YOG critic arrested by Singapore police for calling public to rally together over YOG mass food poisoning scandal

yogmalekThe YOG mass food poisoning scandal involving 26 YOG volunteers which has sparked a massive outrage among Singaporeans has now claimed another victim – an online critic who has been speaking up for the volunteers and demanding some sort of basic accountability from the minister in charge Dr Vivian Balakrishnan.

[Please sign the petition demanding a public apology from Dr Vivian Balakrishnan for mismanaging the YOG here.]

27 year old project executive Mr Abdul Malik Mohammed Ghazali was arrested by the police from the Bedok Police Division at his workplace yesterday morning for his criticisms of Dr Vivian on the “I hate YOG” Facebook.

Malek wrote on Facebook that he was questioned  on the charge of “inciting violence and public disorder” under Section 267 Chapter 244 of the penal code. His laptop was also seized.

According to the New Paper, Mr Malik posted a comment written in capital letters saying that the incident showed it was time to “burn” the minister. In the same posting, he also called on the public to “rally together”.

“The comment is a metaphor. I did not intend for it to be taken literally…..Also, when I called on people to ‘rally together’, I meant that they should do something about their opinions instead of just voicing them online. I did not mean for the comment to spark civil disobedience,” Mr Malik was quoted as saying in the New Paper.

[Source: The New Paper, 25 August 2010]

Dr Vivian has come under heavy fire lately for his response to the scandal. Not only did he not call for a press conference to apologize to the victims immediately, the matter was kept under wraps for three days till the news leaked out on the internet.

In a comment posted on our site, Mr Malik reiterated that he has done nothing wrong as he never had the intention to “incite violence and public disorder.”

“Nonetheless, I still state that I have done nothing wrong. It is entirely subjective (the charge, that is) and if it rubbed anyone the wrong way then it’s not my fault. It wasn’t meant to defame anyone personally. It is my own critical opinion of the YOG and the SYOGOC (and related persons). How is this construed as “inciting violence and public disorder” is really beyond me, and I have re-iterated that to the police. I maintain that (to me), I am NOT GUILTY,” he added.

It is not known if Dr Vivian was the one who lodged the police report since he was mentioned in the comment in question posted by Mr Malik.

PAP MPs are well known to make police reports over frivolous matters. In March this year, a 52 year old relief cabby was arrested by the police for reminding his PAP MP Lee Yi-Shyan of the Seng Han Thong incident and was subsequently fined $2,000 for “criminal intimidation”.

Singapore was never democratic. Please don’t believe the pledge.

And please don’t insult communism. In communist/socialist countries, healthcare is free or heavily subsidized. In Singapore, it’s better to die than to be terminally ill.

Singapore is more of a corporate fascist state.

BTW, make sure when you check, get the service number of the police officer or constable that said its OK to use that word so you can refer back later sekali kenna arrested for posting a word thats approved. :)

it’s the same as must all singaporeans LOVE DURIANS,isn’t it?

i hate FTs faking degrees to steal our jobsby undercutting.
    is it wrong?

i hate poverty amongst our singaporean families who are made jobless!
    is it wrong?

i hate YOG becos too much of taxpayers money are being spent on it with the budget overblown by 3-4 times!
these monies could have been put to more meaningful use like helping the aged poor and sick or go into SUBSIDISING our RETRENCHED WORKERS obtain a higher educational qualification like those jobless bankers who can study with subsidies for a MASTERS DEGREE that cost more than sgd 50,000?

Malik should tell the police he happened to watch the US TV series ‘Burn Notice’ and got carried away by typing the word ‘burn’ wrongly when he was online.

By the way, ‘burn someone’ happens to mean ’set someone up’ or ’sacrifice someone’ if I interprete the TV series correctly.

What is criminally wrong with using some words literally ? Can our police is so retarded ?

  • [He said it was time to "burn" the sports minister and the PAP. "Rally together and vote them out!!!" he wrote.]

The above comment when READ AS A WHOLE STATEMENT, doesn’t remote sound as if he was asking the others to LITERALLY “BURN” the sports minister.

He was using “burn” as in “lets burn these wheels” and add the “vote them out” part, he was rallying others to vote the PAPies out, any kindergarden kid can read and understand better than these sorry excuse of a Millister and Police, anyone disagree?

In ANY CRIMINAL PROCEEDINGS, “intention” is a VERY IMPORTANT consideration and did Malik “INTENDING” to incite others to literally burn the Millister from the above quoted statement?

Anyway, its all a wayang and a BLATENT ABUSE of the Law to hang ONE out to dry to warn the others AGANST NOT VOTING for PAPies.

Anyone again not agree with my analogy?

Anyway, it’s high time Singaporeans learn to take responsibility for what they say/ the way we phrase certain things. Whether Malik had intended the “burn” word to be taken literally or metaphorically, well, it doesn’t deny him of anything. This is the internet and anyone could easily misinterpret his intentions.

After all, we all know that our PAP is ~ultra sensitive~ what. So find a better way of putting what u wanna say across lor

    @HAYOO

Free speech. It’s all or nothing. You either believe it or you don’t. NO such thing as ‘responsible free speech’. Responsibility a.k.a tact, courtesy, sensitivity and political correctness are indeed pleasant, but optional and totally up to the individual.

Also, there’s no such thing as a ’special set of rules’ for Asian, non-Western countries, because ‘our culture is different’. That’s a bunch of fantasy, made-up horseshit which LKY would have you believe.

    Coincidence?

Lately, I got smarting smoke in my eyes.

I believe many people around my estate are burning 7th month papers. Lots of fire, lots of smoke and lots of burning of papers going around us, isn’t it?

Some people do get carried away and the strong winds have helped to fan and carry the smoke into flats.

In the US, in the next few days there will be lots of smoke in the desert too.

The annual programme, (please check out on google “The Burning Man” where each participant is paying a fee of US$350), will have some 50,000 participants hanging in the Nevada Desert to see lots of smoke.

Lots of money will go up in smoke polluting the thin air in the desert.

I am glad at least it is far from any housing flats and there will be no smoke or smell to irritate the residents.

Please stay safe and smoke free.

And he clarified later that it’s a metaphor misunderstood by public.

No one pursued the incident (including the police) after that.

Now we have a use of metaphor “burn” (btw “rally” was the word used by JN’s buddy during his scandal quote:”rally around Jack, his wife and his children at this time”) ….. and he was subsequent arrested for “inciting violence and public disorder”.

Why wasn’t this famous ‘new citizen’ arrested for Sedition Act since the word “dog” is used to describe opposing singaporeans (in an attempt to violate public peace)?

Just buy a plane ticket and go there to live. There is already such a ‘ready’ place.

Only ppl don’t have any assets would hope to live in a place where everyone is free to threaten others and to say to kill, to burn, to rape someone…etc.

A healthy family with parents, sons and daughters would certainly doesn’t wish such place.

So u really think that he would really burn? Which part of the entire incident suggests that he would put it into action? So if someone pisses u off and u tell him/her “go to hell la!” so u really mean u will put him to hell?

And before u drag the incident to a 1000km away country, have u lived there during their political riot? If not, don’t comment and act as if u’ve gone through that ‘warzone’. Yet, u are another one that compare a developing country with a ‘first world’ country. BKK ppl pay how much tax we pay how much? BKK minister get how much $$ ours get how much?

And before u concluded that political change/imbalance is bad…. Look @ Japan, Britain and now Aussie… do tokyo, london, sydney end up in burning flames? If u can’t argue in context, I suggest u don’t waste your time and try.

How about North Korea for you. Just buy a plane ticket and go there to live. There is already such a ‘ready’ place. Since you are an angel, you may like to know your opposite there.

/Only ppl don’t have any assets would hope to live in a place where everyone is free to threaten others and to say to kill, to burn, to rape someone…etc./

You are talking nonsense. If anyone found guilty of crime, just penalize them. Just name one person (internet nick is also ok) who does not any assets doing that.

I’m very saddened by some of the brainless comments made here. Especially those laughing at Malik for being stupid enough to voice his opinion, and those laughing at us being angry over such an injustice. How can people live like that? Like cowards without a soul? Are we so inhuman that we cannot empathise with another’s plight or show support to a victim?

I pray for these people, when the day comes that you become a victim, that other people will extend their helping hand to you instead of saying “HAHAHA your problem, stupid”

Are you all right?….sorry to burst your bubble kamarad…but your implication that “All” Singaporeans must be held responsible for what they say or state…are you sure you mean this or i mis-interpret otherwise…if yes then i sincerely am sorry…

Anyway, do be very careful what you mentioned and state here please…are you implying the following “ALL” ’singaporeans’ to be held accountable also?? Are you even thinking straight what you are writing here…you want to kena limp kopi or get your rich bowl taken away which a bit of thinking will keep safe?

Here is a couple of “notable” Singaporeans “famous/infamous” statements out there in singapore and perhaps the world too:

    1) LKY : Stuff like…”Singaporeans are igorant” …. “Or we go to a small little room and i use my hatchet” [Rough memory for me here]…”The singapore pledge is just an aspiration”…etc

    2) LHL : “Fixing the opposition or people?” right out there on the media in the open…you don’t tell your opponents “i am out to get YOU!!!”…by doing that you are either making yourself into a laughing stock or indirectly stating my daddy is “behind” me ok…nuts lei.

    3) Law Minister [Current one], can’t rememeber this nutcase name: “Singapre is not a country but a city” [And he mentioned this to an international audience in New York publicly]… is he stupid or he is trying to tell the international lawyers at the event he is not stupid? Which is it…i have yet to make up my mind on this.

    4) GCT : “Quitters of Singapore or those ex-singaporeans who leave singapre”….then why in hell we have also “quitters from other countries” coming to singapore…and nothing more to say further on this from GCT? Trying his best to be a hypocrite in the open is it?…but actually is? or not or what???!!.

    5) Charles Chong: his “Immortals” statement…is he still “living” his nutty “wet dream” in the past in the idiotic “Ming dynasty” [Where a general is require to be a scholar, an accomplished poet, a patron of the arts and everything except being a excellent/experienced soldier/warrior first...guess what happen in the end to the Miny dynasty...it fell to the un-civilized / un-educated "babarians" in the end....score 1 for the so called mentally challenged "barbarians"...so who in the end is the real idiots in the end lei]

    6) Viva Bala : “So you want to eat in a coffee shop, food court or restaurant!”….is this guy in lala land or has forgotten his ethics and what is the right thing to do since he is suppose to be responsible for the “office” or “ministerial” position he is sitting in..which is feasible and real policies for the many 1st in singapore even though at the expense of the few [who can still survive as they don't need hands-outs or real help to get up on their feet again given time and space and feasible resources]…

    7) There so many bloopers out there…can’t bother to write anymore…

Whatever happen to “resl” responsibility and “true” accountability…are you implying 1 rule for a set of people and another rule for others….well, all of us and i believe you too will not want to be seen and named as hypocrites and to be seen as dealing in real vetted factual facts in a REAL world…and not in some lala land…with constructive input and working together with feasible plan has always been the best way forward as past history has shown…doing otherwise only lead to friction, chaos and problems for all in the end and we have too many of this “pain” from history too.

Is anyone here a lexicographer? What Abdul Malik do for a living? Is he a lexicographer? Last I checked, ‘burn’ means to set something alight in flames. The only time it’s used outside of this is related to $$$: say if I’d invested my money in stocks and shares only to see their prices plunge, I’d say I got my ‘fingers burned in stocks’; or if I spent a lot of money I’d say I’d burned a hole in my pocket– ’cause that’s more or less idiomatic expression in general, as opposed to specialised, vocabulary. But ‘burn Vivian Balakrishnan’ as idiomatic expression in general vocabulary would be something quite new to me, sorry.

Also, what we’re being told now is that ‘burn’ means to vote a member of the ruling party out. How did this new lexicon come about? I get it! When you get voted out it’s as if you’re being burned alive! Lesser votes means loss of money… Wait, wait, wait. The minister is still in the ruling party and it’s hell for him fielding so many queries from the media relating to the YOG.

On or around 18 Aug 2010 18:02, Malik Mohammad Ghazali (Malik Syasha Sotongz):”IT’S FINALLY OFFICIAL!!! THE MASSIVE FLOODS, MAS SELAMAT’S ESCAPE, WASTE OF $387 MILLION AND YOU CAN’T EVEN ENSURE PROPER STANDARDS FOR THE FOOD SERVED TO OUR VOLUNTEERS??? THIS IS THE TIME FOR US TO BURN VIVIEN BALAKRISHNAN AND THE PAP!!!!! RALLY TOGETHER AND VOTE THEM OUT!!!”

Although there is a typo in “VIVIEN”, it is within no reasonable doubts that Malik is referring to Dr Vivian Balakrishnan, the Minister for Community Development, Youth and Sports. The smoking gun in this issue is the use of the word “BURN”. Around early 2009, Member of Parliament for Yio Chu Kang, Mr Seng Han Thong suffered burns after being set on fire at a community event. In light of this incident, Mr Malik’s use of the word “BURN” can CONSTITUTE A REAL, CLEAR AND PRESENT THREAT to the recipient(s), even in a developed democracy. In addition, Malik had used “US” instead of “ME”, thus tantamount to inciting violence with others when used in collaboration with “BURN”. As such, Mr Malik should stop and discontinue doing so.

This issue also puts the freedom of speech to the test in Singapore. Freedom of speech is not absolute and comes with responsibilities, especially if it is written publicly, which may be subjected to public scrutiny and/or law. On the other hand, Mr Malik should also be given the right to reply so that he can defend himself. Perhaps we can graciously grant Mr Malik the benefit of the doubt that he is indeed using the word “BURN” merely as a metaphor, without any intention to incite violence or whatsoever. Singapore is a young nation and a budding democracy; Singaporeans are still exploring the boundaries as well as potentials. The response to this issue should be measured so that it does not have an excessive chilling effect on freedom of speech.
