SM Goh: An army of sheep led by a lion is stronger than an army of lions led by a sheep

In a speech made yesterday to graduates of the first batch of youth leaders from a leadership programme in Marine Parade GRC, Senior Minister Goh Chok Tong says it “is important to have good leaders in four sectors of the country – political, public service, business sector and the people sector.”
He quoted an ancient saying on the importance of leadership:
“(The ancient saying is) ‘an army of sheep led by a lion is stronger than an army of lions led by a sheep’. In other words, leadership is critical in battles; the leadership qualities, the courage and the ability and getting the team to follow you is crucial.”
SM Goh also said that leadership is important in generating economic growth for the country:
“If you track the performance of a country in the last 30 years, you will come to the conclusion that there is a co-relationship between the leadership of a country and economic performance of the country. The better the leadership, the better the government, more enlightened, more visionary. The more honest the government, the better the economic performance,” he added.
Singapore’s ruling party has the propensity of linking its performance to economic indicators like GDP growth – a certain percentage of their multi-million annual pay is pegged to the nation’s growth rates.
However, economic performance does not necessarily translate into a higher standard of living for its citizens. Many prominent economists including Nobel Prize winner Joseph Stiglitz has spoken out on the limitations of GDP which fails to take into consideration the welfare of the people.
Singapore is the second richest nation in Asia after Japan, but its people do not live the life befitting of a first world nation. While Japan has the lowest income gap between the rich and the poor among developed countries, Singapore has the highest.
A key reason is that we are a flock of hapless sheeps led by a small group of greedy lions for far too long. Being predators by nature, lions are perenially obsessed with keeping their stomachs full all the time and the poor sheeps will have little choice but to serve as fodder for them.
We need a people-orientated government – an army of sheep led by leaders within its flocks instead of lions from elsewhere. Only then will we be able to reclaim our rights as citizens of this country we call home.
As for SM Goh, he should not forget the fact that he is not a lion too, but a sheep like us being led around by the only real lion in Singapore.

CSJ also said a few years ago that there were three factors needed to keep sheep in control.
1. There has to be fear: once there is fear, no sheep will dare to break out of line and act according to their own desires.
2. There has to be a witholding of information: all the sheep have to be looking down, such that all they see are other sheep going in the same direction, allowing the herd mentality to take over.
3. It helps to have some running dogs around to keep the peace.
When the election comes around, Singaporeans will have the chance to show the entire world whether we are sheep or lions.

Looks like SM Goh’s statement is very relevant ie since our Modern Singapore independence from Malaysia, the PAP has successfully turned all of us Singaporeans into sheeps and looks like it is time to show him and the PAP that we are not sheeps but wolves in sheep clothings (like our friends in Malaysia who gave BN-UMNO hell and denying them two third majority in the last General Election and since then we have seen BN-UMNO breaking into pieces and the latest being behind the burning of Christian churches).
We the local born Singaporeans are not stupid or blind, and can be taken for good rides now. Just tell me how many of us really believe our Minister Mentor Lee Kuan Yew telling us to study and speak Mandarin so that we can tap China and her 1.2billion people, honestly how many of us can really go to China to work, do business-open factories and offices or study. Conversely, we have seen a huge rise of new Singaporeans ie those from China and my fear is one day, our Modern Singapore will be ruled by them, perhaps I was wrong in writing my fear of our Modern Singapore being ruled by the second minority Singaporean Indians.

The Lion and the Sheep
A Zen Story
(after reading, you may ask, who are you metaphorically in this tory, the lion or the sheep?)
In the shadow of a mountain, a herd of sheep lived and grazed on the cool, green grass. One day, close to a tall oak tree, there lay a small copper-colored lump of fur. The ewe bent down sniffing carefully but the lump did not move. Others began to gather around listening, curious, cautious because you never know what dangers may hurt you or the others in the herd. The ewe tried prodding the lump with her nose but it wouldn’t move. She could see its small chest rise with each breath, so she decided to lie down beside it to give it warmth and see if it would wake up. Tired of standing around waiting, the rest of the sheep moved to graze on the tender grass nearby. As night fell, the small furry bundle began to stir, the ewe licked its face and it nuzzled closer finding warm milk to drink.
Time went on and the ewe continued to take care of the foundling as part of the herd. All the sheep could see that this animal was different. The animal was taller than the biggest ram and her coat was the color of the warm, summer sunset rather than the clouds. Her copper-colored face was broader and her mouth was filled with big, sharp teeth. But she went along with the herd up the mountain paths, drank out of the streams and nibbled the grasses like all good sheep.
She was a lion. But living her life among sheep, she only knew sheep. The sheep never having seen a lion, did not know she was a lion. They all lived together in the same meadow eating, sleeping and moving as a heard. She became very good at spotting dangerous animals, so she guarded the herd at night and moved in front of the herd during the day.
Until one day, on the meadow, a sound rang out and the herd ran together for safety, except the copper-colored female. She stopped and turned toward the noise. Around the tree, came the largest beast they had ever seen. The herd bunched closer. Out in front, she moved toward the strange beast. The ewe bleated out to warn her but she kept going, stopping inches away. A quiver ran through the herd. The copper one looked at the beast unafraid. The beast saw itself in the other and nodding its head went to the stream. She followed. As the strange beast bent down to drink, she saw her own reflection and looking over saw the face of the beast in the still water. The images looked alike. Shocked, she drew back from the edge of the water and toward the herd. But the big beast stepped into her path blocking her way.
The beast roared and as the other sheep backed further away in fear, she nodded in understanding. She listed to the stranger’s message, where the others heard only terrifying noise.
The stranger said, “Don’t run away from who you are. You may have grown up here with a herd of sheep, but you have grown into a beautiful lion. Lions are strong, independent and brave. There are many more things that you can do, places you can go and other animals than the sheep and this safe, green meadow. Come with me.”
She had always known she was different from the sheep. But she had grown up living a sheep’s life. She liked the cozy security of the herd but not the grass. She liked moving about the mountain but she would like to see higher, go farther and sometimes the calls on the wind stirred restlessness inside her she did not understand. Now she could see her true self for the first time reflected in the eyes of the lion. For the first time in her life, she was not different but part of another family, one that she has yet to discover. She had a choice, stay with the safety of what she had been taught with the herd or honor her true self and strike out with a stranger into anew world.
The ewe stepped forward and said to her, “Many years ago, I found you dying under a bush and I could not let you starve to death. So, I nursed you and kept you warm in the safety of the herd. Now it is time for you to go your own way. Make your life your own; your own choices not those of the herd. You’ve always helped done your part here. Now you must do your part out there. I knew this time would come and now that it has, I can say that I’m proud of you and I know you have everything you’ll need right there inside of you. Use it well.”
The Lioness stepped up, gently nuzzled the ewe’s muzzle and bowed her head to the herd. Then she turned to the lion and they moved off toward the mountains sniffing the wind.
GCT shld realise that context of saying has changed for most of SE Asia.
