Desmond Lim barred from meeting Potong Pasir residents

The ongoing internal conflict within the Singapore People’s Party took another abrupt turn lately when it was reported in the Chinese evening daily Lianhe Wanbao that beleaguered Assistant Secretary-General Desmond Lim Bak Chuan will be barred from meeting Potong Pasir residents.

The decision was apparently made by SPP Secretary-General and Potong Pasir MP Mr Chiam See Tong and sent to Mr Lim via a SMS by his wife Ms Lina Loh.

A visibly upset Mr Lim told the media:

“They have to accept the election result and cannot deny the contributions I have made over the last 14 years because they are unhappy with me. Even if they do not allow me to meet the residents, my contributions to the party are still witnessed by the public.”

Mr Lim was said to be at loggerheads with Ms Lina Loh over the joining of Reform Party into SDA and he was accused of bringing in 30 supporters to register as members at last Sunday’s party conference to ensure he gets elected into the CEC.

The fracas was given extensive coverage by the state media which is quick to capitalize on it to paint the opposition in a bad light by washing SPP’s “dirty linen” publicly for all to see.

The negative publicity is unlikely to help SPP’s cause in the next election where it may face an uphill task retaining Potong Pasir which was held by Mr Chiam for the last 25 years.

Mr Chiam had indicated his desire to lead a team in a GRC and his seat at Potong Pasir is likely to be contested by Ms Lina Loh.

For some strange reasons, the Straits Times published only one article on it while the Chinese papers have been harping on the saga non-stop for the last two days.

The SPP and Lina has no rights to bar Desmond Lim from meeting Potong Pasir residents.

Ask them to pull out any Constitutional Laws in the SPP. Potong Pasir is a public housing estate so he can visit the residents anytime he wants.

John Maccian, Chiam See Tong, Mr Lim is just too old, step aside I wonder if his health permit him to run for office. Let the new blood in, time to rejunvate the party for a new cause.

Closing I will qoute Mr Obama Barrck Hussien:”If it is not now, then when ??? tomorrow, another tomorrow ??? we must set a dateline, a goal, a plan in motion” (wow I suddenly sound like a Liberal, must be watching to much C-SPAN liao)

  • PAP and DAP same same:

Infighting is common in any political party.PAP itself is a good example. But because LKY destroyed all his competition ruthlessly -undemocratically…locals are brought up with an illusion that all is well within a part so long as none surfaces. The reality is PAP is a bigger candidate for far worse infighting once the lau lee dies.

The only difference is PAP is held by strongman and opposition parties by democratic process…Where strongman exists, like Mao,Tito or Stalin or even Saddam for example their ruthlessness of weeding opposition within their party gives us a false notion of party stability…we should not mistake it for ,pseudo-stability..Far from it-it actually hides a time bomb waiting to explode.Sort of releasing all that tension and pressure once the strongman dies.

Anyway,I see it as a healthy sign.Let the weak perish.Nature will take care of it anyway. If Chiam is SPP and SPP is Chiam than once Chiam is weak the party is good as gone with or without Lina or Desmond. And through this fight only good emerges. If Desmond can hold his ground than emerges a younger Desmond as future politician.Does it matter if he is with SPP or not?

I see the positive aspect of this.

Potong Pasir residents should that note of the following:

    a. Chiam See Tong is not unlike Lee Kuan Yew. He wants to pass the baton to his wife. After that to his children? LKY handed the baton to Lee Hsian Loong but had a safe seat-warmer in the PM position for a while.

    b. CST is no threat to the PAP. He actually lends the PAP some credibility.

    c. Was Lina Loh elected democratically?

    d. Did CST groom a leader to succeed him after so many years in opposition? Emphatic NO.

    e. CST has not been effective in opposition.

    f. He should recognize that he is old, in frail health and should leave politics with his wife who is also not far behind him age and health-wise.

CST and LL should not cling to the constituency seat to the detriment of his constituents. He was elected because they believe that he could represent their interests but now, it is obvious, he is not capable of doing so. He should go to his constituents and them so instead of trying to put his wife in his place. He should resign the seat and call for elections.

MR. & MRS. CHIAM – please do the right thing.

The SPP held a party conference on Sunday, 25 July 2010 to elect 14 members to its Central Executive Committee.
Every nomination process is a gruelling endeavour, one that tests the hearts and minds of the candidates.
The opposition candidates need to withstand intense scrutiny, withering attacks and unfair criticisms, especially from the main media controlled by the FamiLees. It isn’t easy, and those who enter the political arena as an opposition candidate deserves our support because these candidates who emerge victorious, while they may be imperfect have admirable grit and courage.
Successful candidates have to have a strong sense of self and purpose.
It is also important to bear in mind that to succeed long term in the political arena, candidates must represent more than their own narrow interests.

Look the whole problem started because of Kenneth Reform Party’s completely unreasonable and undemocratic demands.

I have personally seen and spoken with Mr Desmond Lim. I apprecate
his contribtions to help Mr Chiam. But Mr Lim should recognise the fact that Mr Chiam is getting on in age and therefore, the Party needs to bring in more dynamic leaders who can not only perform his duties to the constituents in Potong Pasir but also who can possess good oratorical skills. In this aspect, I felt Mr Desmond Lim will not impress. He will be good as helper but if he should stand for a seat as MP, I am 100% confident he stands no chance. Sorry, Desmond, that is my personal thought.

The reason why Chinese Newspapers are harping on SPP’s issues continuously is because the newspapers perceived CST has the “backing” of certain “animals” from the UK in his political career?

As ST is an English Newspaper formerly established and trained by the “English” it will be counter-poductive to “harass” CST as both belong to the same “master” under the guise of political competition!

Never forget, the British helped LKY and his cronies in “XXX” operation during the early 60s’ political tumult against BN-their major opponents! Without the help of the British it will be closed to impossible for LKY and his cronies to destroy BN totally and subsequencely acheived their political cum commercial hegemony in Singapore!

The proposed cooperation with RP is to keep SDA alive and CST’s legacy. It was never intended to be a clever election strategy. Patpong Pasir is very small and likely to join with Bisha/Da Payoh. CST is in poor health and unlikely to be a magnet for votes outside of PP precinct. The no. of votes in the PP precinct will not be enough to bring up the average. It is an exercise in futility. 2 scholars from RP will be sacrificed in the process.

It’s better to call off the proposed alliance.

We have often been quick to criticise the PAP government over some of their policies. Many have advocated that the PAP government should be voted out during the upcoming elections… My question is as follows:

Apart from the workers party, are they any other credible opposition parties available ready to take over from the PAP?

Looking at the series of infighting and politics going on, I think the answer is A FAT NO!! What kind of stupid crap is this? Infighting? Come on… Stop all these nonsense shit and wake up SPP if you want to win and contest in the next upcoming elections… Learn from the workers’ party and PAP…. I can’t imagine voting for a party like SPP….. Imagine them winning a GRC and/or a single ward… Instead of addressing to the citizen’s needs, who knows, they may spend their time trying to ‘FIX’ each other.. What a laughing stock this party is.. “big black dot”, if you read the conditions Kenneth J laid out over the RP-SDA “merger” you’ll agree with me that its more like a “takeover”.

For example, RP has the right to kick out any SDA candidates are not elected! But if RP candidates are not elected, no loss for them.

Seems more like Chiam is desperate and willing to give in to any of KJ’s unreasonable demands just so he can have his change in a GRC. That’s probably cause Chiam doesn’t have enough candidates to put together in a GRC.

Instead of looking at Desmond who has stuck with him all this while, he wants to pass power over to his wife (sounds like Lee family), and let KJ have his way.

He then tried to muzzle and suppress Chee(who is a fighter unlike Chiam). He then resign as SG of the SDP when he could not get his own dictitorial ways. He is so useless that after all these years he can’t even attract enough good candidates to contest a GRC that he has to run to a newbie(the Reform Party)to try to form an alliance. And as though that is not enough, after almost 35 years in politics, all he can offer is his housewife to substitute himself.
