New opposition party founded by former WP leader Chia Ti Lik

Author: A new opposition party – the Socialist Front, is being set up by former Workers’ Party candidates Ng Teck Siong and Chia Ti Lik.
An application was filed last month with the Registry of Societies, the Straits Times reports. It is not revealed who the other applicants are.
Mr Ng stood as a candidate for the Workers’ Party in West Coast GRC during the 1997 elections while Mr Chia led a team in East Coast GRC in 2006.
A lawyer by training, Mr Chia was considered one of the rising stars in the Workers’ Party till he resigned abruptly a few months after the 2006 elections to protest against the party’s internet policy.
Mr Ng subsequently joined the Reform Party founded by the late opposition leader J.B. Jeyaretnam in 2008. He resigned from the party last year following a dispute with its other CEC members.
If approved, the Socialist Front will be the second opposition party formed this year after the United Singapore Democrats in April which consists chiefly of supporters of the Singapore Democratic Party.
The proliferation of new opposition parties in an already crowded political landscape is a sign of the perennial inability of the opposition to work together.
The higher number of opposition parties is likely to increase the likelihood of three-cornered fights in the coming election.
With the opposition wrecked repeatedly by petty squabbles and in-fighting, the PAP is likely to romp to another electoral victory again.

Oh not again another opposition party, the Singapore Opposition parties are so weak and fragile and disarray. Worse we have all the half baked, quarter baked or no baked at all plus those spent force elites including one who inherited his late dad’s party, and also emergence of a particular minority race like in the PAP where we already have x numbers of ministers plus president. The PAP government approved and sure approve more parties for oppositions as part of strategy to further weakens the Singapore Opposition…sad day for our Modern Singapore who does not need so many opposition parties. What she needs is a Singapore Anwar Ibrahim who has half of our young Lee Kuan Yew and Malaysia Anwar Ibrahim, to unite and lead them and he must be a local born Singapore Chinese. Let us pray that God delivers this person who is equal or better than the PAP elites and he must come from the Ordinary Singapore background and not elite.

I was just speaking to some of my Socialist colleagues, being a member of the Socialist Party UK, the other day and was bemoaning the absence of a Socialist alternative in singapore. Well well, as i said, i’m awaiting the manifesto. What singapore needs is an ‘umbrella’ party that ties together the interests of all with respect to sexual orientation, gender, race, nationality, etc. If this founds the basis upon which all other perspectives emerge, this party will definitely have my support.

Come to think about it, maybe this is also good to have newly formed opp parties to distract the ruling party, and comes GE all these opposition parties suddenly change course and merge into ONE BIG COMMON PARTY to trash the papies off in ONE BIG SWEEP once and for all. In Singapore we do have capable people who would like to join the opposition to fight the PAP. The problem is that once his family knows he wants to join opposition and not PAP, the wife would threaten to divorce him and children will leave him. They even threatened not wanting to use his surname anymore. This is too much a sacrifice for these able people who happened to be wealthy individual. So there is only one thing for them to do. Join the PAP and say to the rest of Singapore, “You Die, Your Business”. Only that he could have a happy family where his wife will call him honey and children acknowledge him as daddy.
What you really have left is only a bunch of weirdos and out of this world individuals who happen to do crazy things to harm opposition and scare away would be voters. I don’t really see what is so bad about this. If they disagree with their party’s stance, why shouldn’t they form their own party? Would you prefer infighting during the election? The voters will decide who they want.

While in NTUC, he ruled with his iron fists, no difference from the pap styled leadership.
TKL was asked to step down from NTUC to make way for new blood. So this sort of got him agitated and he went on the offensive.He went public to help lehman investors and then subsequently he wanted 10K signatures for him to stand for election.
This man although he is doing it for his personal reason, I would be happy for him to stand against the PAP in the next president election. We will see how the PAP will deal with a man who had turned a thorn but qualified to run. But maybe he should also run this election to see where he stand.

I have no vested interest in any political party.
In the first place, is there a need to have so many different opposition parties? It gives one the impression that they can’t get along with one another, Otherwise there is no need to form new political parties.
My obseravation is that there is not a slightest doubt that the ruling party will win the next GE hands down and probably with a landslide victory.
Their machinery is well oiled and waiting to be rolled out at the press of a button.

Analyst is most accurate and wise in calling a spade a spade. There is no way the result can be any different than this.
Have the PAP never revert the flow of foreign workers recently especially those from PRC, there may be widespread resentment. The supreme PAP has done a coup by going on hiatus in regard to the flow of foreign workers especially those PRC. Nonetheless the inflow of Malaysian is still streaming in to help the business roll.
However there are more disgruntled voters than before because of the new media abrasive comment that embolden a small group of people who dare to make a cross for the opposition on their voting slip to make a difference. This will hardly make a dent to the overall result of the general election unless if these people dare to risk and take the PAP head on by joining the opposition to contest. Of course if they really do that then it is inevitable that some of them will suffer a casualty but knowing people are only good in making noise as anonymous, they will prefer to defy their belief and stay by the sideline.
Once I go to a Chinese dinner seated among total strangers who are locals and speak on the prospect of who will win the next election, unanimously everyone say they will vote PAP. Hence the feeling of the ground is very supportive of our supreme PAP who will win irregardless of what they want to do to you. Take it that I am pouring cold water over your head and dampening your aspiration, the truth is the truth.

Look at JBJ and Tang Liang Hong, such strong candidates where more than 10,000 supporters surrounded and rally around them at Cheng San, you now already know the outcome. Today who is your new JBJ and where on earth is Tang Liang Hong who disappear without a trace.
In election it always about the candidates and not just simply sentiment. Beside Low Thia Kiang and his beautiful chairman Sylvia Lim, the rest of the candidates are either too old or too western. Can Reform Party’s Kenneth Jeyaretnam takes over his father place and win seats for his party? At his first salvo the public got the impression of a westerner being out of touch with the ground. Wining fifty percent of votes of a GRC is not as easy as ABC.

Two persons left the political stage for the desert are coming back – the grounds must be VERY SWEET now for a change of politics and a change of Government to bring about this. Creating disunity is too easily accomplished by planting PAP spies. Who cares about supposed in-fighting? This is prime opportunity for the opposition, the leaders just need to plant a candidate – any candidate – in EVERY single seat. If nothing else, it will indicate opposition support through the votes cast. The strategy should not be to win – but to gather feedback through actual votes cast and also to set the ground for the next election. Market research so to speak. If the opposition continues to be “selective”, they will get the same results with the same old strategy which has not worked in the past.

I get the feeling TR looks up much to Chia Ti Lik. First of all Chia was never the WP leader although he was one of the many leaders. When you say the leader, you mean someone like Low Thia Kiang. Second it seems clear to me that Ng Teck Siong hatched the idea but the title chooses to focus on Chia.

Please don’t tell me that among our local born Singaporean Chinese, we don’t or can’t find the very best among us, to lead us ie the majority and we need the third largest minority ie the Indian to lead us (we already seen in the PAP government that we, have these X numbers of Minsters, besides the President, and one writer wrote in reply to my posting, they have Chinese wives and I replied back, this is not a good reason, and are they so good-top gun or the la creame, and conversely we have started seeing the emergence of so called elites from third minority in the Opposition and this is again worrisome and one just inheirted his late dad’s party and let us ask ourselves ie is he equal or better than his late dad and my answer is no-and we have seen this in history (in Malaysia- the PM is the son of Malaysia’s second PM, and he has tainted background before he became PM and so is the Home Affairs Minister whose dad was the third PM and deputy minister of international trade Datuk Mukhriz, whose dad is former PM Dr Mahathir. Further, with so many X numbers of Indian Ministers in the PAP government, have they really went all out to help and upgrade the lives of their own race ie the Singaporean Indians-can anyone tell me.
Elites in the PAP governments have not lived up to the expectation of our Minister Mentor Lee Kuan Yew who himself said the former PM Goh was not his first choice and he prefered Dr Tony Tan who declined to be PM.

Since the PAP and their supporters are so sure winning,i think there is no harm for more singaporeans to put a number of Opposition into Parlaiment.Even long-time pro-PAP voters can simply vote OPPOSITION so that some of your grievances will also be aired by the Opposition on your behalf as you may be too afraid to offend your PAP MPs especially SME bosses as the PAP,with its FTAs only favour the MNCs and their own giant TLCs and GLCs.
So,it makes sense for all who wants to have their grievances heard,personal or business,to close one eye and VOTE OPPOSITION as there is nothing to lose.

Ng Teck siong(Socialist Front) said he is willing to work with any opposition parties,including RP as long as their political ideals are similar. He still is in close contact with several RP members.He said that the new party will not get into 3-cornered fights. Mansor Rahman(a former chairman of defunct party) is also a member of Socialist Front.

Emergence of opposition parties shows that the present govt is weak and useless. The ground is sweet for new political ideas. As long as there is no 3 cornered fights in which will favor the PAPs, it will be a vibrant and democratic GE coming.

According to Chinese newspaper, one of the committee is a veteran politician and unionist Mansor Rahman.
I think is good for Chia to have Mansor Rahman. He is very experience politican and unionist. I remembered he was sacked by the NTUC when he put-up a challenged to Ong Teng Cheong ( then union chief) to resigned from the labour movement. He said that not only Ong should resigned from the union but all the MPs and Ministers. In 1960s – 1980s he was a crowd puller at every elections rallies.
I hope to hear once again his fiery speeches at election rallies.
