Outpouring of support and sympathy from netizens for YOG critic Abdul Malik

Instead of being intimidated into silence, netizens come out strongly to voice their support for YOG critic Abdul Malik who shot to international fame instantaneously after being arrested by the Singapore police for “inciting violence and public disorder”.

Mr Malik had posted a comment on his Facebook taking Dr Vivian to task for the YOG mass food poisoning scandal on 15 August which caused 21 YOG volunteers to suffer from diarrhoea after taking food provided by the YOG caterer.

According to the New Paper, Mr Malik posted a comment written in capital letters saying that the incident showed it was time to “burn” the minister. In the same posting, he also called on the public to “rally together”.

He was arrested at his workplace two days ago by three plain-clothes police officers from Bedok Police Division whose Commander is DAC Teo Chun Ching and Head Investigator is DSP Goh Tat Boon.

Below is a snapshot of the original comment posted by Mr Malik who got him into trouble with the police:

malikcomment

In a comment posted on “I hate YOG” Facebook, Mr Malik thanked netizens for their support and words of encouragement.

Below are some comments from netizens expressing their support for Mr Malik:

Clement Lin:

“HERO!!!!!!!!! you’re a brave lad Malik and you have my support!”

Kang Wei Jie:

“For your courage, Malik, I salute you… Keep the posts coming in!”

Masri Mohamad:

“Malik you my Singapore Idol!”

Mohammad Shahid:

Abdul Malik Ghazali, we are behind you. They have squandered our taxpayers money and what did we get? There’s more publicity for the Commonwealth and even Asian games rather then this silly YOG business.”

Zulkarnian Hassan:

“Someone’s got money to b#$@, 400 million of it. Thanks for giving us a new 4 letter word, Malik.”

Azmi:

“Hahaha dun need $400 million to spent, just need MALIK to do the job done!! Hahah thanks dude… Hahaha!!”

Mr Malik insists that his conscience is clear and has nothing wrong and he will continue to speak up for fellow Singaporeans.

The fear-mongering tactic employed by the Singapore police doesn’t appeared to work this time as MrMalik is turned into a sort of celebrity overnight.

With the YOG drawing to a close, Mr Malik has proven to be its “grand finale” and is expected to hog the international limelight for the next few days to come, no thanks to the Singapore police.

I realised the number of people actually who oppose the ruling party is actually small

small when compared to the entire population

most who are against are those found in the net and they are same people over and over again

look at the participant of TR

it is the same old people that is contributing

What is wrong with these people? I’m sure the gov is doing all that they can for the country. Even if there are mistakes made, at least we are still fortunate to be able to go to work of which welfare is taken care of and also get paid, kids go to school with no fears and getting the best education, having a roof over your head. Isn’t that all enough to thank the gov for? We should feel lucky that YOG is held here. Makes a small country more recognised. For those supporting that narrow minded guy, straighten yourselves up and think straight. Think for the future, all the glory YOG could bring to us.

Flood wise is definitely inevitable but 1 thing for sure is that measures are being taken (if you do read the papers and open your eyes). As for food for the volunteers, those are being handled by caterers etc. So why blame the govt for it? Again, now measures are being taken. So why make such a big hoo-hah now when problems are already solved? Dun be selfish. By all means, if living here does not work for whoever out there, feel free to move out from here. Dun create a scene in this peaceful country.

Stop sprouting profanity at foreigners. If not for us, where would Singapore be?

Foreigners are only 36% of the Singapore population but contribute 45% of the GDP. That means that locals’ contribute LESS GDP per capita compared to foreigners. 你没有资格骂.

    Be grateful to foreigners.

Don’t blame Dr Vivan, he was on a jet in other countries when the planning of YOG happened. How can it be his fault???

do we really need to have a YOG in singapore to rally support for sports. do we really need imported talents to represent us? Why can’t we dedicate a sports minister to specifically groom a good local talent team of sportmen over a period of 3-5 years. If he do not perform sack him. we are talking about managing and motivating our local boys and girls to perform at a much lower budget and where all singaporeans will support.

Even political parties have come up in support of Malik….

It is also disturbing that comments made by netizens can be taken out of context and be misconstrued by the authorities who are showing increasing signs of paranoia.

Mr Abdul’s use of the word “burn” is a figure of speech and should not be taken literally just as Mr Lee Kuan Yew’s violent imagery of meeting his opponents in a cul-de-sac and drawing a hatchet is not taken literally by the police.

If you have to trade your mother for job I am sure you would have done that too. You, like Vivian without the PAP probably would have to prostitute yourself for a living elsewhere.

    Ladies & Gentlemen,

Let’s re-focus and not lose sight of the issue. I’m convinced that the majority of Singaporeans were supportive of YOG when we first won the rights to host it. We were very proud.

    So what happened?

Pride became embarrasment and enthusiaism became apathy…even enger because:

S$100+ Million balloned to $387 Million (…worse when we learnt that a similar event could be hosted in Europe for just S$4 Million).

Substandard food served to volunteers and was not quickly improved until TR raised the issue.

… and the list goes on …….

The problems are crystal clear and so are the solutions to anyone with the authority to resolve them. It’s a question of integrity, accountability and courage.

Foreigners are only 36% of the Singapore population but contribute 45% of the GDP.

Even if we assume that it is true for argument sake, you are horrendously out-dated. GDP has already been thrown out as a viable measure of national well being. If you still insist on it, then you should find yourself a secluded island somewhere in the Pacific. You could then send smoke signals to the rest of the world from there (since you can’t blog from there) that YOU are contributing 100% GDP in that kingdom of yours.

We should fight our battles intelligently. One should not give one’s opponents an excuse to put one out of action prematurely.

“Rally them together and vote them out” sounds ok.

“Burn Vivian Balakrishnan…” sounds a tad extreme because it could easily be interpreted as an incitement to harm someone. Of course it could also mean something totally innocuous. But the fact that it could be interpreted otherwise provides one’s opponent with a chance of getting oneself into unnecessary trouble. Unnecessary because it could all be avoided by a more careful choice of words.

Take Alex Au of Yawning Bread, for example. He has often criticised the government harshly but so far, has not got into any trouble — he doesn’t mince his words but he also chooses them very carefully.

Else…it is the same old same old like previous GEs…even if opposition/AP wins 49% and PAP 51%…the silly parliament we will probably again still have 2 opposition/AP MPs or slightly more and the usual 82 or slightly less PAP MPs…now how nutty is that!

No real substance or true discussions in Parliament…might as well don’t have the parliamentry system since the votes for all policies is always disappropiately in favour of the PAP. Only the obtuse are unable to see and accept the sheer nutty “rationale” or “logic” of such a “set-up”.

  • Mani the Parrot:

There is a valid reason for the massive outcry among Singaporeans and netizens due to the questioning by the Internal Security Dept and subsequent arrest of YOG critic, Mr Abdul Malik by the Singapore police.
Abdul Malik using the monicker, Malik Syasha Sotongz had commented in a Facebook on 18/8/2010 at 6.02 pm, “This is the time for us to burn Vivien Balakrishnan and the PAP!!! Rally together and vote them out!!!”
Due to the mismanaging of YOG by MCYS minister, Dr Vivian Balakrishnan and other incompetent PAP ministers like in handling the recent floodings and Pro Alien Party’s pro-foreigner and ultra-liberal immigration policies, what Abdul Malik is trying to mean is rallying Singaporeans to apply burn (meaning intense anger) to MCYS minister, Dr Vivian Balakrishnan and the dominant ruling party and to vote them out during election time.
So the word, “Burn” here does not literally means “To destroy with fire” but means idiomatically “To be Very Angry”.
So what Abdul Malik is trying to state in the Facebook is – “This time we are now very angry with the incompetent Dr Vivian and PAP and rally local voters to vote the PAP out during this coming general election!!!”.
So if Abdul Malik is to be unjustly convicted by a PAP compliant Singapore court, I predict all the Malays voters will show their support and vote for the opposition parties during this coming general election.
