PM Lee’s “out of touch” National Day Rally speech on immigration issues

Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong’s National Day Rally speech last night showed how out of touch he and his colleagues are from the reality on the ground, not that Singaporeans expect much from him anyway.

Instead of addressing the genuine concerns of Singaporeans at his pro-foreigner and ultra-liberal immigration policies, he spent much of the time trying to convince Singaporeans to swallow his “bitter medicine” whether they like it or not.

Due to the PAP’s open-door immigration policies, foreigners now make up 40 percent of Singapore’s population, up from 14 percent in 1990. Of the remaining 60 percent who are citizens, an increasing number are born overseas.

A survey conducted by the Institute of Policy Studies (IPS) revealed that two thirds of Singaporeans feel that the continued inflow of immigrants will dilute our national identity.

PM Lee appeared living in an ivory tower of his own as he waxed lyrical of how the new arrivals have contributed to Singapore by quoting a few rare examples.

Does PM Lee know how it feels like to take a sardine-packed train to work every morning, to compete with hordes of foreign applicants who are willing to accept lower pay at job interviews and to feel like a stranger amidst your own country of birth?

Not only is he ignorant of the tremendous amount of strain the immigrants have put on our social fabric and cohesion which cannot be resolved by throwing money at the problem, he continues to deny and trivialize the rising disaffection and disgruntlement among Singaporeans.

While Singapore does require immigrants to make up for the shortfall in population, we seriously need to take a step back right now and ponder if the current immigration policy is the way for us to move forward into the future when even large countries like Australia are having second thoughts about immigration.

The ease at which foreigners are given Singapore PRs and citizenships simply makes a mockery out of our nation’s sovereign identity and devalues our pink IC.

It is so much easier for a mainland Chinese to obtain Singapore PR than Hong Kong PR though the latter is part of China proper. The media is full of reports of PRC cleaners, bus drivers, construction workers, factory workers and even freelance prostitutes being given Singapore PRs and citizenships which will never happen in Hong Kong since they can’t even find a job there in the first place.

What Singapore needs are real foreign talents who can complement our present workforce and make us more competitive and not third class “foreign thrash” who cannot even speak proper English.

Singapore is a multi-racial society and we have a sizable minority who cannot speak Mandarin. How is the government going to integrate these newcomers from China who cannot communicate in English? PM Lee said in his speech that the government has been holding free language courses for them. Can we expect these immigrants who are educated in Chinese back home in China to pick up English overnight?

In the very beginning, we should have a stringent screening process in place to exclude foreigners who cannot speak English like Australia, Canada and New Zealand instead of opening the flood-gates indiscriminately to everybody.

It is disheartening to hear that PM Lee is completely deaf to the growing chorus of disapproval from Singaporeans at the way he is running the country. It seems that he is pretty confident of breezing through the next general election with the support of the new citizens who will undoubtably be grateful to the PAP for giving out Singapore citizenships to them.

We urgently need a serious, comprehensive and lengthy discussion and debate on the present immigration policy involving all segments of society across all races and age groups and a moratorium should be imposed on the inflow of foreigners till we are absolutely certain of the direction we are heading.

PM Lee cannot simply force the rest of us who are unsupportive of his immigration policies to move together with him or worst still, to forcefully drag us along in spite of our protests.

Unfortunately, under the present political system dominated by one single party, it is impossible for alternative view points contrarian to the establishment to be aired publicly either in Parliament or the media.

Without a strong opposition, or rather an alternative government-in-waiting to voice out our concerns and fight for our rights as citizens of this country, there is little we can do to reverse the PAP’s immigration policies.

The next general election may be the last window of opportunity for Singaporeans to reclaim the ownership of their country and plot their own destiny before they get overwhelmed by the tens of thousands of immigrants the PAP is mass-importing each year to strengthen its position and perpetuate its political hegemony in Singapore forever.

In my opinion, this post has managed to highlight certain interesting perspectives on the immigration issues. However, I feel that the correspondent should fine tune his language and emotions to retain his objectivity in discussing the issues on hand.

It is in my opinion that this post is not written in an objective manner enough and is geared towards creating disharmony between the locals & foreigners on top of gathering votes to boycott the current local government.

Words like “foreign trash” and “exclude foreigners who cannot speak English” are flashes of biased opinions and discrimination. I wouldn’t place my trust in this correspondent when it comes down to macro-governance anaylsis/management.

Sweeping statements like “not that Singaporeans expect much from him anyway” or “completely deaf” are irresponsible and as such, reduces the correspondent’s credibility in his ability to identify weaknesses or loopholes that the current government has failed to address or take into consideration.

Hope the above points can help to improve the credibility of future posts by the correspondents of this website, as it is important that our voices are being heard with objectivity.

I miss the days when LKY was PM. Life wasn’t easy but Singapore was like a phoenix that rose out of the ashes against all odds. Singaporeans sweated blood and tears together to build this nation with pride. Singaporeans were proud to be Singaporeans then. I think about all the unworthy FT’s who are lumped together with us as “Singapore Residents.” That’s right. They are UNWORTHY. The thought of them holding Singapore passports sickens me. I am sorry grandfather. I cannot stop the government from spitting on your grave.

Hmm, I don’t know why you guys still bother listening to his damn speeches or any of the MIW, I’ve stopped listening to this so called speeches long time ago. But then again, if no one listen, no one can blast them right. :)

Come on guys, can’t you see how many times his father face appeared in the media ever since he takes up the PM post? Don’t believe let’s just wait and see the father of Singapore will come in with his own speech later supporting his son.

I love Singapore and I’ve no plan to leave Singapore but that does not mean I love MIW…. and I seriously do not think that singapore can only survive with MIW. Is our live better with MIW now? and I seriously do not need him to wake up from his grave should anything happen to singapore, fucking scary siah, just bring more bad luck.

If the statement is true, our natives are already on the way of destruction by this PAP Govermnent. Given another 5-years to rule by PAP Government, our natives become third-class citizens and maybe, fourth-class citizens where we have no say at all. I think our native Malays’ and Indians’living is also affected by this immigration policies that can be worse than the native Chinese. At the present, we already feel the heat is on us.

  • Singaporean FT:

As a Singaporean living in Hong Kong, let me say that Singapore is handling the influx of Chinese Nationals a lot better. We are experiencing future shock and culture shock all at once. I do personally feel the identity of a Singaporean diluted and challenged with the increasing numbers of foreigners in Singapore. I can understand why it is not a pleasant experience being Singaporean. Years ago while studying in Australia, Asian immigrants and Asian foreign students were not very welcomed. Local caucasian youth spat on us just because we are Asians. However this is a global migration is a trend that we cannot change, so why not embrace it with a positive attitude. As long as our government takes care of 3 things, I am thankful.
    1. Housing policies ensure that every Singaporean has a priority in home ownership.
    2. Quality healthcare for the elderly and the less priveleged. You shouldn’t have to be rich to be entitled to medical attention.
    3. Quality education for Singaporean children without having to pay hefty donations to get into famous schools (as in the case of Hong Kong).

It was an admittance by the govt of a genuine mistake that allows the rich to invest in resale public housing HDB flats and resell it at a profit.

It was yet another major U-turn of a major costly mistake, isn’t it?

    Who approved the dual ownership?

Who dare to ask how many people have dual ownership in the past 10 years?

There was dead silence when the move to stop the dual ownership was announced, isn’t it? Hopefully, it will be quickly forgotten and swept down below the carpet.

But how effective will be the move to stop dual ownership.

How many more major U-turns will be made and when?

Who dare to ask MM in Parliament?

after the financial crisis, there are a lot, a lot, a lot of talented people floating around. so this lacking of talent is essentially bullshit. everyone is trying to find the magical formula of wanting more for less in this competitive environment sometimes made worst by some screw-up policies.

the problem is that you do not need so many master, phd or degree to do what is essentially down-to-earth brick-and-mortar work. this world is full of bullshit where more people want to overprice their work only causing inflated cost and ending up having the unintended effect that sometimes penalising people who should not be penalised and over-rewarding people who sometimes do not deserve to get over-rewarded lah.

I am very disappointed that the correspodent has said that we should exclude foreigners from China who cannot speak English.

Why must everyone in Singapore speaks English which is not our National language. Is it because he cannot speak Chinese? Does he mean that we should also take away the citizenship of those local Chinese like my patents who do not speak English as well? Singapore is a multi-racial society, we should also welcome people who do not speak English so long as they are able to contribute their talent to our society. Unlike Australia , most of the Chinese in Singapore are bilingual and have no problem to communicate with the foreigners in Chinese. Why deprive them from getting PR or citizenship just because they cannot speak English?

I do not know why the correspondent wishes all Singaporen to speak only English which is not our National language. So, stop complaining and face the fact that we do need the foreign workers to do most of the work that we are not willing to do because of a simple fact; that many singaporeans are too pampered..

Housing in Singapore is never affordable, please let us know how much it costs to build a HDB flat.. actual breakdowns….,

  • Liberty:

A society that robs an individual of the product of his effort, or enslaves him, or attempts to limit the freedom of his mind, or compels him to act against his own rational judgment-a society that sets up a conflict between its edicts and the requirements of man’s nature-is not, strictly speaking, a society, but a mob held together by institutionalized gang-rule. Such a society destroys all the values of human coexistence, has no possible justification and represents not a source of benefits, but the deadliest threat to man’s survival. Life on a desert island is safer than and incomparably preferable to existence in Soviet Russia or Nazi Germany, (or present day North Korea).

If men are to live together in a peaceful, productive, rational society and deal with one another to mutual benefit, they must accept the basic social principle without which no moral or civilized society is possible: the principle of individual rights.

    I disagree with this author.

I think we need ‘foreign trash’, as in those who cannot speak English and can only work on menial tasks. We need them because they fill up the lower tiers of society by becoming bus drivers, dish washers, hawkers and other of the like.

Think of the future. Without them menial tasks will be carried out by Singaporeans. I rather we Singaporeans stand on them and breath the slightly fresher air on top.

That does not apply to foreign intellects. In a nutshell, stupid foreigners good, smart foreigners bad.

I am now in Shanghai, I am at the police station to extend my stay

If they could included Singaporeans, their productivity, effeciency, workrate will treble

There is talks about “Legalized Hookers” in one island, which I believe is an good idea. Gambling and Prositution you need to place them in one zone, reason it better control & easier for medical check up, and will not lead to human trafficing of child prositution.
And to a certain extend it is good for economical attractiveness for business and lesiure. The same with gambling, if regulate properly you can made tons of foreigners money. Singapore system of “family members” complain their spouse, that lead to a “banned for life” to entrance of CASINO to gamble. China may “soon copy” our system. I watch on CCTV4 Debate yesterday, Trading Commodities is gambling, Mahjong at home is gambling, betting soccer is gambling, Buying Big Sweep is gambling…etc

What is foreigners? America is a country made up of foreigners, she is so strong. New York is overcrowded, Shanghai is overcrowed, London is overcrowded that is the characteristic of a Mega City, a melting pot.
Why did Japan failed to overtake USA as the No.1 GDP ??? anyone ???
Japan pump in more cash education than USA, pump in more funds into R&D than USA, pump in more taypayers money infarstructured building than USA, yet Japan in terms of innovation, creativity in industry, military, economy could NOT beat USA…in the end Japan lost the race. (Will China end up like Japan??? anyone ???)
China is like Japan and Singapore. China is too leftist, while Singapore & Japan is extreme rightist (male dominated society) only USA is the “most moderate country” due to their constant influx of foriegners from anywhere in the world, coming to mould the New America. If you are too much to the RIGHT, you become “Dictatorship Run Economy” where there are no Bill Gates & Warren Buffet. If you are too much to the LEFT, you become a welfare state, total anarchy, the country is Bankrupt.
Japan had refused to allow foreigners, Japan refused to change, Japan is still the old Japan that refused to be mould in different way

In the first place, when was PM Lee ever in touch with the real situation on the ground, the real sentiments of ordinary citizens?
In truth it is way out of Lee Hsien Loong’s depth trying to be PM.

It was a really really sick joke when LKY said it before that Hsien Loong would have been PM even earlier if he was not his son.
My balls were laughing then when LKY made that proclaimation some time back. Looking at the situation now, my dick is also laughing!
What I see before me is someone who will struggle to even become a boyscout group leader.

Haha, the increase in cash downpayment for a property will partially help to cool property market ? Don’t think it will affect the rich people at all; anyway the policies go, they’ll never die but grow even richer ! How ? When property prices go down, they can buy even more private properties & rent them out ! The rich become richer in fact. Forever and ever…..Long live the rich….hahaha.

If an FT (foreign talent)couple, PRs, earns a combined income of $7k, sends $$ home to their families overseas, some deducted for CPF, feed their 2-child family, pay rental etc. & yet claim they don’t have enough to spend, what do you say of a poor Singaporean family with an income of $1.5k – $2k or worse still, graduates who are jobless, diligently & frantically applying jobs for mths or even yrs & yet not getting any ? Perhaps foreign hiring heads give jobs to their own village people for 1 possible reason…Nobody is looking into this critical problem & what to talk of societal harmony, integration ? We’re being quietly, seriously hurt by the import & intrusion of “human viruses”, damaging our locals.
When we built casinos, we already lost the moral authority no matter what “good” intentions we meant them to be; it was not 1 but 2 casinos ! Nothing glorious to boast about….How can our Ministry of Education imparts moral values to our next generation ??? Teach us, we are at a loss…

Come’on lets be fair, he did acknowledge the concerns this we must give him credit, if it was daddy it would have been different.

However he does not score well once it goes beyond acknowledging the problem.
His failure to take ownership for causing the problem and apologising for the pain, hardship and frustration caused to Singaporeans is unacceptable.
His half measures are clearly inadequate and looked more like the usual tatics to lay money bills over cow dung just to get over the coming elections.

The problems his policies have created are immense,

Housing and the related high prices (I wont call this a bubble as such since the demand is real unlike in China where close to half of the new properties bought are vacant),

Schooling (2 counts for citizens compared to 1 for PR) is still a huge problem. His reasoning that all the schools are the same is just nonsense, walk the talk have your ministers sent all their children to neighborhood schools.

Transport (so true rail lines and trains take time to be built but why on earth didnt you do this ahead of allowing the influx of the immigrants. You created the problem you find the solution and make sure you do not pass the problem or inconvenience the citizens but your money minded plans.

Last but probably the most important, the influx of immigrants have pressured many Singaporeans to accept lower wages many have infact became jobless as they are displaced by these foreigners who are willing to do the same for less, not that they are really good but more so because they are planning to earn what they can in 3-5 years and pack their bags and go home after that and spend the money in their home country which is far lower cost

1 more thing, there were complaints about the poor food given to YOG volunteers & some corrective actions were taken. Instead of admitting the poor service & care, it was disappointing to hear our PM said the YOG food was good & he liked it. Well, perhaps, he could be given the best food quality like a king in the palace. He shouldn’t have even complimented them at all. Do you think commoners love his remarks. It showed no empathy towards those affected (the VOLUNTEERS then). Thought it was a dry joke & biased. Not too good leh.

On hindsight, it goes to show no proper planning was in place with regard to transport, housing, education, job, (NS too?) issues etc. when the govt.allowed & increased the no.of immigrants to come here. Until when locals started to raise hell, then they started to react; it showed a lack of co-ordination among ministries eg. did the head of transport raise the issue of how the influx of immigrants would affect transportation ? did the head of housing realise how property prices were be affected ?…..why now then we said we didn’t do enough (I thought we hv so-called the “top” brains) ?? Citizens expect selfless, sacrificial, noble & wise (hahaha) ministers of excellent quality brains with a HEART for the people…..producing excellent service quality & end results. It’s a TALL order !
