Singapore Courts put up job ad in JB on 18 Jan 2010 seeking Malaysiansto fill vacancies based in Singapore

Written by Our Correspondent

Furniture retail mart Courts had launched a recruitment exercise in Johor Bahru on 18 January 2010 for Malaysians to fill various positions in Singapore according to a tip-off we receive from a reader.

In his latest speech on 31st December 2009, Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong promise Singaporeans that his ruling party will ‘manage and moderate’ the inflow of foreign workers, so that Singaporeans are not overwhelmed by the sheer numbers. said Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong on Thursday.

“We need the many foreign workers who work here, to build HDB flats and MRT lines, to work in factories especially on late shifts, and to help man the IRs,” he added.

Is Singapore Courts recruiting Malaysian workers to work in factories on late shifts?

Let us take a look at the positions offered by Courts to the Malaysians:

courts

The vacancies needed to be filled by Courts are: product specialists, cashiers, operation executives, assistant accountants, credit officer and customer account assistants.

Now these are not highly specialized positions which can only be filled by professionals and talents not available in Singapore or menial jobs shunned by Singaporeans.

Any Singaporean equipped with a ITE or “O” level certificate will be more than qualified to take up these jobs. Why is Courts recruiting Malaysians instead of Singaporeans?

The ruling party blamed Singaporeans for being fussy, demanding and inflexible and urged us to accept any jobs which come along our way.

To be fair to Courts, it is a company and it has to keep its labor costs low and since the ruling party allows it to employ large number of foreigners to keep its business profitable, why not make full use of it?

Singaporeans should not be taken in by PM Lee’s “sweet talk” that Singaporeans will remain his government’s “priority” as even when he is saying this, companies based in Singapore are still recruiting foreigners en masse!

If the ruling party did not open the floodgates to foreigners and give companies so much leeway to employ foreigners, then they will have no choice but to employ Singaporeans.

Instead of saving on labor costs, they will have to innovate to increase their productivity with the local workforce they have.

The period of transition will be painful for some, but eventually everybody will benefit because the companies will be able to raise their profit margin by producing more in the same period of time while Singaporeans are gainfully employed with a decent pay to support themselves and families.

With a higher pay and standard of living, Singaporeans will be inclined to have more children, thereby boosting our birth rate and decreasing our perennial dependence on foreigners.

Unfortunately, nobody in the PAP seems to realize the intangible social benefits of having a highly trained, well paid and happy workforce as they are too obsessed with GDP growth rates which can be artificially increased temporarily by importing large numbers of cheap foreign labor, but we will soon lose our competitive edge once our neighbors like Malaysia, Indonesia and Vietnam catch up with us.

For unemployed or retrenched Singaporeans who are still looking for a job, they will stand a better chance giving up their Singapore citizenship to become a Malaysian and apply for a job based in Singapore in Malaysia instead where Singapore companies are having a field day recruiting their “talents” and “baby-producing machines” for the ruling party.

Let boycott buying from Court. Why we let them make profit and then feed the foreigners.

  • killforeigners:

All Singaporeans, in this case, let’s not buy from Courts.

    Why feed the foreigners?

We have to stay united… to fend ourselves.

  • Dr Syed Alwi:

    Dear People,

I guess the only reasonable explanation is :

    1) The PAP wants to lower wages in Singapore without having to deal with the Unions and Singaporean workers. Lower wages means lower business costs. Never mind that the Singaporean workers find it tough.

    2) Increase the population of Singapore without regards to the interests of Singaporeans.

Who is at fault here ? Singaporeans of course ! Why ? Because you get what you vote for….

  • David:

Can someone please send this advertisement to Lim Swee Say, Gan Kim Yong, Lim Boon Heng, Josephine Yeo, Halimah, Lee Hsien Loong and all other relevant departments to boycott COURTS as being anit-Singaporeans labour force. I do not want to spend my Singapore dollars in Court to feed malaysian workers. Why is courts exploiting Singapore business opportunities and yet not giving Singaporeans the opportunity to work with them? This is a sick country where our leader are simply fearful of every foreign establishments except Singaporeans.

  • PeterL:

As I mentioned in an earlier post that local co. will find ways to circumvent FW ratio to increase their bottom line.Is that wrong??? absolutely not,is it ethical??? that’s left to be seen as LKY advocates that a minimum salary for Singaporeans would mean non competitiveness.

Moral of story for ITE/Olevel or less fortunate??? “HEADS YOU WIN & TAILS I LOSE”

Lets look at crux of the issue. Why can’t the government implement a minimum salary for Singaporeans and increase the FT/FW ratio.Once the ratio is met for Singaporean min.salaried workers, the companies can employ all the FT/FW they need. Its a win-win situation.Again I repeat will the companies Local & Foreign adhere to this without thinking ways to circumvent to cut cost??? will LKY agree to a minimum wage for Singaporeans??? YES, over his dead body???

  • rc:

“Instead of saving on labor costs, they will have to innovate to increase their productivity with the local workforce they have.”

what’s stopping them from saving on labour cost AND innovating to increase the productivity of the cheaper foreign workers so that their profit margin becomes even larger?

or more importantly, should they be stopped from doing so?

“With a higher pay and standard of living, Singaporeans will be inclined to have more children, thereby boosting our birth rate and decreasing our perennial dependence on foreigners.”

the causal link that higher pay and standard of living will result in more Singaporeans having more children. people in my grandparents generation had a lot more children. yet my parents earned a lot more than they did. before one starts screaming that this is because of LKY’s population policy then, this phenomena is generally true in many developed countries. even in India. more well to do families in fact tend to have less children than those who are not so well to do.

so the relationship between income and number of children one has appears to be an inverse one. of course this is stupid logic. i don’t think income is the sole determining (and perhaps not even a major) factor resulting in people not having more children. societal values play a far bigger role.

  • krankie:

This is really getting more absurd. They are really damn smart indeed.

Please continue making the foreigners richer and us Singaporeans “fussier” by increasing the bills, HDB “affordable” and the list goes on and on and on………………

Those people use the SGD salary and can buy a bungalow back in their country. We’re all still struggling for A CHANCE to choose an “affordable” HDB flat, and still have to pay it off till we’re 50 plus. Totally doesn’t make sense!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • LehmanBrothers:

    //rc

Time series data is not a good econometric approach to investigating this relationship, because the key factor is whether increasing income at present would increase the birth rate as well, and not how the birth rate has evolved over time. What we need is cross-sectional data that compares the number of children borne by Singaporean couples and incomes at different age groups, ethnicities, education levels, and so on.

I don’t have any of this data, but based on anedoctal evidence, I do believe there is a weak causal relationship between incomes and birth rate.

  • john:

A big thank to people provide this information. I will stop buying things from COURTS and only buying thing from companies that create employment for our own people.

  • KennaSai:

    Dear Singaporeans

    1. Let Courts come out with a clear honest statement regarding this recruitment effort and explain to Singaporeans why they are doing this.

If they fail to do so, then we must boycott them. Send them a clear signal that Singapore is for Singaporeans. If they want to profit from Singaporeans, they must reciprocate in kind as well. It is not going to be a one-way street from now on.

    2. Workers must ask and pressure their union leaders for an explanation for the discrimination. Union leaders likewise must pressure NTUC for an explanation. NTUC leaders must lead by example.

    3. Retrenched workers must immediately demand that their union leaders do something for them. They must see their MPs and register their unhappiness. They must also go to the Manpower Ministry to register their complaints.

    4. Let us ask NTUC – Lim Boon Heng, Lim Swee Say, Halimah Yacob if thy are aware of this recruitment exercise and policy by Courts.

If so, what actions are they taking against Courts as employers.

If no, they must explain to the workers why they are not aware it. Unless of course all this talk of tripartite-ism is rubbish.

If they cannot explain either, then our workers must boycott the unions by withholding subscription and then resigning from their unions as a final solution.

    5. Ministry of Manpower must explain why Courts discriminate in their recruitment effort and what action they are taking against Courts. Unfortunately we are unable to do anything to this Ministry.

    6. We then must ask PM Lee and MM Lee for an explanation. If they “talk cock” then we start a campaign to get workers to get militant and go on strike if necessary. Workers must take the unions back from the PAP.

    7. Lastly, let us vote PAP out of office.

I must congratulate TR for the excellent reporting.

The problem does not lie with Courts…..the problem lies with PAP !!!

PAP has fed companies here unlimited cheap foreign labour for too long. It has become addictive like heroin.

  • KNN:

@Kenna Sai you really kenna sai, why need such long list. Just point#7, vote the PAP out and all the above are unnecessary.

  • Dr Syed Alwi:

    Dear People,

I think the problem is that the Government tacitly allows this sort of ultra-capitalistic behaviour. The Government wants to reduce the cost of business and attract more investments. Unfortunately – they have gone too far by allowing businesses to hire foreigners at lower wages – thus making it unattractive for businesses to employ Singaporeans. As for our Unions – they are just mouthpieces of the Government.

The way I see it – this is what happens in a one-party state. It is only when the ordinary people have political power via a strong Opposition – that we can keep the Government in check. As it is – what is happening today should be chronicled as a reminder to future generations of the dangers of a one-party system.

    Regards
    Dr Syed Alwi

  • Get rid of Lousy Foreigners:

Actually you could get rid of this type of third world foreigners easily regardless of whether you vote out PAP or not. Since 80% of the affected working class Singaporeans are also HDB flat lessees, they should just increase the subletting rent to foreigners by 100% to 300%. If we can’t beat them due to lower wages, we force them to join us with the same high cost of living of Singaporeans. The Government had already fire the first salvo by increasing their childrens’school fees:

    http://www.channelnewsasia.com/stories/singaporelocalnews/view/1026209/1/.html

I can only think of so many advantages and no disadvantage at all for Singaporeans by raising the rental fees for foreigners:

    1. So far the relentless influx of foreigners only benefited the PAP, civil servants (stable job & high salary) and employers (low business cost and more profits). The ordinary working class loses out. Raising rental fee by at least 100% will ensure that the working class Singaporeans can benefit from the influx of foreigners too.

    2. When the foreigners’ cost of living is increased in Singapore, they can no longer accept third world standard of salary in Singapore. When they asked for Singapore standard of salary, who do you think the employer will employ? The Singaporean or the foreigner? So you see, raising the rental fees for foreigners is the real solution to create jobs for Singaporean PMETs.

    3. HDB now require every subletting case to be reported within 7 days. Failure to comply means a fine of up to $3000 for first offender and compulsory acquisition of your flat for repeat offender. It is only right that we increase the rental for the extra administrative work and risk involved.

    4. No Singaporean would complain about the extra income.

    5. It is entirely logical, practical and legal to increase the rental. The rental is a private agreement between owner and tenant and the owner is free to decide his own fate by increasing the rental appropriately. The foreigner problem can also be solved by giving an alternative to those Singaporeans who are afraid to vote out the PAP.

Why is Courts not working with NTUC, grassroots organizations and also Malay organizations? • Vote of Opposition:

Not only Courts, there are also MNCs such as Seagates and some wafer fab factories only wanted to employ M’sians as they are cheaper than Singapore!

  • KennaSai:

OPEN LETTER TO EMPLOYEES OF COURTS

Dear Employees of Courts and our fellow Singaporeans

We are sorry to advocate boycotting Courts with regard to their recent recruitment drive for Malaysian workers.

We know that if this action is carried to its extreme, it would mean that you may loose your jobs and that your families would suffer.

    Please pressurize your employers to:

    a. abandon the trecruitment exercise;
    b. apologize to Singaporeans;
    c. come clean with a honest explanation (even if it is unfavourable e.g. cheaper to employ Malaysians); and
    d. undertake to be fair in all policies in future including employment.

The boycott action is not targeted at you Courts employees. We are also not against Malaysians. It is about fairness and discrimination.

Finally we have to think Singaporeans first and Singapore second.

  • I just don’t know what is wrong with some of these Singaporeans. And I don’t think I am not wrong in saying that they behave like spoilt kids from rich families. They are picky, selfish and greedy.

I’m sure Court must have plenty of bad experience with Singapore workers for them to look for Malaysian workers. Personally, I like the Malaysians. To me, they’re still my brothers, sisters and good friends even though we’re from two sovereign countries run by two different governments for the last 48 years. Our culture is similar, our food is similar and even our English language accent is similar, in fact, our values are about the same.

The top scorer in our recent public exam comes from Malaysia and two out of three doctors in our hospitals were born in Malaysia as reported here in TR. Many of our engineers and business people are also Malaysians or ex Malaysians. And many of our past and present politicans were born there as well.

These guys appreciate our generousity and are very hard working. They have tasted Apartheid and are treated as 2nd class citizens in their own country of birth when their government would accept Muslims born elsewhere, esp. Indonesians, as first class citizens. In fact, we’re the beneficiary of the Malaysian govt’s racial policy. We don’t have to pay for their education and we get their best, the Chinese and the Indian kids. And if ever there is a war(God forbids) between our two countries, I would say they would root for us.

I say, let them come, the more, the merrier lah. At least in our country, they can call God, Allah and their churches or temples won’t get torched, stoned or vandalized.

    Assalmaulaikum!

  • Lame post.

Court’s recruitment drive stems clearly from a commercial viewpoint – maximize profits and minimize costs. If someone is to be blamed – it should be Courts – *”worming” its way through a labour+legal loophole and trying its best to $benefit$ itself, at the expense of Singapore* – milking Singaporeans’ money with MINIMAL contribution back to the society.

Please do not try to “politicise” any tom-dick-harry issues.

By the way – I do not agree with this.
“temporarily by importing large numbers of cheap foreign labour, but we will soon lose our competitive edge once our neighbours like Malaysia, Indonesia and Vietnam catch up with us.”

We should not view our ASEAN neighbours’ progress in a negative light – rather we should be joyful. Global economics are filled with major players, in order to survive and thrive – we have to combine our resources and compete as a region (i.e. EU, East Asian, etc…). The trick is to both promote the growth of ASEAN and transition from working HARD, to working SMART – hence consistent innovation and leading ASEAN’s progress – i.e. the “brain” of the body.

Singaporeans in general, worked VERY hard – but not many – worked VERY smart – that’s the difference.

Despite wages under competition with 3rd world foreigners,

Despite rising Costs even during financial crisis,

Despite not knowing the cost of construction of HDB flat such that they continue to wonder what is meant by generous subsidy,

Despite the LOSSes and Boo Boos, such that they do not really know what goes on,

    Despite so many other things,

Big companies like SIA recruit cabin crew from all around Asia but they do PLAY FAIR. They advertise all over the local press and also in Malaysia. SIA does not play hidey games where Spore citizens are ignored.

Come on Courts, play the fair game!

  • Why PAP?:

    There are two issues here

First what is the gahmen’s stand on this, do they support or encourage this, if so what are we the citizens of Singapore going to do about it when the time comes for us to decide if we want them to remain in-charged. If they do not support this fine, what exactly are they going to do and by when?

Second, Courts, if this company dont give a damn about its customers it wants to reap profits from, why on earth do we want to enrich its pockets by buying its products. We should react with our most powerful weapon which is our wallets. Stop buying stuff from Courts full stop.

They are still here because of our free for all labor policies. Stop them from employing foreigners, they will wind up and shipped up. What to do Singapore without these investments will sink to the bottom of the sea, hence you lousy Singapore workers better watch out?
In short you are not wanted at all.

Kind of laughable when I read the comments.

This is because when the time comes to face the PAP politicians or to vote them out to show your displeasure, majority would just keep quiet and play dumb, like nothing is wrong.

And the best you can do is degenerate the Foreigners? Because you know the foreigners won’t complain or fight back, unlike the PAP who will sue you or threaten to jail you. What Bigots!!!

It would be interesting when the next GE comes. The same people who complain will probably vote PAP again and for what? For a clean estate and shiny new lifts, so you can sell your HDB flat for a better price?

  • Why PAP?:

    incredulous

Agree with you too many people just enjoy complaining but chicken out when it comes to the time to decide, a fair number dont even get the chance to go the ballot also.

However this time around I sense it is going to be different, not that Papaya gang will be voted out but they really made too many mistakes and behaves like we are all idiots my guess is that they are going to loose like they have never ever seen before but not enough to put them out of power.

To those who are really fed up dont just talk act as well.

    Dear PAP Supporters,

The PAP is wrong when they depress labor costs by allowing the influx of cheap, foreign labor. The way forward is to pressure companies into making productivity gains that can lower business costs.

Whats the point of having MNC’s etc set up business in Singapore – BUT – having them employ only foreigners and not Singaporeans ? Might as well they don’t set up shop in Singapore because their presence does not benefit Singaporeans ! Without a meaningful employment – Singaporeans simply CANNOT afford the high cost of living in Singapore. Singapore may be pretty – but for whom ? Not Singaporeans !

Allowing the influx of cheap, foreign labor is NOT they way forward because ONLY the companies benefit and NOT Singaporeans. Lets not forget that there are also SOCIAL and POLITICAL implications of a large presence of foreign workers.

Productivity gains – is the way forward.

    Regards
    Dr Syed Alwi

  • Chin Tu Lang:

Doing business in Singapore is never cheap. Rental took up a large chunk of the overhead. Therefore, employers will need to reduce costs and hiring FT with lower wages is one option in order to sustain their business. Why is rental so expensive in Singapore, this question we need to ask PAPies.

Lets see how they “Tackle” and find jobs for these lot of unemployed SGreans.

With this ” Controlled” Datas,…at least the “TRUTH” of the situation can be “Verified”.

It benefits all Parties…Jobless Sgs, Pro and Opp CZs.

    How about considering this move?

  • Singaporean:

    Yes boycott Courts !

  • Silverelf:

Hi JL, according to one example posted in the comments above, an account assistant used to bring in $2100 but now Courts is only offering $1300.

If a wholly Singapore staffed company means that the accounts assistant’s monthly pay is $2100, then I am sure that accounts assistant would be able to pay 15-20% more for the appliance.

  • With the “Controlled” environment as suggested above…we can further proceed with other datas gathered, ie why successful…or why not successful ?
What was the salary offered ?
These datas and info can easily be “extrapolated” and linked to Cost of Living, HDB prices…etc.

These are infomation ( True Grd infomation) that we need to really understand and gather from ground response.

They are also “Bullets” good for “Debunking”….unjustified truths or claims made by PAPs.

Notice how certain issues…when we chase for datas..they kept quiet or ignore ?..ie Cost of building HDB.

Well…when it comes to Job seeking….collation of datas is simple …but an “effective” tool for “Challenges” ahead.

    Especially, the coming GE.

  • Hi Papsmear,

That’s a good idea. Readers are most welcomed to share with us their personal experience of looking for a job in Singapore or their companies employing FTs to fill positions which locals can fill and we will spin a story out of it.

  • TR, thks for yr response.

i am however refering to TR specifically to “SPIN” a section with the following Headlines:

To all Unemployed SGs or Fresh SG Grads , you are kindly invited to submit your resume and out TR ,T&C forms.

We at TR, will collate your info and send your request to relevant Gov’t Dept ( CDC or WDAa ),to help secure or arrange an interview for you.

This is a “Citizen job Assistance and Nation Serving” exercise. Its intention are Twofolds.
    a) Foremost and top priority – to help you secure a job.
    b) To collect data in return – to investigate Job market profile, salary offered to local, type of jobs offered and or avaliable to specific age/skills,duration taken for a successful match..etc.

ALL TRUE BLUE SINGAPOREANS are welcome to particpate in this new service. Its a Win , Win for all.

    ….something to this extend ….faham???

  • starving survivor:

NTUC recently said that we need to be ‘cheaper, better, faster’. Now I know what they mean. Young & expensive Singaporeans will lose out to young & cheaper foreigners. Old & cheap Singaporeans will lose out to young & faster foreigners. Overall, it’s a better strategy for companies because it’s a win-win situation for them to make more money. So why is more foreigners working here in the first place?

  • Owner and founder of Courts is not even Singaporean to begin with, what makes you think he will bother with Singaporeans KPKB on the internet about his hiring policies?

The way the CEO sees it, it won’t make a diff if he hired a Filipino to be his HR director if he’s happy with the qualifications…or the cup size, or whatever criteria he deems fit. More importantly, if hiring that person can drive his costs significantly lower as opposed to hiring a local, it’s a bonus.

Court’s main line of business is CREDIT-LENDING, not furniture retail, BTW.

On a seperate note, I thought I saw the blurb for this story somewhere about local “MNC” hiring foreign workers. In my opinion, Courts is not an MNC– an MNC needs to derive more than a quarter of its revenue from overseas operations, and I don’t think Courts is there. It’s a local “large company” yes, but MNC status, I think Terry O’Connor better be more humble. :)

  • Squeezed:

Yes, I will boycott those companies hiring only FW. Companies like Levis … now Courts

  • SimLim:

well guys, if you do your own research, stuff in Courts is overpriced. get it from local dealers.

about the hiring of foreign workers, it’s just not fair to locals…so what do foreign companies do…? build a HQ office in sg, and then hire foreigners…they break the productivity structure like this to get even more savings. the govt must have overlooked this when they changed this policy.

for me, i’ll just carry on having this measly 800 bucks per mth salary and try to live on it…

  • JJ:

I’m not going to visit Courts anymore.

  • JJ:

It would be good if Temasek Review allows us to forward this and many other great articles by clicking on a ‘Send’ Button. This way, it would be easier to reach out to a wider audience!

  • euphoria:

I have not gotten anything from courts for a while. I still prefer shopping in BEST denki! After reading this article, i am sure my preferences with BEST is right :)

  • Frankly national service made many singapore guys into wussies and pussies….

the problem is that the wussies and pussies remember who made them into this…

and to those we remember, if you ever call us out to go against the people of singapore….well….are you feeling lucky?

You have pushed us too far. YOU GODDAMN GREEDY PIGS!!!

  • euphoria:

I wonder have they ever tried to find any singaporeans for such vacancies before having to get them from JB.

  • AM:

Did the TR Editors sent an email to Courts on this issue?

  • CW Teo:

My wife lost her job in Nov last year. A friend of hers recommended her to work at Gain City as a Retails Sales Assistant. I was shocked to find out that Gain City only offered her basic of $800. That’s why S’poreans are not interested to take up such jobs.

Dear fellow SBBS (Singapore Born & Bred Singaporeans). If you’re looking for employment, S’pore is not the place anymore. If you do not have the means to migrate, you will have to squeeze your creative juices to come out with a small business be it which ever trade your’re in.

We shall wait for the day to come when we will kick the pappies’s ass real hard during the G.E.

  • Jas:

wah! they really cannot find the right candicate here? or there is no one who wants the job offered by them????…. i guess people can see the truth of the company just by looking at the way they advertise for job… no local wants the job as such they need to recruit elsewhere… locals do not believe in them … so by going overseas are they able to pay lesser? can’t they employ locals and pay higher… but then i know their pay packages is not fantastic at all… yes we should boycott COURTS!!!! just full of craps….

  • Just boycott until Courts Furniture can guaranteed that 99% employment reserved for Singaporean for both retail and office.

  • Meow:

Courts hires cheap labour so that saving can pass to u and give u the lowest price ok?
