Electoral rolls updated again to include more new citizens in the register

Written by Our Correspondent

In a sign that elections may be called anytime soon, the ruling party has updated the registers of voters again for the second time within a year to include the new immigrants who took up Singapore citizenship last year.

The revision will enable the names of new voters to be entered in the appropriate registers.

There were 20,153 new citizens in 2008 and their names have already been included in an earlier update in February last year. The present revision will include new citizens in 2009, whose numbers is not known yet.

Faced with a potential voter backlash over some of its misguided policies, the ruling party has been desperately trying to shore up its support base by “persuading” PRs to take up Singapore citizenship.

According to unverified feedback from the ground, some PRs are not having their status renewed – they were told in no uncertain terms either to become Singaporeans or returned to where they came from.

As new citizens will most likely vote for the ruling party, the increase in the number of new citizens will dilute support for the opposition.

The ruling party has gone out of its way to woo the newcomers including PRs. A mega $10-million Community Integration Fund was unveiled last year to make the immigrants feel “welcomed” in Singapore.

New citizens and PRs are being roped into grassroots organizations which are described as “part of the PAP” by its strongman Lee Kuan Yew lately. No efforts were spared by the media to portray the measures taken by the ruling party to “integrate” the new citizens.

Due to the ruling party’s liberal immigration policies, foreigners now make up 36 per cent of Singapore’s population, up from 14 per cent in 1990. Of the remaining 64 per cent who are citizens, an increasing number are born overseas.

Assuming the average number of new citizens per year since 2006 is 20,000, they may contribute nearly 100,000 new voters in the next election, more than enough to sway votes in favor of the ruling party in closely fought contests.

With few credible leaders in the opposition camp, the ruling party is likely to romp home to another electoral victory with or without the help of the new citizens.

The new citzens, or fellow Singaporeans now, we welcome them. Some will still vote for opposition.

You can never say 100% will cast their vote for the PAP. But the result will still be the same, the ruiling party will still win.

These 100,000 new citizens will not affect the next election as long as we have oppositions to vote and no walk over . Remember , we ( 80% of local citizens )only need to have a chance to vote , thats all . Freak election is coming . Papaya panic button pressed already and their camp confused and no co-ordination at all .

no doubt majority of new citizens will vote for PAP, but don’t forget that many old voters has been switching grounds too.

with each passing year, a batch of old pap voters dies and a new batch of young voters gets to vote. if more young votes swing to opposition, that will be enough to counter the rising new citizen vote

We have to pressure the STUPID gahmen to hold the election sooner before they nationalized more FTrash & PRubbish to gain more voters.
From internal leak, the PM have intention to push it to next year, to give as much citizenship to FTrash & PRubbish.

Election will most likely be this year and not next year.

Having election election next year is too risky for the PAP. It is widely believe that economy in latter part of this year may not be too rosy. In fact election even in the end of this year is also not very positive for the incumbent.

Election during weak economy period is dangerous because everybody is already angry hence cannot think properly.

Should election be held next year and if the PAP lose, with less than a year could they hand over to the next government neatly since they are not even able to account for the reserve monies accurately?

The likelihood is that election will be held in this year after the world cup same as previous election too. If there is no world cup live telecast this time round, maybe it will be held in the June holiday.

New Citizens would surely vote for PAP as it would be foolish on their part to upset the regime that gave them that privilege.

Come next election I bet at least 70% of these ex-new-citizens would hunger for an opposition instead. Why?Because five years is more than enough for them to realize their folly for keeping PAP in power which simply means an unbearable increase in their cost of living..

Once the PAP’s love affair with FT’s & new citizens is over I bet PAP would once again resort to another sort of management by crisis to capture power for the next election.

This is how PAP had ruled us for the past 50 years or so.

PAP takes elections as a necessary evil to overcome every 5 years and not as a measure of people’s will…..just go through some of MM’s past speeches and one would be shocked at it’s revelations…PAP in the past had toyed with more than 1 vote for certain groups because it had identified them to be their staunch supporters….Now,new citizens are merely another pawn in PAP’s power game so as to speak.

I know of new citizens who do not like PAP. New citizens voting for PAP may not be 100% accurate. As a matter of fact, they see clearer than many Singaporeans and they will never hesitate to vote out PAP unlike kiasi Singaporeans. If we look around us, these PRCs and Ah Nehs were quite daring to break laws, something that Singaporeans have not tried. Let’s keep our chin high and trust that PAP will be voted out to save not just Singapore, but every comrades living and building this nation.

It is also NOT in the interest of new citizens to support the current FT policy.

Don’t forget that by definition they are no longer FTs and will suffer along with all other citizens if FTs and FWs continue to stream in endlessly.

Perhaps TR can write, in both English and Chinese, about how new citizens will ALSO suffer if the PAP government is not given a wake up call.

Still forecasting for GE in 2011. Still too early as global economy is still rather choppy with China curbing credit with an overheated economy, USA still tottering with patchy economic growth & chronic unemployment and European Union in crisis with huge budget deficits in several EU countries. More like a W recovery as some economists have predicted last year.

Of course, your wonderful PAP gahment would want you to think otherwise, knowing how DAFT Sporeans are, that is the way PAP sees us.

Most likely scenario for updating electoral register is to re-draw GRC boundaries to best harness socio & racial profiles to up PAP percentage winnings in the next GE.

PAP knows it will still win big in the next GE with or without new citizens as the majority of native Sporeans will still vote for them no matter what. That is something that we the netizens who are disgruntled with PAP cannot figure out.

    How would new citizens vote?

Than we must look at their demographic of their docile ; especially in HDB estates.

Surely, even if 100% of new citizens vote only for PAP that effect would be very diluted if they are evenly spread….This is where the HDB high resale prices and new citizens pattern of voting comes handy. Why?

Because ask any marketing strategist how he/she would destroy a competitor through price mechanism..Most probably by setting a very competitive price SELECTIVELY & STRATEGICALLY.

That’s how the HDB high resale prices works for PAP.Ever noticed that the highest HDB resale prices are only in Tanjong Pagar constituency?..MM’s constituency !

Now,why is that problem you would ask.Because take away MM and that constituency would fall since no credible PAP MP is there to replace MM….which simply means only PAP as brand has to be sold in Tanjong Pagar constituency..

Just keep a watch at the price mechanism of the resale HDB flats whether high or low.It would gives us a clue as to where these 100,000 or so new citizens would vote.

Actually many of the new citizen PRC friends I know do not necessary vote for PAP. They will question and judge objectively. My own experiences, usually those from India and Southeast Asia countries such as Malaysians, Philippines, Vietnamese etc that are more supportive of the regime. Their home country is nearer and they are here just to make money, going home very frequently, they are not interested in politics.

It is good to protect citizen rights but do it more rationally, that’s the way to go.

More citizen rights and more equal distribution of wealth to all Singapore citizens who are citizens for more than 5 years.

    Rights
    1. The right for all Singaporeans to vote.
    2. The right of freedom of speech.
    3. etc

    Equal distribution of wealth by
    1. Disseminating 20% of the profit from investment by TH and GIC every 5 years to all citizens who has been Singapore citizens for at least the last 8 years.

Specifically, distribute evenly to all working adults (more to those with NS and who are above 62 years old).
