SMRT Security caught napping again?

MRT commuters were stunned to see this woman with a supermarket trolley onboard. STOMPers who saw the woman are now wondering how she managed toget past SMRT staff at the gantry.

Snap2aShe did not care that the large trolley was inconveniencing others onboard.

STOMPer Malou says the woman even shouted and scolded fellow commuters and screamed when an SMRT staff told her to alight from the train.

Malou says: “This woman has a pushcart inside the MRT and she didn’t mind that she was hitting people with it.

“She started screaming when scolded about it and called other passengers stupid, even telling some of them to ‘go back to your own country’.

“When MRT staff asked her to alight, she started to scream again”.

Snap2Another STOMPer, Mrs Chua, says: “I saw this auntie with an NTUC trolley in the MRT.

“Is she doing shopping in the train?

“How did she manage to push the trolley into the train without any SMRT staff seeing her?”.

It appears that nothing much has changed since the last fiasco at Bedok Depot.

there are just insufficient MRT station staff compared to taipei, bangkok, hongkong. reason is simple – profits profits profits. so that CEO can take home 1.65 million. top very heavy, bottom stressed out and cut down front line staff. they tell u to multi-task – like LSS said cheaper, better and faster. so how many eyes and hands to look after one station?
so they need another graffiti right infront of her eyes then will someone’s head roll. otherwise they go after the poor stressed out duty staff of the station she got on the train. case closed.

The so-called security lapses come about not cos they are lax but rather employees are grossly underpaid and unmotivated.
This is the ripple effect and no amount of high gadgetry or security measures will work lah, as long as staff welfare in terms of money and other aspects of the job are unrewarding or neglected.

And they want us to ‘report’ if someone leaves a bag unattended!
This could be trial run by some ‘terrorist’ to see if we are alert!
Next time, this cart will be ‘loaded’ and nobody will give a damn!
No more MRT for me !

No eating, no drinking – now no supermarket shopping cart.

What about travellers going to Changi Airport by MRT ?

With suicide bombers happily going along with their baggage – as was seen in the video of the Jakarta Marriott Hotel bombing – is there anything to prevent someone from dragging us down in the MRT ?

It is too dangerous for the people in Singapore to take the MRT. Terrorist don’t even need to hide their bomb. They can just cart in their bomb in trolleys load. They will not be stopped. If people die, it is just too bad, cannot be help.

hide bomb on trains…kidding rite? There so many shops at MRT stations nowsaday one could easily be hidden in one of the shops. KNS no place for dustbins near train stations but plenty of space for retail shops

Its the Citizens that failed to keep watch, so don’t blame the ELITES, they already did a good job collecting the fees and raising them.

Are the SMRT’s Passenger Service Centre staff in dreamland? She would have used the lift to get to the platform.
It defeats the whole purpose of even getting Transcom officers to conduct patrols on the platform.
Yet commuters are told that the trains are not travelling at full passenger load capacity.
SMRT officials are just waiting for something big to explode on their faces.

Hmmm…. How safe is our MRT? How safe are the MRT tunnel retail shops? How come an NTUC shopping cart can get pass the gantry gates under the noses of the mrt staff?? How come the MRT which is a monopoly need to pay its CEO so many millions? Hmmm,,,

have u seen clarke quay mrt station? the staff is holed in one corner at the far end near Swisshotel Merchant Court while the entry gates from bus stop is near the Spore river end. so if u cart a whole trolley of TNT nobody will notice. how can the staff attend to commuter enquiries, two eyes at back on all the CCTVs and run to the platform if someone faints? employ more staff for heaven’s sake!! CEO take home three quarter million more than enough no need 1.65 million.
Just a few more talented foreigners to easily expose their security laxity before any lessons will be learned. Like they need so many people to jump onhto tracks before grudging spend $$ to build barrier gates. even then it is not till 2012? then they will complete?

  • 3rd class citizen:

Lee Kuan Yew said you cannot expect SMRh to be perfect. The lapse in security is due to a certain woman getting paid SGD1.65 mil a year so there must be budget cut somewhere which happens to be the security.

Perhaps SMRT should pay the woman SGD3 mil so that further security lapse could occur.

  • Always number 1 place:

If SMRT depot can be easily entered without anybody seeing it, a bomb can be planted under 1 of the trains. If this woman can enter with a big trolley, a man can enter with a bag filled with C-4 bombs. Whose fault, camera watcher’s fault for not being able to spot the bomber-man….That is why we are always number 1. number 1 for floods, graffitis, homeless, security lapses.

Our MRT hardware is very impressive. Cost billions of dollars. But soft ware and brains are lacking. This is esp true of signages. The worst signages are at the Outram Stn link between the NS line and EW line. There are so many signs, one blocking another. Total waste of money. At other stations, there are lack of signages. Strange management.

  • MRT should now stand for MATI RIDEN TRAINS cos a would be terrorist don’t have to hand or shoulder carry a small bomb into the train anymore, now they have a convenient new delivery system namely the STB (Supermarket Trolley Bomb – trolley easily available from NTUC – only S$1 for use) and best of all they can pack more bombs of different varieties with ball bearings, screws, nails and even lethal nerve gas into these STBs.

Anyway, Mr Shutmugam (Liew Tauk Yu’s best friend) already pointed out very clearly that security in the train depot, stations and trains are the sole responsibility of SMRT as the PAP would only provide an additional outer layer of security (WTF is he thinking). Why not provide just this outer layer protection for Changi Airport, Istana, the PAP ministers and their homes.

Yesterday at Jurong East station, there was a delay and the platform was packed with communters. There was no standing room at all on the platform and yet SMRT staff did not stop the escalators. People were still being brought up to the platform.

It was a very scary scene. Someone could be seriously hurt or a stempede could have happened.

Maybe SMRT should show the public recordings of yesterday morning from the security cameras at the platform.

    Ha ha ha!

OK, maybe because the trolley was transparent (grills mostly) and the shopping bags were all real supermarket stuff, she was let through. There really isn’t a clear rule about not allowing shopping trolleys. I think between a covered backpack unchecked and an all-exposed shopping trolley, the backpack would be more dangerous. And we know that bombs don’t really need a huge container to be transported. I do think this makcik is a little eccentric but maybe she is fed up with foreign workers doing things their way and so she was just doing something that many Singaporeans have been wishing they could do. I think she had had enough of foreigners not understanding her queries in supermarkets, buses…being knocked down by cyclist on PEDESTRIAN pathways… seing her young relatives not getting a flat when in Bedok South there are large 4-rm units from Blk 46 to 50 rented out to FW etc etc etc……

Personally this case only confirms my belief that the current security at the SMRT is very slack and inadequate. The statement from SMRT if any will probably say that their staff did not stop this lady because they thought it is a marketing effort by the YOG or something like that. If the head of security is not accountable, then no one is accountable.

What striker me here is not how ‘badly’ this woman behaved. In the midst of all these commotion, a single line from her seem to set all other screaming apart, i.e. she shouted to some to ‘go back to your own country’.

Before a volcanic eruption, there are always pre-eruption signs, and this is one of them. The govt can ignore and treat this as a siao-cha-boh creating trouble. But this siao-cha-boh is like to be one that go around sharing with everyone she knows on the state of the huge influx of many unnecessary import of FT’s, FW’s and FO’s.

Cut cost, zero manpower growth so that the bottomline can be fatten. This is not unusual given a culture of making money and more money. SMRT just can’t be bothered to employ more staff to look after the security of its premises and their train stations.Their attitude is, don’t worry it won’t happen to SMRT. Wait until one fine day when a major crisis strike,(lets hope it will never happen)and all the savings achieved through reduction in manpower will be wiped in a matter of seconds. We pray this will never happen. But it is about time SMRT beef up its security.
