Singaporean working in China lashed out at grouses of Singapore PRs

Written by Our Correspondent

A Singaporean working in China on non-expatriate terms has lashed out at the complaints and grouses of some Singapore PRs like Mr Vishal Garg and his wife Shweta in last Saturday’s report in the Straits Times. (‘Almost Singaporean’) in which they complaint about recent cosmetic changes introduced by the PAP to better “differentiate” Singapore citizens from PRs.

“If my son can’t get into a good school because of the balloting, what do I tell him? That it was because you are not Singaporean?” Ms Shweta was quoted as saying in the Straits Times.

Ms Shweta sparked a massive outcry last year with a series of letters to the Straits Times Forum complaining about her child’s predicament and triggering a spat of protests from angry Singaporeans.

One Singapore writer suggested that her husband served two years of National Service before even contemplating enjoying the same rights and privileges as native Singaporeans.

In his letter to the Straits Times Forum today, Mr Patrick Tan related his own personal experience in China where foreigners are regarded as “aliens”:

“I cannot afford to buy a home in China because prices are almost as stiff as in Singapore and I cannot use my Central Provident Fund savings. My two sons cannot attend local schools or participate in local sports because they are not Chinese citizens. They must attend an international school and their annual school fees alone cost more than for a pair of four-year degree courses at the National University of Singapore,” he wrote.

Due to the PAP’s liberal immigration and pro-foreigner policies, foreigners now make up 36 percent of Singapore’s population, up from 14 percent in 1990. Of the remaining 64 percent who are citizens, an increasing number are born overseas.

Unlike other developed countries, it is relatively easy for foreigners to find work in Singapore and obtain a PR within a year. According to the Home Affairs Ministry, every two out of three PR applicants are succcessful, an astonishingly high success rate.

There are some schemes like the landed PR scheme in which foreigners are able to obtain PR even before setting foot onto Singapore.

Foreigners are hailed as “gods” by the PAP government while locals are described as being lazy, unmotivated and daft.

In a recent interview with the National Geographic magazine, PAP strongman Lee Kuan Yew said it is a “good” thing that Singapore has welcomed so many Chinese immigrants (from mainland China) as they are more “hard-driving” and “hard-striving” than locals.

Mr Patrick Tan obviously do not think too highly of some foreigners that the PAP has imported:

“It is true that some foreigners, for example a top biomedical scientist, bring special talents to Singapore and we must always welcome such talent. But for every top talent, there are hundreds who are here because there is good money to be made and Singapore is a vibrant and accommodating country. For many years, Singapore PRs have enjoyed benefits as that of citizens without having to pay for it. In Singapore, citizenship has its privileges, but at least we treat foreigners and PRs with respect and provide them with decent benefits at a minimum cost. In some countries, foreigners are called aliens.”

Singapore is perhaps the only country in the world where the government has no qualms splurging millions of dollars of taxpayers’ monies to provide free meals for foreigners and to celebrate their cultural festivals for them.

It is time the PAP changes its name to FAP or Foreigner Action Party to better reflect its current aspirations and visions – to serve the interests of the foreigners and NOT native Singaporeans.

Unless the FAP is voted out by the next general election, Singaporeans may really become “aliens” in their own country of birth one day.

Obviously PAP has been dredging the rubbish bins and attracting low end parasites posing as ‘talents’ who can’t afford to send their children to private schools. These ‘talents’ like Vishal or Shweta are mercenery in nature, they are only interested in scoring free meals and maximizing ‘profit’ at the expense of Singapore and Singaporeans.

You can only blame the FAP for letting in these houseflies and leeches.

  • The Truth:

Someone said made this link earlier but I felt that its so meaningful that I will repeat her thoughts.

Aesop’s Fable: The Goatherd and the Wild Goats

A GOATHERD, driving his flock from their pasture at eventide, found some Wild Goats mingled among them, and shut them up together with his own for the night. The next day it snowed very hard, so that he could not take the herd to their usual feeding places, but was obliged to keep them in the fold. He gave his own goats just sufficient food to keep them alive, but fed the strangers more abundantly in the hope of enticing them to stay with him and of making them his own. When the thaw set in, he led them all out to feed, and the Wild Goats scampered away as fast as they could to the mountains. The Goatherd scolded them for their ingratitude in leaving him, when during the storm he had taken more care of them than of his own herd. One of them, turning about, said to him: “That is the very reason why we are so cautious; for if you yesterday treated us better than the Goats you have had so long, it is plain also that if others came after us, you would in the same manner prefer them to ourselves.” Old friends cannot with impunity be sacrificed for new ones.

Fast Forward to today in Singapore arent we seeing the above replicated as we speak?
The outcome is perhaps a little different, the old herd is looking to be abandoning the Goatherd ahead of the wild ones so it could be likely that the Goatherd will end up with less of no goats at the end.

What have these 2 FTs contributed to our country? Who are they to demand better or more priviledged benefits than Singaporeans?

Does Singapore look like a red light country or for that matter Singaporeans are prostitutes for them to patronise and bargain at theirr terms?

Ms Shweta, in some popular childcare centres and kindergartens among the Indians, there are many local Singaporean Indians unable even to send their kids to either one because they were all taken by Indian PRs and Indian expats kids.

Local Singaporean Indian children were put on a long waiting list far way behind foreigners and others.

  • Ok, this is ONE instance I DO NOT agree with the author who claims: “I cannot afford to buy a home in China because prices are almost as stiff as in Singapore and I cannot use my Central Provident Fund savings. My two sons cannot attend local schools or participate in local sports because they are not Chinese citizens. They must attend an international school and their annual school fees alone cost more than for a pair of four-year degree courses at the National University of Singapore,”

    Point by Point rebuttal:

1:I cannot afford to buy a home in China because prices are almost as stiff as in Singapore and I cannot use my Central Provident Fund savings.

Bull, depending on locality, a unit in ShangHai or Beijing is surely HIGH and comparable to Sinkapore but in Wuhan where I bought my 3+2 unit just on the outskirt of town, it cost me only approx RMB 500,000 and thats way way cheaper than a 4 room in Sinkapore.

CPF is only figures on paper applicable to Sinkapore and you expect China to honor a piece of Sinkapore toilet paper? LOL

2: My two sons cannot attend local schools or participate in local sports because they are not Chinese citizens. They must attend an international school and their annual school fees alone cost more than for a pair of four-year degree courses at the National University of Singapore,”

Another Bull, International Schools are NOT as expensive as author claims, certainly the fees are no where near to what a degree would cost in Sinkapore.

I am really curious as to WHICH CITY the author is working in?

Anyway, having said that, I have seen people I know living like an Emperor (ie: comfortably) with only SGD 250,000 in China, NOT in Beijing or ShangHai of course.

Its just whether YOU know HOW.

Well, I got to say how stupid the Singaporean who’s working in China! Is he an idiot? your children have to goto expensive international schools? I think you have lost your mind in China and I am not surprised at all as when a frog in a little well suddenly jumped out onto a big piece of land, everything is new to him and therefore he always believe what he heard and does not even think of doing his own research and trials in China.

Yes,the house and international schools are expensive,so If you don’t have $$$$ to survive there, pls go back to your own country, Chinese ppl don’t need you there and in China, complaint is useless. If you can’t earn an equivalent amount of S$20k-30k/pa in Shanghai, you are just a rubbish, even my Shanghai senior engineer earn 300kRMB/pa(ie 60KS$) there, and his flat is now worth of 3M RMB,he bought it 6 years ago at 650KRMB only. (S$1 = 4.9RMB)

I also look down those complaining PRs,foreigners. you are not Singaporeans, what the hell do you complain for? very natural that Singapore schools give priority to Singaporeans. If you think this is unfair, go back to your “beloved” country.

We must depend on our own when we move to a foreign country.

Lately i was tasked to interview candidates for an accountant position. I noted 2 trends:

    1. A lot of Singaporeans in the mid-30s who are being retrenched due to Company restructuring;

    2. PRs who come in asking for lower pay. But so far, the ones that I’ve interviewed are certainly not up to scratch. I can easily find 10 Singaporeans who are better qualified than the PRs. So these are the FTs that our dear government has been letting in all the time?

As a government, the 1st task is to try and solve the unemployment of the PMETs. Becauase they are the ones who have invested the most time for upgrading/ degree etc and then they ended up being replaced by “Foreign Trash”. It is a double-whammy for retrenched people as it is certainly not easy to find a job after you are being let go. And it is also not easy to find one that can pays as well.

After going through all the CVs, it has dawned on me that perhaps I will one day be replaced by this FTs too. Hence, i’m also putting off marriage, trying to save as much as I can during this period of time. You never know what’s going to happen in future…..

This is only the tip of the iceberg.

In near future these New Citizens will tell us locals to go and die elsewhere as they need the land for their water-sports and what not.

Oooops,I do forget it had already had happened ..Khaw a Penang born Malaysian Chinese already told our sick and old to go and die in JB right.

Comparatively amongst all the foreigners in our land the Malaysian Chinese are the worst lot-they do more damage than talk, second comes Indians from India ; particularly the North Indians typo with their loutish mouth and uncouth behaviour –sort of bark more than bite….I reckon the PRC comes third –lying low and buying time for now but a force to reckon with in 10 years time….in 15 years time PRC will head all our civil service and judiciary since all those PRC scholars now studying free in our schools would automatically be given citizenships and priority in government jobs ; as designed.

In 20 years time ,I foresee Singapore falling apart to pieces in racial superiority and racial riots far worse than ever seen in the entire history of Singapore…..Foreign intervention cannot be ruled out..Another Iraq in the making?

    How,how..you may ask !

It would most probably be between PRC turned citizens and Indians from India turned citizens.

    Why?

First the historical facts…PRC had always picked a fight with lands they occupied be it Tibetans or Uighur —their strength had always been in their number games ; sort of outnumber the native population.

This exactly what is going to happen in Singapore in 20 years time….there would be more PRC than any others simply put.

    Than.

The North Indians from India are no better than PRC in this respect..The bloody and murderous race and religious riots had always taken place in the Northern hemisphere of India…After almost 400 years after the Mogul empire the N.Indians are still killing their descendants…not to mention the caste war,rape,infanticide,bride-burning and etc etc…Just 1 state in N.India(Bihar)..has more of these crimes than all the southern states in India put together.

Both are a bad mix for Singapore.I mean the PRC & N.Indians…And it’s gonna get worse because unlike our ancestors who came from an impoverished ,poor and powerless S. China and S.India…These new migrants are coming from a nuclear powered super powers that are China and India of today.

Why should any of these new foreigners trade their identity and heritage belonging to a super race from a super power to a red-dot of no cultural and historical significance of no more than 20% to 25% of any of their mega cities like Shanghai or Mummbai?

    That says all.

What had PAP & LKY done to us ?…MM had always wondered whether if Singapore would still exist 100 years after…Perhaps our New Citizens are gonna give life to hi death wish !

I think the Singaporean may be referring to big cities such as Shanghai or Peking where property prices may rival that of our own country.

A high-end luxurious apartment can cost up to 3 million yuan (around S$600,000) if you buy in the inner urban cosmopolitan cities.

There is the fear of a property bubble of course.

However, if you stay in second or third tier Chinese cities such as Wuhan, Chengdu or Nanjing, properties are mostly cheaper at around 500,000 (S$100,000) to 800,000 (S$160,000)yuan per unit. Even properties in Suchow now exceeds one million yuan (S$200,000) per unit.

I used to teach in China two years ago and I stayed in a 3-bedroom apartment (approx 1200 sq ft) in a third tier city. It costs me only 500 yuan (S$100) per month rental. If I want to purchase the apartment it costs me only around 90,000 yuan (less than S$20,000).

Frankly I am surprised why Singaporeans never consider moving to live in China. It is so much cheaper and it is rather easy to get a teaching job – teaching English to foreign students.

    Hope this help.

BTW, if my kids do not get into prestige schools … can i also blame the gov for giving away some of the vacancies to foreigners hence decreasing my chances of success?

    this is not right.

the FTs who came here know what they’re in for; isn’t it so? i don’t go to other people’s home and demand for equal rights? it’s as if i go to somebody’s home and say i want to sleep in the master bedroom and demand equal status; this is atrocious!

i, allowing you to stay with me, in my home, doesn’t mean you and me shared the same equal rights. this makes perfect logical sense, isn’t it??

know where you stand and be humble. you and i know why you people are here in the first place. please.

but why isn’t the gov on the same side as us? aren’t they supposed to be our “guardian”? aren’t they supposed to take “more” care of us? do they still remember the vow they took when they assumed their MP?? for the citizens of singapore.

well. short term memory at its best for the intellectually few.

on the extreme, we’re supposed to be exploiting the FTs, else why we want them here?? but on the contrary we’re being exploited by them!! its a joke!!

if all fails, who’s gonna clear the mess?? sad to say, it’ll be us, the innocent citizens of singapore.

honestly, i’m exploring my options now, and i urge all folks to seriously consider your available options, as well.

    change is inevitable.

You are all angry, that is very obvious…but that doesn’t mean you have to stop making sense.

My 2 cent: Propose a full blown economic policy that relies less on foreign employees and more on local talent…and then start championing that. Argue your proposal’s superiority and feasibility over status quo if you want to add any value.

    5) PR staying more than 3years need to do NS or their PR status be automatically be void.

    6) HDB flat prices will come down gradually so that our youngsters are able to purchase their flats to get married and have more babies. With the increase of native couples having more babies is the only healthy, peaceful & sensible solution to increase one’s country population.

    7) Fake foreign talents shall be send home immediately.

Who are they to demand better or more priviledged benefits than Singaporeans?” You blamed everyone except yourself and stop demanding equal rights! Please keep in mind that you don’t belong to this land.

this means the actual number of local born citizens could be less than 50% by now. with the rate of change fueled by this liberal imm policies, singaporeans will be a minority in their country soon; i think they cud be less than 10% of the total population in 5 to 10 years. can anyone imagine the bold decisions of a few people can cause such speedy and drastic changes, like losing 20 years of savings in a few short months of speculations?

This is so very true. All it takes is brains and not just complaint and complaint.

However, China has no immigration policy to allow foreigners into taking China Citizenship although there are some unofficial and legal exceptions.

@peanuts, you are NOT wrong. The percentage of ‘imported’ citizens is crawling past the 50% mark and it is the ‘aim’ of the gahment to shoot past the mark so that they can maintain a steady pool of ‘obligated’ PAPies voters.

I can’t vouch for everywhere but I heard from reliable source ( a Chinese Professor) that outside the top 10 Universities in China, a lot of graduates bought their degrees by the route of “political donation” if their parents are rich enough. The educational system in PRC is highly corrupted – no less than other economic sector.

I am sure that we will be seeing more and more foreigners like Shweta making ridiculous and unreasonable complains and demands of this current weak pap government. If there are Singaporeans who still do not fully appreciate and understand the urgency of voting in opposition MPs to safeguard our national dignity, pride, collective national reserve, interest and way of life, then we deserve to be bullied and push aside by foreigners even in our own country. Unfortunately, the government is weak, but our people shouldn’t. Ask, if not me who, if not now, when? Come election, do the right thing for our country and our young ones.

“I think the Singaporean may be referring to big cities such as Shanghai or Peking where property prices may rival that of our own country.

It is so much cheaper and it is rather easy to get a teaching job – teaching English to foreign students.”

    Hi Gilbert,
I wanted to go to China to live but how is it possible since it is very difficult to get PR in China. Practically there are no PRs in China. So how to live there except when you get a working visa which will expire the moment you stop working there. As for teaching English, most teaching jobs go to native speakers, lots of them earning just a few thousand RMB a month.

It is true what the author Patrick has mentioned.

My husband has been posted by his company to Shanghai on and we are here for a couple of years now. I must clarify that I am not complaining about life in China because I know as foreigners, the Chinese government has no obligation to take care of our interest. It is true that the foreigners are not allowed to send our children to local schools. Neither are we allowed to buy their public housing meant for low income. Our children have to attend international school. One of the cheapest international school which is Shanghai Singapore international school charges school fees at rmb106,000 per annum for tuition fee for primary level. There are other cost required on top of that. Check http://www.SSIS.cn for people who doubt the cost. Also the private housing that aliens can buy are usually quite expensive as Shanghai is one province where the property prices have increased drastically.

Also the income tax in China for foreigners is really high. The highest rate for taxable income exceeding rmb100,000 (about S$20k) is 45%. In fact at income exceeding rmb40,000 (about S$8.5k) it is already at 30%. However,we accepted the fact that for whatever taxes we pay, we do not get any benefits in return except to be able to continue to have the chance to work in China. Try applying a green card in land rich china, you will need to wait very long and still may not be able to obtain.

Singapore is one of the few countries that accepted many foreigners’/PR children into local schools at much cheaper fee. It also allows foreigners/PR to buy HDB flats which is low cost housing meant for the lower income. Income tax is also relatively low. Also PR and even citizenship is quite easy to obtain in Singapore. The government policies are more than fair to the PR/foreigners otherwise there won’t be so many foreign talents of all levels flocking into Singapore. I just wonder why there are still complains.

It is also one of the very few countries where the government would, after taking taxpayers money to help foreigners/PR and also rewarding themselves with extremely high pay, still refer to some Singaporeans as lazy.

OK here is the good news..in 2015 Singapore New Sing GOV will stop taking any new immigrants.. As Singapore population was growing at a rate all of a sudden.. So all the road cleaning, cement work..dirty work..will be taken over by Singaporeans..Singapore mothers will be granted 3 year half paid “child care” leave.

Government will remove “Social integrity” program, instead will implement “Grand mama take care baby”program .Because year 2015 modern grand mama’s need to catch up “how to take care daughter in law’s or Daughters kids after 3 years”

All Education fee will be removed.. Child birth @ hospital no fee..total kids health care will be free or half pay (depend on the case). this is to support and enhance “need more baby’s” program to think Singaporeans to min get 3 kids at home.
