Facebook group set up to say “No” to foreign talent

Despite the best of efforts of Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong to appease angry Singaporeans during his National Day Rally speech over his ultra-liberal immigration policies, Singaporeans remain unconvinced by his argument that Singapore needs foreigners to continue growing.

Two days after his speech, a Facebook group was set up to say “No” to foreign talent and it has attracted more than 80 fans in a single day.

Started by an anonymous netizen SMS Tan, the Facebook calls on Singaporeans to give feedback about abuse and racial discrimination by foreigners in Singapore:

“Singapore-born citizens should be VIP Very Important People in this country but we are being treated as 2nd class citizens. This party though unofficial hopes to protect our Singapore-born VIP citizens against Foreign Talent, Foreign Labour and Foreigner abuse, bully and racial discriminations in your workplaces and homes. Group helps you to give the feedback to relevant authority. Your case stories with the anonymous names are to be listed in group’s wall so our VIP citizens can learn from such experiences. Your details are private and confidential, won’t be disclosed to anyone globally.”

There is a wide gulf between what is reported in the mainstream media and the views expressed by Singaporeans on internet forums and blogs. While the former heaped generous praises on PM Lee’s speech, many netizens are unconvinced by his sincerity.

The PAP may be doing itself a disservice by being over-dependent on the mainstream media and official feedback channels while ignoring the genuine concerns, frustrations and angers expressed by netizens elsewhere.

The foreigner issue may be the PAP’s Achilles Heel in the next general election and it remains to be seen if it is in for a rude shock like what happened to Malaysia in its 2008 election.

NO NEED to give feedback to PAP anymore than what they already have tons and tons of it via Reach, via PCF, via Community Centres, via CCC’s, via their various Grassroots groups, via their VAST Machinery, yes the PAP machinery.

Its not necessary – as we can see all feedback, all real-ground unhappiness the PAP knows fully well, as throughout ALL these years, the PAP very blatantly continuously keep on increasing foreigners presence here via their VERY liberal employment and PR granting rules and schemes CROWDING out Singaporeans LIVLIHOOD in schooling, housing, public transport, receration ETC etc. Not Forgetting Problem of LITTERING, road accidents caused by many foreigners!!!

The ONLY Effective feedback is ONE piece of PAPEER – VIA the BALLOT BOX….

Since Singapore independence, All Singaporeans have contributed so much in the last 45 years building our nation to its present day.

Now, this PM is telling each and every Singaporean that he is abandoning us, Singaporeans for Foreigners.

the MSM is doing the govt a great disservice by self-censoring unflattering news – long enough of such self-delusionary tactics the ruling party will start to believe in its own spin and lose touch with the real ground situation. REACH is not helping by sugar-coating for the top to actual ground feedback.

honestly,it’s a plus to another country to have real talents flocking into the country to contribute.
but are we getting talents or TRASH that are being discardrd by others?
and, please, why are foregners who are supposed to be talents cominghere to steal the jobs,by foul means,of locals who are considered no talents but anyhow, were able to do a better job with higher productivity then these Indian ‘PORFESSIONALS”?

SO,WHAT FT is the govt importing?
talnets who came here like JIM ROGERS does not have to nor want to the jobs that ‘NO TLANETS’ LOCALS Aare doing, right?
    Now,that’s a ‘FOREIGN TALENT’.
If you wanna win a medal or two in the Olympics or YOG BY SPENDING HUNDREDS OF MILLIONS of taxpayers’ money, that’s still understandable, though SILLY as We,currently, don’t have people to win TABLE=TENNIS medals for you.
BUT,if you bring in people to do those jobs that SINKIES ARE DOING AND CAN DO MUCH BETTER,you’ve better knwo that it is both economically wrong and ehtically unacceptable!

The way I see it, PAP is incapable of putting Singapore citizens first. The most they can do is implement some cosmestic changes like reducing FT intake by 20%.

THe future is bleak for Singaporeans if PAP continues to have a strong mandate.

I fully appreciate foreign talent. real talent not bullshiter or good talker talking his way into get employed. One example how they manage to get employed. First work in a large known company back home. Apply for a job here. Got the job here. Soon when they know he can’t work he has to change job quickly until he gets to a senior position not easy to touch. By then the junior will do all the work for him that is what happen to my friend doing all his work when he know nuts. Secondly when they are in high places they bring in all their croonies from his homeland. So it multiply. So you think you have chance. System no more base on meritocracy. Base on connection no more talent

And foreigners, whether Talent or Not, as you can see many of them are muderers (those in Kallang), robbers (the same ones that committed robbery because of a few $$$ and mobile phones I think), criminals (those who operate Massage parlours, and sell their body in various budget hotels)- ALL THESE you bastard PAP welcome with Open Arms As Talents …. what Kind of STUPID and Laughable policies ARE these…

I have no issue with real “Talent” (FT). I also have no problem with Foreign Labour (those who do the hard labour – maids, construction/shipyard workers and the like) : they do make our lives a bit more comfortable.
What I cannot take is the Foreign Trash : those who come and “Eat Our Food”, “Take Our Homes”, “Talk Cock & Sing Song” and “Spit on us and Shit In My Garden” and when crisis happen for sure they will “Run Road”………….don’t believe, ask them if they have given up their Passport from home…….

Guys, FTs is not the problem. The problem is how Singaporeans are treated. If we have minimum wage, and policies to control HDB price and so on, there will not be so many FTs.

We DO NOT have any of the measures to safe guard Singaporeans’ interests. In fact, FAP do more to help the FTs than Singaporeans.

When do they need us ?? YOG, NDP to make them feel great.

  • Ben Jamin:

From what we can read here most Singaporeans are not against foreigners totally. There is general acceptance of having ‘real’ talented professionals or foreigners in jobs that are shunned by Singaporeans like construction, shipyard, cleaning, etc. But that’s not what the common people see around them, especially in their workplaces, in MRTs,in buses, around their housing estates and in such large overwhelming numbers and in such a short period of time.

One contributing factor to this perception is the inavailability of the actual numbers of immigrants, new citizens, PRs and foreigners. The government’s reluctance to reveal the breakdown figures really add to the doubt and suspicion of the people that there are more to
what they are already seeing. More anxiety when the government is adamant in wanting 6.5 million for this small country when the influx should be put on hold immediately.

Of course it is the people’s firsthand experience in the inadequacy of the infrastructure (trains, buses, hospitals, polyclinics, schools, U’s, housing) that piles on to this frustration. The insecurity or loss of their jobs (which threatens the whole family unit, the foundation of a society) should be seen as a last straw. It is not too late to reveal and to tell the situation as it is to the people. Singaporeans are not unreasonable people. We can solve this country’s problems together, citizens and government.

The PM said races distribution is under control with new influx of PR n Foreigners,as stated Indians propotion increased to double? why is dat so? never explain..,so are Eurasians and `other’ races are doubling n growing fast as days goes by.So the Heartlanders Chinese n Malays are shrinking more n more.Once the Heartlanders get to 50% and below, all is too late,we will see trouble…no point crying or yelling at the garment anymore,Foreigners set foot in ur country, its hard to get them out.Like the Jews settled in Palestinian state, take more than 60% of Palestinian lands from 1946 till now, never go out.

There is no such thing as foreign talent – it was coined n defined by the incumbents and used to hoodwink the public into accepting this dubious policy. Can a clerical post filled up by a Filipino/ a massuese from China, an Indian with a degree or even others with unrecognised qualifications from unheard of Univerisites/institutions be labelled as foreign talent. There are some exceptions where there is a necessity to import or hire a foreigner to fill up specific or specialty jobs that genuinely cannot be found amongst the locals or it is shunned. (As for the latter position, it is shunned cos it is exploitation via low wages for a local to sustain himself/herself.
Now it does not seem so and why is it so? Simply put it is the one-party rule – no transparency at all.
Heard of any country doing such a thing?
Immigration is good – but not at the expense of citizens lah.The real beneficiaris are those MIWs, cronies, cohorts and the pte companies (MNCs included); hence the quick rush to fill up with more foreign foreginers.
Singaporeans are unduly, unfairly being sacrificed on the altar of greed lah . Political power and $$$ is and was the real motive from the start.
PS – Employers only know the colour of money and as long as there is no minimum wage policy – anything goes.
