Singapore to give out free YOG scholarships to foreigners

Written by Our Correspondent

Singapore’s pro-foreigner government is again giving out free scholarships sponsored by Singapore taxpayers to foreigners.

The new scholarship, called the Singapore Youth Olympic Scholarship will be awarded to outstanding young athletes from around the world to study in Singapore.

According to a report in the Straits Times, the recipients will get a fully-subsidized academic and sports education at the Singapore Sports School for between four and six years.

The government-funded scholarships, which will be given out once every four years during the summer YOG, is open to all 205 National Olympic Committees (NOCs) worldwide.

One athlete will be selected from each of the five continents, and the last spot will be reserved for a Singaporean.

The scholarships for foreigners will cost about $25,000 a year which means that more than $100,000 will be allocated to attract five foreign athletes to Singapore instead of being invested in locals.

They will cover food, accommodation, education, sports training as well as return air tickets from the recipient’s home country.

It is not revealed if the foreign scholars will be bonded in Singapore for a period of time upon graduation from the Singapore Sports School.

While the Singapore government has offered a slew of scholarships for foreign students to study in Singapore’s varsities, this is believed to be the first such scholarship for sports.

The ruling party is especially generous to foreign students studying in Singapore on government-funded scholarships – many of them are given a free tertiary education here on top of being guaranteed a job upon graduation as some are bonded with the Singapore government for varying periods of between three to six years.

The scholarship was welcomed by Dr Southanom Inthavong, deputy secretary-general of Laos’ National Olympic Council.

“We have plans to send our sportsmen overseas, but we are short of funding. A scholarship like this will help, especially for the future,” he was quoted saying in the Straits Times.

Singapore is indeed a boon for developing countries in the region for which country in the world will spend more money on foreigners than its own citizens.

Why is our government doing such thing on us ?

They rather invest the people’s money on other countries children.

They are belittling and treating our children like dirt!

Anyway I had decided to Vote PAP OUT !

  • TrueBlueSG:

What good will such policy do? Bring good athletes here means they will continue to perform well in their respective sports? Types of training and training environment are very important to the development of sportsmen, what can Singapore give these top athletes? What’s the point??!! What’s the point??!! 100 K for foreigners to study??! Sigh……

  • poor foreign sportsman:

Remember S’pore is a “meritocracy” city or country, whatever you like to call it.

Whoever foreigner is good, be it brain or brawn, S’pore Govt will give you a free scholarship, no question asked!

S’pore children just not “hard driving” enough to earn these scholarships given freely to “foreign talents” and “that is their problem”!!

  • Tide:

It’s like your father rather pay for your neighbor’s kids education because your father thinks they are smarter than you…and therefore worth his time and investment…and then blame you for not working hard enough.
But the funny thing is your father still wants you to look after him in his old age and give him allowance…or else he will accuse you of being unfilial…

    go figure.

  • Incredulous:

    So, it’s Official.

Foreigners ARE MORE IMPORTANT THAN BORN & BRED SINGAPOREANS!!!!

Anyone, can help me migrate to another country so I can return to Singapore as a PR???

  • dunbeanidiot:

Aiya, you guys can never understand.

Bring in enough athletes from different countries so we can conduct our very own World Cup then no need to pay FIFA or EPL for rights anymore already.

More worthwhile economically in the long term.

Simple maths logic from our world class MIW :-

1 ) Our net-worth is highest in the world ( rich citizen ) , that is because our net-worth is tight to our HDB prices . In reality , 80% are living by the day .

2 ) The rating system for UNI is how many foreign students studying in it . The more foreign students , the higher it goes .

3 ) The economy is in shuch a deep shit because MIW are all sleeping . When they suddenly realised that SG is on the verge of collasping , the quickly use maths again by the influx of FTs .

Frankly , they don’t care about the citizens . see the point . Still vote for them and good luck to your kids .

  • PAPSHITS:

These pap jerks are the best in the world…..they not only “take care” of us….but the whole world!!!!!Salute u Bxxtxxd for your generosity!!!

  • Bengster:

We would have to see what is the take-up rate of the scholarships, and what are the criteria and measures in assessing potential recipients of this scholarship. I am not entirely sure of what is the government’s real motive in allowing YOG atheletes taking up such scholarships.
My personal guess is that it wants to bulk up the reputation of the Singapore Sports School as an international and globally-recognized sports school, which provides holistic academic and sporting education to its students. If it manages to attract young athletes who go on to succeed at the international arena (e.g. Olympic Games or World Championships), then it can lay claim that Singapore once trained and educated these athletes.
The allowing of a Singaporean out of the 5 successful scholarship applications could just be a token. But why not make the scholarship available for all Singaporeans? Won’t this help the lower income families whose child excels in sports, but might not have the financial ability to enrol in the Sports School?

  • IzaRR:

very likely they will be no bonds after study can go back to your contry our government won’t stop you, if there were bonds don’t think they will want that scholarship.

  • haha:

Can I change my pink IC to a blue IC, study pass or work permit?
I can run, swim and most of all “carry ball”

  • Dissapointed:

On a side-track, why cant our government allow us citizens to tap into our CPF savings to fund our kids for their education elsewhere, since its OUR money that we are asking for to ‘loan’ to us which us also benificial for them in a way whereby they can loan our money to us and then charge an interest upon.Isnt that a good idea…=)

  • Apocalypse 2012:

Well as old man said, what to do – Singaporeans are less hungrier and have less drive. So who to blame.
But of course, old man didnt blame himself for mistakes (he only admit mistakes after 30 years, but NO GRACE NOR COURTESY TO APOLOGIZE TO SINGAPOREANS), and silly Singaporeans still blindly thank him, sad sad sad.
Dont forget we are still waiting for the apology for the bullshit promise of participating in South Africa 2010

  • ahhui:

What the fish? We already have more than enough foreigners in our local university and they are pulling of such stunts again?

Why are foreigners being paid to study here while I go into the work force with a huge study loan on my back? What the fish is the government trying to prove?

If they have too much money, I would advise them to raise the amount of subsidies given out to LOCAL undergraduates.

Given the amount of study loan we have atm, fresh graduates need at least 2 years to clear their loans(1k per month).

  • wat?:

really.. the sports school running out of ppl to join? i really don’t see how this can “contribute” to singapore.

    FAIL.

  • propap:

Why spend singaporean taxpaeyers’ monies to give scholarships to foreigners?
There are so many deserving students from poor singaporean families who should be receiving scholarships!
Why do our elites keep showering foreigners with our hardearned money like noboby’s business?!!!!!!!!!!!!
And,when it comes to citizens’ welfare, they stinge?
Are they trying to ‘BUY’ more AWARDS from foreign countries with our reserves…the zoo may not be able to sustain any more monkeys…

  • man:

I am gonna receive the IRAS form soon and it makes me kinda pissed of that part of my contributions is being channelled to support this undertakings.

  • aaron:

Of course Singaporeans shuld come first, and I think it’s obvious SGers get a lot of scholarships too :P

But does that mean we don’t give money to others who may also need it? According to this argument, we shouldn’t be giving money to Haiti either.

Heading behind a nickname “admin” and writing things like this (see below) shows you are not a credible site to the mainstream media.

“Singapore is indeed a boon for developing countries in the region for which country in the world will spend more money on foreigners than its own citizens.”

    Try harder.

  • Anon:

    @ex nihilo

If he posts with his real name, it is guaranteed that you’ll soon see him on the Straits Times for multiple counts of defamation, slander, contempt of court, etc. All of which will be convinced as guilty with minimal days of hearing.

  • Singaporean?:

    WoW!!
how i love every moment of these…
    complain …..complain ….sour grapes

    We………..
being accuse as a racist country…. (compared to Singapore’s ‘Meritocracy’ ….come on, who are we kidding?)
being ridiculed for our political system….. (it called democracy)
being labeled poor…. (we own our land, our home and our life)

yet, we don’t complain and retaliate to criticism coz we are too big and happy to stoop that low!
