SPP wrecked by infighting between Desmond Lim and Lina Ng

Even before the date of the next general election is announced, the Singapore People Party led by veteran opposition leader Mr Chiam See Tong is reportedly wrecked by intense infighting between Mr Chiam’s wife Lina Loh and his protege Desmond Lim.

The SPP held a party conference to elect 14 members to its Central Executive Committee last Sunday. According to media reports, Mr Lim tried to register 30 new members in order to ensure he has sufficient support to stay in the CEC.

Ms Loh had apparently brought in 9 supporters in a bid to oust Mr Lim from the CEC.

A fracas broke out between the two camps with supporters of Mr Lim taunting Ms Loh for being “too slow and old.” The two had been at loggerheads since May after a failed attempt by the Reform Party to join the Singapore Democratic Alliance.

As expected, the state media has given extensive coverage on SPP’s internal problems to cast doubts on its credibility and ability to challenge the PAP.

Many netizens have expressed their disappointment and frustration at the inability of the opposition to work together, even within the same party.

With the election looming ahead, it is unlikely that Singapore’s weak and fragmented opposition is able to make a dent on the PAP’s political hegemony.

Election will now be called sooner than later due to the infighting between opposition party members.

If this continues, Singapore can say bye bye to Oppo. This is a sad state for Singaporean. As a Opposition supporter, I am very disappointed with this event.

In politics, you just cannot believe everything that is shown in front of your eyes. There are always sabotage cases here and there, spies, slippers, KGB or whatever you call it from stronger parties are being planted into opp camps to destroy or discredit their operations. If you observed closely, you will understand why such thing happens only when election is approaching.

Chiam had to pay the price for PAP patronage..finally.

Sorry,I have to say this.I had always had a soft spot for Chiam as the little man fighting the monster in his Volkswagon…But that evaporated after his spat with Dr.Chee.

Look at the vast differences between these two figure Dr.Chee and Chiam….one is sacrificing his life and family for the sake of his love for his fellow citizens..Dr.Chee lar…and despite the mountain of obstacles Chee had built the most credible opposition party Singapore possibly could ever have. How?

Just look at their activists…Malays and Indians in particular…young and vibrant and ready to go to jail or die for their cause.

And look at Chiam ; a pathetic old man who needs his old wife or PAP and their prostitute press to defend him.

Now that Chiam has served his purpose beyond PAP needs —PAP wants him out in the most ignoble manner..the price he has to pay for keeping company with the devil…I am sad for him.

Had Chiam stayed with SDP he may have lost his constituency to PAP but his integrity would have been intact…like JBJ,beyond death.

The next on line ,I am afraid is Low Thia Kiang of WP…but he deserves whatever coming to him for putting a knife behind JBJ..

Sorry Chiam to see you end this way.

I know Desmond personally, he deserves to be SG of SPP.

As for Lina, I think she shouldn’t kick a big fuss. When her husband was MP of Potong Pasir, she wasn’t popular there at all and has done little to help out the residents there. You don’t see her at the MPS sessions.

She also doesn’t have the politician calibre. If she wants power, fine, but do it after the GE. Win a ward first by being a SPP normal member. Prove her worthiness to the people of Singapore before asking for big roles.

These people are in politics because they are politicians. As politician what they do best is politicking. Hence in fighting of this sort should not be such a big duel. The trouble starts with baby politician like Alex Tan bringing their dirty laundry to wash in the public.

Chaim’s overture to the RP with terms that water down the power of Desmond does not go well with the man, this is only natural. In response Desmond trying to fight for personal survival by bringing his own supporters is in response to mother nature.

The trouble is not Chaims and Desmond who are politicians and they will have to continue their fight to decide who will be in charge on the final day. Once things are settled they will be able to continue to chart their ship and set sail again. What happen here is because Alex Tan is going around to wash his party laundry in public to win for himself some self pity.

This is not a big issue and its an ongoing thing in every organization that want to make some real change. If members or bystanders just leave this as an internal matter and stop fueling it into a big thing, it is really nothing. If TR capitalizes on this matter to sensationalize it, they can gain readership at the expense of the opposition of PAP. The real losers are those who support the opposition cause of course.

I agree with you – as a native Singaporean, our primary objective is to prevent the current government from getting another term; after all the misguilded policies they have implemented over the last 5 years.

We must vote in opposition – there are many credible personnels in the various opposition parties – they will be able to steer Singapore out of the current mess. Once the opposition is in power, they will be able to attract a lot more members – built up their base.

We cannot be stuck in a “chicken and egg” environment forever – we must break this cycle – if we want a better Singapore for our children and grandchildren.

What? power struggle amongst the the SPP member? Stop it before the powerful PAP has an opportunity to smear your organisation. The opposition party of SPP in the eye of the public is already weak and fragile and will lead to further damage in your reputation. How can you co-ordinate amongst yourselves with this struggle to challenge the Mighty PAP? It is such a disgrace. Remember, unity is strength that can only able to challenge the PAP.

In any case, this small disagreement demonstrates DEMOCRACY in play, unkike the PAP’s camp, where everyhting and all things are more or less DICTATED!

TRUE DEMOCRACY comesabout when diffrent people with different sts of values and thinking come to agree with each other on core issues rather than harbouring grudgingly their concrens in their own minds and hearts and merely toeing the line at the expmense of overall good.

the opposition members will by and by sort out their differences and stand for the overall good of their respective parties and the acuse of meaningful OPPOSITION here for the general good of all true blue Singaporeans, that i am sure.

It is pathetic that Chiam should have his SPP deteriorate into a fracas, it clearly showed that the SDP members was right to have given him “a vote of no confidence” in 1993. [See Ref 1 below]

Clearly, the SPP cadre corp that is allowed to vote, should similarly give him a vote of no confidence.

What vision do Chiam or his wife have for the future of politics in Singapore, or are their persistence to be in politics only for the sake of the job as Members of Parliament and the remunerations that come with the job ?

If politicians have no vision of what Singapore should be, it is best that they remain at home instead of disrupting the political process by distracting the focus of Singaporeans to building a stronger and better future.

I will say this for Desmond.

By leading the fight to oppose the takeover of SDA by Ang Moh Party, he did S’poreans a gd turn

I had a gd impression of KJ based on RP’s manifesto. As I told Men-in-blue friend, “True you guys been saying these things but have you put in down in one doc”. He conceded WP hadn’t.

KJ’s reaction to SPP rejection showed me I was wrong to be impressed. KJ has the faults of his dad: petulance big ego, petty minded. PAP would have destroyed him in GE.

What we have to see if he has daddy’s courage.

What I found strange is why Chiam was prepared to give away everything to someone who had yet to prove himself to anyone.

Hopefully SPP can get act together.

Finally I agree with you SIG without anything to add or subject. In trying to be balance, we must also use some of the old crook’s ways and harsh harsh what is harmful to our cause. We are all human. And so to Lina, Desmond, CST and all in TR, let’s then remember that:

    1. “All truths are not to be told”.

    2. “All thing are difficult before they are easy”.

    3. “At the round table there’s no dispute of place”.

    4. “All things come to those who wait”.

    5. “All promises are either broken or kept”.

    6. “All keys are not hung at one man’s girdle”.

    7. “All weapons of cannot arm fear”.

    8. “At the end of the game you will know who is the winner”.

I sincerely hope that the SPP Exco Committee members are reading this website.

Well, that shows that they have opinions of their own. That shows even within the same party, there is no kowtow business, which is healthy.
Sure, they can come together and see the bigger picture of getting into power together first then resort into a similar fracas. But would that give us confidence? How long would they last?

Imagine them getting into power even with these internal struggles…then what we will get is different opinions and voices within the same government. What we will witness will be different aspirations. What we will witness will be voices without the fear of crossing party lines, embracing freedom of speech.. never mind hurting many personal egos and pride.

Perhaps then, we will start to see maturity in this so-called democracy.

The decision to accept RP into SDA rests with the component parties, not just SPP. DL can keep his position in SPP even if someone else who is better takes over as SG of SDA. SPP cadres should be clear about this point.

Come on man Alex Tan, stop all this associating and infiltration business. The public at large is more interested in your capability as a person to take on the mantle to be a responsible MP.

Your inability to shine through as a leader would mean that once you become a MP, you could easily be manipulated by your town councilor who would then short changed you unabridged. Consequently the constituency that elected you will be set back for five long years paying a heavy price for your incompetency.

As a MP wannabe, you start calling others “monkey” doesn’t set a great image for yourself. Only people who are restricted by their own inadequacy to communicate effectively need to resort to demeaning expression to showcase their own existence. The things you said could undermine your future pursuits so think carefully before you speak should you wish to seek public office.

Anyway beside laying out your grouses what can you show as a potential MP. Nothing absolutely nothing. Are you able to resolve issues? No, you cannot do a thing to turn around the situation regarding your membership as a cadre in the party. Such a minor issue yet you cannot resolve how can you solve bigger issue in municipality. Hey do you need me to teach you what to do? You can pick up the phone and ask Desmond out for a meeting and convince him that having you as a member is an asset to him and the party. Sell yourself for crying out loud.

You can’t even advice yourself yet you want to advice Chiam. Beware Chaim put you in his pocket and shake. When you are out of that pocket, you will spin and see stars.

really, at the end the day, those who can “communicate effectively” still need another group of people to do the more difficult dirty work of enforcing the message if it is not taken seriously. else, why do we need the police, soldiers, etc, etc, etc.

what makes you think that behind the scene, this “demeaning expression to showcase their own existence” is not done even among one’s own group, perhaps hidden from wider public consumption.

  • Ah Boy:

The SPP held a party conference on Sunday, 25 July 2010 to elect 14 members to its Central Executive Committee.
Every nomination process is a grueling endeavour, one that tests the hearts and minds of the candidates.
The opposition candidates need to withstand intense scrutiny, withering attacks and unfair criticisms, especially from the main media controlled by the FamiLees. It isn’t easy, and those who enter the political arena as an opposition candidate deserves our support because these candidates who emerge victorious, while they may be imperfect have admirable grit and courage.
Successful candidates have to have a strong sense of self and purpose.
It is also important to bear in mind that to succeed long term in the political arena, candidates must represent more than their own narrow interests.

Alex Tan must learn that by being vocal is not a short cut to Parliament Dr. Chee is an example on how you may end up.

Be more like LTK the silent achiever moving around wakes and be in sync with the people to be accepted.

Be VOCAL when you are in parliament not before or you will be considered an “Empty Vessel” and fade or discard like most wannabees.Singaporeans may be fearful,”ignorant” but definitely not IDIOTS.After all we produced one of the most textbook graduates in Asia by ratio if I am not mistaken.

Remember all the PAP MPs are only vocal when in parliament but bias in their comments or IDIOTIC like LSS and their entry is through the back door or courtesy of the PAP war chest.

Desmond Lim has been groomed to take over. Now suddenly old man wants to hand over to wife, sure he not happy.

If old man really want to hand over to wife, he must get Desmond Lim out of the party first. He never removes him and want wife to take over, sure fight what.

    Conclusion, old man’s fault.

    Thanks Alex.

Be sure to keep some aces in your pocket and the trick is to survive. I’m not so into politics and craps, (i hate greedy politicians and crony’s )but exco members that are not bought and invited,(selectively) should have some independent minds, otherwise they would have failed in their quest, as future leaders.
Decision has to be made to settle on middle ground if needed, but the nation’s interest comes “FIRST”.

    Take care and cheers !!!

In order to continue its-contemptible DOM’s hegemony in political power and commercial domination of this little-black-mark, this bunch of contemptible wrenches are capable of doing any sorts of despicable tricks to nail-down and destroy their opponents!

These method makes what PAP today. Silence at all cost.

Look at Kwa Chong, the kids are more vocal nowadays. Even a teacher try to steal give whatever bullshit, kids don’t buy over all this craps like those older generations that always keep the pain to themselves. If you cannot handle the heat in politics, get out of these field.

Alex represent a new generation who dare to speaks and fearless.

Alex go for it! To become better, Singapore needs people to stand up to these bastard tyrants including the worst of all PAP. You’re the one. With a few more years of experience moving up against these idiots, you’ll be ready to kick PAP out. Go for it!

The silent achievers achieved their goals to stay and fight another day the vocal choir fades, what we need in the new generation are thinkers ,doers and achievers to overcome the incumbent with fifty years of experience and a War Chest that oppositions dreams of.

Follow the silent achievers to gain entry into Parliament and be vocal when you have arrived and be certain not to be kicked out the next time round VOCALLY TALKING COCKS.

Actually this is a ploy from SPP to distract PAP. SPP is secretly forming a team to takeover a GRC in the next election!!

  • Opposition Party?:

We have often been quick to criticise the PAP government over some of their policies. Many have advocated that the PAP government should be voted out during the upcoming elections… My question is as follows:

Apart from the workers party, are they any other credible opposition parties available ready to take over from the PAP?

Looking at the series of infighting and politics going on, I think the answer is A FAT NO!! What kind of stupid crap is this? Infighting? Come on… Stop all these nonsense shit and wake up SPP if you want to win and contest in the next upcoming elections… Learn from the workers’ party and PAP…. I can’t imagine voting for a party like SPP….. Imagine them winning a GRC and/or a single ward… Instead of addressing to the citizen’s needs, who knows, they may spend their time trying to ‘FIX’ each other.. What a laughing stock this party is.. Crap..

To Opposition Party?: July 29, 2010 at 6:01 am.

You have your views and other have theirs. If you are truly wise, give good advice and discuss possible scenarios like some thoughtful ones do. Don’t say things that will destroy the opposition esp. when you know Ge is near! Are like that cab driver someone shared about who complain all the way about PAP and said opposition not smart then vote PAP stupidly. As not even have cow sense to spoil the vote. These are the kinds that erroneously aid to perpetuate PAP’s grip by LKY whom he literally hates! Not very smart right! Or is he?

Reason is, have you ever been to SPP and just mingle with keen ears, eyes and mind to assess SPP and each exco member’s substance? So, you and other like minded as you are ONLY at best guessing or SPECULATING right or not? Desire for this isn’t enough at all. Notice I said “keen” ears, eyes AND mind? Knowledge with understanding and wisdom are essential for these things and our long term survival WITHOUT Immoral & Unethical means that LKY and his present team are now using for the last 25+ years! CitizenReddot
and zne immediately after him are wise in their comments. So is SIG now.

In poker games, a smart player can pretend to be lost and very nervy to hook wink other players. But such ploys played too often dilutes its effectiveness when they get figured out. So how to keep winning without being seen as real or not? Hope this is noteworthy for you. As, forever reading, learning but never knowing and understanding is the way of fools. The wise become even wiser from learning.

I think all this ranking in public about opposition parties is a political ploy – I hope that our opposition parties will not fall into this trap – stay out of trouble – plan for the next GE – stay alive so that you can field as many candidates as it is possible. Many Singaporeans have awakened – we will vote for you – you will win. Just forcus on Singaporeans’ Bread and Butter issues – there are many!

  • There responsible and they also better fix that mess they made with Bank of America for yourself. There could be what’s called the New Uniform Credit debt – Managment Services Act. Simply what has happened for your requirements has happened to several other many people and worse. You can record them into the Federal Trade Commission to begin an investigation. If they find they committed any wrong the FTC will take on care of it to suit your needs. Towards the record following time you would like to transform the terms of your agreement with anybody make convinced in order to do it in writing and send it certified mail. They’re able to generally say they never spoke for you. You may most definitely require them to court but test the FTC initially.
