Netizens unimpressed with PM Lee’s National Day Rally speech

The majority of netizens are unimpressed with Prime Minister Lee’s National Day Rally speech last night which focused on immigration issues.

PM Lee paid only lip service to the concerns of Singaporeans and spent more time trying to convince Singaporeans that they will “gain” from the continued inflow of foreigners than to address their genuine concerns.

Singapore’s present immigration policy is the brainchild of PM Lee who announced his ambitious plan to increase Singapore’s population to 6.5 million people via immigration soon after assuming his position in 2003.

There were never any debates in Parliament on the issue and neither were a public consultation exercised ever held with the people.

Many Singaporeans expressed their disappointment at PM Lee’s “excessive” attention on the new arrivals with some wondering if he is the leader of Singaporeans or the foreigners.

Jason Pang couldn’t hide his disbelief:

“I was born in Singapore. When through entire Singapore education, served 2.5 year in the army, when through good and bad times with my country (the many economic crisis, SARS, H1N1, terrorist, etc) and now MY PM is telling me that those foreigners are as important as me. I’m totally disappointed.”

Kelvin Tay is unconvinced by his speech:

“Why is he always asking singaporeans to sacrifice this and do that, to put aside personal interest for the so called greater good? What has he done to true blue Singaporeans besides increasing cost of living, deflating wages, up housing cost, building casinos to further increase revenue? What has the foreigners contribute so far besides increasing cost of housing, public transport cramming, deflating wages and forcing locals to accept to their way of life where they came from?”

Susan Ong did not hide her contempt for him:

“This guy talks craps and is a shameless creature which I ever Seem on this island ! since his came to power in 2006. What does he do to deserve the millions of salaries which he claim to deserve ??? His skin is as thick as the elephant butt or ass !!!”

Jacob Ng felt that his discourse is fundamentally flawed:

“Singapore is not his so called Texas and we will never become one. The reason is simple: His discourse is flawed right from the start. I can’t imagine he actually have the cheeks to cite examples from microsoft to tsinghua uni which we all know these are unparalleled to begin with, well what comes to mind is only creative and nus/ntu/smu at best LOL so gotta be kidding me. C’mon we all know these are all third tiered when put in the intl arena. Hence his myopic little red dot which he is so proud of will only attract second rated “talents” or trash i called it. He’s main aim of getting in the influx of foreign trash is just a facade to consolidate votes to ensure he gets to remain in parliament for eternity which I know will never happen and we all know it.”

Andrew Toh echoed the genuine sentiments of many Singaporeans:

Our policies and leaders have done well to lead us to this point. But since 5 to 10 years ago, they have started losing touch with the people. They have let greed for money and power take over their ideals and values. It is like a insidious virus, infecting all who enter the embrace of the PAP – Even once promising young politicians end up as clones in white, losing their voice and independent minds.

I believe we are at the turning point. The edge of a dangerous and slippery slope – if Singapore continues as it has for the last few years, a lot Singaporeans will find themselves in dire straits indeed. This country will become a playground for the rich and the elite, supported by a base of foreigners and the “intellectual class” and stepping on and oppressing the shrinking middle-class and growing number of working poor.

The damage caused will affect out generation and even the next. If we don’t do anything now, many of our children will find themselves growing up as an underclass, slaves to the rich and powerful.

We need to vote them out now. Before it’s too late.”

[Comment source: TR main site and Facebook]

It appeared from his speech that PM Lee is more interested to “force” his pro-foreigner and ultra-liberation policies right down the throats of Singaporeans whether we like it or not.

Without a strong opposition in Parliament to check to hold the PAP accountable to its policies, we can never have a serious in-depth discussion and debate on the present immigration policies.

The next general election may be the last window of opportunity for Singaporeans to reclaim the ownership of their country before they are completely swarmed by the immigrants which the PAP is mass-importing at a frightening rate to ensure and perpetuate its political hegemony in Singapore forever.

  • BaSICALLY, I SEE THE SPEECH with ONLY the following message:

    1. Sinkaporeans is NOT important and you canm leave if you want, it won’t affect (us, ie: ELITES).

    2. Sinkaporeans should SACRAFICE foe the FTs and the Elites.

Thats all I see the gist of his speech, anymore anyone?

On a scale of 1 to 10, I was about to rate the rally a 7 or 8 before changing channel to watch some football.

Then I heard PM Lee’s spin on the YOG.

In spite of overwhelming evidence of the problems of the YOG, he tried to paint it as a success.

This completely destroyed the credibility of the speech. I was left wondering that if he was not telling the whole truth about the YOG, then what else was he not telling the truth about?

  • Wah, this is so like a spoof of what Singaporeans have come to expect of standard Straits Times ‘reporting’ that it should be called The Temasek Review – The New-New Straits Times Not! Clap big-big for sheer thrill-seeking, gaming-spirited entertainment. What a dawning of a new YOUNGER age. I do pity the SO-YESTERDAY-LOOKING Straits Times which, to smarter Singaporeans, has become almost like a basic reference for what NOT to believe anymore. I’m trying hard to suppress my burst of excitement to say: Hey, press servants, you so got it coming in this era of the God-sent Internet! And maybe I should just to cover backside, Singapore-style. Not that Temasek Review is less of a Singapore-style these days.

Because PM Lee know that Singaporeans cannot survive without PAP.
We have be supporting the PAP for the past 50 years without changing
    our hearts.
PM Lee also know that we will support PAP for another 50 years faithfully so that “now MY PM is telling me that those foreigners are as important as me. I’m totally disappointed.”
Please do not blame PM Lee. We should blame ourselfs.

The disconnect is from here to Jupiter. $9,000 to live on for the lifespan of NS reservists obligation whilst FT takeover your job at the employer’s decision? Why don’t I pay him $9,001 and he can go on “rest and recreation” to Bermudas or Greece for the next 2 decades – any deal done here? And next decade – all prosperity and joy when we don’t ven know if there is a tailspin recession in the next 4 months with no significant recovery for the next two decades?

Sounds more like the 19% flash estimate 2nd Qtr GDP “announcment” preceeding the next “announcement” of needing additional 100,000 foreign when there is no adds in MSM looking for unemployed seeking work to fill vacancies.

Ouch, they were looking for 45,000 Blanga maids and the unemployed here are ALL not wearing skirts!! And the “hotspots” of growth wERE CLAIMED said to be IR Resort-retailing sector and pharmaceutical sector. MAYBE FOREIGN MAIDS MAKE GOOD RETAIL SUPERVISORS AND PHARMACEUTICAL RESEARCH SCIENTIST. Local PHDs from Stanford had better be given protected “preference to citizens” to drive taxis.

PM lee is trying hard to convince the 66 pct singaporeans who are still mesmersied by the conning of the miws on all their flawed polices especially the FT policy.

The FT policy and its careless and reckless implementation demonstrates a govt that is utterly UNCARING of the basic needs of its core citizens who are being made the victims, together with their families.

The National Day Rally is merely what it is-a rally by the miws to cajole singaporeans to continue to be fools.
if the 66 pct of our fellow countrymen refuse to see the truths behind all the hideuos scheming and lying(with made-up statistics and all-then they can only blame themselves for screwing up the lives of the rest of the true blue singaporeans and their children,in particular.

Remember,in most of his RALLY speeches, former PM goh chok tong, kept reiterating on “more good years” but in the end,we were all betrayed and the more good years are actually for the miws themselves whose salaries have multiplied whilst forcing citizens out of jobs unless they are willing to prostitute thmeselves more cheaply than the foreign trash.

wake up all you 66 pct who are still dreaming,if not for the 34 pct of your compatriots;at least, for the sake of your own children!

  • PM Minister Lee’s speech is very disguising. He is very smart to hide his real face to show our natives that everything is very rosy. Look closely at the the audience in the hall, everybody seem to be very moody and miserable look. He talks like a red apple which is very fresh and brightly colour on the outside but inside it is rotting away and full of worms. Moreover he bluff alot by saying about our Singaporeans but in fact, he means indirectly to the new Singaporeans, and PRs. If you are honest gentleman, give us the actual number of native Singaporeans, New Singaporeans, PRs and the foreign workers. You always hide truth away from our eyes to see.
Very cleverly to talk. Mr. Lee never mentions about the cost of high living that are affecting us and the average middle-income natives who had lost their jobs out to the foreign talents. He does even like us to know how many of the new Singaporeans are eligible to vote on the next coming election.
Dear Lee, don’t try to hide the true facts away from us. I suspect that you are using the new citizens to dilute the votes against the opposition party and given away all the good jobs to the new citizens to replace us. You think that we are stupid, ignorant, lesser mortals and become the third class-citizens.
Remember, we are living in this red dot and don’t use other big countries to compare with us. It is out of logical thinking. Think where we are and what we are. Our golden age is already reached the pinnacle. If you continues in pursuing the fast economic growth by importing mass new citizens, we go nowhere.

In the characteristic way of the leadership of the Pro Alien Party, it is to note the concerns but to doggedly continue with the agenda – as seen in the following statements reported over CNA this morning:

Recognising that the foreign migrant issue present real political and social threat – this issue will need careful management to bring success.

Citizens comes first but the “new foreigner citizens” will be integrated.

This is listening in through the Righ Ear, and out from the Left – the mind does not register what is heard.

Japan, with the strictest immigration policies in the world, now suffers from a lack of innovation and its economy has been stifled. the government does not owe you a living, the government facilitates the people in making a living.

    today in Bloomberg news

“We twice attempted to cool the property market, once last year and once in February this year, but the prices are still rising,” Lee said in a televised speech.

Singapore’s property market would form a bubble if the current momentum continued, Mah Bow Tan, Minister of National Development, said in Singapore today after the measures.

despite early warning from Temasekreview about the causes and effects of this phenomenon as early as more than 1 year ago, we were unable to avert this problem.

it may be because salaries of the policymakers were insufficient to attract the appropriate talent with the skills to handle this problem.

it may also be because the problem was highlighted by Temasekreview, an opposing entity, and therefore it would be a serious loss of face to even admit that Temasekreview had even pointed out the problem in the first place, and even suggested solutions very early. this may explain why the authorities were consistently very late in acknowledging, in small steps, the very existence of the problem.

i’m flabbergasted by the administration that is currently running the show.

“You can’t get it straight away tomorrow, but the wait won’t be too long,” he (our PM) added.

that’s it, he has confirmed to us very clearly that he DOES NOT want the old situation to occur again – whereby when someone wishes to buy a home, he applies, allocates the unit, and gets it very fast, because there is a ready supply of existing available flats as a buffer.

it may imply that this need to wait for a flat, “won’t be too long” is something desirable for the country. until now it has not been justified to us why there is this deliberately-imposed wait, calculated to be of a certain length of time, manipulated such that it will not be too quick, such that you will not be able to take possession of your commited-to-buy flat in a fast manner.

why. why manipulate a deliberate delay.

I’m sorry but I think we’re down to 64% currently, or less. Be assured that you will have great difficulty finding this figure on the website of Department of Statistics, in a similar manner that the statistics for the number of citizens that existed in the past years have been removed from the website. We can no longer now know how many of us exist a few years ago.

The only way now is to count for ourselves. Make a note here every year, how many citizens exist. Try to think back what was reported in the papers in previous years. Look for old newspapers from recycling aunties. Quick. Before these facts are methodically erased from our memories.

Speaking to many Singaporean, they are not so gullible these days. Many are very unhappy with the foreigners and cost of living thing, it’s not going to to change. The sad part is, we let them do it, the goverment. We have a chance this time at the coming election, vote the PAP out.
Finally thank you TR for an alternative view, keep up the good work.

Sigh!!! Why harden your hearts?? you know PM is doing his best, look around the world, got a PM who spoke for several hours for the national rally, Look around the world, he is trying to balance the pros and cons and optimism the best available options. At least I see HE is doing things and solving problems. Before that, I must admit that that I find his govt is complacent, but after the rally, my views changes… So I think let’s us have a open mind. I have a friend (an chinese indonesian) who knows nuts about the pledge or national anthem and yet she is going to get citizenship sometime this year. She is taking up citizenship because she has built up her life here in Singapore by working hard and by having having lots of friends. This is her life. When she told us that she was getting her citizenship, we were all laughing that she could not even sing the national anthem or say the Singapore pledge but then it’s not her fault that the citizenship is given out so easily.

  • Trolling the Trolls:

Dear Foreign Immigrants who have obtained your citizenship,

I urge you to vote wisely this coming election. Voting a few more oppositions in does not automatically result in you getting deported or your citizenship (if you think it is such a big deal to you) revoked. It does not even result in you getting any less benefits than what you are currently getting.

Having oppositions in the parliament are like having a house insurance or having a fire extinguisher. You may think of them as unnecessary until the time comes when you need them. Remember if the PAP can so easily replace the native citizens, it can and will just as easily replace you. No one ever wins when you are competing on being how cheap you can get. There will always be people from poorer countries who can work for less. One day you will find yourself undercut.

Despite PAP’s claim of valuing talent, you have to realize that it values itself and its hold on power even more. Talents and politics may not always see eye to eye and when that happens, you become expendable. Just ask Cai Mingjie. I got no time to flesh out this opinion piece here. I hope other foreign talents who had clashed with our PAp can come forward to relate how you have been treated to give an idea to other foreign immigrants who are undecided as to how to vote.

It should never have been about the foreigners vs the natives as how the PAP is playing it. Conflict and misunderstanding have always been the tools of PAP. The natives need to turn these undecided voters around and not ostracize them. After all, they are going to be just as screwed as we are. Do not bother with the hardcore PAP supporters. We can’t change their minds as research have shown. We should go after the swing votes.

remember that it was categorically announced that the income ceiling will remain and will not change. and when they realise they had misjudged the situation, instead of an admission to that effect, the statement comes out like this:

“I think this group is quite anxious about falling in between, as they are not eligible for HDB and they can’t afford private property. And because people are marrying a little bit later, so their incomes tend to be a little bit higher, so they worry that they will get promoted before they get settled. So we will do more to help them own their homes,” said PM Lee.

  • Flabbergasted:

My Fellow Singaporeans, with all honesty, this is the first national day rally that i’ve watched. I chose to watch this year particularly to hear what the PM has to say prior to upcoming GE as i’m learning to evolve from a fence squatter to an advocate for democracy.

As i listened on, it was evidently clear there was no concrete plan/actions to bring Singapore forward except for the pro-immigration policies and underlying message was to soak it up or be marginalized further.

The one and only new initiative i heard was the 9k pittance which i’m rather cynical about. I’m also seriously thinking how MINDEF plans to disburse payment in stages according to the accomplishment of the NSman.

The PM revealed amount of 9K for Nsman and “more” for commanders.
My question is how much more? I am not asking for more but why not a flat rate to apply for all NSman?

Ask any NS Officer, key appointment holders are entitled to an additional allowance on top of their NS payments/claims as a form of make up for transport in exchange for their time and commitment for forward planning purposes. I give them due credit for volunteering.

I open my next heart-felt question to the floor. Are the sacrifices of the ordinary rifleman or those in support roles any lesser than the commanders? Does it mean the contribution to NS of an ordinary riflemen or clerk means any lesser than his commmander?

I am an NS Officer and then so? I am nothing without my merry men, some of whom are holding reputable appointments in the corporate world or are entrepreneurs of their own. Trust me, i enjoyed every moment being a ground man with the troops as compared to wargaming on a plastic sheet with those so-called “commanders”.

Supposing Comamanders contributed more, yet irony that struck me during my last ICT. I am not entitled to “command allowance” yet was ordered to cough up $26 for indenting of portable loos for field training.

Fine as it was meant for the welfare of the unit as a whole but did not bade well as we were ordered to cough up, actual costs was $25.50 per Officer but they rounded it up to $26. Is anyone accounting for the $0.50 and to whose pockets it is going towards?

Now, what about those whom have completed their NS, does it mean they are no longer eligible? In case it becomes available, and they opt to use this special grant to further their studies? Will they be restricted to courses/schools of MINDEF’s choice?

This new initiative is simply a farce and designed at keeping those elite commanders at higher command, well, happily there. They may of course, turnaround and say this will spur junior commanders to undertake higher command.

I can’t help but think what will be the future for the next generation. Would I be forced to re-think seriously to become an immigrant that may or not be welcomed by another country in case they are not scholastic material as assessed by the Singaporean education system. How many Canadas are there?

In any case, this is my home land and i will continue to preserve my birth rights and exercise my vote at the upcoming GE, if there isn’t any walkover (GE after GE).

I would urge all discerning Singaporeans to stand up for what they believe in, afterall, we can see for ourselves what the ruling party is doing for us. The truth is out there, we just need to see and decide for ourselves.

We knew that he did not consult much of his colleagues for the contents of this speech, eg his Ministers of Education were surprised to hear even that he is going to speak on Education.

He just went on a podium and committed to spend $60 billion on MRT, as if it is all his own money. Did he not see the need to consult Parliament, or the electorate to commit close to 50% of our National reserves, ahead for a period of 10 years, to public Transport. How did he know that the people of Singapore would not prefer to have the money spent on Education, health, or even defence? Did he even think of consulting?

As I said, I am very impressed with his powers.

Are’t we proud of the likes of China actors and actresses who cannot make it in their twilight years settling here and the local media just goes on a frenzy about their citizenship. I’m sure some of them even scoff ‘bai chih’ at people who congratulate on their newly acquired citizenship, not knowing to them it’s actually just a passport of convenience.

To all you NS men out there, better not celebrate yet. You will be in for a surprise just like your parents and many other true blue Singaporeans who thought the CPF would be theirs to spend but now will probably never see the light of day. During those heady days, many people ASSUME that they were going to get their hands on the nest egg eventually, and gave the thumbs up for the party. Many of them are clearing tables, sweeping floors, cleaning toilets, rummaging for tin cans and greeting good day to the new influx of ”çitizens’ which going by the recent context meant this is for their benefit and competitiveness.

Today they give you 9000, after election, they will make you pay 20000.

I think TR is getting more skewed in its report and from the tone of the report it seems to be inciting flaming of the government and create anti government sentiments in its report.

I know that almost none of us here is a PAP supporter. However this doesnt warrant for such skewed comments or report. TR editors should be held liable as it’s their job to present a more wholesome truth.

More over there should be some censorship over contributor’s comment especially when it comes to usage of vulgarities. I hate to see TR going down this anti/hate govt path and hides behind the curtain of “contributors view doesnt represent TR and TR is not responsible for their remarks”. Fair enough, you are not responsible, however you are not doing yourself justice or showing credibility by publishing such skewed reports.

I am sure in this case of the National Day Rally, there are bound to be positive responses as well. However TR only chose to highlighted the negative ones, trying to build an image of all people unhappy with the government. I am seriously disappointed with the TR carry its reports nowadays, made me think twice about believing it and questioning its credibility. Peace Out.

Dear fellow anti-PAP Singaporeans, if you guys love to criticise so much about the PAP, stand up, identify yourself and give alternative solutions that are more credible than those of the PAP. Instead of trying to give big and loud coffee shop talk here, give credible solutions to the policies of the PAP you are unhappy about. Or go and form an alternative party. It is easy to sit in front of the computer and talk big. Don’t be cowards in front of the screen, come up and stand up for Singapore.

OK Mr. Kee, how about you disclose your address and phone number here and we all come over to your house to present all the alternative solutions which we ensure you are far more credible than those of the PAP.

If you dare not to place your address and phone number here then you are talking big like a coffee shop uncle and blow smoke with no substance. LOL…. I dare you to do give your contact info here, chicken Kee.

I switched the set off after a few minutes of his English speech as I noticed his shifty posture and unconvincing tone of voice. The body language just didn’t resonate with the words being uttered. I got the feeling he himself wasn’t convinced about what he was saying. And as the cameras panned on the audience, it was quite obvious what they were thinking. Unfortunately they had to behave and of course the boot-lickers had to cheer and smile when there wasn’t anything to cheer or smile about.

Didn’t you all notice the hypocrisy and the hypocrites?

But unfortunately, for one reason or another, the current administration prefer to be deaf ( they say so themselves).

    @Raven,

“Teach Less Learn More” has happened in my daughter’s primary school. Teachers are indeed teaching much less and also my daughter is learning more, from the tuition teachers I had to engage. It seems teaching maths is confined to writing the questions, answers and models on the blackboard for all to copy with no explanations.

Coming back to the speech, I fell asleep after he started bargaining that we could take in slightly less FT, 80K of them. I was then jolted up when $60B was mentioned. A quick glance at the new proposed MRT lines made me wonder if I was still dreaming and seeing double vision of lines running parallel to existing ones. It seems Punggol station will never get to meet Pasir Ris Station afterall.

Now his son took over and no doubt singapore skyline becomes prettier with the casino and many other projects, the city getting richer but we the heartlanders getting poorer. why? the nation is becoming richer as the expense of the people. a nation gets rich via 2 ways..one way is getting the wealth from outside the country, the other way is getting wealth from inside the country….singapore is doing obviously the latter. which explains why i feel so disconnected with the city skyline n majestic view when i drive on sheares bridge each time. It does not represent the people’s status n wealth.

No he did not. You give him too much credit. His contributions to Singapore were few and far between. And highly exaggerated by the ‘official story’.

He’s just your typical power-hungry politician. The problem is that too many Singaporeans, especially the older generation, have given him the benefit of the doubt for too long. Or, they got suckered into his cult of personality.

A society that robs an individual of the product of his effort, or enslaves him, or attempts to limit the freedom of his mind, or compels him to act against his own rational judgment-a society that sets up a conflict between its edicts and the requirements of man’s nature-is not, strictly speaking, a society, but a mob held together by institutionalized gang-rule. Such a society destroys all the values of human coexistence, has no possible justification and represents not a source of benefits, but the deadliest threat to man’s survival. Life on a desert island is safer than and incomparably preferable to existence in Soviet Russia or Nazi Germany, (or present day North Korea).

If men are to live together in a peaceful, productive, rational society and deal with one another to mutual benefit, they must accept the basic social principle without which no moral or civilized society is possible: the principle of individual rights.

It is interesting that Mr Kee chose to attack citizen@SG to “fight the issue and not the person” when he started the whole fracas by calling TR readers losers.

The issue would be if the govt had done such a “fantastic” jobs in which they had rewarded themselves tremendously, would there be so many dissenting voice in the first place.

In the modern internet age, Keyboard Warriors can be a force to be reckoned with, especially given the high accessibility of alternative news media such as TR or TOC.

Gone are the days when the govt can sweep things under the carpet, in which only selected group of people is aware of the truth.

Frankly speaking, I’m too guilty of indifference, because
    1) My consituency is bound to be walked over,
    2) If the “mandate” persists, I’ll just chao overseas.

Pls remember, patriotism is not limited to the govt( ruling party) but to the identity of Singapore. PAP should NEVER BE EQUATED Singapore as a country

Who’s going to clean the streets of Singapore? Who’s going to build those tall buildings? Come on, people. We live in Singapore. Everything is almost too perfect. Men should not complain about NS. So what if the government wants to give the NSmen reward now? Do you serve the nation for money or pride? The government had stated millions times before that we Singaporeans comes first. Do foreigners get as much reward as us? All you guys are pointing out is about what had been told to us this year. What about last few years? We trust PAP for so many decades.
