Why it’s time for Lee Kuan Yew to retire

OPINION

There are some who think things will get worse if MM goes, and eventually when he is no longer there. Then, there will be no one to crack the whip.

canstock2026620One can be sure, despite all his Act of God claims, he’s kicking ass over the floods. and the rising prices of public housing. According to reports, Yaacob sat behind him looking like a whipped puppy when he made the cryptic statement that ” not enough had been done” on the flood issue.

One certainly wonders if there will be anyone to come up with the ambitious ideas that LKY had/has. And if they do, is there anyone serious enough and tough enough to realise them.

Things like the cleaning up of kallang river, and the building of marina barrage, whether or not it works, could never be carried out by a “namby pamby” lot now.

He has caused the problems now and is also part of the problem. He has stamped out potential leaders, in all areas; insisted on total
obedience and promoted materialism.

If he had retired, he could have been there to really advice those who took charge, instead of having to go in to bat for them. It’s ridiculous that these guys are hiding behind him and being so dependent on an 86-yr-old man. But their poor calibre is the result of his policies.

There is also no one (brave enough) to rein him in, like his old colleagues would have done in the early days. They would have shot down this latest mad plan to have an intellectual class, and talked him out of allowing so many foreigners into the country in such a short time.

He’s had an intellectual class all along. It’s not working. This lot go by the rules and the numbers, completely forgetting they’ are not dealing with robots. The social aspects of things are not factored in. And they dont know what to do when things dont work out. Their minds are not flexible and he wants still more of such crap?!

One can foresee bigger problems — Indonesia will cut back on gas sales. There IS going to be a screw-up on water. How much does it cost to produce now next to Mahathir’s 40 cents dd? Has anyone even asked? Were there re-negotiations after Mahathir left? One Johor contract ends in 2012. It does not look it will be renewed.

And how do you build homes underground in the future if there is already not enough space for drains now? And for sure all his little new citizens are not gonna just accept things like (us) the scared sheep do now….in 10 yrs time. They’ll be screaming about having more foreigners. Why is nothing being done about using our many islands — for homes, to grow food? They could have food factories e.g highrise vegetable, rice growing units, on them.

Basically, some could even say he’s been a damned bad parent. He has not let his child go and learn on its own, make its own mistakes. One can sometimes feel quite sorry for him. MM, that is.

For sure, he’s disappointed with how things are turning out, but no one dares tell him it’s his fault, and being a stubborn egoist, he’s not going admit it. Not even to himself!

For all that he has achieved and done..and to be fair..he has achieved a lot… some might also believe ,despite his years, he still hasn’t learnt……….

Lee Kuan Yew may not realize it but by trying to hold on to power, he is slowly but surely destroying what could have been a great legacy. If only he knew how and when to let go. I do not not know of any time in the last 40 years in which so many have wished him gone. The political beast, the PAP that he fathered has lost it’s way and I fear dark days ahead for us Singaporeans if they continue to hold on unchallenged in parliament.

yeah its true, in my army days the stg ask who is the president of s’pore? some recuirt said it is Lee Kuan Yew (it was Mr Ong)
then sgt ask who is the president of s’pore? some recuirt said again it is Lee Kuan Yew (it was Mr Goh) Today, CNA still show that crying moment of LKY annonuce our seperation with Malaysia. Singapore only had 1 leader, this is so unhealthy if he passed away, the FDI all will run away liao. Singapore don’t have anymore capable leader left

Our striat times qoute of the week, MM Lee said You ask me to stop working all of a sudden i think i’d just shrivel up face tne wall and that’s that. Wow…so when is MM Lee going to donate 1/2 of his wealth to charity organization??? He must do better than Bill Gates, at least donate 60% of his wealth to unfortuante Singaporean
Did you noticed The Striat Times suddenly become “very friendly” to american news, very very very strange hor. Must have hidden agenda liao

Is there so much at stake that MM LKY cannot learn to let go ?

What possibly could the stakes be ?

Is it entirely about Singapore’s future, or that of his own finite future and even legacy ?

The longer he insist on the dominance of the Pro Alien Party over all Singapore, and insist in the monopoly of all the superior talent and intelligence – it can only result in the polarization of minds in a modern Singapore Society that is open, educated and connected to the global grid of knowledge and experiences.

Can he and his team be more superior that the sum total of intelligence and talent from all other Singaporeans that he hope to dominate ?

Switzerland is a case in point when despite its landlocked position and with scarcity of resources and limited manpower, is able to sustain its living standards and economic performance despite the global economic upheavals.

It is able to sustain its continued success as the Swiss Government does not assume that their mandate allow them to dominate and decide on all issues that affect the Swiss population.

In all their political history, the Swiss has no need for any Senior Minister or Minister Mentor, as no single Swiss individual had assumed themselve to be better than another Swiss.

Can the self-acclaimed Singapore political elite learn another lesson from the Swiss, or are they simply too old and arrogant to learn anything any more ?

all you dafts out there do u know the real definition of retirement ? is defined as when u have save or have enough money to see through your last days without worrying at all.
Most ppl work till they die because they cannot stop because they have no money for three meals at home
The elites rich , ministers by definition have retired long ago they are working because of greed for more money and some as hobby to keep them healthy.
Poor ppl work till they die to pay for food ,medical fee and a roof over their head.

  • Better not to talk about him, the old fart, aged 87-years old. He is a lawyer and has the title of MM in his high office. He is well versed with the legal laws and uses it sue, fine, arrest and imprisonment for defamation. He is very addicted of doing it. Past history had shown that those who opposed him had their future destroy by him. Some would sue into bankruptcy, some ran away to other countries to escape the punishment, and some locked up inside the prison cell. I learned that one political opposition member was locked by ISD for about 35 years in prison without court trial. He is a doctor by training and his bright future was already destroyed. What a waste in his talented. At the end of the day, he was released from the prison due to his old age. Those who did this thing to him is very wicked and evil. No heart at all from them.

How could he retire when he blatantly said that if Singapore is in trouble he will “RISE” from the coffin when lowered into his grave and put Singapore right.

Singapore is currently in deep shit in spite of all the “HYPE” so how could he RETIRE???

Simply put, he will work till his body stiffens in office and there is no two ways about it and can I blame him with the current LOT of leaders, a Zorro the Clown prince in cabinet, a commercial HR man running Homeland security where a limping man can make his escape,a MOE minister commenting floods of this nature happens once every fifty years and after due diligence, return to say that its due to Heavy rainfall causing such flood need more??? figure it out yourselves and you don’t need to be a rocket scientists to come out with the ANSWERS.

  • Why retire when there are many outstanding issues yet to be sorted out like the widening of the income gap between the rich and the poor?

I questioned the rationale and the bases in the handing out of GST rebates by the government in my letter to the media, letter published in ST and BT on 8 June 2010 under “Income and wealth checked for GST” and “GST credits given based on both income and place of residence” respectively.

It is clear that the method of ‘HDB vs private property criteria’ used by the Govt is not equitable. It is too simplistic.

Easily some 100,000 persons staying in HDB flats are ‘rich’ and should be paid only $100 in GST rebates and not $200.

The saving at $100 per person for 100,000 people will mean a total saving of $10m, which is not a small amount.

This S$10m could be used by the government to give it to the really poor either in more GST rebates or for helping them in paying their S&CC charges.

This is the anomaly that I hope the Govt will reconsider and address.

A few days ago it was heartening for us to note that the Finance Minister, Mr Shanmugaratnam said that “the government has to question existing policies, re-mould entire social contracts and prepare the ground for a new era of growth” and in order to achieve this, governments need to be an “activist” state like Singapore.

There is hope and light from the end of the tunnel. I hope it is a super train heading in.

I hope the government will not take too long in reviewing their methods of giving handouts to Singaporeans and not treat some of the Singaporeans as super poor when it is not really the case.

When corrections are due, I hope the government has the political will to stand up and address it head on.

Before MM retires or steps down from the Cabinet, I hope he will drive on this issue to correct the anomaly without delay.

Has anyone noticed how disturbingly similar the MM Lee is starting to resemble Marcos and Suharto? Both had a golden period where they contributed significantly to the development of their countries. Eventually however corruption and nepotism set in and they destroyed their countries. The recent failures of the past year seem to be a harbinger of even more serious problems that are going to affect Singapore.

A slight but important correction. Acton said: ‘Power TENDS TO corrupt. Absolute power corrupts absolutely.’

The distinction is important because all societies must assign power to some people, or else it would be nigh impossible to run. We must however never again do what we did in the first 45 years, i.e. we must not give any group absolute power again.

  • For those who thinks that MM Lee should retire, let me tell you a story, believe it or not up to you but I won’t elaborate further.

REMEMBER President Ong? He tried to get the Auditor General of Sinkapore to release the ENTIRE Balance Sheet for Sinkapore but was stopped by ONE man.

The truth is that even the Auditor General of Sinkapore has NO IDEA as to the total assets of Sinkapore even if he had wanted to present it to President Ong.

Take GIC for example, with the exception of the select few in the famiLEE ONLY, not a SINGLE person in GIC has seen the ENTIRE BALANCE SHEET for GIC.

Not ANY Finance Millister, not ANY Auditor General and not ANY President has EVER seen the Complete Balance Sheet for GIC.

    Smart readers, go wonder why?

    * I am not an accountant, so my idea of balance sheet means the ENTIRE statement in FULL.

He is not going for money. 3 mil a year is very worth to get his contributions.

He is like the pilar of building. The pilar doesn’t have to do anything because it’s pilar. But if without it, the building will collapsed.

He is like a guard everybody scares. That makes everybody have to think twice to be a corrupt.

The price to pay is just 3 mil a year ! Not a month.

tan kok tim: August 1, 2010 at 9:10 pm

    Dear Mr. Tan Kok Tim

I hope you realized that MM Lee Kuan Yew is the direct cause of all our present predicaments.

In November, 1990 he appointed Goh Chok Tong as the PM. GCT reminded PM until 2004 when he passed the baton to Lee Hsien Loong. GCT only warmed the seat. In the meantime, the old guards were silently and systematically removed. In 2004 when LHL became PM, he increased the salaries of the Ministers as well as those in the civil service. The income gap between the rich the poor immediately widened.

Many top executives on the sidelines took advantage and in tandem increased their remunerations. Keppel’s Choo Chiau Beng now gets almost S$ 1 Million a month. Capital Land’s CEO, Liew Mun Leong is not far behind. They forgot that they are employees and are now earning more than the risks-taking shareholders.

LHL is a clueless PM. LKY had to come out twice, first to chastise Mah Bow Tan (over the high HDB flat prices) and then Yacob Ibrahim (over the flooding) in their presence. It is time LKY retires and LHL hands the baton to someone capable.

The GST rebate is a miniscule issue. The bigger issues are the presence of excessive numbers of foreign workers, Singaporeans unemployed, Singaporeans earning less, high cost of living, high public housing (HDB) prices, Singaporeans migrating, low rate of procreation, etc.

Finance Minister, Mr Shanmugaratnam is right. “The government has to question existing policies, re-mould entire social contracts and prepare the ground for a new era of growth”. He is one of the very few thinkers left in the cabinet.

Mr. Tan, perhaps you could share with us your compelling reasons why LKY should stay to clear the mess the Government has created. Do you think with age LKY has not infirmed? I certainly hope that you, Mr. Tan Kok Tim can enlighten us.

Otherise, we will say Kok Tim talks cock.

Today China is doing very well even without both, Mao Zedong and Deng Xiaoping.
So, its no sweat for MM Lee to leave politics completly, and to stay at home.
By judging from his last election results, Singaporeans know that the PM is very weak and useless. He cannot measured up to market expectation or to world standard.
Thus causing a lot of trouble for Singaporeans in the eyes of foreigners….”see no up.”

I can only think of 1 reason, He cannot let go of power because once he is an ordinary man, he may end up in court or being investigated for many things.

Look at Taiwan ex-president Chen Shui Bian.
He was arrested not long after he lost the election, and 8 years, only 8 years of dirt and corruption land him in hot soup.

All those years while he is in power, he appoints his own Judge, DPP, Police and Army Chief, all Yes man and equally corrupt individual covering each other’s ass.

When he is gone, shit hits the fan and all the can of worms surface.
This is only 8 years in power.

You are very correct sir. Why would he not go? He has lots of money already. He can go on the lecture circuits and make some more money. He is not exactly useful to Singapore at this juncture. His presence or absence will not rock the Singapore boat.

The longer he stays the more disgusted the people becomes with him. The Straits Times of today, 2 August reported that “Singaporeans want great say, latest poll show”.

    This latest poll is nonsense.

    a. You do not need a poll to know that people are disgusted with the PAP Government.

    b. You do not need a poll to show that people no longer welcome the PAP.

    c. You do not need a poll to tell us that the people want Lee Kuan Yew to step down.

    d. You do not need a poll to show that people want more opposition in Parliament.

    e. AND YOU DO NOT NEED A POLL TO TELL US THAT PEOPLE ARE DISGUSTED WITH THE HIGH MINISTERIAL SALARIES.

Are the people running The Straits Times stupid? Or is this a Government agenda to soften the grounds for the next election?

This Government of Lee Hsien Loong is no longer credible.

  • Penalised:

The system of GST allocations is greatly flawed. There are many people who are single, earn a moderate income, who can’t buy new flats and hence are at the mercy of the resale hdb market. Many of these people resort to renting rooms in hdb flats. Many rent rooms in private homes too, and for that are penalised because the farkpees deemed them rich, even though the residences they live in do not belong to them.
But why should the farkpees care? They take from you $10 in gst and then expect you to be grateful when they give $1 crumbs back to you, while they reward themselves with obscene millions and still give themselves obscene increments yearly.

    Fark them, vote them out.

  • MM Lee retired as PM in 1990.

And that was 20 years ago.

So in fact he retired at age 67.

wat about M.M as President , is that possible…as in a former P.M to be a President. Or why not he be an advisor for U.N . Am sure his wisdom will be of great use in there

What do you get when the devil is the ruler?

Which is most people are experiencing now.

I think many Sporeans simply want MM to retire and enjoy his millions. Let his son govern the country, thats what Loong is paid for, instead of giving him two overpaid nannies to make decisions and mess up everything.
Who is responsible for making Singapore into a rojak “Multipore”? Everybody knows who makes the real decisions in Singapore.

Lee Kuan Yew is nothing more than a WW2 traitor, then turned shrewd politician. His accomplishments, achievements and contributions to Singapore are highly overrated. Those who praise him incessantly are nothing more than brainwashed and deluded fools.

Learn to read history with a critical and dispassionate eye, instead of unquestioningly sucking in all that you are fed in National Education, the local mainstream media and those memoirs.

LKY is the founder, builder, guardian and savior of both PAP and Singapore.

99 % of Singaporeans regconised it.

If u don’t agree, u might probably be in the 1 % ppl group.

When he was a Chief Minister of Sg during 1960, Tuanku Abdul Rahman scared of him and kicked him and Sg out of Malaysia.

So, without him without Sg. I read it from library books.

  • for all the rights and wrongs, its well over due for him to retire, he can’t be here forever, so its time to let go and let whoever at the top to run our drop dead, how long can he go on…….

if we can’t rule or run this tiny island w/o him, then its just another 10 to 20 yrs before we turn upside down under current crops of leaders, rather turn upside down now than later, by which time we may need import FT to run this tiny island for us, maybe IMF

if he feels lonely nothing do, can do charity work hanging out his saving to the needy, his children are well capable of taking care of him, he dun need those millions, same to our SM

both hv contributed enuf, its time to let go and enjoy ur retirement b4 leaving this tiny island

bottom line is… the puppet master has to go.

he has already outlived his contribution. What he contributed is already wiped out by his own doing. I do not have respect for this old man, i wont cursed him or hope he die first but hope he live longer and see what sort of damage he has been doing to the citizens of singapore!

What is her physical condition today?

Will MM Lee understand this well enough?

Is he convinced by what is happening and understand the underlying causes?

He already provide another proof that he is still around ONLY for himself as he said, “he will shrivel up and face the wall”!

This guy whom Tracy Tan most wisely said of him somewhere else in TR that “he is afraid even to think of it” – meaning death! Simply put he has no inkling at all about life, let alone anything beyond. As he can only see material as wealth! Even an agnostic at least contend that God can only be seen through materials things. This had said that he he doesn’t even believe that either the Quran or the Bible has the last word about! So pray for him as he is so far gone is pointless and so futile! Still wanna figure him out guys?

People hate him an atheist so much because:

    1. Singaporeans DON’T KNOW that: “Away goes the devil when he finds the door is shut against him”.

    2. “An atheist is one point from the devil”.

    3. As “An old dog will learn no new tricks”. And “an old dog bites sore” too.

    4. “A hero is nothing but a product of his time”.

    5. He is “a saint abroad and a devil at home”.

    6. He does no know that “Adversity makes a man wise, not rich”. And also “a pennyweight of law is worth a pound of law”.

Have been so brainwashed by him that you’ve become like him and tell kids story like in i plating hide and seek? How did you arrive at 99% and 1%?

And it WAS Lim Ywe Hock who was chief minister and before he became Singapore’s PM in 1959 at age 37 hor. Get you facts right or you’ll keep muddling up and be stuck in the sand like an ostrich and his head. Then you who revere him become the very “daft” ones he said of ALL Singaporeans as he DIDN’T qualify which Singaporean group/groups! He velly smart hor. And you love him oso too hor!

To AnT, Prover 6 2nd part should read A pennyweight of Love is worth a pound of law”.

To PL, it should be “Lim Yew Hock who was a chief minister”.

And do you know y philosophy is not taught in lower and secondary level here.

Do you get to read books contrary to what you have read. R they allowed here. Be more balanced. The more something is being prevented from you knowing, the more you have to be doubtful on y it is so.

    How old r u kid.

my point is which CM made Abdul Rahman felt worried about Singapore and threw Sg out of Malaysia.

It was LKY. That’s why he founded Sg. And Sg prospers in a speed like space shuttle going up the outer space under LKY.

And I believe soon Sg will overtake Swiss.

LKY will be gone soon whereas Singapore will be around for a long time. I wonder it is wise to let him continue to be in this supreme leader position as he has long over his peak.
On the china issue, he put all our bets solely on the USA and making us the anti-china leader in Asean. ..
