Abdul Malik apologizes to Dr Vivian Balakrishnan

YOG critic Mr Abdul Malik, who was turned into a celebrity overnight after his arrest by the Singapore police for “inciting violence and public disorder” has apologized to Dr Vivian Balakrishnan.

Mr Malik had posted a comment on his Facebook taking Dr Vivian to task for the YOG mass food poisoning scandal on 15 August which caused 21 YOG volunteers to suffer from diarrhoea after taking food provided by the YOG caterer.

Below is a snapshot of the original comment posted by Mr Malik who got him into trouble with the police:

malikcomment

He was arrested at his workplace last by three plain-clothes police officers from Bedok Police Division whose Commander is DAC Teo Chun Ching and Head Investigator is DSP Goh Tat Boon.

The controversial case made the international headlines, sparking a massive outcry among Singaporeans who were appalled at the inability of the police to differentiate between a metaphor and a genuine threat.

In his email to Dr Vivian which was posted on his Facebook as well, Mr Malik apologized for causing discomfort to Dr Vivian and reiterate that he had never intended to threaten him:

“If my words had caused you concerns for your personal safety, I wish to apologize for the discomfort I have caused you. In no way was this a threat or perceived threat meant to endanger your life. I have made that quite clear to the police, but I wish to state it to you formally as well to ensure I have made an effort to clarify matters with you. If nothing else, it is for the sake of ensuring I have a clear conscience.”

He ended his email by humbly requesting Dr Vivian to explain how the YOG budget was exceeded by more than three times:

“At this point, I wish to formally address the issue of the YOG budget. I hope that you and your esteemed colleagues will be transparent in showing the account books for the scrutiny of every Singaporean. I trust that you wish to win the confidence of the population, and this is my suggestion to achieve that aim. The mood on the ground is that people are unhappy over the need for such a large increase in the YOG budget when the response was lukewarm at best.”

(Read the entire email here.)

Dr Vivian claimed that he was not aware of Mr Malik’s arrest till he read about it in the papers. According to Mr Malik, it was the Investigation Officer from Bedok Police Division who arrested him on his own accord. It is not known if he has received instructions from his Head Investigator DSP Goh Tat Boon or the Attorney-General Office to do so.

Till today, the Singapore police still has not clarified the recent spates of arrests for comments posted on the internet to the public. Unlike in other democratic states, there is no Public Complaint Bureaus for police misconduct to check on the police in Singapore.

EDITORS’ NOTE

The writer was arrested at his workplace on 24 August 2010 by three plain-clothes police officers from Bedok Police Division on the charge of “inciting violence and public disorder” under Section 267 Chapter 244 of the penal code. The Commander of Bedok Police Division is DAC Teo Chun Ching. Its Head Investigator is DSP Goh Tat Boon. His laptop was also seized. Mr Abdul Malik is an alumnus of Raffles Institution, the premier secondary school in Singapore which produced many national leaders including its first Prime Minister Lee Kuan Yew.

Abdul Malik chickened out… but can’t blame him. Who wants to be a dead hero? This country and its leaders are super unforgiving of whoever crosses their paths.

By the way, Monica Kotwani of Asia Calling, a news programme aired by KBR64H – Indonesia’s largest independent radio news agency, came by yesterday. A podcast of the programme will be put up soon, so stay tuned!

Malik has a life and future ahead of him… no point fighting over such small issues. Who do you think will win? What this episode shows is that it’s alright to ask questions but ask tactfully and respectfully. The govt might not be tactful or respectful in any way as they implement policies without consultation but as citizens we don’t have the right to express our views with strong objections or feeling.

Mr Malik’s case demonstrates that Singaporeans are united regardless of race or background. We stood with him in the high handed manner he was treated.
Singaporeans do have the Singapore Spirit which is far from what the PM tries to say. Unfortunately the government is not in tune with the True Singapore Spirit. They have one Spirit and Singaporeans have another.

On the contrary, Abdul Malik had shown himself as a man who is able to balance between being passionately critical, yet diplomatic at the appropriate juncture. Ultimately the focus is the administrative issues behind the YOG budget, not to attack anyone. Thumbs up to Malik.

@PR CITIZEN: Your reverse psychology attempts to stir readers into irrational rage towards the PAP irregardless of the issue at hand is not appreciated. I care more about my country’s policies and its effects on fellow Singaporeans rather than who gets the power. If it is not a form of reverse psychology, it is a rather childish diatribe that oversimplifies the political scenario. Take care.

This is not an apology, it is a clarification. While many in TR would abhor him for “apologising”, he is covering his bases before he is run to the ground like CSJ or JBJ. There’s is the right tact and the wrong one, and in this case, I support Abdul Malik.

Now there truly is nothing against him, and he can further his (and our) fight.

A MP was seriously injured (burnt) by acid thrown by a man before. Hence, the police cannot take any chances when the word “burn” was used in his blog on a minister. The police has a duty to protect everyone, including ministers. However, I am sure Mr. Malik has no ill intention to cause harm to the minister. It was just his poor choice of the word in his blog that got him into trouble with the law. In a moment of folly, a silly mistake was made. Agree, it takes a brave man to apologise for his mistakes and Mr. Malik is one of them. Let us hope the dusk will settle down soon so that he can get on with his life.

Did Abdul Malik “chicken out” ?

Not by a wide margin – as his challenge to try him still stand – or has anyone read an apology to the Singapore Police as well ?

If at all, Abdul Malik showed the honest humility and courage in offering an apology – for the misconstrued and uneducated interpretation to the metaphor “BURN” – and to the person whom he had targetted.

He has shown even more honesty to pursue the matter upfront to Minister Vivian Balakrishnan – to ask for the clear accounting on the over expenditure to the YOG Budget.

Clearly, the likes of JackOLantern and PR CITIZEN have alot to learn in the POLITICS OF LIFE.

If Malik feels that he had done NOTHING WRONG, he should have stick to his initial stand and firght for it.

This APOLOGY regardless of any further action has SUCCESSFULLY put the FINAL NAIL into his COFFIN.

REMEMBER that PAPies are NOT forgiving bunch and an APOLOGY is the least thingy in mind they would consider as a “Mitigating Factor” to let a person go.

  • @Dram who said: The fact that the police will not proceed with charges shows that they understood now it was a metaphor. When the police cannot understand English, this is what happens.

Allow me ot correct you on that statement. The Police DID NOT INDICATE that they will NOT be proceeding on the said charge, it is too early to tell and Malik is out on Station Bail, it would take at least 2 weeks to have a hint of whats going to happen to him.

He may return to the Police Station 2 weeks later and then get charged in court or he may be “allowed to leave” with no further action taken (for the time being).

*For the time being means he is NOT charged NOW but that does not GUARANTEE that he won’t be charged later should there be a need to “FIX” him, for example should Malik decides to join an Opposition Party (ref: Lawyer Chia Ti Lik).

“For the time being” simply means I GOT YOU BY THA BALLS and unless YOU BEHAVE, YOU CAN BE CHARGED ANYTIME IN THE FUTURE, even 10 years from now. Remember Po The Panda case? He was charged for theft Donkey Years Later on an offence which was “HUNG” and NOT CLOSED.

So UNLESS the Police definitively indicate in writing that the case is CLOSED, Abdul Malik will have to live in fear FOR THE REST OF HIS LIVE with the knowledge that he MAY BE CHARGED anytime IN THE FUTURE.

This is a below-the-belt method of the PAPies’s Police Force.

Yes, we need Public Complaint Bureaus for police misconduct to check on the police in Singapore before it’s too late. Because nowadays our police force behave quite differently form before. They are suppose to serve people, but instead they always harass people even on the street and they are very impolite to our citizens. They always shout at us or even order us for this for that. We are not criminal. Doesn’t mean they have right to do whatever they like. They can check on you on the street as they like without any reason, just because they are too boring or too free. Even after doing spot check, they don’t even apologise for the inconvenience given to us as a citizen. Rememer, they are our servant, not our master. Their attitude is totally wrong and unacceptable.

new name for malik – CRUSHEDBALLSKOWARD ?

I believe you are really ‘daft’ as our dear Minister Mentor says Singaporeans are if you think that this is an admission of guilt. I cannot be blamed if your grasp of English is that poor such that you can only read the meanings superficially.

Take a look at it again, and tell me the IMPLICIT meaning of this “apology”. Please scratch the surface and read between the lines before commenting. What exactly did I apologize (no quotation marks here) for? Read EVERY WORD carefully.

For those of you who need a little help:

“IF (and that’s a big IF) my words had caused you concerns for your personal safety (I do not care about your political career), I wish to apologize for the discomfort I have caused you.

In no way was this a threat or perceived threat (covering all angles here) meant to endanger your life (but NOT your political career).

I have made that quite clear to the police, but I wish to state it to you formally (so now the world sees me as a gentleman, not some crazy radical) as well to ensure I have made an effort to clarify matters with you (so now the ball is in your court, VB).

If nothing else, it is for the sake of ensuring I have a clear conscience (It was already clear, now it’s squeaky clean).”

I think most of you here would have been able to read between the lines perfectly. For the rest who have some trouble, I hope this makes it crystal-clear what I’m trying to do.

I would assume Dr Balakrishnan, being the consummate politician he is, would be able to come to this same conclusion.

Doesn’t mean I’m insincere, you know. I really meant it. I wish him no personal harm at all. Aside from that, I even managed to squeeze in the eternal question that beguiles us all: “Where is the $387 million?”

Please lah, I may be ‘daft’ (because I’m a Singaporean), but I’m not stupid.

Yes, Plato. I am an avid student of Sun Tzu and his Art of War. In this struggle of David versus Goliath, we have to play smart. Asymmetrical warfare is the order of the battlefield nowadays.

    Now you understand right?\ :)

  • @Abdul Malik who said: Yes, Plato. I am an avid student of Sun Tzu and his Art of War. In this struggle of David versus Goliath, we have to play smart. Asymmetrical warfare is the order of the battlefield nowadays.

Sorry mate, you WON’T EVER have a chance to fight another war with the PAPies in power because your BALLS is already in the hands of the PAPies.

No need to charge you now and waste ammunition while pissing Sinkaporeans off prior to GE, not a good strategy right?

Just need to “HUNG” your case indefinitely and release you on a tight leash sufficient for you to BARELY survive but insufficient for you to make noise or die unless you want to hang yourself.

By doing so, Vivian and the Police have been KIND ENOUGH (in the eyes of the MSM) to “let you go”, ie: give you a 2nd chance while you go down in History (if ever) as a GUILTY GUY by your own “apology”.

Now Malik, can YOU also read between the lines and UNDERSTAND what I am TRYING SO FREAKING HARD to tell you?

It’s really sad that in this country we’re not allowed to protest or have our opinions heard. That we’re not allowed to speak our minds even online. That everyone, that’s you, all you people posting comments including myself, are at risk of an arrest be it a choice of words that we use or someone’s name quoted. This is precisely the fear that helps Governments rule their people. Not just this particular Govt but many many Govts. Where is the 4th estate? Who will watch the Govt? Who will watch the police/judiciary? Who? Perhaps that’s why we need the opposition. Whether the candidates are great or crap, we NEED them. Cos they perform this function and they question and check on the ones in power. WE NEED THEM. Did our dear PM not say that we need to embrace foreigners so we can better ourselves? Let’s see PAP embrace the opposition to better themselves. Stop arresting, stop bankrupting them. Embrace these foreigners. Please.

I for one, am not for Governments cos its a mere play of power and money. Perhaps there will be that long awaited revolution. Perhaps not in my lifetime but I hope I can create a better world for my children to live in.

Abdul, you did the right thing. No use fighting for your fellow ball-less native Singaporeans who expect you to do ALL THE WORK, while they just sit down and enjoy the fruits of your labour.

Tell us, how many Abdul Malik are there in Singapore?

    ONE.

    This proves only ONE thing:

Native Singaporeans wants their rights as citizens but expect other native Singaporeans to fight for THEM.

    WTF.

No need for Malik to butt his head against the wall. This is a no-win and no-loss situation. Malik made his point. There is no need to further aggravate the situation and no need for further and needless bravado.

He only has a knife but they have the cannons. Like Mao Tse Tung said you withdraw to fight another day.

Looks like the police will have no choice to let Malik go free. Saving face for their image is more important.

I still must say that I applaud the close reading by the investigating officer of the comment Abdul Malik made. Now that Abdul Malik has come forth and said that ‘burn Vivien Balakrishnan’ is metaphorical though, and not literal; and is contextual in the light of the following statement he made ['vote (PAP) out'], it becomes clearer. Like for instance if I say, ‘f*ck your mother’ and then say sorry after that I can be forgiven. I don’t need to be cut up with a knife. Since contextually ‘f*ck your mother’ is an apology.

This Malik is a smart guy. As a few reader have pointed out that by apologising, he has shown that he is a humble guy. Notice he apologised for the harsh words “burn” but make no apologies but instead persists in questioning the minister. Now it’s VB’s turn to show humility (esp. as MCYS minister), if he had managed it badly or come out with facts.

    We await the verdict.

Malik, you done the right thing by apologising in a manner that hints sarcasm. But there is a good chance that he will not reply you at all and fully let the police do their “work”. You need to corner him for the answer.

PAP should not FOCUS on such small matters, they should close ranks and move on to other things… Should be focusing on the following

    1) Over crowding
    2) HDB sky rocketing prices
    3) Depressed wages
    4) Old people with no medical and minimum wage
    5) Medical and education for Singaporeans
    6) NS for foreigners
    7) CPF and low birth rate
    8)having more OPPOSITION in parliment
    9) Abolishing GRC
    10) No such thing as “walk overs”
    11) Temasek and GIC investments

SO much issues need attention, so please move on …..

  • Some humans and their leaders do not believe that the unseen world exists and do not respect the Unseen, and yet many of them readily and easily believe the words of politicians.

This is the fundamental contradiction in the lives of humans.

Like or Dislike: Thumb up 0 Thumb down 0

  • Apologies

What is genuine and sincere apology? Ponder.

Apology like all things stems from the Unseen. Ponder.

Those who do not believe in the Unseen will continue to make a mockery of sincere apologies, isn’t it?

Those who have a belief should go down on their knees at their places of worship to offer contrition and repentance as a way of apology from the bottom of their hearts.

It will uplift their hearts when they go down on their knees.

Apology not just from the heart, more so it should come from the inner depths of one’s soul.

Both the soul and the heart like all things stem from the Unseen. Ponder this deeply and spiritually to know what is true sincere apologies.

Many humans and their leaders are still groping in the dark about this. Very sad.

You may now apply to your nearest opposition team as GE nears.
Being the opposition member you can carry “your fights for Government accountability” to the next level.
There are many pressing issues beside the YOG, as some readers has pointed out truly. Reflect upon them and put up strong suggestions/ alternatives to remedy them and get accountability for the people.

Use your intellects to the fullest and work for the people sincerely.
“Dare to CHANGE” is the buzz word for the upcoming GE.
May the force be with you !

MM Lee once boasted unashamedly about the PAP’s complete dominance in Singapore during an interview with its mouthpiece Petir in 1982:
“I make no apologies that the PAP is the (Singapore) Government and the Government is the PAP.”
Such Pro Alien Party’s dominance includes the grassroots organizations, the mainstream media, trade unions, police, Internal Security Department, Singapore courts and state-linked companies.
Luckily, Abdul Malik is now just a government critic who points out the mistakes and oversights of the government directly and fearlessly so that it is held accountable for them.
“If we had considered them serious political figures, we would not have kept them politically alive for so long. We could have bankrupt them earlier.” – Lee Kuan Yew on political opposition, Straits Times, Sept 14 2003.
When Abdul Malik enters the political arena, he should choose his choice of words with due care and be more wary of the government machinery that support the PAP to fix any political opponent.
But with the support of islandwide Singaporeans and including netizens from TR, Abdul Malik can help the opposition parties to wrestle dominant control from the present ruling party so as to look after the interest of the local citizens.
    现在每个政策,都会给人民带来不安,政府这些政策造成一些对人民不利的影响。
Now every PAP policy, including immigration policy gives Singaporeans consternation, dread & confusion and such policies will disadvantaged the local citizens.
