National Solidarity Party: Response to PM Lee’s Nation Day Rally Speech

Author: Goh Meng Seng (Secretary General)

nsp_logo

We are glad to hear the Prime Minister addressing the various key problems that we have been raising for the past one year in his National Day Rally speech.

However, at closer examination, we have the following key points to make:

$60 billion for MRT infrastructure over 10 years

1. Where would the government get the funding of $60B from?

2. Will the PAP government increase the GST to 10% or raise other taxes to get additional funding? Will the public transport fares increase to finance this expenditure?

3. Will the PAP government keep to the promised time frame of 10 years? The PAP government has delayed various important infrastructure projects, like the building of hospitals as well as the Downtown line, which have resulted in the increased cost of construction. Will the PAP government promise to keep to the budget of $60B instead of allowing it to balloon out of control, just like what happened to the YOG budget?

Measures to keep Housing Affordable

1. We are very confused by the various contradictory signals that the PAP ministers have sent within these few months:

1a. Late last year, Minister Mah Bow Tan claimed that housing was still affordable, and that the influx of immigrants was not a main factor causing the rise in resale prices. But now the Prime Minister has acknowledged that the influx of new immigrants has contributed to the rise in resale prices.

1b. When Minister Mah put up the first few measures in March 2010 to curb rising resale prices, some Singaporeans questioned the inadequacy of such measures. Minister Mah defended his ministry’s decision and said no other measures would be necessary. But just 5 months down the road, Minister Mah has introduced more drastic measures to curb property prices.

1c. In March 2010, Minister Mah claimed that the supply of flats was more than sufficient to meet any surge in demand. However it seems that his ministry must now go into overdrive to ramp up the supply of BTO flats.

1d. In March 2010, Minister Mah raised the minimum occupation period for resale flat owners who take bank loans from 1 year to 3 years. Barely a few months later, the ministry is now further pushing it up to 5 years. It seems that HDB is unable to provide any policy stability at all.

1e. On 26 June 2010, MM Lee said there probably isn’t any property bubble. But now, Minister Mah admits that a property bubble is in the making.

2. In December 2009, after admitting to being “caught off guard”, Minister Mah reassured us of the ministry’s ability to keep this problem of “unexpected” rise in property prices in check. Yet the contradictions as noted above clearly signal that his ministry continues to lose sight of the severity of the problem.

3. The latest drastic measures have caused unwarranted shocks to the whole system. Those who have based their purchases of HDB flats or private properties on the past policies will face great financial losses. The frequent policy changes will erode investor’s confidence in the government’s competency in dealing with such problems.

4. As long as there isn’t any fundamental change in the pricing mechanism of new HDB flats and the increasing demand of new migrants (Permanent Residents) is not effectively met by other means, we do not see how prices for both new and resale HDB flats can become affordable. NSP reiterates our stand that new HDB flats should be sold at cost price to citizens. HDB should also consider selling new flats to PR at market price so to ease the demand due to unusual increase in PR population.

Immigration Policy

1. We do not think that the Prime Minister understands the real problems caused by the huge influx of foreign labour on the ground.

2. PM Lee has raised the example of coffeeshop owners unable to find Singaporeans who are willing to work until 12a.m. and thus they need to employ foreign workers. But the truth is, to ask workers to work 14 hours or more in a day is an act of exploitation. The labour law should be applied equally on both local and foreign workers. We cannot allow employers to exploit foreign workers just because Singapore workers are unwilling to be exploited.

3. We also notice that there are firms putting up recruitment advertisement which discriminate against either Singapore citizens or races. The liberal FT policy that the PAP government has adopted is partly to be blamed for this discrimination of local Singapore citizens by businesses. This practice has to be stopped and NSP urges the government to set up Commission of Equal Opportunity and setting laws to outlaw discriminatory employment practices.

4. PM Lee has ignored the severity of the depression of wages of both middle and lower income earners due to the influx of foreign labour. There is no mention of any concrete plans to deal with this problem.

5. PM Lee may think that foreign labour will help to create jobs for Singaporeans but the reverse is also true. Many Singaporeans’ jobs have been displaced by foreign labour. The problem is so severe that engineers and managers are now becoming taxi drivers. We have invested lots of money in the education of our citizens but such displacement of jobs of foreign labour has effectively made our investment wasted. Here again, there is no mention of any concrete plans to deal with this problem by PM Lee.

6. Raising workers’ levy alone will not help much in preventing engineers and professionals being displaced by foreign labour. Raising workers’ levy will not prevent exploitation of foreign workers nor save jobs for citizens.

7. Last but not least, this liberal immigration policy has caused a serious problem of income disparity within our society. Wages of both middle and lower income earners have been depressed while some have basically lost their jobs and face underemployment or even unemployment. The widening of income gap and the diminishing of middle class are great concerns to social stability but the Prime Minister has not addressed it either.

Conclusion

Although we feel that the Prime Minister has put up a very good pre-election National Day Rally speech but we still find that the solutions that his government has provided are generally inadequate.

We must bear in mind that all the problems and issues addressed by the Prime Minister are mostly the result of oversight by the various ministries under the charge of the respective ministers. All these problems are not new and have been raised by many people including NSP over the year. These problems could be long anticipated as it is the direct result of PAP government’s deliberate policy of opening the floodgates for foreign workers and migrants to come to Singapore. These “caught off guard” ministers should be responsible and made accountable for their deficiencies.

We also note that the Prime Minister did not resort to giving out goodies or red packets to citizens as a populist tactic to win support. We would be impressed if PAP decides to abandon its past undesirable election tactic and choose to contest the elections based on its policy views, ideas and plans instead. We would be even more impressed if PAP could put up the boundary report way before the impending general elections. It will open up a new era of healthy political competition and engagement for Singapore.

Mr.Goh, have you lost your marbles???

Were we really glad to hear the Prime Minister’s NDR speech? NO !!!

I for one felt terrible. He was defensive and in damage control mode – a general who is defeated and making up a last stand.

So kindly amend the opening line and rephrase it. I would prefer something like this: “We are sad to hear what the Prime Minister had to say in his National Day Rally speech when addressing the various key problems that we have been raising for the past one year.”

Just wondering if all the opposition can issue a kind of a ‘SHADOW’ COALITION statement to give greater impact?

there are always differences and there will be differences.
but, there can also exist like-mindedness against the adversary, that,i believe, will go a long way in winning the hearts and minds of voters.

to demonstrate any fruitful PROTEST against the incumbents, the OPPOSITION must be seen to be protesting one another.

VETERANS of the opposition should,by now, understand that humility,is the key to their sustained future and should share their experiences with the newcomers.
REAL LEADERS of people do not merely go on an ego trip;they believe in th opposite.

as things are, there already exist fear and uncertainties among the voters and the opposition should try to fend off such fears rather than unwittingly FAN such fears and confusions.THat,will only go to help the incumbents, one way or another.

i am speaking from the standpoint of a common singaporean and many singaporeans ,you can be assured, are like me.

let’s not let small things bother us or else, how could we be trusted to do big things for others?
MONEY(greed) in politics is one thing, ego and power another.
both are ‘STUMBLING BLOCKS’ if a leader or an aspring leader is not careful.

all said,i will go for OPPOSITION as i am utterly disappointed in the incumbents and more so,because i subscribe to REAL CHECKS AND ‘BALANCERS’(people who honestly ensure balances).

best wishes to all singaporeans who brave all odds to speak for ‘CHAMPION GRUMBLERS’ like me.
    GOD BLESS!

I agree with Thots & wat. The way the article is written, GMS has unwittingly made himself a hypocrite. One don’t have to be nice in order to be firm. If LHL’s speech is rated “very good”, where are the good parts? I cannot find any.

A good opposition is one who points out the flaws of the government as they are without sugar-coating – short and sharp, to the point. It is then the government’s responsibility to find solutions and amend because they are paid more than generously to do their job.

@Author: Goh Meng Seng (Secretary General)

We are glad to hear the Prime Minister addressing the various key problems that we have been raising for the past one year in his National Day Rally speech.

What is the purpose of Mr. Goh wanting to take credit for raising apparent issues? In the hope you are not thinking of gaining cheap political point.

However, at closer examination, we have the following key points to make:

$60 billion for MRT infrastructure over 10 years

    1. Where would the government get the funding of $60B from?

From commuters who used the MRT and infrastructure funds I suppose.

    2. Will the PAP government increase the GST to 10% or raise other taxes to get additional funding? Will the public transport fares increase to finance this expenditure?

Chances if the people return PAP as overwhelming majority government, the GST will most likely exceed the 10% since other countries already taxing their citizens more than that.

Future plan nobody will know exactly how it will pan out, there is no necessity to be overly rigid.

Mah Bow Tan is a bad guy but he has massive support among the people of Tampines.

    2. In December 2009, after admitting to being “caught off guard”, Minister Mah reassured us of the ministry’s ability to keep this problem of “unexpected” rise in property prices in check. Yet the contradictions as noted above clearly signal that his ministry continues to lose sight of the severity of the problem.

His ministry has come out with some solutions for the housing problems which may not be perfect but Mr. Goh do you have any thing to share in regards to the inadequacy of the PAP.

    3. The latest drastic measures have caused unwarranted shocks to the whole system. Those who have based their purchases of HDB flats or private properties on the past policies will face great financial losses. The frequent policy changes will erode investor’s confidence in the government’s competency in dealing with such problems.

All changes will affect people, some will gain other will lose. Do you have a perfect system where nobody will be a loser?

    4. As long as there isn’t any fundamental change in the pricing mechanism of new HDB flats and the increasing demand of new migrants (Permanent Residents) is not effectively met by
other means, we do not see how prices for both new and resale HDB flats can become affordable. NSP reiterates our stand that new HDB flats should be sold at cost price to citizens.
HDB should also consider selling new flats to PR at market price so to ease the demand due to unusual increase in PR population.

Surely Mr. Goh you cannot be serious in wanting to sell new flats to PR.
When you sell new flats at cost price which is very low, the existing owners of HDB flats will see their property prices plummet overnight. This will guarantee that if you form a government, you will be booted out faster than the PAP.

If flats are cheapen by your suggestion, people may not even willing to honor their bank loans. The only one that benefit is new home buyers who will make a windfall immediately after they are successful in getting a flat direct from HDB.

Please don’t be crazy by suggesting that we sell our flat to the PR. New flat need land to build, if there is land available it should be reserved for local. Are you suggesting that PR stays in new flat and the bulk of local people stays in old ones? Local people also cannot get to buy new flats for upgrading, you suggest PR to come in and compete in the queue. What nonsense?

    Immigration Policy

    1. We do not think that the Prime Minister understands the real problems caused by the huge influx of foreign labour on the ground.

If the PM does not understand the feeling on the ground why would he waste his time speaking about the issue during National Day Rally.

People willing to work overtime is not breaking the law. Do you mean you want to deprive anyone who is hardworking and want to earn more to have a better living?

Unless if you don’t pay overtime and make people work long hours then that is exploitation otherwise how can you say so.

Shouldn’t we keep the possibility of working overtime so that local also could benefit from it, they just have to be hard working.

Yes the unrelenting influx of foreign workers into this tiny island is extremely stressful for the population however you do not have any solid idea on how to deal with the lack of local workers that could be proportionally applicable for the needs of the industries.

You got to be really kidding to say that you want a commission of equal opportunity and what not to set laws, OMG, what is the purpose of having parliament when any tom dick or harry can implement law.

    4. PM Lee has ignored the severity of the depression of wages of both middle and lower income earners due to the influx of foreign labour.
There is no mention of any concrete plans to deal with this problem.

There are pro and con of depressed wages. It will mean the cost of doing business in Singapore is lowered resulting in things being sold more cheaply to the people.

    5. PM Lee may think that foreign labour will help to create jobs for Singaporeans but the reverse is also true. Many Singaporeans’ jobs have been displaced by foreign labour.
The problem is so severe that engineers and managers are now becoming taxi drivers. We have invested lots of money in the education of our citizens but such displacement
of jobs of foreign labour has effectively made our investment wasted. Here again, there is no mention of any concrete plans to deal with this problem by PM Lee.

Structural unemployment has been a long time issue in Singapore. Government suggestion to contain the issue is to help workers to upgrade. Though it is not very fruitful in yielding good jobs
for PMETS, it is something worthy to be tried out. Do you have a more comprehensive solution?

Please do not give your shoot from the hip type of solution. We need solutions that will really yield long term result.

    6. Raising workers’ levy alone will not help much in preventing engineers and professionals being displaced by foreign labour.
Raising workers’ levy will not prevent exploitation of foreign workers nor save jobs for citizens.

Increased levy may not be the ultimate solution, it is at least a stop gap measure. Are you suggesting that levy should not be increased at all?

    7. Last but not least, this liberal immigration policy has caused a serious problem of income disparity within our society. Wages of both middle and lower income earners have been depressed
while some have basically lost their jobs and face underemployment or even unemployment. The widening of income gap and the diminishing of middle class are great concerns to
social stability but the Prime Minister has not addressed it either.

You are right on this count. The policy of engaging foreigners to work in Singapore is to depressed our local salaries. This is the main backbone of engaging foreigners to depress local citizens
salary so that the cost of doing business is low and competitive.

This is the faster, better and cheaper policy that PAP adopted. They are disincline to highlight this issue unless the opposition could come up with solid figures to educate the public on how our salaries are depressed with the continuous inflow of foreign workers.

It will open up a new era of healthy political competition and engagement for Singapore.

Your conclusion seems to give the impression as if the government need to seek your approval rating to function. You are over rating yourself to the maximum.

Mind you that you are the opposition, if there is inadequacy in the current government policy, you should exploit on the inadequacy of the government and win. There is no need for you to tell the government how to impress you.

Instead of highlighting the flaws of the PM’s speech, you carry the PM onto your shoulder and praise him for making a good speech. LOL.

Since it is full of flaws and unimpressive, how do you account it to be a good speech? Maybe you are dreaming of someday you can be like PM Lee standing on the podium delivery your maiden prime minister’s speech the way he does it. It still a little early to dream.

paying compliments is just a gesture of courtesy. Besides, calling it a “good” speech, could also bear some element of sarcasm.

By highlighting antagonistic views, suggests that, the speech is as good as it gets, coming from the disillusioned speaker.

It’s not as if we didn’t know that the PM & his merry men (incl women) r quite detached from reality.

I’m just waiting to see how many credible candidates r going to stand for election in the coming GE.

NSP has a long way to learn to stay relevant in politics.

Why has NSP taken so many days to react to PM LHL’s speech ?

Any reaction to the event has to be spontaneous – with some degree of immediacy – so as to be relevant.

If I have misunderstood these people, please explain to the people, what have you achieved so far for the country, for Singapore and for the people!!! as you are taking such a good salaries, please justified your salaries. I have no questions about you taking big salaries if you are an asset to Singapore.

I always do not know what Goh Chok Tong is doing in the cabinet. Look around the whole world, there is no other countries with former-PMs or top leaders stay in the cabinet after stepping down, even Cuba, the very well respected leader, knows when to step back.

    To Mr. Goh Meng Seng

Sir, you are too polite and naive to be in politics. Your response to the PM’s NDR speech lack the cut and thrust needed. While you made your points (so did many of the TR readers in their comments), your solutions are not very credible (as pointed out by SilenceIsGolden: September 4, 2010 at 7:33 am). Further you had the opportunity to hear the very sharp and eloquent response from Chee Soon Juan.

Would the PAP be kind to you if you were Prime Minister and you made a similar below-par speech like Lee Hsien Loong did? They would have you against the wall and gone for the jugular.

Please do not pussyfoot. Be polite, be truthful and DO NOT GROVEL.

    the point is… GMS’ conclusion

“Although we feel that the Prime Minister has put up a very good pre-election National Day Rally speech but we still find that the solutions that his government has provided are generally inadequate”

why is there a need to conclude that it is a very good speech, when there was nothing really good about it. the opening statement of being glad to hear issues being tackled is more than enough… isn’t it?

Totally concur with your astute judgment and acumen in your fair opinion on Goh Meng Seng’s childishness.

Goh Meng Seng should realize that he is the leader of an opposition’s party and not a regular webblog’s commenter like us. He should have the thrust of an opposition and cut deep into his opponent weakness and exploit it.

He should condemn the speech as one that does not address the real concern of the people. He should say that the PM should come out with real solution for local citizens rather than offering pork barrel to distract people from the real issue. Take a leaf from any politician in America in the way they debate and you will realize Goh Meng Seng really fall short.

By praising the PM, it gives PAP supporters the opportunity to tell everyone that the opposition likes the PM speech, this run against the cause of the opposition.

Nobody is suggesting that Goh MS should start his comment with “I hate… I hate” as the nincompoop detracted. Goh MS could praise Lee’s pink shirt which is a neat reflection of Lee’s speech, a little sissy indeed, for that we have no comment. Why laud the speech which is nothing but astrotruffing and blurring the real concern? Lee is telling everybody he is going against the grain, he insists that his FT policy is right and he will in future do it with a twist. His idea of management of the situation is trying to be as opaque as possible so that you will not even know you are totally displaced in the future.

“Although we feel that the Prime Minister has put up a very good pre-election National Day Rally speech ……..” extract from Goh MS’s article. What is so good about the speech?????? I suppose Goh is referring to the goodies like $9000 for NS men to shut our mouth in the citizenship’s issue. Who does Goh refer to when he use the word “we”?? Is it NSP or the people opposing the PAP??? Mr. Goh is not talking about his own feeling but he is saying there is a gathering of people who also share his lame sentiment.

RDB, sorry but Goh Meng Seng is soliciting our votes in the coming elections. He aspires to represent us in Parliament and perhaps to greatness. And this shall be for a period of 5 years (1 term) at least. Do we want another sell-out like Chiam See Tong to do us in for another 5 years?

Better clear the slate from the onset. He is not lean and mean and worse, he does not seem to be hungry at the moment. At this rate, he will soon be running and crying to his papa.

I read about GMS in an earlier TR posting and was much moved by what he had done. If I am not incorrect, he sold his apartment to fund his election campaign and I cheered him on. My heart is still with him.

Yes, undoubtedly his article is a poor response to LHS’s NDR speech but that’s OK. He must take stock. Surely GMS is of sterner stuff. Good leaders come out fighting again and again. We would like to see the steel in him. Come on GMS, vindicate yourself!

Quoting Shakespeare : ‘There is a tide in the affairs of men, Which taken at the flood, leads on to fortune. Omitted, all the voyage of their life is bound in shallows and in miseries. On such a full sea are we now afloat. And we must take the current when it serves, or lose our ventures.’

    GSM must take the tide.

To all who think that the opposition should “cut and thrust” rather than engage with polite diplomacy, it is a fatal mistake.

Singapore’s general culture of deference will not be able to take the “absurdity” of an opposition member cutting and bombarding the PAP- GMS will lose credibility with the common folk and appear like another opposition wannabe. This is asian Singapore- not western USA!

Moreover, this cool-headed diplomacy will allow us to impartially examine the issues for the nation rather than encourage demagogues to pander and seduce us.

Don’t be so critical of GMS, he is not being paid millions of dollars to solve the problems, PM Lee and his cabinet of Ministars are.

What a bunch of foolish comments above.
Goh Meng Seng said he was glad to hear the problems of Singaporeans being addressed. He didnt say he liked the solution, the real content. It is just a polite introduction to the article.
Does it mean that when we are anti PAP every single sentence must be i hate i hate i hate i hate i hate? One dimensional nimcompoops comments.
The articel of GMS is excellent and points out very clearly the PM’s solutions are not real solutions to the dilemma faced by the average singaporean.

Goh Meng Seng should join the PAP and stop wasting time trying to be an opposition party candidate. Since PAP makes good speech, he should be joining them. Too bad he is not wanted by PAP otherwise he surely will be so happy to be with the good PAP.
