Temasek Review has Singapore Press Holdings to thank for their success

I was reading the article by Takumi ( So you say Temasek Review is unfair and biased? ) and (Are you guys secretly approved by the PAP?) by Benjamin, the replies of which prompted me to write this fair and unbiased short opinion piece on Temasek Review. :)

report0

According to Alexa the Web Information Company, Temasek Review was ranked 75,475 most visited site in the world and 329 in Singapore in January 2010.

Within a short span of 6 months, Temasek Review has moved up the charts by an impressive 1386 and 130 places respectively to rank 74,089 in the world and 199 in Singapore.

For a relatively new site which has only been around for  2 years (having only registered the new domain in late 2009), this is some achievement which many would agree – the envy of many webmasters and bloggers on the internet.

ranking2

With power players from SPH like ChannelNewsAsia, TodayOnline, Straits Times and the likes, anyone would have thought that Temasek Review would need a miracle to achieve the standings they have today due to shallow pockets and limited manpower but miraculously they did it.

Boasting a monthly pageviews of approximately 1,000,000 and unique visitors of 500,000, Temasek Review is now THE MOST READ Alternative News Site in Singapore with readership hot on the tail of TodayOnline (ranked 176 SG) and has overtaken the official government feedback portal Reach (ranked 3860 SG) and HardWareZone (ranked 212 SG) owned by SPH.

thanks-a-bunch-bananas-ag1Credit should be given when due and Temasek Review has the various Main Stream Media from SPH to thank for their success. It is common knowledge that all the papers in Singapore are owned by a single media company – Singapore Press Holdings, which is the de facto propaganda machine for the ruling PAP party. As such, Singaporeans can expect to NEVER get any authentic or accurate news from the Singapore media which is ranked a pathetic 133th in terms of press freedom by international media watchdog Reporters without Borders last year.

With the coming of the internet age, Singaporeans are hungry for unbiased and truthful news which the MSM cannot deliver. News, articles and  comments that are prejudicial to the ruling PAP party are NEVER allowed to be published and Singaporeans are fed only with information which the ruling PAP party deems fitting for their own agenda. The same goes for negative comments on various official forums about the policies implemented by the ruling PAP party – they are almost ALWAYS deleted because the ruling PAP party won’t hear anything of that sort, being ‘deaf to all criticism’.

It is precisely this lack of outlet and avenues for Singaporeans to voice their concerns, grievances and opinions that propelled the success of Temasek Review. Not only did they report on happennings in Singapore which the MSM dare not report, they also promised (to the best of their abilities) to allow fair, unbiased and unedited news, articles and comments from any writer, be it pro or against the ruling party, thus creating an environment for like-minded ‘lesser mortal‘ Singaporeans (with no voice) to gather and share.

The following comments from their readers best sum up the reason(s) for the success of Temasek Review.

Tracy Tan: TR, you have done well. You have educated singaporeans of the pap’s shortcomings and failures. Keep it up.

Takumi: TR basically allows you to offer opinions on both sides whether negatively or positively. They publish what you write. Whether you are for or against the govt’s policies.

tr-grabDarkAngel: TR Keep up the GOOD Job!!!!. Continue to maintain the sites unedited and unbiased opinion. Continue to demand quality and integrity for Singaporeans. Increase readership, Increase advertisement to cover costs and Advertise your site to increase readership. Whether in Opinions or Actions, Singaporeans need to believe they can and will have the will power to be able to govern by themselves with their and decide their own future without the reliance of a one party rule.

changed singaporean: I used be to taken in by the Straits Times. Ever since I stumbled onto Temasek Review, I am so informed. Thanks TR, I now know a more balanced source.

Cannon: Without TR I have no voice. I stopped reading local MSMs or watch the news for many years. TR is good for me.

disappointed singaporean: The one thing I like about TR is that it does not proclaim to be fair or unbaised. It is simply a online tabloid, and a very popular one at that. However, it does not proclaim to have no agenda, or is particularly open.

paul: I am depending on TR for all local news as i don’t trust other ankat newspapers. I spend an average of two to three hours a day on TR. TR is very fair and allows even the critics to post their views.

V erySian: At TR, you are able to even spew out or vent out your frustrations here. But in that idiot ST, Today, The New Paper, are you allow to do that? No, right???

and last but not the least,

European Expat: I am a european expatriate and I read the TR every day to get an idea of what is really happening in Singapore. I know that many expatriates do the same. I can also confirm that many diplomats read your on line newspaper.

Well done TR and congratulations for having the courage to expose the lies of the political regime of Singapore and write the truth. Not easy in a country were the fundamental rights are constantly denied.

On a side note, it is not easy for Temasek Review to keep the site up and running simply financed by advertisements alone. On a very conservative estimate, a cluster of 3 servers with the kind of bandwidth and hardware demand which the site draws will easily set them back by over US$3,000 a month.

So for those who visit Temasek Review for whatever reason(s), be it for the articles, to scream your hearts out or merely to de-stress, please consider donating a token sum to help keep the site running.

And to the team at Temasek Review, kudos to a job well done!

Forecaster Extraordinarie II is at least presenting a more factual picture of the situation regarding Temasek Review. I think this is a person with a little more maturity than Takumi who only knows how suck up to TR to ensure his article got published.

Unlike some immature readers who suggest repressive attitude to TR and even asked people offering differing view to stop coming to read TR. The success of TR is because of their open policy of allowing alternative views. It is the core idea of the news blog. After all it is because of wanting alternative news that TR is born.

This is a blog with a big heart unlike some which choose to coerce and control.

    Congratulations, TR!

Having said that, I think TR must not rest on it’s laurels and hard won respectability.

A word of caution, I noticed recently TR has been repackaging old news on YOG and pushing it out repeatedly! After a while, we (the readers) get news fatigue!

Also, TR modulator should managed the amount of one paragraphnews items, letters and opinions which in my view served very little propose other than to frustrate the readers for leak of information.

Above are just my personal view! Many thanks for bring us the news thus far!

@Forecaster Extraordinarie II, you’re right. How can we get unbiased news of the Govt from SPH when its chief editor, Han Fook Kwang wrote a book, “Lee Kuan Yew: the Man and His Ideas”, sucking up to the old man? LOL!

Well done, TR! I think everyday the old fart and his pets will be wondering what news on the ground will ‘discredit’ them – but that’s because they always seek to cover negative things rather than to admit to them up front! What’s wrong with admitting mistakes and seeking to rectify them? It’s WORSE to pretend nothing has happened or try to deny everything, through the useless mouthpieces in the mainstream media. Go TR Go!

    @silenceisgolden,

Your remarks seem pretty contradicting to your nick. I am amused. However I would like to point out that when u have no substantial proof to accuse one of sucking up or bootlicking please watch your words as you do not represent the writer and you do not understand the mentality where he is coming from, basically you are using assumption. Please show some maturity.

Also I noticed that when you first came to TR, your previous comments (shall we rake the graveyard?) were so ahem sucking up to PAP so how does that reflect upon u? Were u not deterring others from coming to TR? (Opps was I using assumption here, geez) Pot calling the kettle black? Sure u can retort but the past history speaks for itself. I hope u learn to respect others so that u can gain back some pride.

This is how a proper article should at least be written. Get your points across, show the reader you’ve tried on some levels to question your own points and back them up with facts and numbers.

To be fair though, you don’t need a Masters degree reading level in order to see the amount of spin on most of the other articles in TR. The difference in the quality of writing can be seen rather easily when you use this to compare to the other articles.

Bootlicking is to carry balls of rich and powerful people so one can get some favor or reward in return, often against the truth.

Example, PAP MP, Grass looters, Kangaroo Judge, Paper General, Super Scale civil serpent and majority of sinkies.

Those who speak up and support a cause unconditionally and sometime at risk to one’s safety and often monitory loss (Donation) , is not Bootlicking.

Some people have a big head but don’t really use the gray matter often.

There is 2 sides to a coin. The MSMs are giving 1 side while TR is giving the other which may suggest that TR is unbiased. I see this as the main reason for the success enjoyed by TR as many Singaporeans want alternative views compared to the one-sided reporting by the MSMs.

In fact, TR offers opportunities for many to express multiple views with the multitude of comments posted.

TR’s articles tend to be negative against the government but then again, is it biased? I would say to a limited extent but this website is a good counter against the PAP hogwash in the mainstream media. The more PAP publishes articles inclined to them, the more TR does to counter it.

(I have to assume you are Takumi when you sign off as one)

Dear Takumi, Thank you for noticing my humble nick. Freedom to express is ubiquitous in blogosphere, no one can quell it or should even try. Your intolerance of criticism to your article shows how much inside of you, you are the PAP type. If you are empowered just like the PAP then everyone who is against you will die. Telling me to watch my words make me so scared maybe you send the ISD or sue me to the high court. I better watch out.

What FEII said is very close to reality, the ST as a colossal mouthpiece is decaying because of their ugly personality. They shun criticism and echo strictly their master view or those views that is in their master’s favor.

In your masterpiece to all critics of TR, you are content to do the same thing by lobbying for outright support of your favorite blog and shun dissent. You insinuate that people who have discontent should not come. Isn’t it TR is a place for alternate views? Isn’t it a place for diverse views?
Obviously you are not a contender of free speech much like the PAP.

If the death of Straits Times comes another newer Straits Times that only give a one sided view of the opposition, then we are back to square one. That is what your critics do not wish to happen.

The sea of dissension urging TR to be upright and fair is a good thing. Yes, maybe TR does not have the resources to make things right at the moment but at least it could serve as a reminder. Does it mean that opposition should be evil and without integrity? Does it mean that dishonesty is the making of a great periodical? Does it mean to snub the PAP you must bring on the most diabolical type and tribe?

By your own words TR is not an ideal media, how is it you never urge TR to look inward and see if they could change? Why is it that you must insinuate that the critic is better not to come? These critics are the akin to fire that help to mold the clay. Their enthusiasm to see an equally colossal alternate mouthpiece that can absorb diverse view is being water down by your pointless articulate.

May I suggest that you keep your shop in order instead of telling the customer not to come to shop? Don’t be a disgruntled sales girl that cannot stand a customer criticizing your goods.

Aiyoh! This just shows that how much more true blue Singaporeans yearn for alternation cum opposing voices and anti-PAP’s sentiments are building up day by day due to the relentless profuse influx of foriegners to this little-black-mark; just a quick example to quote; in taking away jobs, houses and finally women from born and bred Singaporeans!

If this situtation is not managed properly and urgently then, “freak” G-erection result will show the PAP to what extend Singaporeans loathe their policies and desire to teach them a lesson by returning the power back to the people! It is really loathsome to strip off power from this bunch of idiotic nerds and they will really feel the pain of losing multi-millions of dollars remunerations annually!

    Dear silenceisgolden,

Please read my post carefully, I have already stated that both views published by TR are allowed. Both sides of opinions are freely allowed to express here which is why both u and me can express your views on this platform. I do not represent TR or any of their staff neither is my article posted reflects me restricting any viewpoints.
I do not see how in any way my post is suggestive towards deterring readers of one side?

I do not care how TR runs the platform, to me its a media for me to understand the other side, share thoughts and perception, which is entirely up to the individual. Would you like others to teach u how to run your shop or your home?

You seem to like to label and input names upon one, really is that the only way you choose to see things?

Maybe the DON’T COME TO TR was taken out of context and misunderstood, I am sure thats not what he meant.

It appears that he was suggesting that if TR is not the right flavour, one can choose NOT to visit TR, not that he is asking them to GO AWAY.

    @Fact is Fact:

To all critics whom are saying TR is not fair and bias…..

Above as quoted from your article, the opening line, your article had addressed the critics specifically.

If you are writing such an article to a specific group of readers who are critics how could one not sense the tip of your finger. Moreover you insinuate that to come or not to come is up to them. Even a five years old can understand where you are coming from.

I am glad that you have given me the chance to drive my point through. If we want TR to grow and mature into a great new media unlike that of the horrible Straits Times, we must welcome healthy criticism and not shun from the responsibility of credible reporting.

Imagine someday you fall out with TR and they use their clout to drive you to the ground and there is no dissenting voice, who can help you even you are totally innocent.

This involve a strategic policy hence I want to take issue. It is definitely not you I am after.

Off the record, currently TR does have a neat policy in allowing dissention and I hope it stays that way.

    Have a good day. Cheers!

In more enlightened countries, the mainstream media is the watchdog of the government. Some papers or tv channels may be more liberal/conservative but the same watchdog role exists. The ask hard questions. They hound for answers.

Here in Singapore, the mainstream media is nothing more than a cheerleader and a spin doctor for the government. You see, they know which side of their bread is buttered. They know who the senior editors and program producers are linked to, and where their loyalty lies.

SPH/CNA journalists? Don’t insult the noble profession of journalism. You are all nothing but a bunch of running dogs and poor prostitutes. Selling your soul to the Lee devil for a paycheck. I despise you and spit on your faces.

  • Mani the Parrot:

The Newspapers and Printing Presses Act of 1974 is the dominant law affecting the local press.
This Act licenses Singapore printing presses, whether local or foreign newspapers and magazines.
In regard to SPH local press which is state controlled and serve as the mouthpiece of the PAP government, the law requires annual licensing of daily newspapers, which only public companies and not individuals can own.
The PAP minister have to approve the ownership and transfer of the management shares of local press.
The 1986 amendment to the Act also empowers the minister to restrict the circulation of publications that “engage in domestic politics.” Since then, Time, Asian Wall Street Journal, Far Eastern Economic Review, Asiaweek, and the Economist have had their circulation restricted under such law.
So I predict more of these foreign newspapers and magazines are accessing Temasek Review to have a better view of the Singapore political scene.

You missed some subtleties in your comment. TR lead some topical discussion and MSM touches them soon after. There seems to be a consistent pattern. Topical issues like flood, YOG, underground habitation, nuclear power, even economic outlook got a neatly presented light touch of superficial subtle “gloss” there – nothing like the blunt substantive discussions found in TR.

Singapore Press Holdings Ltd which is a private holding company with close ties to the Pro Alien Party government, owns all general circulation newspapers in the country’s four official languages: English, Chinese, Malay, and Tamil.
SPH is currently headed by 65 years old chairman Dr Tony Tan, who was a former Deputy PM and currently Member of Parliament for Sembawang GRC.
The extent of government links to the SPH group: In the past, the group president and chief executive officer of SPH, Chan Heng Loon was a Permanent Secretary in the Transport Ministry.
Executive chairman Lim Chin Beng was a former PAP diplomat and a director of Starhub Pte Ltd, a government-linked info-communications company.
The Board of Directors includes Yeo Ning Hong who was a former Minister for Defence and Ngiam Tong Dow was a former Permanent Secretary for Finance in the PM office.
The executive vice president of the Technology division, Low Huan Ping was a division head in the Ministry of Defence.
Lee Cheok Yew, a former chief executive of SPH MediaWorks was also a deputy director of the Ministry of Trade and Industry.
Chua Lee Hoong who was one of the main columnists of the Straits Times admitted to being an ex-staff member of the Internal Security Department.
Employing journalists with prior governmental associations ensures that the newspapers would be loyal to the government’s point of view.
But it means that that alternative or oppositional viewpoints would be suppressed or ignored completely. It also means that these SPH journalists are being constrain by OB markers and with such boundaries, they are ignoring the plight of Singaporeans when the dominant ruling party passed all the recent ill conceived or unacceptable policies through parliament including its pro-foreigner and ultra-liberal immigration policies.
Over the years to control local political expression, PAP government leaders have also brought a number of court proceedings and defamation suits against political opponents and critics.
Such suits which our Singapore courts are mostly in favour of the PAP plaintiffs, have created a public perception that the ruling party uses the judicial system for political purposes. The threat of civil libel or slander suits has stifled the full expression of political opinion.
Large compensation in libel suits has lead to bankruptcy and a bankrupt person is ineligible to stand for election or sit in parliament. This has been the fate of the first opposition leader, MP J. B. Jeyaretnam.
Now full expression of local alternative political opinion can be expressed at Temasek Review which provides an online independent and unedited coverage on socio-political affairs in Singapore.

Forget balanced and unbiased. Is SPH balanced and unbiased? Freedom of speech is just that, freedom to say ANYTHING you want, ANYTHING!!. If you spout rubbish, then people will ignore your views. AS simple as that. If TR is getting all this viewership, it is because people agree with most of the articles. So those of you who have a problem, go away. But you will be back, like the moth to the flame that consumes it..

What a joke! The numbers go up is due to TR being spammed or ddos. When there’s no spam or ddos, TR’s numbers drop all the way below until even the chart can’t show it because it’s too low.

Look at other sites, their numbers fluctuate around a base number that’s super high compared to TR’s. Their numbers are always stable around there and slowly improving. There’s never a time the numbers fall below outside of the chart.

So, those TR numbers are nothing compared. Readership is bullshit. It’s just spam and ddos or pure one-off sensational exaggeration.

Hey, friends do not swing to the other end of the pendulum. Be objective and you are ok. At times, you criticise for criticism sake.
You can be better if you are objective. You do not exist to run down the government but to provide a service to Singaporeans who lack objective commentary.

BTW, today’s ranking is 70,000 World and 177 Sinkapore, so TR is still under DDoS? :)

TR talk about “daily rank” but show chart for “daily reach”. TR is cunningly misleading. Of course, you don’t see spam and ddos.

Why not you go see the “daily rank” chart? For 6 months, TR is below the minimum value and can’t be shown on the chart most of the time.

    Hahahaha!

I can personally testify that lots of civil servants (myself included) are avid followers of TR. We have to toe the official line in our work, and pretend to agree with the all-too-common daily bootlicking of PAP ministers/officials… but TR has been a powerful outlet for our real feelings about our political leadership. My colleagues and I all love this site, despite its flaws. Keep it up!

  • PAP mouthpiece - SPH:

I like to read on the unedited voices of Singaporeans on alternative internet sites, especially TR.
Now Pro Alien Party uses the Internal Security Act in the pretext of protecting public order and national security to deter political protest and hinder opposition parties.
Defamation lawsuits against dissidents and news organizations are also used as a method of control.
Likewise, Singapore lacks a free and independent press with the main stream media being used as PAP’s mouthpiece for propaganda purpose.

LKY has always been viewed as a very intelligent and competent statesman by many people the world over for a very long time. Now through TR his true colour has surfaced. His cupboard is now wide opened for all to count the number of skeletons in it. All his dirty linens are being washed in the public. His secret agendas are being declassified.

We all now know the real LKY – DEMON.
