Chee-Chiam cat-fight and the art of shooting oneself in the foot

OPINION

Even before the electoral battle has began proper, the Singapore opposition has managed to start a cat-fight among themselves which is making them a bigger clown than the beleaguered Jack Neo who should seriously consider a movie on the longest political saga in Singapore.

In 1993, opposition veteran Chiam See Tong left the Singapore Democratic Party he founded under acrimonious circumstances due to differences in opinions with his CEC members over the hungry strike conducted by his protege Dr Chee Soon Juan.

As expected, the state media tried to play up the enmity between the two men by portraying Dr Chee as an unscrupulous upstart who “ousted” his mentor from the party.

Dr Chee has already posted an explanation about what happened on the SDP website.

17 years later, the controversy was dredged up again unwittingly by Dr Chee himself who told Lianhe Zaobao in an interview last month that he had tried his best to persuade Mr Chiam to stay on as SDP’s leader who later joined the Singapore People’s Party (SPP).

This prompted a reply from Mr Chiam’s wife Ms Lina Loh who accused Dr Chee in another interview with Lianhe Zaobao last Sunday of “distorting” the truth resulting a tit-for-tat exchange between the two camps of supporters in cyberspace much to the delight of the PAP.

With an election around the corner, the spectre of in-fighting among the opposition will return to haunt them again as they have proven to be incapable of setting aside their petty differences for the greater goal ahead.

The recurrent spat between SDP and SPP over an incident long past is perfect publicity for the PAP to smear the opposition as a group of immature, naive and insensible “riff-rafts”.

Both Dr Chee and Ms Lina Loh who is expected to participate in the next general election still don’t get it – the truth is irrelevant in politics especially when the saga had happened years ago, it is public perception which matters most right now.

It reflects very badly on them including the parties they represent that they chose to wash a 17-year old “dirty linen” in public again to refresh not only the memories of those who are aware of it, but the young voters who do not have any inkling of what transpired between the two men as well.

To put it bluntly: it is an absolute PR disaster for both SDP and SPP. The Singapore opposition seriously has a knack of shooting themselves in the foot, not only once, but repeatedly by giving SPH and the PAP free ammunitions to shoot at them!

It’s quite pointless to put the blame on the hapless journalist who conducted the interviews when both have been so forthcoming with sensitive information to buttress their own positions.

Can Singaporeans really trust the opposition to fight for their interests when they are busy scratching and biting one another over such a trivial affair?

Will SPP or SDP  score any political points among voters by throwing mud at each other? Who will be the winner in the end? The answer is obvious.

The only way out of the present impasse is NOT to go to the media again or take pot shots at one another in cyberspace but to put up a “wayang” to deflect public attention and to shift the blame back to SPH.

Dr Chee and Mr and Mrs Chiam should meet up for dinner together with other party leaders, bury the hatchet (whether they are sincere about it is another matter altogether) and issue a joint press statement on the controversy to close the case once and for all so that SPH will not be able to make use of the historical animosities between them to drive a wedge in the opposition again.

The proposed joint statement by SDP and SPP can be along the lines of:

“Over the past few days, there were some articles made in the media on Mr Chiam’s departure from SDP in 1993. We regret to say that the remarks made by both Dr Chee and Ms Lina Loh had been quoted out of context by the media. Both SDP and SDA enjoy a cordial relationship with each other and will continue to work together to serve the interests of all Singaporeans.”

Such a statement will save the “faces” of both parties, take the heat off them and arrow the blame back to SPH again which doesn’t have a reputation for objective, fair and balanced coverage on the opposition anyway, thereby “killing two birds with one stone.”

While we have no right or business to interfere in the internal affairs of SDP and SPP, we hope they will take our proposal into consideration.

With public unhappiness and resentment against the PAP at an all-time high, the next general election will be an ideal opportunity for the opposition to snare a few more seats in Parliament including a GRC provided that they get their act together.

There are no permanent friends or foes in life, let alone politics. An enemy of yesterday may become a most trusted ally in the future.

Unless the opposition band together under a common platform like Malaysia’s Pakatan Rakyat coalition, they can never stand a chance against the PAP juggernaut which controls all institutions of the state including the police, media, civil society and grassroots organizations.

A dinner between Mr Chiam and Dr Chee is too long in the waiting. Surely Mr Chiam will have the magnanimity to forgive the man whom he brought into politics in the first place and had suffered tremendously for the last 20 years under the repressive PAP regime?

In fact, I don’t mind hearing Chee’s side of the story.

He’s been publicly accused of outing Chiam for decadedes. For the sake of being fair, it’s time to given him a chance of self-defence.

Well written piece of article! There is no point to go into ‘finger-pointing’ at this juncture as the issue happened so long ago and it is time to join forces in the upcoming elections.

As politicians, they have the duty to serve the people first and not personal self-interest. There’s a old saying of the fight between the crane and fish will only stand to benefit the fisherman who is waiting at the sideline. Whoever wins or lose, will still be a loser to the ‘fisherman’.

Don’t give the main stream media any opporunities to protray opposition parties as a rag-tag disorganised team that is rift with conflicts. Which isn’t true.

The opportunity to really see change in government is now! The people are upset the Temasek losses, the high cost of living and overcrowded singapore. With the faux-pas of the MPs in the Parliment, people are begining to see that the PAP is not without serious flaws.

Do not loss sight of the big picture SDP and SDA!

eg. 2nd sentence : there should be a comma after ‘he founded’ and after ‘circumstances’ and many more througout the article.

(please corect me if I am wrong)

On the ‘characters’ mentioned in the article, could it be that a few could be on the PAP payroll? Sort of the Wayang Kulit they play in Indonesian and Malaysian Politics?

After all, there was an ex-opposition member, a lawyer, who used to slam LKY and other PAP members with all sort of inuendos and derogatory remarks and he never once was taken to task by anyone.

    Divide and Rule?

    Same scenario, all over again?

comment from sdp’s website… interested to hear what dr chee has to say in defence.

PAP keep harping on this through their media because this is a “sure win” tactic.

Obviously, Mr Chiam and his family still bear a grudge against SDP or else they would not say things that can be exploited by the media.

Whether you like it or not, the truth is that Mr Chiam behaved in a tyrannical way, which is why he was voted out by the CEC members. And no matter how one spins it, this puts him in the bad light. This is why it is a lose-lose for SDP. If you explain yourself, it makes Mr Chiam looks bad, and he or his family hits back, along with a host of his opposition supporters. If you do not explain, it makes SDP looks back.

The only way is really to patch up with the Chiam family, especially before Mr Chiam goes the way of JBJ, else it will forever be a scar.

Right not opposition parties are so disunited, even all the many deadly mistakes PAP make, they will never be voted out because voters do not see a viable alternative. Only a pan of loose sands.

SDP may want unity but it seems all other opposition parties do not want unity at all.

And without unity from opposition, PAP wins again. And every year, countless Singaporeans who are fed up with the PAP will migrate off this shitty island, leaving only the stooges of PAP behind to fawn over them and piss at opposition parties.

What happened in SDP that led to the departure of Chiam was nothing but a democratic process in any political party that believes in collective leadership. The founder of Workers’ Party, Singapore’s first chief minister David Marshall also left the party over some disagreement with his party colleagues.

J B Jeyaretnam also had the same fate in WP after leading it for thirty years. But this JBJ vs LTK saga that happened only nine years ago is not talked about because JBJ was the bad guy in the eyes of the PAP. So, the PAP-controlled media remains mum.

Chiam, who’s not in good health wants to make his wife his successor in Potong Pasir. Obviously, she does not have anything of substance for the electorate and the easy way out is to flog the hobby horse that is Chee. The others in Chiam’s SPP are distancing themselves from talking about the Chiam vs Chee issue that happened more than 18 years ago.

Since Chee is considered a serious threat to the PAP, its controlled media goes to town with anything and everything to badmouth Chee.

I got your drift..Oh,it does matter..But this recent hyped up Chee vs Chiam is the doing of the PAP by the brothel operators in the Braddell Road–read SPH.

It’s different; because it’s not a matter of that ‘truth or bust ‘ sort of thingy but just an unofficial election campaigning by the PAP.

We ought to know that difference.

I always thought Devan Nair was unfairly dragged down by LKY for all that Devan had done for LKY.

In a way there is some truth and some lies in it because when I talked to some of the older generation lately ,to my shock and disgust,I found out Devan & LKY actually were partners in the crime so as to speak…..Henceforth whatever injustice I felt for Devan vanished.

Is Devan the sort of fella who simply vanishes away ?..not him many who knows him says so.How than was he so easily cowed by LKY…Alcohol?..not really lah !…Because the same old generation also tells it was E.W.Baker who cannot pass a day without Scotch.

It was thus told that Devan was the stick LKY used to humble Indian voters to toe his line..Since Devan was the Labor Union chief where most Indian were…Particularly in the than PSA and Naval Base in Sembawang….Just as LKY used Malays to break Malays voters and Chinese to break Chinese voters.

Yes,I agree that the truth should emerge and we deserve to know it but I don’t think the Chee vs Chiam case is detrimental to any others except to themselves.

It seems to me that the spouses of several opposition politicians are either:

    1) Blabbermouths who cannot handle the media.

    or

    2) Moles planted by the PAP.

I am reminded of the incident when Steve Chia’s wife told the press about his ‘hobby’.

If you’re the wife of a politician, be it ruling or politician, or even non-politicians such as celebrities, the last thing you want to do is to wash dirty linen in public and jeopardise your husband’s career. When in doubt, STFU and decline comment. Is that too hard to do?

This is especially true of opposition politicians in Singapore. Te mainstream media, the running dogs and poor prostitutes, will pounce on every morsel of leaked information to discredit the opposition, including but not limited to quoting your comments out of context. This is their job, this is their purpose. And this is the reason why RSF gave them a poor international ranking consistently.

We will never know the inside story but then Chiam did found SDP, why would he resign from his old creation if he was not ousted? Does not make sense. its like saying LKY resigns from PAP. Its near impossible unless he was ousted.

Don forget when Chiam left SDP, his votes dropped a lot too since many ppl who voted for him was said to recognise SDP logo rather than his name.

anyway whatever the case, its not helping the opposition cause.

Dr Chee, if you are really serious about your party and Singapore, you should ignore all these frivilous attacks. It’s milk gone stale. Chiam and his family can accuse you 1 or 100 times does it make any difference?????

To Mr Chiam and Mr Chee

    GROW UP.
You are suppose to lead the bloody opposition against the oppressive PAP with some decent support from the masses.

If you guys just continue to mud sling each other, you will just erode the public support, and more ppl will choose to cast spoilt votes. That is what PAP wants!!

Singapore is not USA. We do not have a system whereby a single person will represent the whole state. We have a bloody SECTION to represent an estate, so we will need as many opposition representative as possible. Both of you overgrown kids OWED it to me and my generation to right the wrong you had done. Your infighting had damned the opposition for 17 years. Think of the future of the younger singaporeans

    To jiangbao:

Chiam was VOTED OUT by the CEC of SDP at that time. Go ask CEC member from that time if you want – their answer will be the same.

After that Chiam resigned because he said that the CEC has lost confidence in him, so that it wouldn’t look bad like he was voted out only.

That they are the only Singaporeans who have ‘talents’??? What kind? They don’t even have the right kind of humour. except of the daft kinds like LSS’s “We daft to other opinions”. Think he meant IDEAS? But then he isn’t talented enough even to know that Eleanor Franklin Roosevelt, the late USA First Lady said that only “Great minds discuss ideas” I’ve read here in TR!… Oooo… so many such examples of hairy ministers… no need to repeat anymore. Just fire and march them out the door!

1st problem) Whenever the Mainstream media approached them Opposition go…ga ga
Dr Chee (should had know better) the State Media is not there is give a “fair, accurate and balanced interview” and they are not there to help his cause

2nd problem) The Dr Chee interview which is alittle twisted, had been tweaked alittle, had an impact on SPP members, they got really annoyed and irrirated. (Linda fall for it, wholesales) As we all know it, Linda responsed to her side of the story

(If Linda completely stop going to the press) and the story contiunes on the newspapers. We can brush it off as “smearing campiagn” launch by the Right Wing Media

It is about time Dr Chee pay a visit to his old friend Mr Chaim, buy some oranges and clear the air. Offer Linda a glass of lukewarm tea, let bygones be bygones. Post some pictures taken together on the websites and the end of the story

  • Isn’t this the same Chee who was once accused by his Boss,Associate Professor Vasu of NUS, of over claiming transport claims?

Or was that fixed by the PAP too?

Why haven’t heard Chee sued Vasu for this!

Or did I miss this episode?

TR should touch on this too since they’re bringing past issues back!
