A young Singaporean expressed her worries at a gloomy and uncertain future

Hi TR, wonderful weekend for me, and perhaps for you guys as well. Not out for an evening walk? Sorry, my estate is filled with FTs that there is no way for me to enjoy my walks like how I used to (think crowded footpaths filled with bicycles, drunkards on grass patches, etc).

Pardon my harsh tone – I have been increasingly put off by recent happenings, and TR is just the place for like-minded rantings.

The Unsuspecting Cyclists

I came upon an article on TNP recently, lamenting a father and son for cycling on pedestrian foot paths in Jurong West. While cycling on such walkways are against the law, no warning was issued to these two first-time offenders.

My first impression when reading the article was that these two are true-blue, local citizens of Singapore. I did my research and managed to find myself in a forum(http://forums.hardwarezone.com.sg/showthread.php?p=44431206) where one of the said cyclists posted his grouses. Judging from his language, and his reference to “foreign workers”, I think we can safely assume that he is ‘one of our kind’. In his post, he also mentioned that ‘three foreign workers’ were fined as well.

Three foreign workers versus a father and son. Three against two. Why then did our mainstream papers write a report only on these two and leave out the mention of the foreign workers? Mind you, I live in Jurong West Street 81, just one street away from Street 93 where the fined took place, and every day, throngs of Bangladeshi and PRC workers cycle on these pathways without a care. I have many near-collisions with these people. TNP reported this piece of menial news and made the local father and son looked so bad. Just drop by Jurong West (the land famous for factories and foreign workers) and you will understand my unhappiness.

Not On The Same Ground

I have another issue to bring up – unfairness at the workplace.

I started working two years ago, and my last drawn salary was $2,200, not bad for my qualifications and working experience. However, due to the competitiveness of my industry, I was working under a contract. In Jan 2010, my contract ended, thus leaving me without a job.

This spurred forth my 2 months of job search. I started off asking for a salary of $2,500. As time goes by, I brought down my expected salary to $2,200, $2,000, $1,800 and finally, $1,600.

Last week, I managed to clinch an interview, and was offered a job which would usually pay $2,500 (based on JobsCentral Salary Calculator). My given salary was $1,600. After deduction of CPF, my take home pay is really miserable.

Working location is located in the East side whereas I stay in the West. Working hours are long, and the job scope is tiring. But I put up with it. I need to have a job because my wedding is next month, and I have a housing loan and study loan to service, on top of monthly utility bills.

I do feel a little humiliated with the humongous decrease in my salary, but I have no choice.

Yesterday, I found out that we will be having a new staff on Monday. She is from Myanmar. I am not sure of her salary but I know that lodging and air tickets will be provided by my company. We will also be applying/have applied a permit for her to work in Singapore. Initially, I thought that she will be taking on some major role in the company. Later, my boss announced that she will be working as a Corporate Accounts Executive, to be in charge of business development with our corporate clients. In fact, I have applied for this position, only to be turned down, even after meeting all the requirements.

There are no lack of local Singaporeans looking for such jobs, and yet these jobs are taken over by (obviously) cheap foreigners. I am so furious that I can hardly type properly.

I can’t leave my job as I need to have a stable income. The Government may say that $1,200 is enough for an average local to survive. No! Repayment of loans will already drain all my take home pay, leaving my husband-to-be to pay for other things. I foresee my life to be an uphill challenge from now onwards. I really hope to survive this nonsense.

I also really feel extremely humiliated with my pay. Sorry for the repeated emphasis on this.

Thanks for outlet for me to rant. You may use my information as case study or whatever you want with it.

Have a nice day.

Judy Eng

    Hi Judy,
This thing happens everyday here in Singapore. As long as the floodgate is still open to those FT/FW mainly from third world country, this will not stop. You can consider yourself still lucky enough to have a job. There are many, yes and the nos still increasing for many people who are left jobless, people who already have childrens to feed, folks to take, utilities bills to pay, these are the worst affected lot where their lives are just like a death penalty when they are suddenly told to pack and leave. Just imagine how the feeling’s like when your income turns ZERO the following day. One starts to think are we still the singaporeans we used to be proud of when our very own citizens are being slammed by its own govt.

    Dear Judy,
you are not alone. many of us are also facing the same crap! I really hope the situation improves for you and the rest of us too. But at this point in time I feel like our government has really decided to forsake native Singaporeans and focus their efforts on taking care of the foreigners as they will be the real future of Singapore.

I think the best thing for us to do at this point in time is to not show too much hospitality to these foreigners. Any chance you get, call the police and report them. Take pictures of them when they cycle along the walkways or are drunk on the grass patches and start posting them online and mention that the police are not doing anything about it!! Since the police won’t do any thing about it, then it is time we citizens start doing our part by creating more awareness about such unwanted behaviour that those foreign dogs bring with them. Keep doing it until the police have no choice but to do their work to save face!

If talking nicely doesnt work, then perhaps shouting will get their attention!!

    Majulah Singapura!!!

One or two years ago, the government started to allow cycling on walkways. Why did they fine the locals on cycling on walkways?

Frankly, from what I see LKY and his people have disdain for locals and are doing all they can to attempt to drive us all away and replace us with foreigners. To LKY, locals are champions grumblers, we cannot be compared with foreigners where working is concerned, such sentiments are detrimental to the morale of the locals. He has been complaining so much about us to other countries. I have never see any leaders of any countries complain so much about the people who feed them.

I hope LKY dies soon. LKY is ungrateful. He bites the hands that feed him. He shall pay for the ways he treats us upon he passes on. Go to hell, LKY, we don’t need you.

Dear Judy, if you a young Singaporean feel like this, how about us older workers, 50 yrs in June. The last few years has been bad, salary like your going down, luckily my wife is working but if one of us is out of work, it will be very tight with two teenage girls. The problem, yes is because of the foreign workers. In my last company, no problem if a Singaporean resigns, they get a foreigner, from China, India, Indon, Burma, Filipino you name it man! My heart goes out to you young people starting to work.It is not that there is no future for you, but the cards have been turned against us with the influx of the foreigners, which the government did not anticipate such a problem. And you know why they did not anticipate it because they are always focusing on the economics hardware and don’t really give two hoots about how locals will be affected. My youngest brother was retrenched twice in the last three years, mind you he has a finance degree. He’s so pissed, he decided to leave Singapore for good. There is still hope for you young people, if you want change and have the courage, vote the PAP out if you and your friends can vote. There is nothing much to say to them, because they have not been listening to our greviences. All their recent talk is just trying to placate the people but they know that people are very unhappy and many are struggling to survive, even if they have a job. Don’t talk the government/ civil service, they have a good life. It is we the common folks, trying to provide a future for our children and grandchildren. So don’t give up yet, carry on and do the right thing when voting comes.

  • Sigh:

…… sigh. And the people who can make a difference do not see it as something they want to change.
    Foreigners are preferred to locals.
They are only interested in easy management – have workers who are willing to work more for less pay and don’t complain about them.
How about getting a Malaysian to be our next President? He/She will cost less than 3 million.
A Bangladeshi to be our Minister? Cost less too. Probably works harder.
It is easy to demand for productivity over speeches and betray the very people who vote you in by turning a deaf ear and recruiting foreigners.
Maybe the policy makers are not feeling the ground because it is not the people who vote them in; its the GRC system who allow so many of them walk over and enter politics without even knowing the issues on the ground.
They owe their MP position to the party. not the people.
Its the party that pays them millions not the taxpayers.
They are working for the good of the party, not the people.
The people are to be managed and kept under control, not to listen to.
    How sad is this?

    Hi Judy,

I share your plight except that I am a PMET in late forties with three young children. I was made redundant in 2008 and have yet to be gainfully employed ! I tried over 12 months sending applications and seeing headhunters and even got myself listed with the CDC job search. It is all to no avail as the reasons given by companies…”you are over qualified”…; “you are too expensive”…; “you are nearing retirement” …”foreigners are cheaper” etc. There was one company which even told me that i need to have knowledge of Tagalog and good mandarin…!!

Well there you go now we are living hand to mouth with help of relatives as even the request for financial help from the government did not come through.

Your case has confirmed my worries for my young children. I only wish I can find a way to take them overseas. Furthermore they are boys and they have to serve the army soon…!!

I totally emphatise with you and pray and hope you find a better life elsewhere. I guess its better to be a second class citizen in another country then in our own. On the otherhand if you have the resolve please stay and “fight” for our rights here. This is another option i have told my boys as it is our right as citizens..! I sincerely hope the next generation will break the hegemony of the current government.

The manager hirer a FT politely told her he is looking for someone back home from his native country and not considering any Singaporean ! Someone who don’t understand singapore, no local knowledge on how things work, the local rule and regulations is preferred over a local that has all the knowledge and most likely can do a better equal or better job ! The local is passed over because the manager hirer knows our govt is not interested in protecting jobs for singaporean. He can thus bring in as many of his kind as possible and leave singaporean to die if they cannot find a job to feed their family. You know what you need to do in the next election to change this !!!

For a fact, the basic salary for a local undergrad suck because employers never ever needed to consider the possiblity that we young people would like to have our OWN roof over our heads, a marriage and maybe a family in the near future.

Employers take it for granted that our parents will definitely provide a place for us to live. Even out of sympathy, some parents in the future may continue to give us pocket money till we are 30 years old or more.

Seriously, the situation is horrible and scary and even sick. We will become so handicap to our parents, it is pretty degrading really considering, most of us have got University degrees and our parents only.. an O’levels? but what difference does it make when at the end, only money talks in Singapore.

Ranked 148th lah, what you expect, responsible, impartiality, sense of justice. Fat hopes lah!
To cut to the chase, all these expressions of despair, attempts to be heard – frankly, it is not working and it wont work.
This crap about Singaporean coming first was never true and it is not true. today PAP needs the foreingers to shore up the eroding support and that is what matters. Hence this FT policy lah.
Has anyone heard of any country in the world going out of its way to get foreigners in quickly and give them PR status and citizenship so easily. Why? I daresay it is only this reason lar – to have them beholden and subtly try and translaTE them into votes during elections. These are the type of politicians we have and if it were to happen in any country, excepting dictatorships and autocracies, they would have been booted out long long long time ago lor. So much for nation-building, so much for one-people – aiyoh, it beggars belief lah. All hogwash!
We were all pawns in the game of power politics and $$$. My guess, is it is cos of the one-party system with is fraught with loopholes. Need i elaborate?

  • Dear Judy:

I totally agree with your article. Singaporeans have to be partially responsible for the influx of foreign trashes today. Why do I say so? It is not because we Singaporeans are lazy, stupid and less hard driven but because we have given too much power to a party full of wolves in sheep furs for too long.

As a result, the PAP can do whatever they wish without sparing some thoughts to how we the native people feel or think. Singapore becomes a PAP Corp. and some may call, Leeland.

Singaporeans are patient and most tolerant group of people in the world. We welcome foreigners.

    BUT

what PAP did was wrong. The PAP recklessly let in millions of foreigners… with total no disregards for the livelihoods of native Singaporeans who supported them. Many companies drool over the huge pool of cheap labors( many of these are PAP linked companies) and began to retrench the locals in the name of restructuring, even though they are doing well. The real reason these companies retrenched Singaporeans is to free up jobs to hire cheaper foreigners.

Singaporeans lose their jobs. In addition to having the disadvantage of National Service liabilities which make the male citizens less favorable by employers, we now have to face downpours of foreigners that make it even impossible to find a stable job.

Male and Female Singaporeans alike suffer as they need higher salary to support their parents and families in this place we call our homeland but the PAP expect them to lower their salary to those of foreigners which totally makes no sense.

Don’t make the same mistake. Don’t vote PAP. Tell your family, friends and whoever you can to stop the heartless government from ripping our families further apart.

    Dear Singaporeans,

Vote the PAP out. The PAP has betrayed the very own people who voted them in. No matter how good they claim themselves to be, it would be useless if they are not serving your interests.

The oppositions would be much better. At least, they are new to the governance if they are voted in the majority. They have to try hard to please us, the citizen.

PAP has taken all of us for granted.

Singaporeans have been forgotten the day PAP and the incumbent gvot decided to continue their stay and hold on to the levers of power (money included lah). It is no longer true that the citizens and the nation come first. Votes come first lah. Hence the so-called FT policy was implemented cos they are fully aware and know that the likelihood of they losing support amonsgt locals is very high and growing. By and large
Singaporeans are being sacrificed for short term POLITICAL GAINS lah.
This is the naked truth and one can delude oneself and talk about … all day long and extrapolate, complain, whine, request , … nothing doing.
Change has to come from the masses and translate into votes.
One-party rule is inherently flawed and a simple deduction could be made about transparency, accountability, responsiblity and so on so forth but it is simply being naive and utterly stupid to assume that these so-called self-checking mechanisms work. Utter rubbish. Who is checking whom? Who is being made to account for indiscretions? One can go on lah but all is mere wishful thinking. If possible,
Vote them ALL out and opt for two-,or multi-party system and there may be a chance to end this charade once and for all.

I’m a fresh graduate and I can totally understand the situation, because I see a job STOLEN right in front of my eyes by a VIETNAMESE who is not even PR. And that job is definitely not one that is shunned by Singaporeans. It’s PMET job.

The PAP doesn’t give a rat’s arse about Singaporeans. You die, it is your problem. Actually, they have never admitted that the wholesale influx of foreigners is a problem. To them, it is just a figment of the local Singaporean’s imagination. Soon we will reach a stage where nobody gives a shit about whoever they vote into power. Anybody except the PAP. This plays into the PAP’s hands. Don’t for a moment think that the PAP doesn’t know this. This is the ultimate con by a ruling government- make the citizens so mad that they will vote for anyone. The citizenry realizes that this is not so good after all and eventually votes for the PAP because the alternative to them is even worse. One important election platform of the PAP in the past has always been that the opposition cannot form a credible government. I say, the hell with that notion. Let’s get rid of this bunch of greedy, hypocritical, ungrateful, scheming dogs. I don’t care anymore.

Kudos to you for having written an honest, simple yet straight to the point article. I am in the IT line and was in the same situation as you 7 years ago. My frens and peers were only able to get $1.7k – $1.8K and i was faced with a $17K++ school loan to pay off.

In my 1st IT project, i was one of the 2 singaporean programmers (excluding my singaporean PM)

Excluding my Singaporean PM, i was surrounded by 10++ indian programmers who had the programming standards of a high school student, let alone adhere to the basic SOP needed in a IT project. Is it any surprise that the the high number of indian programmers coincided with the fact that 2 of my team leads were indian?

It was no surprise that the project floundered and in the end, it was up to a SINGAPOREAN programming wiz to save the project. Later in other jobs, i have friends who needed to kio sai (clean up shit) of IT projects that were outsourced 100% to china and the programmers were soooo cheap that the company had no qualms footing their airline ticket and accommodation for them to finish up their project in singapore.

With the way things are going now, i fear for the future generation and the plight of my own kids (if i were to have any).

Foreigners are given preference over locals. I do not know of any country that practises this. To compound to this, when the foreigners are in, they bring in more foreigners at the expense of the locals. Don’t believe me? Go to the Dept of Statistic website now to check:

Singapore total employment : 2.99 million
Foreigners and PRs employed : 1.78 million
Singapore citizens employed : 1.21 million.

If you minus Singaporeans employed by the govt i.e. all the ministries, armed forces, NS men, police, statutory boards like HDB etc I guess in the private sector Singaporeans comprised only 30% of the work force. Which country has such statistics? We are totally overwhelmed!

I urge Singaporeans to go to Raffles Place MRT to see the pathetic ads placed to plead to employers to hire on merit and be fair (to locals). Again another UNIQUELY SINGAPORE campaign.

    36% of 5 million = 1.8 million

1.8 million foreigners on 700 sq km of land.

BTW, the FTs are also crowding out the ‘higher class’ jobs of managers, doctors, lawyers, engineers, accountants etc. So it’s not just the low wage, blue collared folks who feel marginalised.

A reality of globalisation? No, it’s an overly liberal immigration policy gone awry. The PAP screwed up big time, little wonder the ‘let’s make our new citizens feel welcome’ theme keeps playing on like a broken record in the mainstream media. The PAP knows it must do damage control, and fast.

One conclusion. You are far too expensive to be employed. Why did I say that? I am no better that you. I am also a contract worker and cannot find a full time job (and hence I too have to postpone my marriage). A potential employer once during an interview admits that this is an ongoing trend. (i.e cheaper, better if not equal, faster foreign “talent”)
I think the govt gives too much power to the companies. Locals are miserably being protected. Companies can employ any person that is foreign that they think it is far far better or equally qualified and the cost is definitely far far lower as compared to employing a local. I believe the term foreign talent is badly being abused.
Think about it, Singapore is a company. The only different comparing guy to girl is the need to serve NS. Guys need to give something to the country but the country owes you nothing. What about foreigners?
It is definitely a wise choice to look for a greener pasture where the government takes care of its true blue citizen, if you have the chance. Only country that makes their citizen (exclude PR) that feels the importance of their presence will be able to win the hearts and the minds of their people.
Well, I am afraid; effect of all these policies are…. Immigration is already one big thing to talk about (or should I say I am being chased away?). Just remember. You got to help yourself as Singapore owes you nothing. Being educated by the environment, selfish is nothing wrong. Being good to someone is definitely being cruel to oneself. If you are a Singaporean, you will understand what I mean.
Singapore is definitely a cruel society… I will rest my case here….

Protect our citizens’ jobs. PAP has used fear by saying that if opposition in power, sell your properties and move on as Singapore wouldn’t be good hence on.

Opposition should copy their tactics and spread the word –

A vote for PAP is a vote for their foreign talent policy such that one day you can lose your job to a foreigner. Save guard your job, your friends’jobs, your relatives’jobs, vote opposition for your children sake.

This stupid foreign talent policy has caused many Singaporeans to lose their jobs and at night cannot sleep because they may lose their jobs next day. Our friends, our relatives, our fellow Singaporeans have lost jobs and forced to take lower pay all due to PAP. And now they are flooding Singapore with many new citizens so that they can get more votes.

If we don’t take actions now, it will be too late. Spread the vote against PAP cos their foreign trash policy is against Singapore.

  • A resentful citizenry

    http://www.littlespeck.com/content/people/CTrendsPeople-090926.htm

Singaporeans are not annoyed by their arrival, but the overwhelming numbers and sometimes having to play second fiddle to them.

    By Seah Chiang Nee.
    Sept 26, 2009

AN ELECTRONICS firm that advertised last week for a “preferably non-Singaporean” engineer has added fuel to a worsening controversy in this migrant city. It particularly stipulated that “permanent residents are welcome” to apply for this “mid-career job (salary negotiable)”. A copy of the advertisement found its way onto the web.

Applicants should have a diploma or a relevant trade certificate, with 3-5 years’ work experience, and “preferably non-Singaporean (PR welcome),” it added.

This provoked strong reactions from Singaporeans who are already upset at the large number of foreigners allowed to work here. One asked if such discrimination is legal. “This sort of ad would have landed this company in heavy trouble in most developed states,” he added. Another writer said: “Now we know where we stand. The policy has downgraded Singaporeans to below foreigners.”

Archilles said: “I feel left out by my own government, which is desperately trying to attract foreign talent (and) overlooking our own ‘local talent’. It’s sad, very sad!”

A similar storm broke some years ago when another company told a fresh Singaporean graduate during a job interview that his chances were slim if he had to report for annual reservist duty. “We prefer a foreigner who has no such obligations,” the executive had added. Besides, they are much less costly to hire. The reservist withdrew his application in disgust.

This is not just another act of public whining. The fact is many Singaporeans are no longer sure about their own role or entitlement in society. In recent years, the rate of entry has increased sharply as the economy flourished. Every year some 100,000 foreigners have been arriving, putting pressure on what was already one of the most competitive and over-crowded cities in Asia.

The controversy couldn’t have come at a worse time when the country is emerging from a severe downturn and the people’s uppermost concern is getting – or retaining – their jobs. Last month Seagate (worldwide: 10,000 workers) moved out its manufacturing capacity, retrenching some 2,000 workers. “It is difficult to imagine the impact of Seagate’s loss on our economy,” said commentator Harrison Goh. Its departure, he added, may have marked the end point of Singapore’s involvement in the global manufacturing market. “It spells a deepening crisis that most Singaporeans may not yet fathom, thinking that the PAP government has a ready solution.”

It is within this context that the unpopularity of the open door policy becomes apparent. Political leaders are now working hard to reassure embittered Singaporeans that their interests would always come first. Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong announced last week that his government would reduce the inflow of foreign workers to maintain the “tone” of society. He gave no numbers. At the same time, his Community, Youth and Sports Minister assured polytechnic students: “You have a birthright. Everything we do is for your long-term benefit. Foreigners are here to help make Singapore more viable and competitive.”

The other side of the coin is equally stark. With 1.28 babies per couple, Singapore’s birth-rate is one of the lowest in the world and threatens its long-term survival. Singaporeans are also ageing rapidly, which may require young people to pay higher taxes to look after them. Both defects are already being felt in a manpower-short economy, which requires immigrants to correct, according to officials.

“Companies have been coming to us to ask ‘where are the workers, we can’t get them’,” a government official said. Singaporeans, being descendants of immigrants themselves, have never been antagonistic to the presence of foreigners here – until now. What they resent is not their coming, but the overwhelming numbers, which they feel are threatening their jobs and education opportunities.

They are also angry with uneven policies that benefit foreigners more than locals, especially national service (compulsory two years) and the subsequent annual reservist call-ups, a burden not borne by foreigners. Permanent residents are exempted, but their children are not. Not having to meet reservist call-ups and cheaper wages are powerful attractions for employers to hire foreigners, particularly in a weak economy.

Complaints have increasingly come from older or mid-career Singaporeans who have been replaced by lower-cost younger workers from China or India. The foreigners, hungrier and without family responsibility here, generally work longer hours for less pay – something that married Singaporeans with a home mortgage to pay cannot possibly match. A small industry has risen to recruit them in large numbers – as indicated by a recruitment agency, with this advertisement: “Do you find it difficult and expensive to hire local staff? Why not consider hiring foreign talents?” Claiming it was licensed by the Manpower Ministry, the agency said that it had recruited thousands of workers from China, India, Vietnam and Malaysia for Singapore firms in the past five years.

Every time such an ad appears, it cuts into the popularity of the government, which won 66.6% of the popular votes in the 2006 election. Several months ago, the government ordered its election machinery to prepare for a snap election in case one is called. With the improvement of the economy, it is widely expected that it will take place next year, instead of 2011 as scheduled. The public discontent against massive immigration promises to be one of the hottest campaign issues if it happens.

This intensity of public feeling has been too sensitive to be reflected in the traditional media, which has toned down the coverage. On the Internet, however, where Singaporeans can air their grievances, the mood is more sombre. It probably requires more than mere government assurances to placate.

Look at China, the CCCP Govt. they could think of using cheap labor, re-value their yuan, improve their machineries to cut down cost, they when all they way to Austriala to purchase cheaper raw materials, Africa, Russia and Brazil for tins, silver, brass, alumimum. That is what I called SMART GOVT.

Then slowly we can force the PAP to loose 1/3 or more parliamentary seatings.

Control inflation which inturn controlling cost of living which inturn make operating cost for business in China kept low. Subsidy for fresh graduates for 2 years free rental. Import extra cheap raw material from Africa by help them to build infarstructure. Making business partner with Russia and Austriala and Brazil…etc I rather be a China Citizen in another few years, I can’t stand stupid Govt. with zero ideas

So sorry to read abt your plight, Judy. I do believe many of us face the same kind of financial pressure, and to worsen things, Singapore is getting more and more unlivable with the presence of so many foreign workers. This government is stupid beyond words for allowing so many of them to come in without really having a long term vision – the only challenge for them is to cut the bottom line. Such short-termism is what will cause more people like you (and possibly me, soon) to feel stifled, unhappy and very disgruntled. I do not think we are a xenophobic bunch, but where opportunities are limited, I think the govt should focus on citizens. Since they’re not, let’s SACK them with our votes!

    {Foreign Competition}

we must not be afraid of these FTs. we singaporeans tend to feel inferior, especially in front of ang moh FTs. but seriously, those who come here are not the best in the world, and we, as singapore’s products, are really worth our salt. we must be more confident and fight for what we want, regardless whether it’s that transfer, promotion, job, or political direction.

i dunno what took us so long to realise that we true-blue singaporeans are a really well-educated and good work force. i think we’ve been told otherwise by our leaders to keep us docile. fed poison to keep us obedient.

    {The Rich Singaporeans Welcome Foreigners}

those singaporeans who are rich and at the top of the social hierachy now have vested interest to allow MORE foreigners to come in. for example, many of them buy multiple properties. and the price increase of their properties depends on more and more arrival of foreigners. AND even if some of these people get voted out and are no longer are ministers or politicians, it does not matter to them, because they have already made their pot of gold. they can just take their money and resettle in any country in the world. it’s people like us who cannot leave that are stuck with cleaning up the aftermath of the wild and crazy party.

    {Vote for HEART, not Certificates and CVs}

hence, before the situation gets too bad, it is the time to stick together and made a difference for ourselves. vote with your eyes open. not just anti-PAP. not just pro-any opposition.

whoever you vote in must have HEART, and not just credentials. those who just joined politics last minute, regardless PAP or not, are usually dodgy. vote for people who have been around for long. people who are open about themselves, their lives, their views, their families, their pets etc. people who do not act blur when they make mistakes. these are real people with HEART.

It is also because it is cheaper to companies to employ FTs/FWs. Blame the current sad state of affairs to the liberal open floodgates immigration policy. Anyone Tom, Dick and Harry can come to our country and get employed. Jobs where many qualified Sporeans are hoping for,are given to FTs/FWs. Judging from what you said that your company will be applying for work permit to enable her to take up the appointment indicates that the floodgates for FTs/FWs are still wide open. This is indeed a very sad day for we Sporeans. This country seems to value FTs/FWs more than its own citizens.

The thought of immigrating is becoming stronger as time goes by, but unlike the foreigners who are lured to Singapore by our government’s policy, equally heavy is my desire to stay with family and friends, and to be a responsible child to take care of my parents.

How tragic is it, when even my mother can come to me one day say:

“Son, don’t worry about me, don’t worry about us, you can go if there are better opportunities out there, just go.”

And she swallows to hide her feelings. It’s heartbreaking to see families torn apart because we don’t have better prospects in our own country.

I feel sorry for Judy and those struggling desperate Singaporeans. Privately, I am worried about the economy. The vibes I see are negative forward, at least over the next 12 months.

India, relatively unscathed by teh global economic downturn in 2009 and NOT needing massive stimulus spending, last week stunned financial market raising interest rate. That sent small shivers through financial market as stock market re-evaluate its implication. Greece is still wobbling and even if supported by EU, can it remain stable? Spain and Portugal is having it tough.

Britain expected to reduce its budget deficit by 1/2 within 4 years, NOT NOW and not eliminating it. London 2012 Olympics is desperately selling more tickets. In one word, Britain is GLOOMY.

China CANNOT POSSIBLY CONTINUE its massive stimulus spending like last year and unable to find a way of lifting its foot of the accelerator pedal. Inside China and outside the inflationary property bubble airbag economies in big cities, poverty grind is hardening. IT IS MEDIA BLANKED OUT. There is a big ghost town built in “Kang Ba Shi” in Inner Mongolia – NOT ONE OFFICIAL WORD ON THIS SCANDALOUS WASTEFUL SPENDING IN FUTILITY AND FAILURE. Very little of this dirty secret is in the media outside China as well. All quiet, quite, quiet like a pin drop.

    http://www.newstylerolex.com/rolexblogs/post/1430.html

    It is scary.

Analysts talks bullishly of recovery BUT THE SIGNS IS CONTRADICTORY IN THE ENERGY MARKET. ENERGY CONSUMPTION IS NEEDED TO DRIVE THE ECONOMY. How come the oil (energy) market is so soft??? Technical chartists are talking of shorting the oil future. The candlestick chart looks so bearish.

    http://www.clivemaund.com/article.php?art_id=69

I fear that really underscore an airbag economy – globally around the world about to burst again. Gold is raging hot while economy is also hot – another contradiction sign on the wall. Ask yourself, who buy gold that does not give you ANY RETURN in interest UNLESS YOU EXPECT INFLATION TO DRIVE UP GOLD PRICE, all speculative motive. Why would there be inflation when economy is booming and money to make in business and investment in stocks and shares in the line of recovery in global business? IT IS ILLOGICAL.

I fear deflation forward, but rising inflation because projects like Kang Ba Shi is going to collapse, leaving the banks vulnerable and Government forced to spend by more deficit to keep bank afloats. Print money to spend means more inflation to come – all gambling.

It is going to be tough times ahead. We are also having our “airbag” economy, bloated by rising property prices even as world economies is so bad. When the next burst come, even the rich who went on borowings to get richer will get hanged.

But our Singapore situation is worse because of 45 years of economic mismanagement. The cancer cells are only seen now in the poverty pockets in this first world class business centre. Outside look good, inside rotten to the core BUT OUR LEADERS IN DENIAL.

I am praying that the world economy do NOT have another turmoil in the next 5 years. That will give us a breathing space to restructure our political institution and revamp our economy.

THE PRESENT ROUTE OF POLITICS DRIVE ECONOMIC HERE BY PUBLIC DECEPTION OF THE TRUTH THROUGH MEDIA WILL DESTROY ALL HOPES FOR THE ENTIRE GENERATION WHICH JUDY IS ONE EXAMPLE OF THOSE TRAPPED IN NOW.

SO SAD, SO FRIGHTENING AND SOMETIMES SO ANGRY WHY ARE WE IN THIS FARKING MESS.

OUR CHILDREN HAVE VERY LITTLE HOPE BECAUSE OF STINKING POLITICS OF NO CHECKS AND BALANCES AND ECONOMIC MISMANAGEMENT AS A DIRECT RESULT.

I could understand your ambivalence about seeking your fortunes overseas while leaving your family and friends behind. My suggestion is that go ahead and explore opportunities elsewhere. Your parents, family members will understand. I have friends who had been working overseas while their families are in Singapore. And I am one of those. I took the plunge and had never looked back since. There’s no point whinging; the damage had been done. Time to move on. Singapore is like a rudderless ship under the PAP, with the ministers raking millions legally. The PAP has lost its moral authority to govern. To whip the citizenry into line, the PAP approach is to rule by the law (that is no rule of law in SGP). The PAP is bankrupt of ideas (other than meting out more hardships on the populace), relying on a compliant media to brainwash the citizenry.

Hi Judy, I feel so sorry for you & also, a large number of my fellow Singaporeans that are going through this unpleasant experience. I think the PAP’s top priority is to take care of the citizens & make sure nobody is left behind. Well, having said that & amplified by The Straits Times over & over again, in the end, it’s just boils down to GDP growth & more salary increment for themselve! It’s no more taking care of the sick but rather how much a PAP member could contribute to the GDP growth. Just listen to Old Man LKY, everytime he would talk about GDP rather than how the PAP could help the poor or the sick. Of course, when his son increased the GST to 7%, the excuse was to help the poor & till now, I am still wondering how much of the money has gone to help my fellow Singaporeans.

I know it’s important for Singapore to have a healthy growth every year, but I really doubt that any of this sweetness is passed on to the Average Joe. Just ask your taxi Uncle & he will tell you that he’s working till his kidneys burst everyday just to make ends meet! Therefore, I hope I could see a change before I die & I hope more locals want that bad enough to Vote For A Change!

This government has been way too lenient in issuing out work permits, employment passes and PRs to low quality foreigners.

Its difficult to understand why they are in such a hurry to stock up foreigners to the community and leave our own people high and dry.

Also, the agenda of skills upgrading whilst the salaries sliding is one unique situation which should not have existed. Its also amazing how foreigners can come to Singapore and ask for ridiculously low salaries whilst pushing up the cost of living via high rentals (leading to higher transaction prices of properties).

HDB has failed in asserting its authority that public housing is meant for citizens only and rental should only be permissible for PRs and Citizens. Employment and Work Permit holders should either stay in hostels or private apartments. This would ensure that their cost of living is no where more favorable than locals.

    Dear Judy,

I know how you feel…..because i have been in this situation TWICE….
In 1999, my first company where i’ve worked for 8 years suddenly wants to invest in China and moved most of their production to Shanghai and this includes their $$$. So, taking advantage of the Singapore labour law, we were not paid a single cent for 3.5 months. We can’t sue the company as they are in Judicial management on purpose, because they transfer all the $$$ into China. No help was available for us as we were not covered under the employment act (for supervisors and above). The MD is a Malaysia PR, and so, nothing can be done to him. i had to leave as i cannot afford to perform charity work for them, getting no salary while they enjoy themselves in China.
I then worked for another US MNC for 10 years where i was taking care of the Asia Pacific desk. My job was replace by an Indonesian FT in 2008. As usual, there was only 2 months compensation, thanks to Singapore labour Law. In fact, the CFO told me that i am lucky to get months pay because they can just pay me one month, in accordance to the employment contract. CFO is another FT.

Anyway, jobless for 10 months before landing a job in a Jap company. Pay is 30% of what i used to get. I can’t even survive on this salary, let alone feeding my family.

What has happened to Singaporeans? Even the Government is not helping it’s own citizens. Whenever i hear the stupid Halima or some shit name like that…she is suppose to propose to the Govt to tweak the Labour law, i really want to vomit.

Singapore is unique where the Goverment screw it’s own citizens and pretend that nothing has happened.
Foregniers are welcome with open arms. Citizens are deny places in the University where foregniers who can’t speak good english are awarded places to study.

You cheated 20 cents on bus fare and they send you to jail. You throw tissue on the floor and they fine you $300.
Your parking coupon expire by 10 minutes and they fine you.

You lose $10 Billion and will be assured to get a promotion.

This is the sorry plight of Singapore and Singaporeans due to our government.

In distress of unemployment, women seeking employment are particularly vulnerable to sexual exploitation and blackmail.

    http://business.asiaone.com/Business/News/Office/Story/A1Story20100322-206008/5.html

And it is impossible to legislate to protect them.

With so many foreigners now in the workplace, the work culture could be changing beyond recognition as foreigners have different moral values that our culture have cultivated over a long time.

With so many foreigners in key HR roles now, it is disturbingly worry for females.

I don’t want to read or hear about our young females subject to sexual harassment at work – whether the employer/boss is foreigner or local.

Economic distress aggravate exploitative sexual misconduct at work.

Government should change criminal law to include “grooming” employees for uninvited sexual attention just like pedophile grooming kids for sex on the internet when there is documentary evidence such as this one above.

Recently the govt decided to reduce the number of PRs issued, but what i am wondering is whether is it being reduced the right way. I have heard people saying that their PRs was not approved, and they are very puzzled. Mind you these people are not from China nor India, and they hold high education qualification and have skills that perhaps Singaporeans are not well-known for.

I mean honestly if Singapore govt wants to reduce the number of PRs that are being issued. Shouldn’t they make sure that the PRs are given to the RIGHT people instead to those who have higher chance of converting to Singapore Citizens?

Its rather strange that the govt is giving PRs to people who hold some unknown diploma/degree in unknown schools and not to those who can genuinely help the Singapore companies to grow.

What is Singapore coming to? Honestly, its rather disheartening to see my beloved country becoming from bad to worse.

NO. The manager is an FT. He/She will definitely prefer friend or relatives or natives from their own country, own provinces.

Enough is enough. Our government is not only deaf but blind also. Oh, what about the quotas? Seriously, it is a joke. Once upon a time, a pimp managed to sweet talk and rally a group of girls to work for him, he milked them dry, in the process he became so filthy rich.

Consistently he demanded his girls who were feeding him all the while, to work even harder so that he could continue to milk more out of them to put their earning into his reserve.

Over times, the original group of girls grew older, the pimp started to look around and recruited more younger and prettier girls to take over the older girls and he continue his business without appreciation and gratitude to the old girls who made him rich.

The poor old girls after working so hard in the past, contributed to the prosperity of the pimp, frequently got screwed by the same pimp for not working hard enough and eventually replaced and dumped away to fend for themselves.

A country that marginized its true born citizens by implementing laws that force its citizens to suffer pay cuts and retrenchment.
A country that, against the wishes of its citizens, welcome foreigners enmasses, and refuse to acknowledge its folly due to pride.
A country that forces it citizens to participate in its defense and yet betrayed its citizens at every turn.
A country no more… Singapore is no longer a country for Singaporeans. It had became a filth bed for immigrant workers to come and sleep, work and leave. We had served our country in vain. Our parents and grandparents had worked to achieve a better future for us. Me…. i cannot visualize a future for me or my child in Singapore.

Our country had been govern by traitors and fools. For 10 years, mistakes had been made and covered up. what we are seeing and hearing may just be the tip of the iceberg. We must reclaim Singapore for Singaporeans.

I was hesitant and thought I would hold on and see how. After reading all these comments, I think there is really nothing to hold on to in Sg. It is no longer the Sg I knew and grew up in. Better cut and run before the rule changes about CPF withdrawals upon giving up citizenship. The day may come when the Sg government squandered all the funds and have cannot pay us back our hard-earned money. So easy for PAP to change the rules to suit them because there is so little resistance, plus now with so many imported new singaporeans and PRs added to the electorate, all the harder to vote PAP out.

they may say that we are not hard driving enough.. its our fault.. thats why the foreigners are able to ‘kope’ our jobs from us.. but i think its bcos we just cannot settle with low pay.. because it is simply not enough to sustain our lifestyles in singapore.. of cos.. those people up there will never be able to share our sentiments.. they hold high pays.. mingle with really talented and equally high income earners.. so they see foreigners as ‘treasures’.. but we on the common ground see the Truth..

foreigners contribute to singapore of cos.. they are cheaper.. this in turn pushes up our gdp.. this would be good if these ‘advantages’ are shared among ALL singaporeans, nt just those on top.. but the truth is it is not. my grandmother died without proper hospital care because medisave and money is used up.. these are what we commoners, or in their minds ‘peasants’ are facing..

Adam Khoo: The expats will rule Singapore
Posted by admin 28 January, 2010

I have a prediction. My prediction is that in a couple of years, the expatriates (from China , India , US etc…) will rule Singapore . They will increasingly take on more leadership roles of CEOs, directors, heads of organizations, award winners etc… If you observe closely, it is already happening now..

Last year’s top PSLE (Primary School Leaving Exam) student is a China National. Most of the deans list students and first class honours students in the local universities are foreigners and more and more CEOs, even that of government link corporations are expats. The top players in our National teams are expats.

As a Singaporean, I am not complaining. I think that in a meritocratic society like Singapore , it is only fair that the very best get rewarded, no matter their race, religion or nationality. Like Lee Kuan Yew said, I’d rather have these talented and driven people be on our team contributing to our nation than against us from their home country. The question I have been asking is, ‘why are the expats beating the crap out of Singaporeans?’

What I noticed is that these expats have a very important quality that many Singaporeans (especially the new Y generation lack).. It is a quality that our grandfathers and great-grandfathers (who came from distant lands) had that turned Singapore from a fishing village to the third richest country in the world (according to GDP per capita). Unfortunately, I fear this quality is soon disappearing from the new generation of Singaporeans.

This quality is the HUNGER FOR SUCCESS and the FIGHTING SPIRIT!!!

Expats who come here today have the same tremendous HUNGER for success that our grandfathers had. They are willing to sacrifice, work hard and pay the price to succeed. They also believe that no one owes them a living and they have to work hard for themselves. They also bring with them the humility and willingness to learn.

Take the case of Qui Biqing, the girl from Qifa Primary school who topped the whole of Singapore in last year’s PSLE with a score of 290. When she came to Singapore 3 years ago from China , she could hardly

speak a word of English and didn’t even understand what a thermometer was. Although she was 10 years old, MOE recommended she start at Primary 2 because of her lack of English proficiency. After appealing, she managed to start in Primary 3. While most Singaporeans have a head start of learning English at pre-school at the age of 3-4 years old, she only started at age 10.. Despite this handicap, she had the drive to read continuously and practice her speaking and writing skills, eventually scoring an A-star in English!

This hunger and drive can also be seen in the workforce. I hate to say this but in a way, I sometimes think expats create more value than locals.

Expats are willing to work long hours, go the extra mile, are fiercely loyal to you and don’t complain so much. They also come a lot more qualified and do not ask the moon for the remuneration. Recently, I placed an ad for a marketing executive. Out of 100+ resumes, more than 60% came from expats. While locals fresh grads are asking for $2,500+ per month, I have expats with masters degrees from good universities willing to get less than $2,000! They know that if they can come in and learn and work hard, they will eventually climb up and earn alot more. They are willing to invest in themselves, pay the price for future rewards. Sometimes I wonder how some of the locals are going to compete with this.

Of course, this is just a generalization. There ARE definitely some Singaporeans who create lots of value and show fighting spirit.

Unfortunately, I have found that more and more young Singaporeans lack this hunger for success. Instead, they like to complain, blame circumstances and wait for others to push them. Some hold on to the attitude that the world owes them a living. I shake my head when I see local kids nowadays complain that they don’t have the latest handphones, branded clothes and games. While I acknowledge that the kids of today are much smarter and well informed than I was at their age (my 4 year old daughter can use my Macbook computer and my iphone), I find that they lack the resilience and tenacity they need to survive in the new economy. Some kids nowadays tend to give up easily once they find that things get tough and demand instant gratification. When they have to work first to get rewards later, many tend to lack the patience to follow through.

So, how did this happen? Why is our nation of hardworking, hungry fighters slowly becoming a nation of complaining softies? I think the problem is that life in Singapore has been too good and comfortable. Kids today have never seen hunger, poverty, war and disasters. What makes it worse is that parents nowadays give kids everything they want and over protect them from hardship and failure. Parents often ask me why their kids lack the motivation to study and excel. My answer to them is because they already have everything! Giving someone everything they want is the best way to kill their motivation. What reason is there for them to fight to become the best when they are already given the best from their parents without having to earn it?

It reminds me of the cartoon movie MADAGASCAR where Alex the Lion and his animal friends were born and raised in the Central Park Zoo. They were well taken care of and provided with processed food and an artificial jungle. When they escaped to Africa , they found that they could barely survive in the wild with the other animals because they had lost their instincts to fight and hunt for food. They could only dance and sing.

I see the same thing in the hundreds of seminars and training programmes I conduct. I see increasingly more and more expats attending my Wealth Academy and Patterns of Excellence programme in Singapore . Not surprisingly, they are always the first to grab the microphone to answer and ask questions.

While many of the locals come in late and sit at the back.. The expats (especially those from India and China ) always sit at the front, take notes ferociously and stay back way after the programme is over to ask questions. I feel ashamed sometimes when I ask for volunteers to ask questions, and the Singaporeans keep quiet, while the foreigners fight for the opportunity.

For my “I Am Gifted!’ programme for students, I have the privilege to travel & conduct it in seven countries ( Singapore , Indonesia , Hong Kong , China , Malaysia etc…) and see students from all over. Is there a big difference in their attitude and behaviour? You bet!

Again, I feel really sad that in Singapore , most students who come are usually forced by their parents to come and improve themselves, Some parents even bribe them with computer games and new handphones to attend.

During the course, some adopt the ‘I know everything’ attitude and lack the interest to succeed until I kick their butts. It is so different when I go to Malaysia , Indonesia and once in India . The kids there ask their parents to send them to my programme They clap and cheer enthusiastically when the teachers enter the room and participate so willingly when lessons are on. I still scratch my head and wonder what happened to my fellow Singaporeans to this day.

So mark my words, unless the new generation of Singaporeans wake up and get out of their happy over protected bubble and start fighting for their future, the expats (like our great grandfathers) will soon be the rulers of the country. At the rate at which talented and hungry expats are climbing up, our future prime minister may be an Indian or China PR or may even be an Ang Moh!

reading all these comments may have worked in the favor of employers who hire FTs. sometimes FTs lower wages of maybe too negligible an issue to deny employment to a local. if i were an employer, i will consider a more appreciative and probably a more pleasant FT to work with over your typical low EQ, self centered, always complaining, greedy, rude, pretentious, gossipy and arrogant Singaporean who will have no qualms to quit and join another company for an extra few dollars in salary.

i think some of these Singaporeans deserve losing their rice bowl to FTs. hopefully, this will whip them to shape and raise their EQ and SERVICE level by a lot.

In 1997, I was 9 years old.My family and I went to Sydney for a holiday. We visited a local supermarket. My grandma is illiterate and therefore she can’t speak english. My grandma was chatting with my Aunt in malay while browsing for foodstuff. Suddenly,we bumped into a local white lady. She heard my grandma spoke in malay and this was what the local white lady said,”You bloody bastard!! You bloody IMMIGRANT!! Speak english u bloody immigrant!! You fucking migrant!!”. We all had the shock of our lives because we have never experience such discrimination before. For your info, we were tourists, not migrants. Eventually, she was stopped by her grown up son. Her son apologised to us profusely and we accepted his apology on behalf of his mum. Her son dragged her out of the supermarket feeling embarrassed. Lesson: Although the vulgarities and discriminatory remarks made to my grandma were unnecessary, Now that I’m 22, I understood how that australian lady must have felt. Perhaps she felt that migrants were flocking to her country on a large scale. Now,I sort of like feel what she felt at that point of time. Migrants are taking our livelihoods away. Slowly, singaporeans are made to feel like shit with the goverment’s pro-foreigner policies. I’m only 22. Yet I worry so much about my future because of the unfavourable policies the government made. Will my future children and grandchildren suffer worse than what we are suffering now? The only options we have is to vote PAP out or to leave this god forsaken country. Lastly, why am I made to feel that my own birthplace is treating me like a 2nd class citizen?

Is it not the education system that has failed Singaporeans? If children in Sg have no drive, no motivation, no hunger, it is because they have no time to be adventurous, no opportunities to take risks and no support to just plain “try”! The Sg society and schools frown on failures and make children (consequently young Singaporeans) feel absolutely shameful to have failed. Children are put into a pressure cooker to study and study in the hope of excelling academically. Many times, they are even forced to study what they do not like. It is hard to be motivated in such circumstances. It is impossible to develop street-smart children when they have no opportunities to explore, to try, to fail and be accepted and encouraged to try again! Foreigners come from countries where they have to fight for survival. The Sg govt tells us do this and that and that and you will survive in fact, you WILL succeed! When people follow the “rules” and find they cannot survive much less succeed, whose fault is it? The playing field has changed in a very short space of time. Singaporeans born out of the Sg education system are not equipped to “fight” like the foreigners. Whose fault is it? Who made the rules? Who changed the playing field? Who failed to equip the people with the right skills? The govt either chooses to butt out and let people make their own choices right from the start and accept that some would walk a different path from what the govt would like, or guide and guide all the way. You can’t do it one way and then change your mind half way and abandon the group. Singaporeans are the product of the system. Is it the people who are flawed or is it the system? Singaporeans have to take responsibility for the plight they are currently in, but the govt is not absolved of any responsibility either. The worst thing is that when Singaporeans want to try something different for their lives, the govt change the rules again (e.g. election boundaries, GRC etc)…Singaporeans do not even have a chance to vote for the kind of govt they want. PAP tells you, you vote opposition, your mother, daughter, sister all become maids!

Does that mean that Singaporeans have to lower their salary demands to the levels asked by the PRCs and Myanmareses?

Furthermore, foreigners and their employers don’t have to contribute to CPF.. how to compete?

While locals fresh grads are asking for $2,500+ per month, I have expats with masters degrees from good universities willing to get less than $2,000! They know that if they can come in and learn and work hard, they will eventually climb up and earn alot more. They are willing to invest in themselves, pay the price for future rewards. Sometimes I wonder how some of the locals are going to compete with this.

I do not support your article or what is above. To have an indian as PM , yes, not if, will happen. We have an indian President, Amercia have Obama.
The problems with our younger generation think that the world belongs to them is what you think. I think it’s the system that is failing in singapore. I think more of who leads the country and how that cause this sort of thinking. I will not blame the people, but the gov. Because I have family members living overseas who are very passionate about leaving and enjoying going to school.
It is easy for foreign to work at low pay, cos the cost of maintanence is low for them. They may be sharing a apartment with many others, as compare to sg who have a family members to care for and loans for house. Beside my business will employ anyone willing to get low pay as this help them to make more money.
Maybe you should ask yourself, if you were to be retrenched, do you think you can get a job easily or if your boss decided to replace you with FT, how would you feel for sg.

PAP regime?employer?business owner? vs employee?self employed?

But one thing is for sure, if single dominant party system continue in SG, things will never change, it will likely deteriorate further. (incompetence + arrorgance = ?)

To quote Obama, we need “a govt of the people and by the people, still works for the people”

Fellow Singaporean don’t need “a govt of the $ and by the $$, still works for the $$$”

We have to weaken the absolute power. Vote for change, there is no other way, if we choose to stay put in this country.

kind enough? it is a fair trade – my work and skills for the pay. when u buy chicken u pay market rate. when u buy rojak u pay market rate. so employers too have to pay market rate.

    - You mentioned ‘if’ so that is not. Let me tell you, I ‘am’ an employer and I favor True Blue Singaporeans over FTs. Its rubbish craps like you who creates havoc here! If you call us ‘typical low EQ, self centered, always complaining, greedy, rude, pretentious, gossipy and arrogant Singaporean’, then are you not slapping yourself or are you selfcentred. If you are not a local, then please judge yourself first before commenting on others. From your statement, it seems like you are so arrogrant and low EQ. As one forumer here mentioned, I think you eaten too much maggie mee. Leave singapore if you feel this is not the place for you. Go rot somewhere else if you have some pride! Totally no shame!

    - Being an employer, I know that many thinks that P&L is important. I am too. But at least not true the exploits of our own people. Please if you think FTs have are good. Well think again. They don’t give a damn about this nation. To them earning money is important once they done, they just wipe their ass and move off. Many FTs are not really FTs, infact the quality leaves me in doubt. I wonder what is the basis of FT by ICA? If this FTs are really quality from top universities in the world, you think they do not know what is the market value and ask for it? Those FTs are what we should consider not those cheap, low quality shit. It is normal for local employees to complain, cause with the current situation now, with the influx of these FTrash, if you are not complaining then I seriously think you have a problem up there. You think you can rely on these Ftrash, good for you cause your foresight is indeed very narrow.

Actually do you all know that a foreigner can just come singapore and stay for 12 months AND THEN start looking for a job?
Do you all know that the ratio of local to foreigner is a joke? Local = singaporean + PR, whatever the ratio is, you can first hire a foreigner, then help the foreigner to become a PR, then you can continue to bring in as many foreigners as you like!!

Way back in 2000-2001 there was the trend for cheaper engineers, I was working as an engineer in a MNC back then.

the senior engineer was a Malaysian PR, he was in charge of hiring, of the 6-7 engineers he hired only 2 are Singaporeans, the rest are Malaysian, about 20% locals. I can tell you there wasn’t lack of quality Singaporean ENGINEERS! NUS, NTU and ranked UK degrees (full time in UK) not good enough?? Prefer malaysia degrees and unknown Uni certs?

It is true that they will hire their own people. I knew the situation now is much worst, especially when the economy is still not out of the woods.

Today I asked a friend(malaysian PR) who is currently working at Seagate, most of the staff are PRs (Malaysia, China, Philipines, India) how about Singaporeans??

This is a fact, pretty soon most Singaporeans will find it very tough for jobs unless working for Govt. and it will not be easy to have a job in your own country. those avaliable are the low entry levels – cleaners, security guards. (not that i disrespect these jobs)

our country is screwed, this island will sink.

    Dear Judy and fellow Singaporeans,

As much as we dislike our jobs being taken by foreigners, we should think reasonably and not blame them. If you have an opportunity to earn more money overseas, you would have become an FT in another Country too.

Blame the government. No use taking it out on the foreigners. Take it out on the culprit who created this situation.

And please don’t think the situation will get better because it will NOT if we just sit around doing nothing but rave and rant. There is something you can do but you refuse to do it. Vote the PAP out if you want the situation to change. Why is that so difficult for some people to understand??!! You are already in dire strait, so what have you got to lose. Ok, if the PAP is toppled, there may be some disarray for a start but it is definitely better than having your situation getting worse day-by-day. If you still vote for the PAP in the next election and the situation got worse, you only have yourself to blame. Simple as that!

To all employee class Native Singaporeans, this is something that you must know. The PAP allow companies to employ ZERO SINGAPOREANS. Yes, you did not hear wrongly, ZERO SINGAPOREANS.

Majority of employee class Singaporeans are still unaware that they will be driven to extinction soon. In George Yeo’s reply to kojakbt_89 about RWS hiring Singaporeans, he said that:

“MOM’s policy is to set dependency ratios and leave it to companies to operate freely within them. I don’t think MOM will release data for specific companies. CPF info is confidential. Why not get an MP to ask the question in Parl, PAP or Opp or NMP? But under MOM, no MFA please.”

    http://forums.delphiforums.com/n/mb/message.asp?webtag=3in1kopitiam&msg=29090.1

So what does dependency ratios mean? The answer can be found from MOM website:

    http://www.mom.gov.sg/publish/momportal/en/communities/work_pass/work_permit/application/requirements/computation_of_company.html

e.g. For a Services Sector company (dependency ratio 50%) with a total of 10 employees, they can hire 5 PRs and 5 foreigners. You see, a company can don’t hire a single Singaporean citizen and still comply with MOM regulations without breaking the law. This is because PR and Singapore citizens are considered as “local”. We also know how easy it is for foreigners to obtain Singapore PR nowadays.

    Hi everyone,

I am compelled to write again after reading accounts from Maggie Mee and Adamn Khoo. For every complaint of Singaporeans being picky with poor work etiquette, I can think of examples of foreign workers who are unqualified as well.

Take the the situation at my friend’s company. Her company’s executives are full of malaysians, taiwanese and china PRC with poor English skills. In order to draft any business proposals, this is what they have to do

    1) open IE/ firefox and navigate to http://translate.google.com/#

    2) type out the word in chinese e.g. accounting.

    3) click on the “translate” button

    4) copy and paste the translated word back into microsoft office.

    5) repeat steps 1-4 to translate any unknown english words into chinese to understand

    6) repeat steps 1-5 ad nauseum/ infinitely through the whole day until your 6 pages of business proposals are finished

Is it any wonder why my friend needed to rewrite the rubbish-y business proposals of 2-3 foreign talents at the end of the day? all of them claim to be graduates from some unknown universities but their work say otherwise.

So, local employers! please give your fellow Singaporeans a chance! do not be mistaken by cheap foreign talents. you get what you pay for.

Looks like there is some sort of anti-govt feeling brewing here. I agree that our govt is really letting alot of people down, especially over the past few years. It is true that in the coming general election, we can use our votes to convey the people’s message to PAP. But sad to say, the opposition do not even have enough substance to run a coffeeshop, let alone a country. There is no evidence to show that should the opposition gain power, they have the capability to maintain our growth and prosperity or to solve the current problems many have stated on this thread.
I will vote. It is my honour and responsibility of a citizen of Singapore. My head tells me not to vote for the inadequate opposition. My heart tells me not support the PAP because they did not do enough the last four years to earn my vote. It is highly likely that I will be marking a star on the PAP side on the voting ticket. Yes, it will void my vote. But IF there is an unusually high number of voided votes, maybe, just maybe our govt will finally take the hint and do a better job the next four years.
