than this self-proclaimed “forecaster extraordinarie” who goes around the world offending the sensibilities of Singaporeans and foreigners alike with his half-baked bigotry.

If this continues , the one that brought up SG will eventually bring it down . Like the stock market , the downward pressure will be very fast and already on the way down . No way a person so old should be on top of everything and make critical fast pace decisions . However , should first try him on a SG flyer ( slowest moving wheel in the world ) and he will surely take a few weeks to recover .Next ask him to take a bus from his house to work ( 1 way only ) and he will take another few weeks to recover . Singapore learns from US to accept skilled immigrants to boost the economy. In regards of cleaners, construction workers getting PR easily, are there any solid evidences and what are their job positions when they are getting it?

Let us speculate on that a new party in Malaysia promises $SGD 1 = 1RM on condition that they adopt the same Singapore type of government and system. For example,

3. Same transportation cost with high vehicle tax and COE thrown in.
4. Same medical cost. No more RM 5 medical treatment in public hospitals.
5. Compete with foreigners for a place in school. Similar high school fees as Singapore.
6. Compete with foreigners for a job.(If you can’t get one it’s because you are lazy).
7. High handed policies. A system of reward and punishment.
8. 95% Chinese in government and businesses.
9. Work in a fast pace environment with lots of overtime. Need two salaries to survive.
10. Free flow of Chinese immigrants so that the locals would not become complacent.
11.No more affirmative action for the disadvantaged.
12. Meritocracy without diversity.
13.Full time National service.
14.No more Malaysiakini.”Fix” the opposition.
15.Come down hard on public protest and demonstration.
16.No more kampong style living, all agricultural land to be transformed into high efficient production units owned by SPH or Sembcorp type of companies.
Do you think that Malaysians would vote for such a party or system for 1SGD = 1RM ?

The key phrase “welcomed many Chinese immigrants” would be a legitimate concern for local Malays & Indians. Its akin to ethnic cleansing and its not acceptable in Spore multiracial society. Do not forget the Malays are indigeneous here, not the Chinese, we together with the Indians were encouraged by the British to settle here. So yes the Malays get the double whammy again, first the colonials, then this old senile man LKY openly declaring that he is opening the floodgates to MANY Chinese immigrants.

singling out the chinese as an example does not mean that MM lee disfavours or looks down on the malays or indians. why, apparently, did he not bring up the visible influx of filipino immigrants? what if he actually did, but jacobson only included the example of the chinese in his article?
this is irresponsible reporting on TR’s part. an alternative viewpoint is not the same as an impatiently, hastily concluded one.

The main aim of the foreigners influx policy is simply to improve PAP’s chance of winning in the next GE after they knew most smart and disappointed Singaporeans will jeopartise their chance. i am not saying that LKY is or is not a bigoted racist. i am suggesting that this TR article concludes that he is, but on tenuous evidence (from a single interview by a visiting journalist) that people unaware of LKY’s full “track record” may be misled by. pointing out more details of the “track record” would be more substantiative, compelling, and credible.
while TR is achieving tremendous progress within its constrained resources, it would defeat its own purpose of providing alternative credible reporting if its own articles were put together merely to whip up well-intentioned emotion among netizens. singapore doesn’t need another tabloid.

They cant even freaking speak english…at least those other immigrants i see can still speak decent english if not good english (eg. from India, Philippines etc) and…did he mean to say toilet cleaners/cleaners (this is just to quote an eg where i see many of this ‘foreign talent working’ =foreign talent, wow i guess Singaporeans don’t have to study so hard in the near future given that being a cleaner is considered a talent?
And if u say about economy, did we take into account the authenticity and the quality? How many times have we heard news of contaminated food, milk etc happening in China? These pple must be really quite ignorant, quite a pity i must say.
Oh and forgot to mention i agree with the comment that they are only using Singapore as a stepping stone. They don’t plan to contribute back to Singapore in the long run obviously, they’re here just to earn the money and go back once they’ve got enough of it to live a good life back in China or anywhere else. And we have had so many news highlights about revenue leakage and brain drain. Bringing them in obviously don’t solve the revenue leakage at all, it’s not even close to being a solution!
Touching on brain drain, of course the younger generations (esp those who can afford it would go elsewhere where they can get better opportunities), just look at how many of the PSC scholarships are going to the PRCs? And in the end more than 1/2 of them would actually break the bond once they get better offer elsewhere. Seems like the gov’s measure is aggravating these main concern on revenue leakage n brain drain rather than circumventing them.

Californian, here’s something to think about. Up until a few years ago, LKY has always said that Second Language is what separates the wheat from the chaff. He kept saying this to justify denying kids who failed Second Language the right to further their education at local universities. He only changed his tune and announced that it is unfair to discriminate against children who failed Second Language and deny them the chance to further their education locally when all his grandchildren proved to be monolingual. And this isn’t just speculation, this was admitted by PM Lee himself. So, do you think he would do the right thing by sticking the spurs in his own grandchildren because they are lazy, or do you think he shifted the goalpost forward for them instead?
i don’t have a problem with recruited foreigners but people from different countries (other than China) should also be given an equal chance of gaining a PR. and it’s wrong for LKY to say that Singaporeans are less hard-driving and hard-striving, when all of us are infact WORKING REALLY HARD to get a decent monthly income.aren’t that contributing to Singapore’s economy too?

I think Lee’s comments personifies racial discrimination to the minorities in Singapore. There is no basis for his statement neither are there any data to back up what he is saying. His remarks at best are callous and disparaging of the minority races in Singapore. I understand that there is a commission for racial equality and other prominent members of PAP are involved. Will they be convening a commission to scrutinize the remarks made by Lee. This is a clear call for the Indians and Malays to re=examine their position in Singapore. A viable alternative would be to migrate.
singapore must maintain its racial percentage, becoz singaporeans are not colour-blind. politically n socially it will b disastrous if we hv one race taking over the other in terms of racial composition.
