Flash floods stain Singapore’s urban paradise reputation

ABC News, 18 July 2010

orchardfloodSingaporeans were salvaging cars, soaked belongings and damaged goods on Sunday after a third flash flood in two months submerged low-lying areas of the city-state.

Shops and houses along posh Orchard Road were again hit by floods on Saturday after heavy rain overwhelmed the drainage system of the wealthy metropolis, which is often lauded for its excellent urban management.

The flooding took place just before parliament was to debate the issue on Monday following public clamour for explanations for earlier floods, which are normally associated with neighbouring capitals like Manila and Jakarta.

PAP should sue ABC for using unapproved photos, just like how they handcuffed Wanbao’s reporter for taking pics.

All the properties affected in flood prone areas should be re-assessed to lower their valuation and to protect people from being conned into buying “flood prone” properties.

1st storey houses and shops should be well insured and hopefully the underground carparks can be redesigned.

Lucky Plaza and Liat Towers should also redesign their buildings to protect their basement shops owners.

Wonder what our million-dollar ministers and our PM who are responsible for this fiasco will say this time?

    Still learning what to do?
    Caught unprepared again?
Flooding is not the gahmen’s fault and cannot be helped?
Too expensive to widen a few drains when they have no problem spending millions for the YOG and for Temasek to lose billons of our money?

  • Ills of Flooding:

Soon, we see cheap second hand ‘Typhoon ABC cars’ on sale due to flooded cabins and engines. Also houses and condos in those areas. Imagine it rains in Singapore one day every two months of 100mm…you change furniture 6 times a year…clean your house, lose your shoes, fishes, crabs, and end up with a softer ground for your houses. When U soak your trees in water for an undue period…they drop as their roots ease from the ground…try pulling your potted plants that are wet and those that are dry…the wet ones are out in a jiffy! U cannot count trees will not fall on houses next.

Floods are very destructive. Better check the ‘back pressure’ caused by the marina barrage…thats a most probable root cause. Do your simulation…and the results should show by itself…dun wait for the next destruction. We used to have worse monsoon rains…and this typhoon is too far away…in Filippines, moving to Vietnam…if it had not reached Sarawak, Sabah, Malaysia, Thailand…never will it be Singapore. We are always taught to solve problems at their root…go for it. Nobody is without error…make it good if there had been. Otherwise, the foreigners who own houses in these prime districts will start to move soon. How many times will they change their Lambourgini? Ferrari? LVs?

The flooding issue has become so serious that the Singapore parliament is scheduled to address the problem when it convenes on Monday amid forecasts of more rain.

So, should we expect more “arrests” following Parliament? “Photographs of the floods in Singapore are Criminal Defamation to Singapore’s reputation!! All such photographs must be destroyed and Photographers imprisoned!”

  • We deserve it:

They will push the blame to acts of good or freak flood, no one will be accountability. Or PM will ask Low Thia Khiang in a harsh tone if he would agree to sack the minister and then Low will just keep mum.

Weather forecast: there will be heavy rain and flash flood on 9 august 2010. Be prepared. Stay at home and do not go out through the day. The flood will be a seriousest (most serious) one once in 50 years. About one third of the area of the country will be submerged in water.

Told you already. PAP would not dare to hold elections this year.
Too many bad news. One day Yacaob the Minister said it happens once in fifty years, then the second flooding blame on some rubbish chogging the outlet drains into Stamford Canal, now said these rubbish is not the main fault. Let us see what he would say the next flooding occurs. What an inept Minister of Works, he thinks he gets million dollar pay so easy. He is ruining Singapore’s carefully cultivated image by his big, big boss, who in return ruin us with his pet Marina Barrage.
