Young Singaporean seeking advice / assistance

It may seem pretty weird for someone to send you an email for advice ; But there are always Singaporeans out there, left out by the government. The government only cares about the rich and not the poor.

PH161_021I’m, is one of the poor ones that are being discriminated by the government. Nope, its not about taxes, not about GDP growth, not about the corruption. They started because of one small matter. I don’t even have the basic needs that everyone need : A house. If you don’t mind, take 3 mins or so to read my story.

It started when loansharkers starting splashing paint on my door. My father had owe loansharks thousands in debts, because of his gambling. It continued for months. For exactly 1 year to be specific.

My mother left me as a result of my father’s gambling and my father often went to Vietnam. On May 23 2009, a loanshark called my house and threaten to lock my door, smash my windows and burn my whole family down if my father don’t pay up. So I went to the void deck and informed by grandmother. When she knew about it, we immediately started packing our bags, to escape. We would be putting our lives at risk if we don’t pack our bags ; But we didn’t had any place to go. We went to our cousin’s house as it was an emergency.

A few days later, the loansharks really locked our door. It has been 1 year 61 days after we left our house. (BTW the “we” i was referring was my grandparents).

The first 3 months of my stay was a well warming one I say. But then, my grandparents will usually do the house chores. But then, my aunt and uncle became more lazy, my aunt refused to help my grandmothers with the chores and just sit right in front of the laptop all the day. And my uncle? Calculative and selfish.

We help them do the house chores, take care of their childrens, buy their dinners and yet they expect us to pay $100 as “rent”. Being just 12 years old this year, I feel helpless. I could not help my grandparents anyway.

As my grandparents bought 2 HDB houses in the past (1970s and 1980s), they could not buy a flat from HDB. My grandparents were rich in the past, they had at least hundreds of thousands of dollars from their lucrative clothes-making shop.

Where did the money went? To the house that we left. It was a resale flat. We paid a deposit of $70 odd-thousands. A pretty huge amount huh? Now that my parents are divorced, they now want to sell the flat. They don’t even want to give the $70 odd thousand that they paid as the downpayment to my grandparents. My grandparents put their life savings into the flat and its all down the drain because of my parents.

Now, we can’t buy a 2-room HDB flat which i can pay the downpayment if i work part-time. I started asking my grandfather to go to the HDB branch office to rent a rental flat instead. But then, he was turned away. They said he had owned and sold 2 direct-HDB flat already.

We can be classified as “homeless”. Taking PSLE this year and have no proper study table, no proper bed. Fighting with two tenants with the bathroom in the morning. My aunt once sarcastically said that,” The bathroom is so smelly, I wash clean already” in Chinese. In the first place, my grandmother was always cleaning the two toilets.

My grandparents and I don’t wish to live in this “living hell” anymore. We can’t even make ends meet because of my cousins, my grandparents’ daughter family. They splurge on coloured drinks and drink coloured water like running water.

When we eat out, my aunt and uncle expect my grandparents to be the one paying the bill. My aunt and uncle are both earning at least $5000/month combined and yet they expect my grandfather who earn less than $1600/month to pay for the bill.

Can Temasek Review help in anyway? This is the ugly side of the poor, homeless and discriminated Singaporeans.

Best wishes,

Shawn, 12, Telok Kurau Primary School

Well in Singapore’s law, children are obliged to support their parents. So Shawn’s relatives shouldn’t even be leeching on his grandparents money at all.

As for the HDB part… It’s nothing new. They’re known to be hella inflexible.

Yes, i believe this article story. Only when the tough and rough times comes in, then you will know that sometimes your worst enemy can be your actual own family members, really.

No joke. I say this is because i have one female friend suffers at the hand of her own family too. They play despicable and shameless act by making her homeless. Her own blood sister changed her name to be an occupant and her own sister put her own name as a sole owner when both of them applied a 4 room flat few years’ back ago.

Guess what happen? every month the installment payment is only 2OO dollars plus only, my female friend behind the back pays her sister half of it the amount (in cash), while the remaining half was cut through by her own sister cpf account, when the time is up, (not yet reach 5 years), her own blood sister teamed up with the rest of the family members chased my female girlfriend out of the house.

And when my female girlfriend went to HDB and check , realised that all along the while , her own sister has been so despically changed her name under occupant, though she did share that amount of installment money every month . And my female girlfriend was so devastated that her own sister can be so wicked and evil in her heart by conning her into buying flats together at a cheap rate, less that $150k for a four room flat.

She never expected that her own blood people will betray her for money’s and their own selfish benefit sake. And she trusted and believe her own sister and let her deal with all these HDB documents without asking during that times. Nevertheless when she found out, it was already too late. And best part is that whole family can twist and tell lies about my female friend in order to coverup their evil doings right in front of the public. They says things of her which is not true. And my female friend swore that she will never acknowledge them as her family people anymore..

Now she is staying outside on her own, but she says that even if life is hard for her , but at least she is so much happy without that bunch of people in her life. And she have no regret at all by disowning all of them. I can vouch for that, she is happy without them.

So folks, let me end with this: Sometimes friends is even better than their own family blood people. Many ppl can because of money and for their own selfish ambition, betray their very own one.

    Dear Shawn,

I m very sorry to hear what happened to you and your family. How I wish things would be better on your side. At your age, there is nothing much you can do. Of course, both your uncle and aunt are not doing anything to help.

Before I go on, have you lodge a police report on the red paint splashing incident? I would highly urge you to do that. Whether police would take action or not, that would be secondary. At least a report has been made for record purposes.

If you speak to your father over the phone, DO NOT REVEAL his location. Not to your aunt and uncles and MORE IMPORTANTLY not to your mother because she is not in good terms with your father and she would not protect him if Ah Lung were to visit her.

If your grandparents does not have a big mouth, then its okay to let them know so that they will feel a little relieve that their son is still in one piece. Now, how can you get out of this situation? Here are some options that you can try. No guarantee it would work.

    1. Talk to the welfare department and request or help. They have no excuse or whatsoever not to help you.

    2. Move out from your uncle and aunt. They are not helping you and your grandparnts. Locate a room, NOT AN APARTMENT. Just a room in any HDB flats that are a little far away from town. Lets hope it would be cheaper. I know its hard for your grandparents and you to go into a room, but no choice for now.

    3. Focus on your studies because you cannot let these situation gets in your way. If you are good, perhaps you can offer some tuition session. You can make some pocket money out of there.

    4. There are many NGOs in Singapore who are also out to help. Perhaps you can talk to them as well.

    5. Try to get a attorney who are less “money minded” to help your grandfather to pull his money out. Offer the attorney that if he can do it, he will get a certain % of the money.

    6. PRAY!!! You may think its not feasible but prayers will help. Tell God your problems and ask for his blessings. Doing that, someone may come to your rescue.

Thats my advice to you. I wish you best of luck and keep yourself safe. God be with you!!!

    Adrian

  • Hello Shawn, I believe you are too young to be taking on the burden of your entire family. At your age, you should be concentrating on studying and not working part time to save up for another HDB flat.

While I do understand that your grandparents are old, its allright if you are helping them mentally but you should seriously consider reflecting this incident to your MP or some Community Services so that they can better advise and help you.

It is good you wrote to TR for a start and do please contact TR with your contact numbers so that the experiences editors can refer you to the proper department in a position to help you.

  • @Skeptical, agreed. TR already made it very clear that the identity is NOT verified and is awaiting contact number from Shawn for verification.

Knowing TR, TR will NOT seek donations to help Shawn but merely refer her story to an agency thats capable of offering her assistance.

If there’s any reader willing to financially assist, then the most TR release her banking information with her permission so readers can donate DIRECTLY.

TR I agree should not get involved in fund raising directly unless there are compelling reason.

Dont you people realise that is how the PAPPIES worked in the same underhanded method too by verification. And because of ‘verification’, many people couldnt receive real time help. Dont get me wrong here, folks, i know we need to be prudent at times, but sometimes when we are overly cautious, then everything will be put to a full-stop. Havent you ppl read those great leaders stories> Those great leaders are those never try to doubt any stories that come along their path, they just want to help until they leave this world with a good name, remembered by many many generations. Our late President Ong is one of them. He will never doubt or reject any help need to be help.

Have you people being so brainwashed by the pappies systems to such an extend also behave like the pappies so paranoid on this , on that, blar blar blar…with so many red tapes involved…If a person can send such an article to TR, it already shows their devastation and their helplessness to find anyhelp already. Use some common sense, please, my fellow singaporeans. Have some heart!

Sometimes ,there is a need for a group of people to really standup and says : WE BELIEVE IT , AND WE ARE HERE TO HELP AND SUPPORT!

  • I think the issue here after reading closely is to get her and her grandparents ALTERNATIVE accomodation considering that her AUNT is the root of her unhappiness.

Donkey years ago maybe 200 bucks can get a room but now, I dunno, anyone?

Once she and her grandparents have moved out, with $1600 won’t die but just hard, easier than living under someone else’ roof.

To all Folks here in cyberspace : Those who really want to help, please step out and throw in some real hard cold cash donations to the person above as that poor kid is only 12 years old, and her grandparents are old already.

To rent a room, for nowadays market rate is at least $500 to $550 per month. So after deducting , how much will it left for these 3 persons based on $1600, please do the calculations ….

Wait. Hang on. The headline says “A Young Singaporean Girl Seeking Advice” & “her” name is Shawn? I’m not trying to be a smart alec here, but can someone please enlighten me to the fact that Shawn is indeed a boy’s name?

On the other hand, should this story be genuine, Shawn, you have my deepest sympathies. I, like many, would like to offer some form of assistance. However, I strongly feel you should first & foremost approach your grassroots leaders (MP for your constituency). I am more than confident they are able to do something about your plight. If that should fail (not surprising to many, I suppose), the next appropriate move would be to speak with your school teachers/principal. Remember to bring either of your grandparents along so as to avoid any unnecessary suspicion from your teachers/principal.

Last but not least, I would like to ask Shawn a personal question: how did you get to know or hear about Temasek Review? & more importantly, while finding a study table is already “mission impossible”, how on earth are you able to obtain internet access?

Whatever it is, my heart goes all out to people alike Shawn. Make your voices heard & society will see to it that you will receive some form of salvation (by society, I mean non-governmental charitable organisations, period).

    Dear Shawn,
I’m really sorry to know that you’re in a real poor situation and living in a place where everythings are so expensive and as long as you pay, pay, pay, you’ll be fine. Have faith and stay faithful, God Knows, and He is watching and believe me, He knows, who is good who is Bad or real Bad, & He knows when and what to do. So be strong and hold on to your hope. Pray&be patience, He knows when to do His works. Don’t give up on hope. 1st of all, I hope you can go to your teacher whoever you believe is caring and is willing enough to help&guide you to do well in your PSLE. You’ve to focus in the top priority task for you, you only, and that is your studies. The rest like roof above your head, I believe your Grand parents are working on it. Talk to your teacher or school teacher in charge of Counselling, I believe they (school teacher) will be able to come out with some ways for you and your Grand parent to get by.

Good point. Things were different in the 60s and early 70s in SIN when people would offer their assistance without no questions asked. I recalled a time when doors to the homes were left opened or unlocked and neighhours shared food/meals in times of need regardless of race, language, or religion. Things changed to bad from the mid-70s, the neighbourliness that I grew up with disappeared; in particular in the HDB blocks. The kampong spirit was gone. The issue is with the way the PAP govt runs the place. There is none of the compassion expected of a caring govt which took every opportunity to maximum its own revenues. Glad to leave the place.

Dear Shawn, my heart goes out to you aas you are so young. Please go to your MP and get a letter to go to the Legal Aid Bureau at Ang Siang Hill. It is behind and near to not far from the Maxwell Hawker Centre. Easy for me to say. But keep pressing on such PAP government politicians and agencies until you get result. Not easy but it will make you strong for your future and adult life. This world is not fair one. So remember that “Nothing great was ever achieved without extraordinary effort”! I will do my best to help when we have made contact through TR. Meantime will pray for you and may God bless you and bring your relatives to justice. Please take heart girl.

Dear TR please include me. Will email you when you’ve notify here that you’ve got Shawn’s contact. Thank you TR. Actions speak louder than words. Christ said put it another way of “Faith without deeds is dead”. Watch out all Christians and even non-Christians, as we all love to think of ourselves being good and best. And that is exactly why the human race is what it is mostly. Don’t get me wrong, but there are people who care most quietly. It is also written that “What you do with your one hand, don’t let your other hand know or what good you do becomes not good”. Of course sometimes we can’t “hide” due to such cases like Shawn’s

Silence with regard to wrong doing is also condoning it. As it is participation in violence by silence.

So, “This world suffers not because of the violence of bad people, but the silence of good people” – Napoleon

It’s why he wanted to conquer Russia because of the evil there!

    interesting.

a 12 year old can write an article like this? i seriously doubt so.

assuming it to be true, well, this kind of situation is common – nothing to do with society, the neighbours, singaporeans and the government.

wan to blame, blame the adults! the writer is not poor but unfortunate, not by default but from the parents who chose this path.

having said that, the writer can approach family service centres instead.

live on. life is not a bed of roses. some have it better, some have it worse. keep walking and you will find light at the end of the tunnel.

    Editor,

Many moons ago we had such thing as an aunt agony column to seek solutions for such social problems..With the advent of internet the good old grandma remedy is quite forgotten.

The matter of Shawn is a social problem.Throwing money is only a temporary measure. Why?Because any kid who is both motherless and fatherless is an immense struggle itself.Even with fistful of currency Shawn would still face many a problem.

Right now Shawn problem seems to be a HDB rental unit. But does it end there? Not really. What happens if Shawn grandma is called to be with the God?Shawn would be back to square one.

Now,Shawn still has a mother and a father.Legally or otherwise, they are still responsible for bringing a child to this world.A better solution is to make them accountable first.Than the question of Shawn guardianship and education need to be addressed…What I am simply saying here is……

That we ought to have a government funded organization to take such matters into their hand. But PAP is too preoccupied with feeding it’s ministers and cronies. So we are left to fend ourselves issues. So,just as much TR came about fired by the injustice of PAP to give the average Ah

Beng a voice.Perhaps TR can initiate or donate a column/space for such needy cases as Shawn. There are many concerned local and foreign readers who can indeed contribute for solutions in ways with their know how or expertise..For instance,a housing agent can show some loopholes on how Shawn can get cheap rental home.A lawyer can advise on legality.A retired teacher can help Shawn to pass her exams. And of course Shawn greatest need is for someone just to hold her hands when she is lost for an answer The list goes on.

Look,TR ..you have thousands of angry citizens who are neglected by PAP as your readers. They are here precisely because they are angry with PAP governance..What a better way to galvanize that anger into productive force by giving a charitable face to it.

Editor’s Note: Thank you for your suggestion. We will give it serious thoughts.

Here is the worry part, AH LUNG!!!

These Ah Lung has network all over the world. Even if you run to Cambodia or Vietnam, they still be able to trace you. They are THAT GOOD.

In some countries, Police are actually working hand in hand with Ah Lung (as some of the policeman are also in their payroll) Hence, how hard is it for them to track anyone down?

The issue of Ah Lung also need to be address. Someone has to be the mediator and negotiate to an extend that Ah Lung will also tone down their anger.

Perhaps the Micheal Chong of Singapore can come forward to help. That way, Shawn’s father would not have to worry and can come out from hiding and provided he stop his gambling habit.

Ah Lung only wants their money back, thats all. They are just businessman perhaps an unreasonable one. However, if you pay them off, they will be okay.

    Hi Shawn,

First of all, you write amazingly well for a twelve-year old.

I find some truth in what you say, in that the government neglects the middle class and focuses on mainly the 2 extremes: upper and lower classes. This is a major problem because unlike other nations, our population is made up of a grossly oversized middle class (>80%). Welfare and more attention paid to the middleclass is long overdue, and as the range of the middleclass is ever-expanding(i.e. middleclass buying pinnacles v.s. middleclass staying in 3 room flats), it becomes increasingly dangerous and unfair to label them and manage their affairs and situations in the same manner. For example, wages and incomes should only be use as a benchmark with caution. There are people making well over $5k per month but have a huge family to support with ill elderly carrying hefty medical expenses.

Having said that, your situation is very tough to intervene, governmental or otherwise, because it is within the family. There will be many questions asked. The best solution would be to approach your MP. He/She is supposed to solve tricky situations like yours and HDB and other related agencies may be inflexible, but they will do anything as long as a MP approves.

Typical since this kind of stuff affect any society. Don’t matter if it is real or not.

Firstly since this is more a human story then here is a my 2 cents

So this kid is down on his or her luck…judging by this letter it seems like he or she is a not very bright kid, most likely due to the family environment.

Mommy is a ho and daddy is a broke ass cheat. Only support is from grandma/grandpa…so sad.

Solution is have the police get the parents and arrest them for child abandonment. Then ask the father who the loan shark are and police then go take care of it….Since the Singapore pigs are good at catching loan sharks this should be easy. Maybe another one of those stories for ST. Then the pigs release parents and make sure daily visit to insure the child is taking care off. If the father is MIA then get the mom and make sure she care for the daughter.

Most likely she will be taking into government services and adopt by a better family.

worse comes to worse the grand ma kicks the bucket then she is left with the suck ass cuz family and is force to pimp her self to survive…………so sad if this hits rock bottom but we are not there yet.

    Shawn,

Write to me, I can help.

I know organizations who can put together something that can be sustainable. One time donations can’t do much.

I will also speak to your school and organize a fund-raising campaign for you!

    My email is [email protected]

Don’t get me wrong. But your opinions left your left very much to be desired for your intended help. As it was so superficial and info inadequate.

Please read your own post and reply too again. Like you now said I “curse” you as you claimed in your reply? Did I? So please read my response to you again too.

I know you mentioned “service centres”. BUT IT IS about old grandparents and a 12 yr old school girl whose broken family started even way before this age! This TR post whether hypothetical or not, teaches us all something about humanity and knowing how to access situations and offer advice. Let alone to help meaningfully! Even the quality of her plea has been questioned. E.G.; Is she a very intelligent girl? This was even put down by someone. Did someone write it for her? Or someone edited it for her. Trouble is that people like to GUESS and even 2nd guess!

Too many people just don’t know how a confused and distraught girl so young can feel. Without emotions swinging up and down. let alone expect her to study and concentrate in our “Mugging Education System” for “meritocracy”! Thing is time also NOT on her side. How many know how to help by giving leads with phones and names to contact for meaningful and “Heartfelt & Soulful” help? I mean we all have computers right. There Google too and gov.sg as well right! I’ve not given any such info ’cause I am waiting for TR to confirm as I’ve written.

Thanks for you support. But do give me some time to consider, Shawn is a unisex name so it could either be a girl or a boy. And I wrote this all by myself. I’m serious. But I’m keeping my head low. If I reply to you, I might end up on the headlines of the newspaper by “accident”. I’m thinking what to do now. But I really can managed for now. You can search my name, its Shawn Liew Hong Wei. Anyway, really thanks for everyone support.

    Best wishes,
    Shawn Liew Hong Wei

well, we can go to Malaysia or Indonesia and enjoy life there.
us and japan perhaps – incidentally their homeless and vagrants are proportionately or in absolute numbers much more than singapore.
    check it out.
    NOONE can eliminate poverty.
Communist China & the USSR tried.
    All failed.
Today capit alism is back in business.
Our so-called “poor” are nowhere compared to theirs.
    Again check it out.
You think the opposition can do a better job after collecting the MP’s allowance?
    don’t kid ourselves.
the outside world sings praises of singapore practically everyday . . . . they can’t imagine a resourceless, no economies of scale, tiny little 700 sq km island can make it thus far – already 45 good years relative to many, many, larger countries round the world.
LOVE YOU SINGAPORE – 45 GREATER YEARS. HAPPY NATIONAL DAY.
