No updates on YOG mass food poisoning scandal
It has been more than two weeks and there is still no updates so far from the authorities on the mass food poisoning outbreak involving 26 YOG volunteers which had sullied the squeaky clean image of Singapore.

Above: “Dog” food given to YOG volunteers
On 15 August 2010, 26 YOG volunteers from two different venues came down with diarrhoea and abdominal pain after taking food provided by the official YOG food caterer. However, the public was not informed of the outbreak until three days later when the news leaked on the internet, sparking speculations if there may be a cover-up.
Though the case was reported to NEA and MOH, both did not bother to release an official statement to inform Singaporeans of the mass food poisoning outbreak as if it is not a public health concern.
Dr Vivian Balakrishnan, the sports minister did not offer any sympathies or apologies to the victims and said investigations into the outbreak will take “some time”.
“In a massive operation like this, from time to time, problems will arise, but we will be completely forthright about it,” he was quoted as saying in the Straits Times.
In contrast, the culprit behind the Geylang Serai wet market food poisoning outbreak was apprehended within a week and his licence revoked. Till today, the exact cause of the YOG food poisoning outbreak remains unknown.
The scandal caused a massive furore among Singaporeans who were already peeved by the substandard food given to the YOG volunteers.
How much time does Dr Vivian need to complete the investigations? Does he need one week, one month or one year?
With the YOG having drawn to a close, Dr Vivian must be hoping that the embarrassing scandal will soon fade away from the memories of Singaporeans.

er well it really isn’t a public health concern.. this ‘outbreak’ of 26 person having minor diarrhea of out 7000. As the organiser, i also won’t want to raise the panic level.

I guess our good friend Mr Vivian will just brush it off and say ” It’s unfortunate that this had to happened ” and full stop , you won’t be hearing anymore regarding this scandal again . To them , the volunteers are just ” 2nd class people ” at the YOG while the athletics , VIPs and IOC members are the ones that get the good treatment .Remember not all our YOG volunteers are not ” WILLING PARTIES ” some are being forced into being one by their schools to please the PAP dogs they should have deserved better and fair working treatment during the period of the games and not being treated like slaves .

The reason WHY this sorry excuse of a Millister is NOT even BOTHERED with answering SINKAPOREANS CONCERNIS is because he is VERY SURE that he will still GET ELECTED come GE and he will still be drawing his Million Dollar Salaries living the life of Elites while SINKAPOREANS will continue to be LESSER MORTALS in their OWN country.

simple, after the NDR, everyone will forget about the whole yog issues and care more about what was mentioned in NDR. so they can conveniently forget to address any yog issues. use of distraction to sweep the rubbish under the carpet.

To be fair, while this was indeed a newsworthy incident, it was certainly not a major scandal or top-priority health issue. I do hope the authorities will provide an update soon, but I can understand why this might not be too urgent. Let’s not be too sensationalistic, regardless of our shared disdain for the MIW.

Let those volunteers and “volunteers” have a taste of how disgusting and dirty a free lunch job is over here. No one would ever volunteer their asses again.

maybe Grassroots’ folks were involved in the food supplies?
too shameful to talk about it.

It resonates with me. I hate this kind of “sweeping Under The Carpet” tactic by the government. Your example comparing this YOG fiasco with the Geylang Serai food poisoning case is apt and just. I hope you will periodically remind us about this fiasco.

Guys,
We all know the reason. Why are we still venting? Isn’t it fruitless?
Why waste our time? No one will ever listen and read this page.
Btw, no amount of technical engineering can prevent this once in 50 yrs occurrance. So lets move on. It is a geninue mistake and moreover no one died.

PM Lee said he liked the YOG catered food during his Rally speech…. thankfully he did not get food poisoning unlike the “volunteers”.

in case u did not know, SUNTEC’s kitchen was lockdown for 2 hour for a surprise raid after the incident.(before the reporting). As SOP, suntec keep all a sample of all meal prepared for 48hrs for investigation purpose.
NEA has clear SUNTEC of any wrongdoing. IF, IF there is food contamination likely the contact point was outside the kitchen, and in this case at the venue itself. It is not know, nor reported by TR if the 26 person was from a common group, school, activities or holding area at the venue and may had been exposed to other contamination.
anyway, when can we stop this witchhunt for 26 ppl out of 7000 ‘massive food poisoning’ which case a failure of epic proportion? getting lame.

Can anyone pls tell me, how much did we spent on the catering for ‘Why Orgy’ Games? We ought to be informed and also the catering company that was providing the food? We need some answers and who is accountable for the fiasco? Food poisoning in an International event, unheard off!

Ak,
What make you think food poisoning in an international event is unheard of? theres a certain medical event at suntec over a year ago and further back there was a bigger 1 at Shangri La. Just not news worthy. cause its common

Boliao people like you guys who keep on saying this is nothing, that is nothing will make the MIW happy. If they can’t be bother or take years to come back with this simple problem, do you think they can come back with the over budget on YOG?
Seriously, wake up Singaporean, make so much noise when there are issues but after few days, I hear “Ah this is small issue”, ah making mountain of a molehill. Come on, wake up! If everything small issues what is big then?
At the end of the day most of the people here are just interested in issues that relates to them and relates to $$$ specifically. Like FT, because it is affecting you in terms of $$$ right. Useless bum!

Oh by the way TR, go for it, write about it again and again and remind them. Also remind them about the YOG budget. Go TR, go.

pish… at least they should show some remorse or something for the event… Singapore was selected to host such a big event and up comes a food poisoning scandal… shouldn’t they show that it won’t happen again? this gives a bad impression that we can’t host an event properly.
