YOG: What the HELL is that?

After reading so many about the Youth Olympics Games (YOG) and the importance that was repeatedly highlighted by PM Lee Hsien Loong and our Minister Vivian Balakrishnan and Teo Ser Luck, I would really like to ask readers:

WHAT THE HELL IS YOG ABOUT?

I would like to share my viewpoints on what I had seen over the past few days to confirm my doubts that the YOG would be a failure:

(a) Facebook Page of ‘I Hate YOG’

Whilst Facebook is never the best medium to gauge the success of any events, the fact that there are many contributions and reasoning as to why its members joined the FB page speaks volume of their hatred for this event.

(b) Non-attendance of YOG’s Ambassador

Where is Michael Phelps? Period.

(c) Poor Ticket Sales (Or is it Good Ticket Sales?)

Amist contradictory news reports, one thing is confirmed: The sales of tickets are mostly poor.

Look no further than the closure of the gallery section of Jalan Besar Stadium for the football event to be certain of this fact.

It just proves the level of interest that many have over ‘budding talents’. The sales is in stark contrast of a game between the Singapore XI and a 2nd Division team in Burnley – in which the Gallery was filled up.

(d) Volunteers of the YOG

I was walking along CitiLink Mall over the National Day weekend and what caught my eyes were the YOG personnel decked in the purple colour  Crocodile logo-ed Polo-Tees. Amazingly, the volunteers were mostly foreigners and many were stunned when I posed questions to them.

A conversation with one of the volunteers who comes from Beijing, now studying in a Polytechnic in Singapore, reveals the following:

Me (Pretending to be a tourist): Hi, you are volunteer for YOG? Can you tell me where is the venue for fencing?

James (Got his name when talking to him): I am sorry, I do not know where is fencing held.

Me: But you are an official for YOG right? I thought you should know?

James: Erm… Actually, I do not know the things of YOG well. I only know that YOG is from 8 August to 25 August 2010.

Me: You mean YOG started already? But my tickets wrote 14 August 2010? Did they start earlier?

James: Yes. I think so.

I subsequently identified myself as a Singaporean who follows the YOG
for all its ‘flaws’ and ’screw-ups’ and that is when James told me that actually he was forced to volunteer and he had no interest in this event – rather playing Starcraft II on his PC.

He and his friend also added that many of them were made to do manual work and at the bark and command of ’seniors’, who ‘relax one corner’ and bark instructions at the students.

Thus, if we have volunteers who are unhappy, then the question that bugs us is: How can a bunch of unhappy people make the event a success?

I urge the YOG Committee to wake up from their ‘Inception’ and get people who are willing to be part of the YOG. What use is there if there are people who are just merely joining in for the sake of some CCA points?

We busted about $400 million to host this event, in which we knew we would never recoup back the money. Is it money well spent? How are we going to justify the spending of such magnitude?

One word to sum up my feeling of YOG: DISGUST!

Fernando Fonseca

    Taken from: http://uberawesomedinosaur.blogspot.com/2010/08/communist-much.html

I received a letter from my school informing me that, as a secondary two student, I was required to welcome the YOG flame with the school by the cheering it on as it ran past Woodlands Mart. I groaned as the teacher emphasized on the word ‘mandatory’, and when she stated that if I were to absent myself with no appropriate reason, I would be sent to detentio. The day after, via an online forum, I learnt that not only in my school, but students from other secondary schools around Singapore were forced to cheer on the YOG flame at certain designated points.

This begs a question – what kind of democratic country are we, if our students are forced to display FALSE support?

Ignorant volunteers are not disastrous, even coax workers can be of use. During the formation years of Singapore, people are not enthusiastic in anything and least of all voluntarism but yet they get by. Most people those days volunteer only for a plate of rice to fill their stomach. Yet they have made Singapore ever so successful.

Youths are our country resources for such work. If they cannot be utilize to do such work, never mind, the government can always employ more people to standby. The government need not use money from their MIW, they simply use tax payer’s money. In the end we all die when the government chalk up debts and owe an incredible sum to the world bank. Hence I still recommend we use volunteers even if they are apathetic.

The YOG is successful though the degree is not as tremendous as the government want it to be. In the end we the people who foot the bill of the event suffers. The job of the government is to bring such event to Singapore, it is the job of the people of Singapore to make it a success. No foreign country will ever say the government of Singapore is not interested in watching the event, they would only think that the people of Singapore is too square and not able to appreciate sporting events.

Hi, I will like all to stop the reheotic of demonising the YOG here.

As I said, we already spend so much of our hard earned money on this event- let’s rally to make it a success. Failure will do us no good interms of economic growth, property prices or image. Please look long term. Let’s all pray for good weather.

Come on, after all these are kids. Why do you want to bully them? Help them nurture. The food given to the volunteer is reasonable – it is not dog food ok? If not, what type of food do you want? And first is this really the food given? There is no proof isn’t it? And I believe the organiser will improve on it if they know.

And anyway, I said again – a picture speaks a thousand words. Those TV footages are real people, real happenings.

Your efforts in demonising the YOG will do harm to Singapore in the long run.

I hope more people will come in to join me to celebrate SINGAPORE YOG!

I am not surprised there are so many bashings and displeasure on YOG as people linked it to PAP. Yes, most Singaporeans are apathetic and do not show real support to YOG, because they cannot find reasons to do so, be it national pride, financial benefits etc. People are frustrated to be forced to do things they are unwilling to, this is against basic human rights. Yes, students would rather play warcraft in their PC at home than ‘volunteer’ for YOG – this is their preferred choice, there is no right or wrong to anything. It is the organizer’s job to find out why people are so cold to YOG and do the necessary things to correct the situation by making people relly want to participate willingly. People should stop blaming others for not giving support.
Personally, I think there is better way to spend the taxpayers money on other things rather than to organize the YOG. I suspect most Singaporeans feel the same way. But sad to say, what most people feel does not matter to the people in charge. I think that is why so many people hope the YOG will fail just to make their feelings heard. More importantly, it should be big lesson to learn for all Singaporeans, including the PAP. If PAP does not learned from this mistake, and continues to inappropriately channel valuable taxmoney to things that most Singaporeans do not agree to, I urge all Singaporeans to remember this incident in the general election voting booth. For the sake of Singapore’s future, I do not want the status quo, as the way current things go, the growth of Singapore will only benefit of section and not majority of Singaporeans.

Quite truth that the organisers seem to do quite a bad job in marketing YOG to the world and worse when stirring up the crowds or singapore’s spirit in this event. But since the event is in our country, it is our responsible as singaporean to make it well. Not for the sake for the govt or PAP but for our country. That is true singapore spirit.

I believe that YOG should be a success. As a Singaporean, I am disappointed that Singaporeans are criticizing this inaugural event. You can complain all you want, but those who are criticizing should reflect upon themselves that if PAP did not do all these to promote Singapore, can Singapore survive in this competitive world? Please, can we show some support to YOG? This is an OLYMPIC event! Singapore is hosting it! I am sure there are volunteers who are willing to participate in this event. Stop using the word ‘force’! I am sure that those students who said that they are being forced should reflect and think if they have contribute to Singapore in any other way?

The whole world is watching Singapore! If we are having an indifference attitude towards the YOG, we will be laughed at by the other countries!

The event has not even started yet! So reserve your comments after the YOG! I am sure the benefit will exceed the cost of holding the YOG.

Yeah, so now those hard-earned wealth and prosperity of Singapore becomes “ours” by a magic wand that made you a Singaporean. For this privilege, you will debase yourself and say thank you to PAP for making it possible. So what gives you that right to tell locals what they should do? High property prices of HDB apartments only benefit a few, but in the long term the younger generation will pay the price when setting up a new home. Economic growth does not equate to better pay nor quality of life in Singapore. So your pleas will fall on deaf ears of local Singaporeans. The NDP parade to celebrate Singapore’s birthday is akin to a regimented nation resembling those of North Korea and China. Does that not give you an idea that this nation city state is almost a communist dressed up like a democracy?

Most locals who has made it owns properties overseas and send their kids to study abroad. Only a handful of thesekids return but many prefers not to. Every year about 1000 families migrate to countries of their choice. Many more have enough funds to run road in the event of catastrophe and are quite prepared. Many others are yearning to earn enough to have that choice of staying or leaving. So New Singaporean, good luck to you and you should pray more for your future than praying for good weather for YOG.

Do you think YOG if done successfully will benefit the whole of singapore?? Olympics, be it the actual one or the youth version, are the most wasteful sporting event ever created in human history, with World Cup coming in as close 2nds.

These events do not, i repeat, do not benefit the host nation, instead money spent will never be recovered. Stadiums that are built are left as white elephants.

such obscene amount of money can be better spent on improving the lives of singaporean then wasted to host events that are of no use to the citizens!!!!

What we have got here is a whole load of massive overspending and busting of the budgeted amount for the YOG. Singapore can organize all the YOG, Olympic, World cup etc. The key issues here is that while the ordinary citizens are gripping with over the roof property prices, competing jobs with the massive influx of 3rd grade FTs who are willing to take back a lower pay, and seeing how the government has no qualms of rewarding these FTs with easy PR and citizenship…..What is left of the true blue Singaporeans? To rub salt in the wound, they started this YOG thingy and can say loud loud they spend almost 400 million to host it! This money could had been better spent to help the needy Singaporeans. Why had the original budget been busted? Where did it went? Who is accountable?

Come on dude, get real! Singapore image boosted coz of this Youth Olympic? I m living in Indonesia, Malaysia and Thailand all these while and seriously the main stream media here dosent care a hoot about our YOG! One volunteer’s food is insufficient to prove that all volunteers are getting lousy food.

And this is disheartening. Singaporeans boycotting the first ever YOG that is held in Singapore.

And I don’t think anyone here will dare to stand up and speak out in person, and will probably still do his/her work after complaining down here. Wanna show your face and start ranting about how bad YOG is? Like you would ever dare. Hiding behind your computer and complaining is a cowardly behaviour, and utterly disgusting.

And I do think the Louis guy (or girl) has a point there. It’s our nation afterall. And there are many out there who are looking forward to the games like I am :D

If there is freedom of speech without fear of persecution, i am sure many people will stand up and demand to be heard.

    Quote from our leader…

“But we either believe in democracy or we not. If we do, then, we must say categorically, without qualification, that no restraint from the any democratic processes, other than by the ordinary law of the land, should be allowed… If you believe in democracy, you must believe in it unconditionally. If you believe that men should be free, then, they should have the right of free association, of free speech, of free publication. Then, no law should permit those democratic processes to be set at nought.”
    - Lee Kuan Yew as an opposition leader, April 27, 1955

I have no doubt that if the authorities so wished, they can track any number of ppl posting here. A wise govt will listen to what ppl are unhappy about rather then silencing those that dare speak up, even anonymously.

    http://www.straitstimes.com/BreakingNews/Singapore/Story/STIStory_565367.html MORE TRAINS FOR YOG!!
it infuriates me that during peak hours commuters have to have their faces squelched on train doors or missed a couple of trains before being able to board or be nearly pushed down Jurong East platform yet YOG – miraculously all excuses are gone and they can add extra trains and increase frequencies.
    I hate this double standards!!!!

    ———

This is so crappy lor! SMRT is willing to bend their rules for 3rd world foreigners but not do it for the residents, who are squeezed like sardines daily on trains.

My guy friend, who stays at Jurong, told me he often sees pervert guys rubbing their disgusting d**** against women’s butts on overcrowded trains!

    @ImLuckierthanYou

Scram, you pro-establishment running dog. Stop equating the anonymity over the Internet and the refusal to go public as cowardice.

You’re like those pro-PAP who say you can’t comment or have an opinion on politics unless you go contest in an election. I’m sure journalists and academics will tell you that you’re crazy.

    The facts are plainly these:

    1) The YOG budget has swelled to an astronomical amount, and no one’s accountable.

    2) Most Singaporeans do not care about the YOG.

    3) The YOG is a non-event for most parts of the world.

    4) NSFs, students and civil servants have been exploited and inconvenienced to garner ’support’ for the whole YOG circus and pony show.

    5) The YOG ads and decorations are getting overboard and tiresome.

    6) The volunteers were given crappy food.

    7) The YOG has tarnished what’s left of Singapore’s reputation and ‘branding’ with lackluster sporting facilities, the joke of a JJ Lin cheer, and really poor CG videos of the mascots.

    —–

In short, the YOG is an EPIC FAIL. No, make that THE EPIC FAIL of 2010. Apple’s Iphone 4 antenna flaw, BP oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico and all the floodings combined can’t beat YOG’s sorry, whimpering pile of mess.

VB and TSL are two DUMB ASS ministers ever recruited by PAP. Either PAP talent spotting has gone to the dogs, also their planning and execution is at a level that is very poor and has become a national embarrassment. This is really very bad image for the government and with all these floods as recent as two days ago, what the hell is wrong with GOV? Has the whole GOV machinery broken down and an overhaul is needed soon?

    @angry_one

I certainly do not agree with the “lets move on” attitude, especially with regards to Mas Selamat issue and etc. But what I meant is support for a sport event should not be dampen by political agenda, even though sports and politics are closely related.

I support sports simply I love sports, and I understand how athletes feel when in the heat of the race. I believe I can support YOG without supporting PAP.

And oh yes, I am utterly disgusted by the over budget of $400million, I am also a taxpayer too. Thats is why I would want to hear from PAP to clarify on this matter. But common sense would tell us that since YOG is still under way, the full cost can only calculated at the end of it. But whether the gahmen choose to step-out and clarify is another whole issue.

And yes I disagree with all the forced “volunteering” our JC students being put throught, not to mentioned NSFs. But too bad what to do? Can only wait for GE to exercise our power..

    @Braveheart

I have to say this, in my previous post I did not subscribe to the idea of “lets move on” attitude. I want an explanation from how our $400million was squandered.

YOG and PAP is two different thing, it only depends on how you look at it.

If you still wish to label me as a “bloody coward” or “idiot”, im pretty cool with it. I just wish come next GE Aljunied will go over to the WP.

    @ImLuckierThanYou

For the food matter, if it is prepared by SFI, I can vouch that the food is going to be edible, but definitely not tasty. Im a guy, completed my NS some years back. But well what you want? 3 meals a day of cookhouse food, food court or restaurant? =P

Cut to the point. If you decide to support the games due to any political reasons, personal preferences or just simply feeling happy for Singapore, good for you. But if you choose not to support, good for you too.

If not, we appreciate you guys silence. As a matter of fact, the bangla help me to shift house had been provided with much better food by me after he done with his work compared to what the volunteers is providd for by YOG.

I feel so SINGAPOREAN having to complain here like a typical complain ah soh , but i feel the need to share my views on this YOG.

Im a student, not involved in YOG( thankfully?) but my younger sibling apparently is. She is selected by theschool through CCA randomly to be involved in a performing section for the opening ceremony on 14 august. Training starting before June holidays starts and she became super busy. Every training day she comes home at 11pm odd and the next day she has to attend school and we all know school starts at 720am. Homeworks hardly done , skipping lessons there and then . FINE , usual.

She comes home often hungry , Why? No meals provided? No, In fact meals were provided but in insufficient quantities can be left to feed on Breads or muffins. Certain days were there second round of meal allowed.

Rehearsal after rehearsal , practice after practice. Curious about what my sibling is actually doing, we were finallygiven FREE tickets to last preview of the YOG opening ceremony not long ago.
    Before: EXCITED EXCITED….
    AFTER: what….*vulgarities

First flaw: They ( whoever) made us cross the double helix bridge ON PURPOSE into the marina platform. EH my parents not young, raining day moever, Can’t spare us a thought? The helix bridge not exactly very short alright. ‘well-planned’ indeed.

Reason being Sibling performance area light got problem ( mind my singlish) cant see no shit. Many screws up e.g. Dragon head out of control which was VERY dangerous. It was powered by MOTOR and has flames blowing through the nose. Worst still, it went charging into a crowd of young performers.
    Scare many audiences.

    Safety – Doubted.

    Additionally , a dont-know-exactly-what-bridge collasping on performers.

Alright FINE ,its a rehearsal , well practice makes perfect you may say, but with the real Opening Ceremony coming up in less than 4 day (as for now: less than a day) such flaws still can be seen?! WHAT ON EARTH ARE THE INTENSE REAHEARSALS AFTER REHEARSALS AND TRAININGS FOR? my sibling is not the only one suffering, yah duh CCA POINTS WHAT?!
With Singaporeans typically leaving the marina platform before preview ended i got really fed up and leave to see human traffic because apparently YOG personnels blocked some exits and chase the crowd from one exit to another up and down as if we were sheeps. CANNOT MAKE UP MIND? COMMITEE SCREWED? maybe? DID IT ON PURPOSE CAUSE IT IS JUST A REHEARSAL . who knows?

I am not done yet. Apparently the YOG commitee felt that day’s performances were pretty much screwed and SUMMONED all ‘units’ back into Marina platform for a second round of REHEARSAL ( again)and mt sibling went straight after school till it ended at 9 , close to 10pm , homeworks leh? Odviously undone. Tired, worn out, last thing a person wants to do is study.

COMEON FELLOW SINGAPOREAN HUMANS GIVE EM A BREAK . not even 24h to rest? NOT AT ALL? Oh my goodness , i went really pissed after receiving the text that my sibling will be home late again that day.
No second round of food ( AGAIN) nice one -.-

Fellow ah sohs complaining no goodie bags on the preview day because apparently organising commitee have to save 27000 odd goodie bags for those priviledge enough to be present on the actual day( BUY TICKETS?). Host :’ wave you mini singapore flags’ HUH where is the flag? no flag? no goodie bag? zero participation . OH its just a rehearsal -.- yet again.

My point might be scattered around but basically i just wish to emphasize the whole in general i shoud say, organising commitee sucks lar. thi is where taxpayer’s money goes to? A ‘dis-organising’ commitee.

    YOG-World Class Production?

Omg…… i’m from a Tertiary institute and i’m totally disgruntled already god, they make primary and secondary school students go through that kinda treatment!?

GOD!? Those governing the event tortures those whom they should protect for the sake of everyone else!

What’s happened had happened i can only hope that everything goes well on the actual performance so that the efforts of the little ones don’t go to waste.

I detest those comments that say, “since the money is spent, let’s support the event”. Where is the responsibility to it?

For example, your son went to steal a bar of chocolate from a supermart and do you say, “since you already stole it, let’s not waste and finish the chocolate.”

When things go the wrong way, we shld stand out and correct the guilty. Punishments could be meted out if possible. Embracing the mistake will lead to more mistakes.

We must let the govt know that $387 million on YOG is not justifiable. And we citizens do not like what is going on!

Yesterday, our cars was not allowed to move at traffic junction when light turned green, only to wait & wait until a YOG bus make right turn from opposite direction, after it passed our side traffic light turned red again, & a long queue behind. Privilege is definitely not spirit of sport, these people are really overdo, it shows that our Govt got Inferiority Complex & make us citizens like fools.
It is the organizer who make we people hate YOG.

You know, there are actually thousands of us who wake up at 5am in the morning to make the effort to go down to the village or whereever they are assigned to to make this YOG work right. This isn’t just about you or the PAP or your personal vendetta about the PAP, this is also about the thousands of atheletes who have come down to Singapore to live their dreams. You said there are sheer numbers of foreigners, yes there are, a fair number of them make up the volunteers, people who came here to do their part, many even came all the way from places like Beijing, volunteers who came to facilitate communication between the other volunteers and the NOCs in languages not even heard on this side of the Hemisphere. So many of us are working here to make this right, but all you guys can do is sit behind a computer annonymously and work tirelessly to make all we do seem worthless to anyone who comes across this place. The empowerment of internet annonymity disgusts me. Thank you guys very much.

To our NEW CITIZENS, take heart that this forum is a gathering place for NAYSAYERS, who certainly do not represent SINGAPORE.

To the NAYSAYERS, WHAT Have you done for SINGAPORE, to speak so arrogantly and rudely?
