PM Lee caught napping at YOG Opening Ceremony?

The opening ceremony of the inaugural Youth Olympic Games (YOG) was billed by the Singapore media as Singapore’s “BIGGEST” show ever.

“Showtime! Dazzling display kicks off inaugural Youth Olympic Games,” screamed the headlines of the Sunday Times today. “YOG: Inaugural Youth Olympic Games opens in spectacular ceremony,” proclaimed Channel News Asia.

[Get instant updates and discussions about the YOG on our Facebook page here]

If the YOG opening ceremony is as “dazzling” and “spectacular” as described by the state media, surely it would have captured the attention of the audience and left them glued to their seats.

Unfortunately, this was not the case. Despite the large crowd present, the clapping from the audience sounded more like a cat’s meow than a thunderous applause.

Some spectators were found leaving the ceremony halfway while others are caught napping on the cameras, one of them may be Singapore’s Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong:

lhlnapping

As seen from the above photo, PM Lee appeared to be napping (or in quiet meditation?) while his wife Ho Ching was “waving” the Singapore flag besides him. A foreign delegate sat behind him also dozed off, completely oblivious to the surrounding cacophony.

Despite the extensive positive publicity generated by the state media on the YOG opening ceremony, there were few reports on it in the foreign papers while the majority of Singaporeans who watched the performance denounced it as an utter disgrace and disappointment.

  • er the 2 delegate could be discussing something and is in deep thots about it. a photo of of someone who had his eye close and head bow is too little to accuse someone.

    MOD’s note:

For those who managed to catch the 10 second segment on TV, it was pretty obvious that PM Lee was SLEEPING with both eyes CLOSED.

Hey, maybe he is not napping? Maybe he is looking at his blackberry? He is a busy man as he is in control of a multi-billion economy *partially quoting him* and that that’s why he is paid an extraordinary wages. SO he must be very busy and right at that moment, he just happens to be looking down…something important may have occurred and he needs to check his message.

Look, look at the angle, it is like the same angle when i sneak a peak at messages when I am at an event or lecture. So let’s cut him some slack…

woa…and for the first time, I am defending LHL…Heh

Aiyoh! Don’t be like that lar! People get tired and want to rest to ensure recharge for the ngiht to come! Man is always on the demanding cum giving side while woman is on the receving end so, of course the male has to get more rest before the “curcial exercise” for the night, my dear! Darling it is getting late and time to have “FUN”!

By the way, the “Jinx” is much better than the “LONE” psychologically whom can lose multi-billions of dollars of state fund without even a blink of her eyebrow yet can pretend nothing has happened and continue her life as usual by staying on to the job.

“Jinx” is so energetic and manly, whereas, “Lone” is so sissy and feeble, in order to stay on course with the nature, their roles should have been reversed!!!! Hahahaheeheehee, what a good laugh and a hilarious joke?

Last but not least, please pay me a few millions of dollars annually for me to take a nap or simply “meditate with my eye close” during important occasion!

Did you see the infamous photo of Teo Chee Hean sleeping in Parliament? Yes, he is DUMB enough to sleep in Parliament in front of the cameras. That’s how DUMB our PAP leaders are.

Can that shot be so precise? This is obviously a screencap. If you got a camera right beside you, you can take the shot within that time frame, since a camera can start up in 1.4 sec. and if you want a shot to be that precise, it is possible, just a fast S/speed will do the job.

However, judging by the pic doubt it is taken by a camera.

oh and why is it a terrible insult to all the volunteers hard work and efforts? there are still humans watching right? not EVERYONE left right? PM Lee is one of the minorities sleeping right? terrible insult should be only one spectator or if everyone is sleeping.

The guy sitting behind President Nathan surely must be in deep slumber – whose face is slightly obscured by the red circle.

PM LHL certainly had lowered his head as if he had just “nodded off” – while all the other faces looked disconnected from the supposed youthful spirit of young school children performers.

With all the same propagandistic cheography of that was only recently displayed at the grander NDP-2010 event, it is not a surprise if everyone had been subjected to over-exposure of the same stale, crass and exaggerated Singapore Story.

It seems that Ng Meng Siang’s comments about the enthusiasm and sparkle in the eyes of the child performers was purely confined to the child performers from local schools – and none of the sparkle and enthusiasm had infected the large crowd, including the local self-inflated VIPs from the Pro Alien Party.

Snapshot taken from camera, screenshot taken from computer/other digital device. Basically debating wether Mr Lee’s pose lasted only a few seconds, or much longer. Which may translate as to wether he was actually sleeping, or simply looking down/checking phone etc. Then again, checking phone may take more than 10 secs so…. Basically im saying: dun think that hes sleeping just cos the guy who posted says so. The link mod gave me comes from a facebook group: Vote for change, vote pap out. Which is as biased a source as you can get.

And yes i agree. Was quite messy. Why no dress rehearsal for the flag bearers? Why speech so bad? As in seriously bad. But thn again, thankful for: fireworks, nice lighthouse fire vortex, no jj lin performance.

look, i’m no PAP lover but…

@Forecaster.. Yes there is a big difference. For you and everyone else, it is not so much whether it is a screenshot or snapshot but it has to do with how long our dear PM was in that position (head down, but no confirmation on whether eyes were indeed closed). If it was a screen shot, it could be a split second that he was looking down, but would have to be much longer if it was taken with a camera (due to starting up, focusing and the final shooting itself). But as what Count and Yamamoto have said and i agree, it is very unlikely that this shot was taken with a camera.

and dear MOD, the link you provided only shows the exact same picture without the caption on the bottom and the red circle. How is that helping your cause? And also the comment by Pragmatist. It would be interesting to see how the editors of this blog respond to that.

Yes, I agree with what you said. Especially this: “To be a truly recognised voice you have to convince the objective and learned (no need to bash me over this), not just the ah bengs and ah sengs.”

That guy to PM Lee’s right in the row above him is obviously sleeping. As for LHL himself, he should remember that people will naturally focus on him. After all, he is the LEE-der of this country (for now…). You would not catch the President of the United States to fall asleep at the opening of some international event (except perhaps George W Bush). Why? Because people are looking at you. People are out to spot your every mistake. Too bad, you wanted the job, so live with it.

This picture is really disheartening to see, and if the reports that President Nathan was also dozing off, then my heart goes out to the brigades of students who put their time and effort (and money! – Bus fare is not cheap nowadays!) into the Opening Ceremony.

Then again, this is Singapore. Who cares? Give me my CCA points and you can all go to hell.

Didn’t catch whether LHL dozing off or not since only had short glimpses when TV was on from 9.30 to 10.05 hoping for the news to start. Anyway the short moments I had of the event (in between typing on my laptop) I distinctly saw our president sitting next to the IOC president – the former looked extremely disinterested, while at least the latter had a faint smile on his face. Also, a glimpse of LHL with his family to right and left — all very grim looking, like very pain to be at the show; there must hardly be a breeze there since the flags in their hands were dead still. Pls lah, whether show is bad or good, the attending VIPs should at least show they are “interested”. Just look at the Chinese president and premier when they officate events – smiles & good gesturing with hands throughout (or maybe they really enjoyed the events sincerely, which I believe so). I thought Singapore very good in PR, at least in the previous generation; but this current lot seems completely clueless on public etiquette. IMHO.

I am sure that all the guys here who have been through National Service have been punished for sleeping/dozing off/’praying’ during lectures, lessons, etc., one way or another. PM Lee was a Brigadier General (correct me if I am wrong here) when he was in the army. He should jolly well know that dozing off is strictly a definite no no. Moreover, he is our Prime Minister. What happened to role models and setting good examples?

PM is our ’supreme commander’, ‘Bad example for a soldier’, MP is have warned him.
Like MM said, we must have a ‘STRONG ARMY’.
(But he forgot about the ‘Commander’.)

Why are you so ‘constipated’ with this article?

If it was President Nathan, would you feel this way?

is your KPI being calculated by how you perform here in this site.

you should stick to ST if you want serious news, if that is what you mean serious news.

    @nihon

Enough with the insults. All i did was question the authencity of this image, and you can twist it into something else entirely.

If you have any constructive comment to make, for example a link to an actual snapshot, or even better, a video on Mr Lee sleeping, then that would be welcome indeed.

However, if all you can do is insult and annoy, then the best course of action for you would be to keep it to yourself.

You add no value whatsoever to this discussion.

Quite clear (yawn..) that the opp. parties (namely, the specky guy) AND other advers.. of SG are at it to make us look bad. Would Singaporeans lampoon at their own efforts and appreciation for such a world class event happening here? Most will not.

To witness talented, fresh & yeah-hot olympians making their mark here, and for us to be able to host the world’s 1st youth olympics is well, groovy..
    sure it’s not cheap.
style & Swagger doesn’t come cheap.

hey opyes, i may not hate you before, but with all these made-up stories to disgrace us singaporeans, i’m beginning to now.

Do us a favor, whatevr you are doing, stop.

    @ SG Dude:
It is not a disgrace to call it what it is.. It is however a disgrace if the state media try so hard to spin this event into a huge success that it is not.
We already look bad before this event… Reporters without Borders, ranked Singapore as 133rd out of 175 countries in its annual press freedom index.
And people like u are not helping cos you would rather live a lie. these stories u read here are not made up, rather the MSM are the ones that are misleading the public. Just look at the empty seats in sold out events. Total disgrace if u ask me.

It must have been so boring ?
    and they busted the budget?
sounds like wasted taxpayers’ money similar to those squandered on integration water festival and such.
we should have put the money to more meaningful use like helping our poor and needy who are growing in numbers by the day as more and more ‘100,000′ foreign trash are imported.
So we are not only paying for singing minstrels,we are also paying for ‘SLEEPING’ minstrels…
    hey!wake up,people.
