Count on me, YOG: The infectious apathy of Singaporeans in pictures
OPINION
The Singapore 2010 Youth Olympic Games is becoming an embarrassing farce for the PAP regime which has spent nearly $400 million dollars on it.
Despite the mammoth efforts taken to publicize and promote the YOG, the response from ordinary Singaporeans has been most disappointing so far.
[Get instant updates and discussions about the YOG on our Facebook page here]
The competitions on the first two days suffered from low attendances with so many empty seats galore that the camera crew had difficulties avoiding capturing them completely on screen.
The number of volunteers far outnumbered that of the participants at YOG celebrations held in the HDB heartlands with the live bands at Marina Bay performing literally to rows of empty chairs.
To compound matters, the YOG was hardly reported in the international papers which have largely focused on the ballooning costs and the general apathy displayed by Singaporeans at the event.
While the state media has tried desperately hard to hype up the YOG with PAP leaders putting up a brave denial in front of the depressing response, the fact remains that no amount of money, publicity or astroturfing can generate genuine enthusiasm, affection and passion from Singaporeans.
We have been challenged repeatedly by PAP trolls here to provide photos to substantiate our claims that there is little interest in the YOG from the citizenry.
We now show you a series of photos taken by Leonard Soosay on Sunday, 15 August 2010 to set the record straight:

You can view all the 59 photos on Leonard’s Facebook here.
A picture speaks a thousand words, let alone 59 pictures showing the level of interest in the YOG from ordinary Singaporeans. The TRUTH is – the YOG is a FLOP. Nobody cares a damn about it as reflected by the online poll conducted by Channel News Asia lately in which 88 percent of some 6,400 respondents indicated clearly that they are “not interested at all” in the YOG.
Now, let us recap some of the most ridiculous public comments made by PAP leaders and YOG officials which are “quite DIVORCED from the reality” on the ground, to paraphrase the words of Law Minister Shanmugam.
Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong:
“It has been a challenge and great satisfaction for us to organise this first Games. I think it has struck a chord with our people.”
Finance Minister Tharman Shanmugaratnam:
“The enthusiasm is very real and it’s infectious. It’s still early days but everybody who has been involved in making the YOG a special experience in Singapore has shown the world what Singapore can do on a scale like this.”
Community Development, Youth and Sportss Minister Dr Vivian Balakrishnan:
“The answer lies on the ground, what people do and how they feel. At this point of time, I am quite confident that Singaporeans are proud of this and want to show our best to the world.”
Singapore YOG Organizing Committee Chairman Ng Ser Miang:
“just look at the faces of the children that are there, the sparkle in their eyes and the smile on their faces. Those are not things you can force. I don’t think anyone will be forced to come to watch the torch relay or the games. So I don’t think there is any coercion.”
International Olympic Committee President Jacques Rogge:
“I expect the Youth Olympics to overcome spiraling costs and the so-far subdued fan enthusiasm to evolve into one of the world’s premier sporting events.”
Sorry, Mr Rogge, but the YOG is not going to become a premier sporting event overnight, not in Singapore at least. If you have bothered to read the comments posted by young Singaporeans in cyberspace which remains out of reach of the PAP regime’s censors, you would have realized that not only are they not interested in the YOG, quite a number are cursing and swearing at it for messing up their lives.
If there is some consolation for Mr Rogge, the YOG coincides with the “Hungry Ghost” festival of Singapore when the “Gates of Hell” will be opened, releasing the spirits of our ancestors to earth who will surely enjoy this $389 million dollar “GETAI” put up by the PAP regime for them:

“We cannot expect to control flooding. It happens in a cycle every 50 years”
So this time the reason for the YOG flop would be:
“You cannot expect us to get more people. It was smack in the middle of the 7th month. It happens in a cycle every 50 years.”
They will reason it as the Government’s own (expensive taxpayer-funded) getai show. Hope the ghosts are happy watching this.

i was watching yog games online…
then my wife woke up and asked “honey, what are you doing?”
i felt embarrassed and said, “err… nothing”
she probed “why are you so secretive? are you watching porn?”
“err… no…”
she got up from her bed and moved towards me and my computer…
“you mean you are watching yog!!??”
“no! who says i am watching yog? i was watching porn!” trying all i can to deny…

I think they lack the hamji-ness of the Late Dr. Goh Keng Swee.
Remember the story where he refused to buy a model of airplane when the salesman just promote on the airplane’s feature? He just said, “Come and talk to me about it after the airplane had proven itself in armed conflict”. (Somewhere along the line)
It is not always a good thing to be the first. However, if the event was proven to be a success and enough publicity was made to audience worldwide for them to tune in their TV for the event, then Singapore should make a bid to hold the event.
Unfortunately, this is not the case. Now Singaporeans have the share the S$400million bill for holding the event. I guess it also taught us one thing. It is not a good thing to be the first but it’s a good thing be be the proven.

Why is Temasek Review gloating over the YOG flaws? Are you guys so childish to think that the failure of YOG = failure of PAP? Would it make you happier if the rest of the world has a bad impression of Singapore? What do you gain out of this?
Singapore is a lot more than just PAP. It’s made up of Singaporeans like me who give a damn about the country. When you sling mud on someone else, just remember that your hands are no cleaner.
Mod’s note: Reporting it as it is is not gloating. What would you want us to report it as, that YOG is a complete success like those wayang times?

PAP = YOG = PAP.
I am happy and gloating that YOG is a total failure.
Now, some answers please, Comrade Balakrishnan, on why the YOG budget overshot from S$ 104 million to S$ 387 million ??

We are not gloating… Okay, we may sound like we are gloating but pls remember, TR is an alternative news channel. They pride on displaying the real truth hidden in our mainstream “approved” media. We are merely telling the truth, that YOG is not a success as the MIW sounds.
And let no one tell you this, EVERYONE in TR here gives a damn about Singapore. It is because we care, that’s why we righting the wrong. We want our Singapore back, we want to be able to live our lives properly and not be some crunching digits of PAP’s evergoing GDP quest.

I totally agree with you. This is the bochap attitude of Singaporeans. This is a sure positive sign for the incumbent Govt and if I were them, I will call for a GE in the very near future.
I am sure if the GE is within the next few months, the bochap Singaporeans will do as they had done for the past 50 yrs—give the PAP govt a resounding victory!
God bless the PAP.

TR,
you are blowing thing out of proportion. Just because we can’t see the “Good brother” doesn’t mean it is empty seat. All the seats are fully occupied by good brothers who enjoy the show. YOG is really plan for the ghost. I’m very sure if the ghost can vote, they will surely vote for PAP. So thoughtful of PAP to reserve seats for the good brothers and sisters of other world. Some more, the dog food for the volunteer if look closely, are really food package to be given to the good brother. The only major flaw on the YOG is that the volunteers are not issued joss stick as standard item to celebrate YOG.
YOG = Your Only Ghost
YOG is truly a successful event for the ghost.

to Linda,
“are you guys so childish to think that failure of YOG = failure of PAP?”
let’s keep it simple Linda, how about the following:-
judiciary that degenerates to kangaroo justice = failure of PAP
democracy that degenerates to a despotic regime = failure of PAP
meritocratic system that includes nepotism = failure of PAP
PAP MPs voted by citizens becoming stooges = failure of PAP
election system that creates many walkovers = failure of PAP
HDB that fails consistently to meet public demand = failure of PAP
CPF scheme not enough for many to retire = failure of PAP
influx of 2M foreigners with poor planning = failure of PAP
MSM that fears reporting the truth = failure of PAP
too many citizens like yourself who cannot think = failure of PAP
seriously Linda, the last one is probably the worst for singapore.

After viewing those photos from Leonard’s facebook, I can’t help agreeing that our YOG is truly the first world’s international event specially host for those living in the netherland, and now enjoying the show as they are given permission to roam the place in seventh’s month. That’s alone is worth celebrating.
The brothers and sisters of the unseen world will have no problem singing the catchy tune of “oh yeah, oh yeah, oh yeah ….”

@Linda: “When you sling mud on someone else, just remember that your hands are no cleaner.”
Wrong use of analogy here, I’m afraid: if it’s ‘mud’ that is being used, this is because it exists in the first place, i.e. the YOG is nothing but mud. So when TR chooses to report this event, it is just reporting the FACTS. If you choose to be offended by the FACTS, then don’t read stuff from TR!

YOG – Who are the Winners and Losers?
The Winners – YOG organising committees, MPs and PAP:
Having spent $400 million taxpayers monies and enjoying themselves flying around the world on private jets and stayed in 6 stars hotels. YOG has given advantage to the PAP and provided a platform for them to shwocase themselves.
The Losers – All other YOG participants
All athletes performing with few audience and little world attention.
Disruptions to all student having to volunteer and to general public.
Singaporean taxpayers monies of $387 million.

All that the PAP is good at is to take our money through any means that they can think up – GST, ERP, HDB, CPF, Medisave, Medicare; and through the various GLCs set up to provide essential services and tinker with the rates charged onto the captive Singaporean consumers.
Having collected and accumulated a huge National Reserves out of our toil in blood, sweat and tears – not a cent will be spent on us without us having to pay again for what is given.
Meanwhile, they will be only too happy to give away Millions – if not BILLIONS – to foreigners in useless pursuit of foreign assets and financial adventures, all done with little due diligence to protect these investments.
To rub salt into open wounds, the PAP has turned into a Pro Alien Party, sacrificing the interests of the locals by opening the Singapore Doors to more foreigners every year – even as they pay scant value to their lip service of moderating the continued inflow.
Should Singaporeans continue to support any programs put up by the Pro Alien Party – when they will pass legislations to bind or erode our Constitutional Rights further ?
It is now legislated that it is ILLEGAL to conduct a protest in public by AN ASSEMBLY OF ONE.
Perhaps, the Pro Alien Party will have their MPs in Parliament amend the Law again to make it illegal for Singaporeans to protest in ABSENTIA – in such a public way on such national event as the YOG.

I do not support the PAP government but I agree with Linda that what we are doing is slinging mud at ourselves (Singaporeans) and our country. We are making a mockery of ourselves. Let’s keep the attack relentlessly on the bad policies of PAP instead of Singapore and Singaporeans. It is NOT Singaporeans’ apathy towards an international event, it is that Singaporeans are so fed-up with the PAP government that they refuse to support events drummed up by the political party to make themselves look good.

There are none so blind as those who refuse to see the truth. Yes, I mean people like 66.6%. Looking at th elaborate set-up of the stages and it is clear that these are NOT empty getai stages. Only something STATE-FUNDED will be so fancy.
Getais are commercial ventures set up by private businessmen. Of course they’ll do anything they can to cut costs, especially since they have to pay the performers WITHOUT collecting admission fees. It is all too obvious. But then again, you’ll have to be completely brainless to believe the miws’ propaganda of the “success” of the yog despite overwhelming evidence to the contrary.
Let us now all collectively salute the yog in our own Uniquely Singapore way: let’s all raise our two middle fingers to the yog and the morons behind it, and chant out “butoh butoh butoh” to the tune of that retarded “oh yeah oh yeah oh yeah” jingle.

If you think you’re doing your own objectives a great service by slinging mud at all these true blue Singaporeans, then you’re very wrong. Even the 7th month getai shows are far better than FAP’s YOG astroturfing attempt.
Getai shows are organized by the common people, for the common people. They feel genuine passion and enthusiasm. That is something no amount of money (our money) thrown around by the FAP can ever match up to.
This YOG debacle shows just how OUT OF TOUCH and OFF THE GROUND our Leeders are. A bunch of patronizing, ass-kissing fools with world-record salaries who dare not stand up or take a stance against foolish ideas.

Unfortunately there are morons here who try to make it seem the yog’s critics are belittling the volunteers. WHERE were these assholes when we regulars at TR were busy hammering the syogoc for the lousy food served to the volunteers, or when we were demanding answers as to why innocent schoolchildren were exploited and forced to stand in the cold rain or hot sun to welcome the torch relay, or when we were demanding answers for the massive budget overruns? NOWHERE to be found, that’s where.
Everybody, don’t be fooled by such scum as linda, trueblue(new)singaporean or 66.6%. They DON’T care about the volunteers at all. If they did, they would be in the chorus of voices demanding accountability for everything that went wrong in the fiasco that the yog has become. No, who these people really are are miw members who are now realizing the degree of antipathy normal Singaporeans have towards the yog and are now trying to confuse readers here into thinking that anti-yog = anti-Singapore.
People, please don’t fall for this lie. The yog does NOT belong to us the people. If it did, then the volunteers who are mostly local would not be subjected to such poor treatment. We were NEVER consulted before the government decided to bid for the yog. While some of the volunteers are true volunteers, most were coerced into serving. The volunteers themselves were served poor quality food that no nutritionist will ever call a healthy balanced diet. The food provided ONLY improved slightly following a public outcry inititiated by TR’s “expose the truth about yog” campaign.
WHO does the yog belong to? WHO were the people who wanted it? WHO felt that squandering money going so massively over budget on it was okay? The ELITE, that’s who. THEY are the ones who want the yog, and they have no qualms about squandering almost half a BILLION dollars on it. It is THEY to whom the yog belongs to, not us ordinary Singaporeans. They CLAIM that the yog will create jobs for locals yada yada yada. People, I ask you, how many of you actually got PERMANENT or even CONTRACT JOBS from this?
And where has the money actually gone? The costliest part of hosting a major sports event normally comes from construction work, but in this case existing facilities were only renovated and upgraded. How much did this cost? HOW MANY of you even got temporary jobs doing this? Or were they all done by foreign workers? Did ANY ordinary Singaporean BENEFIT from this? If so, how?
So my dear fellow Singaporeans, please continue with the anti-yog campaign. Those above us are now feeling the heat. Let’s continue to heat them up until they burn in Hell for the poor treatment ordinary Singaporeans had to endure in their bid to flatter themselves before the world by hosting this foolish non-event.

I don’t think anyone belittled and sling mud at the citizens of all ages who worked hard, many without pay as “volunteers.” Many are saying it is money badly spent, not a few million, nearly 400 million. And there is no commensurate increase in public interests as evidenced by the low turnout at the venues. To those who slugged out for the YOG, I salute you. You deserved better leaders who cared about you.

Some posts here are typical of the way things are run in this tiny place… when things are good and well, the govt are quick to claim credit. When they are losing tons of money or as in this case, a total PR disaster, flop. blame will be directed away from them and as usual blame it on singaporeans.
Let me recall how it is
losses in billions====> external factors
Mas selamat escape ====> the higher ups did not tell them not to install grills.
flooding===> act of god, no amount of engineering can avoid it.
economy turn around=====> due to their policy. nevermind other country also recover, but it’s their credit.
So what is new? blame singaporeans when the crowds are not present?

Why is Temasek Review gloating over the YOG flaws? Are you guys so childish to think that the failure of YOG = failure of PAP? Would it make you happier if the rest of the world has a bad impression of Singapore? What do you gain out of this?
Singapore is a lot more than just PAP. It’s made up of Singaporeans like me who give a damn about the country. When you sling mud on someone else, just remember that your hands are no cleaner.
Mod’s note: Reporting it as it is is not gloating. What would you want us to report it as, that YOG is a complete success like those wayang times?
————————————————————–
Hey Linda, don’t you have a grassroots committee meeting or MP meet-the-people session to attend to rather than post your comments here??

How can the rest of the world ‘have a bad impression of Singapore’ regarding the YOG, when the rest of the world don’t even give a damn reporting about the YOG?
and btw……..the rest of the world DOES have a bad impression of the singapore PAP government for many other things like the unfair elections system, state controlled propaganda media, extreme lax pro-foreigner policy, mandatory death penalty etc etc….

@True Blue Singaporean:

The activities are run and planned by true blue Singaporeans. The planning and implementation are all by these Singaporeans. The big shots only facilitate and advise on the very very big issues up in the clouds. That’s how things run in all organisations to events.
If you think you’re doing your own objectives a great service by slinging mud at all these true blue Singaporeans, then you’re very wrong. I hope all the performers and volunteers and event planners and companies employees involved will remember how you guys belittle them and make things difficult for them in all the future coming elections.
————————————————————
So you mean that the organisers that are now FORCING school kids, teachers, civil servants, fulltime NS men etc to attend the games to cover the empty seats are considered ‘true blue Singaporeans’ ??
Maybe they should be considered ‘true blue North Koreans’ !!!

I think we should still quietly support our fellow singaporean who trained hard for the past 2 years for the YOG less the bought-in athletics from foreign land. The PAP should have spent the money on our fellow singaporean kids who can make it happen if given encouragement, funding and training. From the results so far, I would think they need more training and special coaching. We still have 2 more years to olympics. Let’s support them and be proud of any singaporean who are shine and try their best. With singapore as a nation of wealth, food, I dont see why we can’t make it happen. But we tell the gov not to bring them foreigners to represent us anymore. It’s time for us to Stand Up!

Actually the WORLD CLASS YOG is a resounding success See it attracted WORLD RENOWNED personalities like Michael Jackson Sadako Casper etc. and many cute multicoloured thingies with huge eyes (eh they look very familiar what are those anyway)
If Pro Alien Party had known they could have submitted a budget of ZERO DOLLAR! (Reminds me of free handphone and contract The contract here being that we are the host for the next N YOGs (horror of horrors!)) Heck they could even whittle it down to NEGATIVE BUDGET since they think we can reap back in the long term for Sinkapour

The organizing committee of YOG with UNAIDS provide free condoms which were sponsored by Foreign Action Party.
These condoms are provided to the foreign official delegates and foreign participants so as not to spread sexually transmitted diseases, AIDs or pregnancies to our local community.
Free condoms should also be provided to the wandering spirits and ghosts that occupied the empty seats so that these poor lonely dead souls can also participate in the Youth Orgy Games.

Precisely because this money is not his own but the poor people of Singapore. that he is willing to make this “sacrifice”.

Tue 17 Aug 2010 5:26 PM | | hechua – Who does know how to spend “Ah Kong” Money
With $400m “Ah Kong” or taxpayers’ hard earned money, any Tom, Dick or Harry can do a better job for the YOG. But we have to pay S$millions of dollars to two ministers – Vivian and Teo and a bunch of highly paid civil servants to be in charged and yet their performance are appalling.

I wonder what the late Great Dr. Goh Keng Swee would had told
Dr Balakrishnan for spending excessively $400 million for the YOG Games!
Dr Balakrishnan is one minister I had high opinion in the past but due to his handling of the YOG games, he is now history.

Balakrishnan is only taking the advice of our master investment gurus LKY and Ho Ching: buy high, sell low. You have a ways to go before catching up with their all-time track record of $100b in losses, sonny boy.

Once more everybody, “butoh butoh butoh” to the yog, the syogoc and the imbeciles who decided to bring this white elephant here.

Many Singaporeans by and large have woken up (and are waking up) and unconsciously though, unlearning the 50 years or so of conditioning of Pap and now know that the incumbents are no longer trustworthy – hence the lukewarm response lah. Blame? Not the citizens but the uncaring, arrogant, condescending and venal self-serving MIWs. It is the consequence of divide and rule, the consequence of elitism, the consequence of segmentation …. one can add on lah, the inequities are Himalayan!
One can lie, dictate, hoodwink and suppress the truth but not for long.

My Lord! Im glad youve turned against the Emperor! May I suggest that we wait for the results of the next erection I prefer expending all legal options (vote) before deploying the newly cloned Troopers (violence and bloodshed) In order to prevent this Great Enterprise be undermined we also need to ensure that the Troopers are not brainwashed by Agents of the Empire (MSM aka Mediacock + Straitjacket Times)
Also I dont think 400 million credits are enough to construct a Death Star!

All the money the PAP has siphoned from us citizens have been accumulated and spent on a complete JOKE of an international sporting event in one go. WELL DONE PAP, fortunately most SG Youths use the computer. Good luck trying to stay in the GEs in future. You may fool the older generation with your *EDITED* newspaper articles, but not us. (:

Why are they blaming Singaporeans for not coming to the show? Our country is made up of at least 50% of FTs if one looks at the age group of people that would turn up for such an event. If you leave out ah peks and old aunties and those under 10, FTs are very much a huge chunk of our population.
So top bashing Singaporeans for not wanting to be a part of the PAP propaganda or for not having the time to go.
All those bands should be ashamed of themselves for being part of a propaganda scheme. I am sure they were well paid. If they wanted a bigger crowd they could have organised a show which was anti-YOG or pro the elderly in Singapore. Set up a show to collect money for the old folks in Singapore. Do a thumbsup at the YOG and the PAP.

Is sick that you think when you love Singapore you are Pro-PAP. I for one is proud and happy to be part of the YOG and so are most of the volunteer. There are flaw in the YOG but we are trying our best to work it out and do our best.

I find it strange that card carrying members of PAP and their families cannot be bothered to attend the YOG events too. I mean with friends, relatives and families included there should be tens of thousands of these PAPies in attendance. Why the absence?
They can’t be bothered as well?
Strange?!

Here’s my take on this ridiculous event, and it’s ridiculous turn out:
1) 13 days? Right.
I think holding this “music festival” for 13 days is a tad bit ambitious, and probably an impossible task.
Get real: Lollapalooza and Reading are 3 days long. How on earth do you expect to fill the place at all if there’s 13 days to choose from???
2)Singaporeans don’t support local music??
I’ve heard and read this statement quite a few times, and I’d say Yes, and No.
Look at the Ge Tai and the Hungry Ghost Festival performances. Those shows are pretty filled up. Why? perhaps the average Singaporean isn’t much of a target audience for who’s playing at Marina? Do you think uncles and aunties want to watch Great Spy Experiment? (Maybe they will after they catch them for a first time, because they’re awesome).
The other thing: How do you expect to host such a big event WHILE the YOG is happening in Singapore?? If people aren’t at work or school, wouldnt they be volunteering and supporting their friends / family at the games, or simply going about their lives??
3) Publicity.
Honestly, I only heard about this after looking through the sad photos on FB, and I got to there through Twitter.
Yes. there are efforts like this now http://www.facebook.com/event.php?eid=146637868697404 , great, but it’s way too late. And, I tried googling the event just now, couldn’t find it on the top 7000 searches, and gave up (I would expect that with a budget of $400m).
OK. Let me qualify myself: I keep in touch with the local news, and am usually pretty updated with local music (not the most, but let’s just say that i’m not hiding under a rock), and I know, and am friends with several people who played / are playing.
I may have been caught up with work (LIKE EVERYONE ELSE?) but I think that if someone like myself never heard of it, there’d be people who REALLY did not hear of it, and still don’t know about it?
And I’ve not come across ANY materials about the event nor a description of ANY of the performers. Do you think EVERYONE in Singapore knows who Plain Sunset are?
Moral of the story: Nobody is going to come if they don’t know about it.
4) The Location:
What’s the difference between baybeats and this? Enough said. Frankly, I’ve never been to this part of town, I really don’t know how to get there.
I’m sorry for my suaku-ness, but I’m sure there are quite a few people who can identify with me: I think it’s pretty out of the way (or maybe i’m getting old).
Let’s put it this way, it’s a journey to go to Marina, it’s not like it’s “down the block” for most people.
————————-
Local Musicians:
You are NOT unappreciated despite the shit turn out. Please continue to do what you’re doing, your efforts are not in vain (to me at least).
Singaporeans:
Please try to make it for 1 day at least (there’s still 6 more days). Make it a day out with the family, an alternative to whatever you do: Such events don’t happen all the time, so don’t let the opportunity go to waste.
(for anti-PAP ppl like commenters above: Supporting local music does not = supporting PAP. At the end of the day, they are folks like you and me, trying to carve out a place in our society. That deserves support in itself.)
Organisers:
Softer way of saying it: Lot’s of things to improve on?
Critical way of saying it: Wake up your idea.
