Response to PM Lee’s NDR 2010 speech

Dear PM Lee,

I refer to your National Day Rally speech televised live on 29 Oct 2010.

You said there is a trade off between high growth and the acceptance of more workers. However, we should not grow for growth’s sake but should seek prosperity instead. Many first world European cities do not resort to the mass importation of workers to sustain their strong economies and their high standards of living. There is no reason why we can’t be likewise.

You said the winning design of the Duxton plain site has led to it becoming one of the most sought after HDB projects in Singapore. In case you’re not aware, existing flats around the Duxton plain are also amongst the most sought after in Singapore. Nearly all record HDB transactions come from that area. So it begs the questions of whether Duxton Plain is most sought after because of a winning design or because of its location.

You said foreigner influx is not uncontrolled because we have dependency ratios and foreign worker levies. But having those measures in place does not guarantee that the control will be well functioning just as having drains doesn’t guarantee that floods will be well controlled.

You said Texas’ many immigrants contributed to its vibrancy as well as its cutting edge in medical research. There are many European countries that do not have as many immigrants and yet are also at the forefront of scientific research. You said Texas benefitted from immigration even as neighbouring states like California and Arizona have tightened up. But the per capita GDP of both California and Arizona are higher than that of Texas. So being open to immigrants did not make Texas better than California or Arizona.

You referred to Microsoft’s setting up of an office in Vancouver, Canada across from Redmond, USA as an example of how Canada has benefitted from liberal immigration policies and how the US has suffered from its strict policies. But what exactly are those benefits to Canada and those losses to the US? As far as employment of citizens in rich software development jobs is concerned, neither Canada nor the US will benefit because the bulk of those jobs are going to foreigners regardless of whether the office is in Canada or the US. The most tangible benefit therefore has to be the auxilliary services to these foreigners in terms of the sale of groceries, meals and other daily expenses. These are largely low value added jobs. So if our concern is on the high value added jobs that Microsoft offers, then it makes no difference whether the office is in Vancouver or Redmond.

You said we should cheer for our national sportsmen even if they are foreign born because when they win, the Majulah Singapura is played. When Ben Johnson won gold in 1988 and the Canadian national anthem was played, no doubt all Canadians cheered. But when Ben Johnson was subsequently found to have cheated and stripped of his Olympic Gold medal, it means all the cheering had been in vain. So playing the national anthem doesn’t automatically warrant cheering. Ultimately, the people must feel the legitimacy of the victory.

You said we have given $400 million to 400,000 workers on Workfare and that that’s a lot of money. But on average, each worker gets only $1,000, a pittance compared to SM Goh’s wife’s definition of peanuts.

You said we have 22,000 new flats coming along but we don’t have 22,000 new couples getting hitched every year. Nevertheless, there is a huge backlog of couples who are currently putting up at their parents’ homes because they hadn’t been able to secure a place of their own. If you add those backlogs, 22,000 many not be sufficient.

You referred to MM Lee’s generation of leaders as the founding fathers who built our nation. You are wrong. There is one and only one founding father of Singapore and that is Sir Stamford Raffles. Our nation did not suddenly spring up from nothing in 1965. Behind 1965 were many more years of toiling without which 1965 would not have been possible.

You said the people who came before MM Lee’s generation had separate loyalties to different countries. Are you saying that Lim Bo Seng who died for Singapore while fighting the Japanese had no loyalty to Singapore? While Lim Bo Seng fought the Japanese, your father worked for them instead. Now, as we celebrate national day, Lim Bo Seng is all but forgotten but your father has become the ‘founding father’. We should not whitewash the contributions of the Singapore pioneers who came before MM Lee. If the conceiving and championing of a Malayan identity is an important contribution of the so-called ‘founding fathers’, then it seems odd that our first Chief Minister, Mr David Marshall was not even mentioned at all. There was hardly any fight for independence as far as MM Lee and his comrades are concerned. No blood was shed by him or his comrades. Also, there is no fighting of ‘communists’ as far as the term ‘communist’ is concerned. Even until today, even after locking them up and robbing them of their most fruitful years of their lives, we still have not been able to prove beyond reasonable doubt that they had been ‘communists’. Yet we continue to label them as ‘communists’.

So it is important to not just remember our founding fathers properly but to recognise that they span many generations stretching all the way back to 1819.

Ng Kok Lim

It is actually alright to work for the Japanese government at that time. People do need to survive. What cannot be forgiven is that LKY and President Nathan worked for the Kempetei, the dreaded Japanese secret police who were behind almost all the war atrocities.

Even today Nathn tries to hoodwink us by saying that he worked for the Japanese civil police. There is no such thing! There was only the Japanese army here and they were the police.

These two, LKT and Nathan worked as interpreters, a largely clandestine effort in those days.

We will never forget and we will never forgive. It is time we reclaimed our country and vote out the PAP before more damage is done to our country.

Ng Kok Lim, you really write well. A very provocative line of thoughts that could drown PM Lee’s National day 3 hours speech which lacks substance in depth and breath. Nowadays, the National day rally speech turned into a 3 hours self-assessment scorecard and self-praise platform. Over the last 10 years, the entire National parade and rally seems to choreography around PAP = Singapore. The entire PAP political party has totally forgotten who builds and makes Singapore as a country; it’s not PAP alone…it’s our forefathers and not LKY alone. And I totally agree with Kok Lim’s comment that the founding Father of Singapore is Sir Stamford Raffles as taught in our history book unless MOE wants to rewrite our history book. Let’s be clear about who’s our founding father first.

It’s good that these truths come out. It’s no wonder that many Singaporeans do not know that LKY and Nathan were turncoats during the Japanese occupation when our fathers and grandfather’s were fighting for Singapore. LKY and his croneys have successfully hidden the truth by controlling the media, but the truth in the end is still the truth and will get out.

More Singaporeans need to know this and stop believing that Singapore was a wasteland and LKY single-handedly built it up.

All he did was subjugate Singaporeans with high debt and a cost of living. With the billions they’ve siphoned from us and the small size of this island (not to mention it’s fantastic geographical location), of course Singapore can be polished to shine like it is. Off all our sweat and sacrifices though.

However only LKY and the PAP are claiming full credit for this.

Very well written. The two Lees are very good liars and storytellers indeed. The good thing is that Singapore did not end up like North Korea in an economic sense. That is where the two Lees have used their story-telling, history twisting skills to great use. They are so good at talking cock that the world believes they did a good job although everyone knows Singapore has an autocratic government. Unlike Kim Jong-il who enjoys detonating nuclear bombs to show his anger, we have the Lees who excel at bullshitting people. They have lots of nice stories for entertaining VIPs, foreign ministers, CEOs and all the rich and powerful people. Its not an option for them right? So shall they speak the truth? Detonate a nuclear bomb? Humiliate themselves and shut down PAP? Of course not. Just carry on the bullshitting as long as Singapore does not end up like North Korea. Its no wonder all our top civil servants are like-minded. All those who managed to raise through the ranks are highly skilled bullshitters, storytellers and backstabbers. MM Lee does not need straight talking doctors, lawyers, engineers or accountants who are highly skillful but blunt. He needs more ballcarriers and running dogs, especially dogs who can sing and dance to his tune.

Historians may say that William farquhar is the real founding father. Raffles came and signed a treaty then left. he came back only to visit two more times. It was Farquhar that planned, executed and governed the city making it work, laying the foundation for a modern and prosperous city.

As for Lim Bo Seng, he considered himself a Chinese national, but that was immaterial because back then Singapore was not a nation and Japan was a common enemy regardless whether you are a chinese in Singapore, Malaya or China.

    Sad Singaporean:

In the straits times today one reader said it very well:

The measures to curb property esclation, transport congestion and the influx of foreigners appear to be knee jerk reactions rather than well planned measures. The Govt is in the best position to plan ahead with information from statistics on population numbers availabilty of accommodations, number of commuters the system can take, number of vacancies in schools and such. It should be able to regulate the inflow of foreigners without causing a sudden crunch on our infrastructure, jobs and social stability. All these problems arose over the years because of a LACK OF FORESIGHT AND SWIFT RESPONSE”

Yet we have all the propaganda in the PAP controlled media and highly paid salaries of MPs justifying their existence and changing the voting and electoral boundary and system such as GRC and harsh reality of punishing and discrediting the constructive views of opposing members. This is Singapore and the voters in Singaporea are either sleeping, given up or the spirit is dead in Singapore. What have we gain economically when the spirit and identity as a Singaporean is dead. There is no point reviving it with the National Day parade or YOG. It is dead?

Even the late Lord Selkirk did not want anything to do with your plan. The late William Goode also opposed your political manipulation of the ISC. Reading “A Nation Cheated” by CSJ and “Comet In Our Sky” blew away all respect for the man. FYI, “Comet” was written by a British historian with no interest in Singapore politics, and was merely an academic exercise. CSJ quoted that book liberally too. According to information about LKY from Wikipedia –

“During the occupation, he operated a successful black market business selling tapioca-based glue called Stikfas.[8] Having taken Chinese and Japanese lessons since 1942, he was able to find work transcribing Allied wire reports for the Japanese, as well as being the English language editor on the Japanese Hodobu (報道部 — an information or propaganda department) from 1943 to 1944.”
    [See Ref #1 below]

Black market operation, interpreting Allied wire reports for the Japanese, English language editor of a Japanese newspaper recognised as an extension of the Japanese Propaganda Department.
    *
    *
In the 2005 Singapore Presidential Election, the approved nomination list being trimmed to one candidate – that of S.R. Nathan, which led to a public outcry that was reported by Asia Press Service.

“Expressing shock at the government’s rejection of Mr Kuan’s bid, the SPF argued that “if the incumbent, despite his poor performance and his alleged connections with the Japanese Kempeitai during World War II, is allowed to run for the Presidential Election, there is no reason for a more qualified candidate like Mr Kuan to be denied the ‘Certificate of Eligibility’”. ”
    [See Reference #2 below]

Since APS was not taken to task for the report, one can safely conclude that the report about Nathan’s association with the hated Japanese Kempeitai must be true.
    *
    *
From the book – ‘The Fajar Generation’ – information from the Colonial Archives allow one to also noted that in the politics of the 1950s, LKY had made numerous efforts to engage the Colonial Government in Singapore to exercise their powers of detention, and get the Special Branch – (equivalent to the present day Internal Security Department) – to arrest the Left Wing members of the PAP.

It is obvious that his familiarity with the brutality of the Japanese during WW-2 had guided his instincts to use the same methods to deal with political dissidents and detractors.

It is not a surprise that S.R.Nathan was the choice to head the Internal Security Department for all his working life – as he had the experience working with the hated Japanese Kempeitai.

I definitely agree about the Sir Stamford Raffles, Lim Bo Seng and David Marshall parts. LKY definitely comes way after these 3 people who have given so much to Singapore. Every single of the 3 people have contributed much more to Singapore than the current leaders we currently have.

he is overstating how many “immigrants” are there in texas. I rather see numbers in comparison to SG, instead of listening to this random comparison. rubbish.

WOW! this is the most interesting article and remarks I have ever read… LKY and nathan as traitors, who are partly responsible for 50,000 deaths… my god and how did they even manage to become who they are today. People wake up!

  • My only response is that anyone who thinks Sir Stamford Raffles founded Singapore is sadly deluded. In 1819, he negotiated the rights to set up a trading post on Singapore island. Singapore had 500 years of history as a trading outpost and port before that. It was John Crawfurd (Governor of Singapore 1823-1826) who obtained the rights to Singapore as a British colony.

However, Raffles had the political clout to tarnish William Farquhar’s name and establish his own reputation as founder of Singapore. The main lesson to learn is that messing with political clout, even if you are right, is a thankless task.

    This is a propapanda.

Lee KY is the savior of Singapore. The founder and the greatest politician in the world.

He is honest, generous, kind, caring and loving leader. We owe him a lot. Without him without today’s Singapore.

    Don’t be ungrateful.

  • Abuluski - Taxi Driver:

Quote from PM “If you are a taxi driver and somebody comes into your taxi and speaks with a Chinese mainland accent, show him around, tell him where to go, he may already know if he’s here some time but show him to the right place”

Read this message and took a chinese tourist for a ride and show him around, and then what happen??? he complain to my company!!!! why?? he complain I overcharge him and took a much longer ride!!! of course it cost more as I took him to all the attractions in Singapore and its past midnight so extra charge!!!

Then next day, 1 chinese lady passenger ask me where she can find places where she can feel at home, so I thought why not show her where to go – bring her to geylang to be with fellow PRC – knn complain also…. I literally take advice from our PM but see what did I get????

Serious?! You guys didn’t know?! The Old Man had written about his involvement in his bloody memoirs for crying out loud! Of course he glossed over it but come on. It is no revelation. I guess it brings new meaning to ‘hiding in plain sight’.

But to be fair to the guy, what choice did he have? He was no Lim Bo Seng, he was no Gandhi or Mandela. He was just a young kid whom the Japs could have killed had he not played ball. HE did what he had to do to save his skin. We would have done the same. I just wish our education system was honest about his involvement instead of hiding it but what did you expect? Old Man to come out and say ‘hey by the way I was a war collaborator for the Japs?’. He’d have lost every election.

It’s our fault for not asking the right questions.

Singapore is often hit by lightning strike. Maybe god send lightning to strike these whiter than white pigs for oppressing his people.

Ahh! Now we know why Old Man is still alive. It’s Heaven’s will! Heaven is waiting for this Old Man’s dirty doing to be known to all S’poreans before bringing him to Hell to be punished.

If he had died earlier, MANY of us would then be forever conned to believe he’s the founding papa of SG liao!

Actually LKY is an opportunist. Nevertheless he has contributed to Sg but sad to say that our country is spinning downwards due to the government incompetence. How?

These are all very salient points but I doubt the authorities would see this article, let alone care to reply to Mr Ng. We can only hope someone from the opposition would polish these statements and bring them up in parliamentary debates.
