Singapore: Morality and Freedom

By Richard Lu

The foundation of a free society is the general level of morality.  If there is no morality or accountability, freedom does not work.  Freedom is the absence of interference with the sovereignty of an individual and when that morality becomes unimportant, we lose our freedom and we head towards a dictatorship.  This has happened to Singapore.

Our generation of the Sixties and Seventies failed to understand the importance of morality / amorality.  For dictatorship to take root, morality of the people must firstly be eroded.   In the case of Singapore, the erosion was subtle – little by little – employment, economic progress, material gains, the 5 C’s, etc.   How we sold ourselves cheap!

Consider these:

The Newspaper and Printing Presses Act (NPPA of 1974) and subsequent legislations effectively put the media in the hands of the Government.

In 1986 Mr. Francis Seow became the President of the Law Society.  He attempted to involve the Law Society to comment and check on legislations that the Government had then rushed through unrestricted and without appropriate and quality parliamentary debate. Then-PM Lee Kuan Yew had him castigated.   And to ensure that lawyers could not repeat their acts of disobedience, then-PM Lee introduced amendments to the Legal Profession Act that barred the Law Society from commenting on existing or proposed legislation, unless its views were specifically sought by government.

In 1988 the GRC was imposed on us and in 1992 the Elected President.  All these were fiat accompali, thrust upon us seemingly innocuously at first.

The decimation of the opposition ranks mainly through foul methods;

Lastly the lack of transparent separation of powers between the Elections Department and the ruling party should be clear for all to see.

As a matter of fact, Goh Chok Tong admitted in 2006 that the GRC system is a method to enable new PAP candidates to win election easily.  So what is this telling us?  Younger Singaporeans must awake or we will be voting into government either PAP Team A, PAP Team B or even a PAP Team C – the election process merely a sham democratic exercise.

Tang Liang Hong was accused for being a Chinese chauvinist,  made a bankrupt and had to flee Singapore.  Today Singapore leaders’ noses are deep in the butts of the powers-that-be in China.  What hypocrites!

There is a lack of morality in the present Government from the Ministerial salaries to the appointment of the Judiciary.  In a recent interview, Dr. Lim Hock Siew said his integrity (and that of Chai Thye Poh, Zaid Zahari, Dr. Poh Soo Kai, Lim Chin Siong, etc.) was sustained by 17 years in jail but the integrity of the Ministers and Government leaders are sustained by their shamelessly high salaries!

On 18 July 2008, Singapore together with ASEAN called on Myanmar to release all political prisoners.  Political prisoners are not only found in the confines of prisons.  Political exiles, asylum-seekers and conscientious political objectors are also prisoners.  Ayn Rand quotes “The only power any government has is the power to crack down on criminals. Well, when there aren’t enough criminals, one makes them. One declares so many things to be a crime that it becomes impossible for men to live without breaking laws.”  We are arriving towards this end for the Government sadly lacks morality.

Chia Thye Poh, Dr. Lim Hock Siew, Dr. Poh Soo Kai, Francis Seow, Said Zahari, Tan Wah Piow, Tang Hong Liang and others have sacrificed much because in the words  of Aung San Suu Kyi “It is not power that corrupts but fear.  Fear of losing power corrupts those who wield it and fear of the scourge of power corrupts those who are subject to it.”

I now call MM Lee and PM Lee to do two things: to go back to Confucian basics to practice morality and be moral guides to the rest of society.  We call on them to cultivate themselves morally, show filial piety and loyalty where these are due and cultivate humanity, or benevolence.  Isn’t this the gracious society they countenance? give us back our original constitution (minus Elected President, GRC, etc.) as in the words of Patrick Henry: “The Constitution is not an instrument for the government to restrain the people, it is an instrument for the people to restrain the government”.

Finally let me quote my then-1955 hero Lee Kuan Yew and ask him to  self-examine what he said and  honestly ask if he deviated:

”If you believe in democracy, you must believe in it unconditionally. If you believe that men should be free, then, they should have the right of free association, of free speech, of free publication. Then, no law should permit those democratic processes to be set at nought ,…. “ – Lee Kuan Yew, Legislative Assembly Debates April 27, 1955.

Remember the Quote of Mahathir during an interview with RTS the forerunner of MediaCorp.

” WHAT IS PROMISED DURING ELECTION IS BEST FORGOTTEN AFTER THE ELECTIONS ” and he managed to rule with an iron fist which includes ISA for 22 years. Sound familiar??? only different style.

  • very funny:

My father is also a kopitiam “intelligentsia” – passed ‘O’ levels, only reads Straits Times, bought a cheap HDB flat, withdrew most of his CPF, never served NS…

He supports PAP to the hilt. And hates Mahathir to the core.

I wonder if this is a trend among all the “intelligentsia” who have a degree from the “University of Life” ie. lots of EXPERIENCE.

It is funny that they never bother (or bother less about) about the problems in their own country, but only pay attention to Malaysia’s problems and castigate Mahathir…even if he never ruled Singapore…even if he is not in power.

Always talking about how crime and corruption ridden Malaysia is…but always planning holiday trips to Malaysia.

Seems he fell right into the trap set up by the MSM of brainwashing Singaporeans to unite behind the Malaysian bogeyman and to overlook any wrongdoings here.

    So sad…cannot think critically.

  • According to Gibbon, the Roman Empire succumbed to barbarian invasions in large part due to the gradual loss of civic virtue among its citizens.

They had become weak, outsourcing their duties to defend their Empire to barbarian mercenaries, who then became so numerous and ingrained that they were able to take over the Empire. Romans, he believed, had become effeminate, unwilling to live a tougher, “manly” military lifestyle.

He further blames the degeneracy of the Roman army and the Praetorian guards. The Praetorian bands, whose licentious fury was the first symptom and cause of the decline of the Roman empire. He cites repeated examples of this special force abusing its power with calamitous results, including numerous instances of imperial assassination and demands of ever-increasing pay.

I always believe LKY has brought in overall, negatively impact to Singapore. We are spurred in our hide solely because of failure in materialistic targets. LKY did not care anything about morality or social justice.

Singaporean elites are unwilling to serve in the NS unless they are made officers. Even LKY has security manned by Gurkhas(he is the ONLY leader of democratic world that does not trust citizen soldiers). That really shows how much we can rely SAF in war.

Our elites are not able to serve the country without high pay. Even Obama, who is much smarter than our elite accepted probably a lower salary to serve USA, than he could have in private sector.

Any smart people who do not come to view with LKY was persecuted. We have lost many of them through emigration.

All great nation rises because of civics morality. That includes, Rome, USA, Ancient Persian. Their fall is in relation to decadence.

In short, LKY has created a big time bomb ready to explode. The future of generation of Singapore has no future.

“Two things fill the mind with ever new and increasing wonder and awe: the starry heavens above me and the moral law within me.”

A journey without moral compass will just be going round in circles. Even if there are treasures along the way, they will just turn to dust as you could never get out of the maze.

A journey with moral compass may be tough-going, with obstacles along the way. But rest assured that the “pot of gold” lies at the end of the quest.

FUC’K lky. He is having the time of his life, fully in control of S’pore. You think he is going to give you free speech, free association etc? You can think again. S’pore is the bas’tard’s property.

  • Before, our fathers have fought the Japanese in the jungle in Malaya, has fought the British for Merdeka. In times of danger, we are not afraid of shed our blood.

During peace time, we are hardworking and peace loving folks.

That is precisely the civics virtue that made us a proud red dot, envied in the world.

    LKY has certainly destroyed that.

Those freedom fighters against the Japs (the MCP, aka communist) were vilified without even the slightest credit given.

People who stand for their ideals like Lim Hock Siew, Chia Tye Poh (many of them ex PAP)…etc were brutally locked up.

LKY destroyed an independent judiciary since he assumed power. The process was consummated after the abolishment of appeal to privy council and transferring of Judge Michael Khoo, in order to give legally elected JBJ some lesson.

The rule of law is more important than the effective rule by draconian LKY administration though we may reap in short run some benefit.

LKY has relied on ball carrying minister like Mah Boh Tan, Thaman, Shamugan, Lim Swee Say…etc All of them whose absurb rhetoric serve only to anger the people.

And worse, his daughter in law Ho Ching, has squandered large amount of our hard earn reserve.

His elites managers play so much politics that few Singapore entreprises really succeeded. And they put the blame to Singaporean, one of the most hard working and peace loving work force in the world.

HK has prosper under the no action of her governer (laissez faire). Singapore would be best without LKY.

  • V:

If there is indeed no morality and justice within the system, there should be no point working within the system.
The democratic process would have been compromised within a corrupted system.

Then, the only way to bring about change is through forceful intervention, such as by means of demonstrations and protests.

Why do you think the pap is so fearful of protests that they made so many drastic changes to the legislation?

It is precisely that they fear the power of the masses.
Do not let pap hoodwink you into thinking that you are alone.
Do not underestimate the power of a coordinated move to overthrow pap.

People should not be afraid of their governments. Governments should be afraid of their people.

    Very funny-

Like your father I am from that generation that saw what this generation God Forbid will never see or experience.

My mention of Mahathir is a gentle reminder of two OCTOGENARIAN one retired but still capable of driving a sitting PM from office and the other not letting a sitting PM to do his work without being reminded that he is in charge.

Both “Octos” ruled in similar fashion though different style. One achieved a standard for its people who may or may not be grateful depending. The other retired with corruption still rampant and a privilege few enjoying and the rest still struggling especially the minority race and if I have to choose between the two to rule I will still put my bet on LKY.

With a small land base which I reminded friends who are now in USA enjoying Freedom and rights which is not found in the same context we have only 14 miles north to south & 26 miles east to west.We are totally vulnerable with the Rhetorics of RACE & RELIGION being exploited across the causeway, whatever the outcome the fallout would be DISASTROUS for us and this my young friend is definitely not FUNNY in the least.

  • fairplay:

There is a famous chinese saying which I do not know to translate: It says literally “the judege has two mouths”. So this applies to our government leadership coming from the most senior and institutionalised by its followers. They can say anything they like and whatever they say is right! If you question them, they will tell you to refer to rule number 1.

  • Re PeterL

A vulnerable geopolitical situation does not necessary to lead the destruction of real democracy.

Israel was worse off than us. At the time of founding father Ben Gurion, some of his advisors urge to him suspend democracy as the nation was always under siege.

Ben Gurion refuses as his past experience after visiting US told him that democracy is that right thing.

LKY was educated in Cambridge, the bastion of enlightenment. He was taught and has seen democracy workable. He used democracy as one of his agenda to power.

Unfortunately, his deeds after assumption of power showed that he is a hypocrite. A rascal.

And now, many of his lackeys keep on tell us democracy wont work because of Malaysia and radical Islam.

PAP and these people are really liars.

  • Re PeterL

You got your facts wrong again. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Demographics_of_Israel

Israel is just 76% Jewish. The rest are Arabs.

It is not uncommon that PAP supporters like you, and white horse cannot even come to ground with basic figures.

The Malaysia and Islam radical threat is simply a play up by PAP so that it can justify all its human right abuses.

The Malaysian leaders are not interested in fanning racial riots at current moment.

It is evident enough that they have kept their ties with PKMS (formerly UMNO Sg) at low level.

Malaysia has apprehended JI and broken many Islamist cell, including capturing Mas Selamat.

They have never made a serious issue regarding the low economic status of Singapore Malay. They could have did it.

It is a fact however that they do not like LKY. If LKY goes, I think the future leaders will have a easier time in working out a deal with them.

In fact, Islamist and Malaysia is never a big issue. And SG defence budget is higher than Malaysia and Indonesia. We are a threat to Malaysia and Indonesia in terms of conventional arm forces and not the other way round.

It best LKY and family got kick out.

Why Confucian basics, and not the morality already proposed in the Constitution, particularly as it has to do with the spirit of the (constitutional) law?

Isn’t that an imposition on non-Chinese Singaporeans and multi-culturalism’s version of a violation of secularism?

  • CruEL:

I enjoy talking to old folks like PeterL, who still think they have an open mind and able to accept different point of views and more often than not, agreeing to disagree and therefore never ever changing those views despite proven wrong, be it theoretically or hypothetically.

PeterL, the Past is glorious. Singapore was glorious. We live in the present. In the present we live in, we hope to achieve a future. The PAP has done a good job. No one should deny that. They have created a wonderful system. However, the system is flawed, due to the people in charge of the system. But who places these flawed people in charge? Why are these people flawed? Greed? Ego? or just plain incompetence? We see them all in various ministries and statutory boards.

Do you not agree ‘people’ are the most important tool to these systems? True enough, no person is perfect, however, that doesn’t mean we stop trying!?

So you can relate all the achievements PAP has accomplished and you are right, however, they have now boast that they are better even though results says otherwise, for e.g. Suzhou IP. After its fallure, LKY has the cheek to claim it to be a success! When the economy is good, its because our ministers are brilliant, when its down, its external factors.

PeterL, what our generation is asking for is WE WANT BETTER! You can go on about comparing our transport system to the worse country in the world, So what? WE WANT BETTER! You can compare our security to the worse country in the world, So what? WE WANT BETTER!

    Why?

Because they say they are the best, they use that reason to increase their salaries. Are we wrong to want better? After paying them millions in salaries, do we not deserve BETTER?

We think, by putting in more opposition will make them better. Make them accountable for their decisions, to explain and give their basis/rationale for deciding “raising GST to help the poor” for instance.

I have 1 option for the PAP and you PeterL. If you want us young punks to shut up and be eternally grateful to PAP and NOT WANT better, there is only 1 option. Proclaim Singapore to be a communist country. That way, I promise I will SHuT UP. Whats there to want from a communist system? We are already a communist system like it or not. But since LKY has not proclaim it, we have the right to question, to freedom, to want better for my country, my family, my friends and lastly myself.

I personally think that is a brilliant idea. That will shut everyone up, no one will question why they say this, do that etc. PAP should seriously consider proclaiming Singapore a communist state.

You are dead right. Like their beat-up hype and height of deceptions of only “Asian values” relevant and appropriate for governance in Singapore BUT NOT WHEN THESE VALUES APPLY TO THEIR PAY!

And why “Western liberal values” not suitable for Singapore. They left unspoken a few “nasty” truths – money politics, institutionalised oppression, cronyism, no accountability, no transparency and high falutin aspiration pledge solemnly swore on NDP on television for 44 years!! Western liberal values will have none of these!!

This list can go on and on and on.

  • PeterL:

Von Hayek- thank you for your correction, that put Israel quite similar to Singapore’s position in terms of ratio though not the same democracy depending on whose interpretation.I mentioned many times that I am no PAP sycophant and I support an alternative view since JBJ won a seat @ Anson.

Thank you also for your political views of Malaysian politics which I share but sadly disagree.(I am entitled to my views as much as anyone of you are welcome to disagree with me)

CruEl- Yes I may live the glorious past and hope a for a wonderful future for my children and grandchildren. Is that not what any parent aspire for their family?.PAP may boast of their past achievements and current or future vision and why not?? they are the current sitting govt. and they have delivered the good, the bad and the ugly but definitely better than most countries.

Should you disagree vote them out instead of repeating yes we can!!! yes we can!!!with my single vote I managed with others see LTK in parliament, and I am glad that Chiam retained his seat against all odds even though there are some critical of him but lets give him the credit and not deny him his commitments and sacrifices for his ward.Don’t tell me they are PAP lackeys or approved oppositions that is pure baloney.I admired them for their perseverance and guts same as I admired JBJ the die hard going to his grave fighting for whom if it is not for us,his beliefs and our future generation.

Our country and our politics are for us,those who stay because they have no where else to go and those that choose to stay. Our future lies in our hands and those we put into parliament for better or for worse.Do me a CST & LTK and I will retire knowing that my country is in good hands remaining a REBUBLIC and not a future Monarchy.

  • Stuart Macdonald:

I doubt the quote you attributed to Ayn Rand is correct. First it is not in her style. Second I do not recall her ever making a statement to this effect. The url below is to Ayn Rand’s article on the Nature of Government.

It is not sufficient to say that a society needs morality. One must identify what is moral and why. You mention Confucianism and the importance of filial piety. Whist respect for ones parents is important, it can never be elevated to an absolute. In the end it must depend on the parents. More to point it tells you nothing about the values needed to guide your choices in life.

To support Confucianism and Ayn Rand in the same breath is to speak a contradiction. Consider Ayn Rand’s code of morality. The right of every person to live their own life for their own sake, neither sacrificing themselves to others, or others to themselves(which is in turn derived from the nature of man and the nature of reality).

The final paragraph overlooks the words you attribute to Patrick Henry. A democracy, by itself, is just another form of tyranny. A government’s power must be prescribed by a constitution.

Since when has Singapore ever been a democracy ? I surmise only in the minds of the truly ignorant. Singapore has and will always be an authoritarian regime at least until LKY’s passing. What’s the old Chinese adage, “keeping everything in the family” ? Just look at his daughter in law, running one of Singapore’s sovereign funds, it damn near went bankrupt and nary a voice of dissent.
Soon the Mega casinos will begin to erode Singaporeans’ wealth given the Asian penchant for gambling. One wonders how much bribe was involved in licensing the casinos.
Singapore is rapidly receding into the shadows of yester-years, without the wherewithal to truly compete in a globalized economy, where unbridled entrepreneurship reigns supreme absent government interference.

  • KennaSai:

    Stuart MacDonald

    1. Ayn Rand’s quote in full: “The only power any government has is the power to crack down on criminals. Well, when there aren’t enough criminals, one makes them. One declares so many things to be a crime that it becomes impossible for men to live without breaking laws.”

    2. Ayn wrote the The Objectivist political theory which has three main elements –
    a. fundamental rights to live, free from physical force
    b. Government is strictly limited to protecting the rights
    c. Objective Laws to protect the rights

    3. Capitalism is a social system based on the recognition of individual rights including property rights.

    4. In the individual-government relationship, morality must be fundamental. Morality is not a just about filial piety.

    5. Morality as preached by Gandhi, Confucius, Lao Tze, Ayn Rand and all great philosophers can and must co-exist as it is essentially about the same precepts. Even the Ten Commandments are about morality.

    6. The full Patrick Henry quote is: “The constitution is not an instrument for the government to restrain the people, it is an instrument for the people to restrain the government – lest it come to dominate our lives and interests.”

This quote and Any Rand’ are complimentary. Henry and Rand fundamentally believes in the protection of the individual rights which if built up is similar to the Confucian precept of man-family-community-constituency-state-country-emperor relationship which governs all relationship.

  • I can’t comment much as we all knew this issue was coming. With our population demographics coming to an alarming of less than 70% Singapore origins, we will be affected by the different culture of other races. Take driving for example. It would be the best way to describe or character and our true colours as we behave like ourselves. When someone crosses the road even an old lady or a child, most drivers tend to go faster. It’s like telling the other party to go faster or I will hit you hard. On the other hand the pedasterians who crosses the roads (except for child), thinks that they own the roads and they have a name to it. See what this is becoming???!!!. An ill habit of selfishness and inconsidered behaviour. Actually when we think over it, we are gambling with ego versus possibilities. That my friends is phetatic imorility. I don’t think I need to describe more into characteristics.

  • PeterL:

    KennaiSai-

Excellent clarity on simple philosophy. Many thanks.

  • Stuart,

Here is the full quote, in context, from Atlas Shrugged:

“Did you really think we want those laws observed?” said Dr. Ferris. “We want them to be broken. You’d better get it straight that it’s not a bunch of boy scouts you’re up against… We’re after power and we mean it… There’s no way to rule innocent men. The only power any government has is the power to crack down on criminals. Well, when there aren’t enough criminals one makes them. One declares so many things to be a crime that it becomes impossible for men to live without breaking laws. Who wants a nation of law-abiding citizens? What’s there in that for anyone? But just pass the kind of laws that can neither be observed nor enforced or objectively interpreted – and you create a nation of law-breakers – and then you cash in on guilt. Now that’s the system, Mr. Reardon, that’s the game, and once you understand it, you’ll be much easier to deal with.”

  • fair and square:

The above comments by the pros and the cons ultimately lead us to that simple truth: POWER CORRUPTS AND ABSOLUTE POWER CORREUPTS ABSOLUTELY.
i think one blogger here stated that the rich and powerful elites make laws to advance their very own interests…how true!
excessive power and greed would tend towards immorality of the elites and less freedom for the commoners.

  • KennaSai:

    Ted Potts

Thanks for your input. Actually I read Rand many, many years ago and have not quite forgotten her. By the way, Alan Greenspan is a huge fan of Ayn Rand and many of his policies were governed by what she preached.

But alas, the financial crisis! Rand would have said to Greenspan “I told you so”! The bankers in Wall Street like our Singapore politicians lack morality – GREED, the “me and I” mentality.

Politicians getting +S$3M per year when workers merely made ends meet. Is this their idea of serving the people?

Let us ask the PAP MPs – did you stand up to be counted when Chiam See Tong and Low Ther Kiang spoke against the Ministerial pay? If no, then you should ALL resign for you all lacked moral fiber.

The PAP should take a straw poll and ask the average Singaporean on the street for their opinions on the high Ministerial pay and what they think of their MPs. But do they really care???

  • KennaSai:

    Fair and Square

In the case of Singapore, the PAP have power – almost absolute power. It is the FEAR OF LOSING THAT POWER that resulted in the absolutely crazy way the country is being administered – media is controlled and all opinions muzzled, opposition detained and bankrupted; ISA, high ministerial pay, etc.

Aung San Suu Kyi “It is not power that corrupts but fear. Fear of losing power corrupts those who wield it and fear of the scourge of power corrupts those who are subject to it.”

  • PeterL:

The Ang Moh’s are wading in with their post, most likely PR’s if not, ‘how seow’ ang mohs or even possibly genuine Singapore citizens who found a home in this little RED DOT.

Looks like TR is the true non partisan blog accepted by all and I may bow out gracefully knowing that we now truly have an alternative voice with people of substance to Post, Comment and Moderate.

  • fair and square:
