Athletes risk fines for early return from YOG
playthegame.org, 16 August 2010
In return for the all inclusive package offered to participants at the Youth Olympic Games in Singapore, athletes and trainers are expected to participate in all of the arranged festivities and cultural arrangements throughout the YOG’s 12 days. Failing to do so will leave the NOCs with a bill for the board, lodging and travel.
If an athlete or a manager participating at the inaugural Youth Olympic Games fails to show up at an event or decides to leave Singapore when his or her competition is over, the bill for this person’s stay at the Youth Olympic Village will be sent to the relevant NOC.

This clause *might* have been one of the reasons why many teams/countries/sports superstars have decided to not participate in the YOG. Consequently, active participation only comes from countries who can’t hack it in the real Olympics.
Suppose you got eliminated in the knockout phase of the competition. Wouldn’t it make more sense to pack up your bags and leave? Just like in the World Cup.

Am watching Sunday am YOG 1 channel. After all the problems getting students to attend, they now seem to have a new tactic. It looks like the athletes who wouldbe fined if they leave early are now required to make up the audience numbers. While previously the camera man avoided the empty stands, they now pan for close ups to show lots of foreigners watching the games.

Ask the contractors to finish up the dog food themselves. Penalty?
These ppl already disappear in their country already and all these are not even third world countries and probably they are still belong to uncivilized tribes from a African jungle. You want these African to understand law, fine, contract in one generation time???
Our top scholars has gone out of their mind.

Vivian must be really dumb to come up or approve this suggestion. So what happens if that country’s NOC refuse to pay after being presented with the bill? Is he going to impound their athletes’ passports and have them detained at Changi resort until they pay up? Or should PAP sue these athletes for bankruptcy?

Well at least they actually make the effort to treat their guests the same as they treat their own countrymen. Forced participation in hare-brained schemes for the win. <_<

VB & PAP spent $400M and S’pore didn’t even get 1 new public swimming pool. They also had to open mobilise thousands of conscripts from schools and ministries to do coolie work, just like in North Korea. Although the budget is overblown by almost 4 times, but still no money for proper treatment and compensation for volunteers, and have to feed them dog food.
So what exactly was the $400M spent on?!?
The only conclusion I can think of is that if not for this $400M, there will only be 5 countries taking part in YOG — 2 from Asean and 3 from Middle East. The rest of the world will either cannot be bothered or no money for even team uniforms let alone airfare to S’pore.
