Dr Vivian slammed critics of PAP’s FT sports policy as being “small-minded”

PAP minister Dr Vivian Balakrishnan has lashed out at critics of the PAP’s “FT sports policy” in an unusual outburst during a youth forum yesterday.

He was responding to a question posed by a Singapore Institute of Management student who asked for his views on the need to engage foreign talent in local sports.

Dr Vivian appeared to be provoked by the seemingly innocuous question by launching a tirade against his critics by calling them names such as “small-minded”, “unfair” and “very, very selfish.”

“I believe that the survival and prosperity of Singapore depend on our remaining an open society – a society able to attract and absorb and integrate talent of all shapes, sizes, races, languages, religions, countries. In other words, do not judge people simply on where they are born,” he was quoted as saying in the Straits Times.

The PAP’s policy of spending taxpayers’ monies to lure foreign sportsmen and women to represent Singapore at international competitions has not gone down well with many Singaporeans who feel that the money should be better spent to nurture local talents.

Though the Singapore women table-tennis team beat China at the recent World Championship, the response from the ground has been lukewarm as the three players are all born in China and became Singapore citizens only lately.

Many netizens poured scorn on the “hollow” victory with some describing the match as between “China Team A versus Team B” and expressing their disgust at the PAP using money to “buy trophies”.

The pro-foreigner Dr Vivian was quick to defend the China players by claiming that some of the table-tennis players “have spent more than half their lives in Singapore.”

‘To deny them the right to call themselves Singaporean is very, very selfish. It’s very unsportsmanlike… They have made great sacrifices to be here,” he added.

However, a quick check on Wikipedia revealed that the trio who representated Singapore at the World Championships – Sun BeiBei, Wang Yuegu and Feng Tianwei obtained their Singapore citizenship only in the last five years with Feng obtaining hers in 2008 just before the Beijing Olympic games.

While Singapore should remain open to foreigners, Dr Vivian seems to forget that it is the duty of the elected government of the day to take care of the citizens first and NOT foreigners and immigrants.

Dr Vivian unveiled a mega $10-million Community Integration Fund last year to make the immigrants feel welcomed, accepted and happy in Singapore and yet when he was asked by a fellow PAP MP Dr Lily Neo to increase the monthly allowance for destitute Singaporeans on Public Assistance Scheme in 2007, he retorted:

“How much do you want? Do you want three meals in a hawker centre, food court or restaurant?”

Such callous comments coming from a multi-millionaire minister being paid for by Singapore taxpayers is not only small-minded, but very unfair and selfish as well.

    Mr. Balakrishnan

Does Singaporeans “small-minded”, “unfair” and “very, very selfish.” change the fact that these athletes are foreign born and bred and are here to make a living?

What has these athletes have to do with “the survival and prosperity of Singapore”? Two different subjects aren’t they?

Mr. Balakrishnan, you are making yourself very unpopular by insulting Singaporeans who are entitled to their quite or vocal opinions. Just remember that you will be asking Singaporeans for their vote very soon.

Vivian is very angry because he instinctively knows that this student from SIM probably is a regular reader of Temasek Review. He is lashing at you the readers and specifically wish to let you know that you are “small minded”, “unfair” and “very, very selfish”

The following quote extracted from this article shows what PAP truly believes in.

The PAP is reaffirming their commitment that they are going to replace all the useless citizens of Singapore with foreigners. They are also telling you that you are being con into serving National Service because you are born in this country. They won’t ask foreigners to sacrifice but still make you fools to give your utmost and blame you for not sharing the highfalutin concepts of PAP. Singapore does not belong to you lesser mortals, it belongs to the PAP.

Soon after the forth coming election, they will plan to remove the country of birth from your NRIC. You lesser mortals will not need to fill up your country of birth because it is really not necessary.

The country is filthy rich and could afford a mercenary army to fight for us consisting people of different countries so don’t think you are important at all to the PAP.

After all said, I reiterate that the forth coming election is a walk over where PAP will be your permanent governor hereafter on polling day. Since you don’t have citizenship, your voting is not needed anymore.

So these sports men and women made huge sacrifices to come here to give glory to Singapore? Let’s face it. They come here because their home country refused to support them. They come here for the chance of winning and gaining personal glory and cash (if they win). Do you call that “sacrifices”?

Our NS boys giving two years of their lives to NS are SACRIFICES. The NS boys’ families’s giving support to the NS boys both mentally and financially for another 2 years are SACRIFICES. The NS boys who have died in the course of training are huge SACRIFICES. Notice the difference, $M Minister?

Just becos singaporeans hold differing values regarding important sportsmen to help Singapore win a medal here or a medal there does not mean that Singaporeans are ’small-minded’.
Singaporeans are just more dignified;they rather prefer to win by their own efforts and what’s wrong with that?
Don’t this govt promote ‘meritocracy’ or it’s more like hypocrisy?
Do you casually see singaporean workers for instance, going around faking qualifications in order to win that job?
But,on the other hand, many are the FTs who get jobs with fake degrees and work resume.
By all means,go ahead and recruit sportsmen to win glory for you but please spare the citizens from your lame blaming.

The minister as usual has got it all wrong. Singaporeans are not saying don’t bring in foreigners. We are saying
    a. Bring in foreigners but have local born Singaporeans as your first focus. Not the other way round.
    b. Bring in those who can really stay and contribute. Not just use Singapore as a stepping stone to elsewhere.
    c. Manage the intake gradually to ensure assimilation and ensure they have common characteristics to smoothen the process of assimilation.
The logic that the PAP uses to justify its foreign talent policy is childish and inane. For example,
    a. If some foreigners are good than all foreigners are good.
    b. If some foreigners are good than more foreigners is even better.
    c. If you have any objections to the foreign talent policy, you are a traitor.
    d. If foreigners can help the country is some ways, then they can help save the nation and our future.
    e. We should welcome foreigners, because we are all initially of immigrant stock.
The minister is only reciting what his masters have told him to say. Does he really believe in it? What happened to the rebel image that he flaunted in the past? Has he sold his soul for a few pieces of silver? How on earth do they not feel the anger and frustration of the local born citizens at the foreign talent policies of the PAP? We will give the answer at the ballot box. This is one time when history won’t repeat itself!

You call upon Singaporeans “not to judge” so readily, yet you yourself are doing that very same thing of us, the very people who put you there in the first place, so at least even if you do not LISTEN to anything we say, we are still entitled to express our own opinions.

The PAP Ministers have always been afraid to reveal the amount of money that they spend to get the job done – not for the Town Councils, nor even to the late President Ong Teng Cheong who asked for the amounts that he need to watch.

How much has the PAP spent to get these FT Sports men and women to be Singaporeans ?

If this amount spent to compensate these FT will still require a huge sacrifice from them, has the amount been insufficient ?

When the PAP Government refused to spend any amount to support Singaporeans in dire straights during the 2004 to 2005 recession – that saw thousands being retrenched – it is thoughtless for Dr Vivian Balakrishnan to call Singaporeans “small minded” and “unfair”.

Is there any fairness on the part of the PAP when it spend near to nothing on the elderly Singaporeans – who had given the better part of their lives to build Singapore to what it is today ?

Dr Vivian Balakrishnan belong to the supposedly 3rd Generation leadership – who got into his position by the backdoor politics, and yet he has the cheek to treat Singaporeans with such disdain.

Arrogance is now personified in all the PAP statements and remarks.

It is clear that the PAP is now a Pro ALIEN Part and no longer a Party acting in the interest for Singaporean People.

Referring to VB, it is not what you say, but how you say it. In the case of VB he was flawed in both counts of how he said it and what he had said.
Referring to your opinion of “international credit,” Sinkapore also has the international reputation of being a tax heaven for the rich, and has the highest salary paid to politicians – I am sure these will also make you damned proud.
Third, referring to the ping-pong team, they are given massive amounts of monies for their success. Guess where the monies are coming from? Certainly not from VB’s pockets do they?
Fourth, do you seriously think that when the Sinkapore flag was flying at the medal award ceremony after the mercenary team won, tears of joy were flowing from their eyes with pride or that any tear was that of joy for expecting their million-dollar tax-free cash waiting when they fly back to Singapore?

We may not be as intelligent, but we know how intelligent minds think. Also, we start to understand how intelligent minds try to make us think how they want us to think.

What many are criticizing are the downright shortsighted and greedy policies of using money to virtually buy trophies and medals and patting ourselves on our backs for winning for Singapore when the fact remains that the team members are all, or almost all, newly-minted “Singaporeans”. • Sorry, sorry, did not read “FT sports policy”. Yes, very silly. How about rumours of ping-pong Jiawei “has signed on with the Beijing team”? Of course it is small-minded, selfish and unfair to mention our ping-pong SG citizen unless it is in a positive light.

“small-minded”, “unfair” and “very, very selfish.”?? That is brain-farting language Singaporeans will find hard to understand. It is not much coherent of comprehension than that fame public exclamation…”we will put food on the table” for the homeless without telling us where that fictional table is to be found for the homeless.

Ouch, did he meant it to be in some fine dining restaurant somewhere to prove he is “broad-minded”, “fair” and “very very generous” of sharing his multi-million dollar pay package with poor, homeless and hungry Singaporeans Lily Neo made an impassionate plea for?

I remember a young man voicing his mind about master race/elitism and answering his son’s inquisitive question on who and what is he in Singapore.Remember Viv we are Singaporean regardless of race, color or creed.

What happened to that young man????

Are these sports mercenaries worth their salt???or are they here for the money???for those that sink their roots here with families and loyalty I welcome them but what is the ratio??? are the money spent worth it and should there be glory is it a HOLLOW glory or a genuine one in the likes of Tan Howe Liang, Wong Peng Soon,C Kunalan and Fandi and many other tru blu Singaporeans or True Lions.

Why not spent the MILLIONS to cultivate our own and helping the disadvantage and poor, their NEEDS are greater than the HOLLOW victories. We don’t need these FALSE/HOLLOW GLORIES when we have our people struggling to seek a decent home, three meals(home cooked)not hawker, foodcourt or restaurant standard. That in essence is what we Singaporeans TRULY NEED.

Vivien, you are truly a disappointment.

Vivian is nothing more than a puppet whose strings are being pulled by you-know-who to lash out his propaganda. He is just a tool. And a tool needs to be useful so that its master will keep it. Why is it that we so frequently hear this man telling us to embrace the foreigners and not PM Lee?

Somebody got to do the dirty job, right?

Now you know the man behind the curtains pulling the string, are you still going to be swayed by his words ‘cos he carries a baby and gives a megawatt smile?

I most welcome a foreign talent to coach our local kids to win in sports.

But deliberately using a foreign talent to win sports in the name of Singapore is downright dishonorable, although clearly the big-minded scholar and doctor don’t think so.

    Dear Vivian Balakrishnan,

Since you have used the word “unsportsmanlike“, I would like to say that I have a very different view of sportsmanship from you. I would support locals, even if they lose, more than I will support these table tennis players, who must have chosen Singapore because Singapore gives them the best deal.

Please also urge the Elections office to conduct a free and fair, and “sportsmanlike” elections. That involves disclosing the election boundaries ASAP, and to give them the necessary media focus for Singaporeans to make the right decision.

    Singapore’s talent at integration

I REFER to Wednesday’s report, ‘Critics of foreign talent in sports get red card’.

Kudos to the Minister for Community Development, Youth and Sports, Mr Vivian Balakrishnan, for flashing the ‘red card’ at Singaporeans who deride foreign-born talent for bringing glory to Singapore in the sporting arena while donning Singapore colours. I agree that such Singaporeans are small-minded.

Singapore is one of the few countries that can pride itself as being able to integrate and immerse naturalised citizens into its society, thus giving them and born and bred Singaporeans a level playing field in accordance with the nation’s Constitution.

I see no reason why some Singaporeans should grumble about the status of naturalised Singapore citizens when their forefathers had also chosen to migrate to Singapore – a ‘land of milk and honey’, which it still is to this day.

    Lionel De Souza

I dont really cared if we will never win another medal; I would rather see the PAP uses the money to help the poor & sick!! Winning all these medals isnt gonna increase national pride, in fact, most of us feel ashamed. I guess it’s just the PAP’s ego that has been inflated here & to be honest, it’s a waste of taxpayers’ money.
