Netizens want Lee Kuan Yew to retire from politics

Following the demise of Madam Kwa Geok Choo, the wife of PAP strongman Lee Kuan Yew yesterday at 89 years old of age, calls for the octagenarian Lee to retire from politics are rising among netizens.

Lee is currently hospitalized in the Singapore General Hospital for a chest infection after he returned from a trip to Russia, Ukraine and France. He has not been discharged yet.

Though Lee admits he is not doing much work lately excepting doing “forecasting”, he still draws an annual salary in excess of $3 million dollars, much to the chagrin of Singaporeans.

With the passing of his long-time companion, some netizens are of the view that he should retire from politics and get a well deserved rest as well after his many years in service of the nation.

One concerned Singaporean sent an email to Lee and his son Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong urging the octagenarian to step down:

“I hope you (Lee) are magnanimous enough to face the reality (and not in denial) that you no longer are the man you were, and step down gracefully so that another capable man/woman is able to serve the needs of the constituents. You need not be an MP or in the cabinet to be able to contribute,” he wrote.

Rohaizad wrote on TR Facebook:

“He should just retire, enjoy what left of family life. His wife departure is definitely an awakening that will make him focus on other things in life like family. I mean, at this stage, what more does he want?”

Melvin Chong remarked sarcastically:

“Why should he be wasting millions of taxpayers money by simply forecasting and talking rubbish ? Any fortune-teller on the street can do the same for 1/30000000 of his salary.”

While we express our sincere condolences to Lee and his family, we sincerely implore Lee to consider the wishes of young Singaporeans and retire from politics altogether so that he can enjoy life and do the things he has always wanted to do such as touring the world (using his own money and not taxpayers’)

I think he’s too power hungry, that’s why he doesn’t want to retire.

If he wasn’t power hungry, he would probably have retired in the 80s or 90s.

  • He wants to die in office, isn’t it?

This must be his only honourable last wish and hope in life as an elderly statesman after spending a lifetime to govern red dot.

He has not spoken about it publicly as his last wish, isn’t it?

Can we fault him for holding on to office?

The problem with most Singaporeans is not him in office but more about his $3m pay.

To quieten this disquiet, if he were to return the money at each payday to the State or donate it in full to charity, will Singaporeans still have an issue with his MM’s role and his staying on in Cabinet until his last breath?

I hope TR will encourage all to express their views on this.

It’s time to step down when you still have some love left from Singaporeans.
It’s shows that even his own PM son does not dare to remove him from all that power.
Your wife is gone….do you really want to see your nation and party go too!!!

  • Lets forget about the money part. He has given and so he shall receive.
The important thing that seems to drive MM is POWER.
He has been so used to it all these years. it will be hard to let go.
And I suspect he is NOT convinced the present administation is able to withstand the problems of the day.

Anyone with a serious health issue must NOT be in politics or gracefully retire from politics. If he or she does not last due to health failure, it is ALL the voting constituents who suffered the most. All lives are finite, but society’s interest lives on in perpetuity.

BE FAIR TO ALL. When time comes knocking louder and louder, one should just walk off the stage.

Let Minister Mentor Lee Kuan Yew continues in politics and government, and God’s willing, let him die in office and then let history of Modern Singapore judge him whether he was a good leader or bad leader (just like the former PM of Malaysia Dr Mahathir who is now in hospital in Australia and the history of Modern Malaysia has already judged him as a bad and corrupted leader during his 22 years as PM of Malaysia, so wss his successor former PM Badawi or also known as Pak Lah).

We as Ordinary Singaporeans must always remain constructive and objective and not be mislead by our Opposition parties who are all out to turn our Modern Singapore upside down and they just simply want to dismantle everything the PAP did our Modern Singapore’s independence which is not correct (not everything the PAP did, are bad and must be dismantled at all costs) and a very good one is abolishing the Death Sentence for Drugs Traffickers and we saw how a so called human rights lawyer Ravi went all out to champion for the Malaysian drugs trafficker Yong from Sabah, and he succeded and his appeal is pending. This scum Yong must not be shown any mercy (he already exhausted all his appeals) and I bet come next General Election, this Ravi will stand as a candidate for one of the Opposition party and I think most probably is The Reform Party. He failed to think what he did was not good and simply want to make the PAP goverment look bad without realising also making a laughing stock for our Modern Singapore and definitely weakens her firm stand on drugs trafficking, inshort our Modern Singapore is a weak country so is the government of the day.

I am just writing as I see things as an Ordinary Singaporean and I am no PAP ass, cock or boot licker and I am all for a two party system in our Modern Singapore which has yet to give birth again to this two party system (our neighbour Malaysia whom we gained our independence has a two party system after their March 2008 General Election and the opposition parties under Anwar Ibrahim, denied the ruling BN-UMNO a two third majority)

Last Friday, I was having drinks with some buddies and they botch on the subject that LKY would have to step down on the demised of his beloved spouse. Not sure whether it is true, I was told that by those drinking buddies that it was gazetted in the Constitution concerning Cabinet Members of Parliament that they have to relinquish their post in the demise of their spouse.

Any one familiar with Singapore Constitution would like to comment.

Anyway, I think it is time for LKY to take a long deserved break. Even not being a member of the Cabinet, he can still tutor his son as a concerned father and citizen. At his age, he definitely does not need that kind of money, but why still grapple for power and money.

Yes, absolutely!!!! LKY should retire graciously, he is no longer young and he unable to handle heavy workload and responsibilities like he used to be. Nowadays, the work require is definitely different from what LKY doing back in 1970, as his son LHL said “CBF – Cheaper, Better, Faster”, So why paying an annual salary exceed $3 million for an old man doing only “Forecasting”, which is not cheap and better, the speed of an old man is not faster either.
Why Singapore government pays $3 million dollars for a old truck, when they can get a Ferrari instead, which runs faster and perform better.

Perhaps, let Minister Mentor Lee Kuan Yew tastes his first defeat in the coming General Election ie if the Singapore opposition parties are able to put up an outstanding GRC team in Tanjung Pagar (we have seen how former leaders being defeated in General Elections in other countries and some were charged by the new government of the day in Court for abuse of power and corrupted practisces).

Let us as Ordinary Singaporeans remain focus, objective and watch and come next General Election, let us vote wisely and ask ourselves whether the PAP or Opposition parties deserve our votes or will there be a third foce who will emerge and deserve our votes.

Can PM LHL ever be his “own man” with his father mentoring his work as a Minister Mentor ?

The time since General Election 2006 was wasted, when PM LHL could not or would not dare to be his “own man” as he claimed, when stepping up to takeover the PM’s chair.

It is pathetic that Singapore’s future cannot be depended on anyone except with the PAP, or someone associated with LKY.

At age 87 and without his “soul mate” around to inspire himself, it is unlikely that MM LKY can help PM LHL to remake Singapore, or leave any viable institutional forms that will serve as a legacy to allow a MATURE and POSITIVE POLITICS to exist in Singapore.

Mr Lee continues to assume a very pivotal role in Singapore-I am sure many would be rather uncertain about Singapore’s future if he were to step down-and no this is not an expression of doubt about the current Singapore’s government abilities. I deeply revere MM Lee for all that he has done to pave Singapore away. And I believe that he still needs to be around to guide the younger generation-with his valued experience and knowledge. He remains a representative figure or symbol for Singapore and commands much respect from other rulers-hence he continues to play an important role in maintaining excellent ties between countries.

And really, do exercise discretion. It is a death we should be mourning about-some of the above comments are very insensitive by wielding threats about death doesn’t add any strength to your points.

We should not be insensitive at this particular time when he is mourning the death of his beloved life companion and wife and also when he himself is unwell and hospitalized. He has to be a parliamentarian to give his views, inputs and advice to the Cabinet. He does not need the money and he is certainly not in it for money, I am sure. The major, if not the entire portion of his salary, I suspect, is given to the many endowments, charities and scholarship funds close to his heart.

He has his failings (as he himself has acknowledged) and so do we. Let us be forgiving and magnanimous to the man who made Singapore what it is today.

@ Andrew Quah – as another ordinary Singaporean, I totally disagree with your statement above – I quote

“not be mislead by our Opposition parties who are all out to turn our Modern Singapore upside down and they just simply want to dismantle everything the PAP did our Modern Singapore’s independence which is not correct”

The opposition has many changes in their mind, you just quoted one. While I personally is neutral on the one you quoted, I’m very much in favours of the many changes they have in mind, which I know is good for me as an ordinary Singaporean. This includes their positions on immigration (opening the floodgate to foreigners, granting of PRs and citizenships), displacing and replacing Singaporeans’ employment with cheap labour, minimum wages policy, high cost of living, HDB, etc, etc.

From my personal view, voting opposition in this coming GE is the right thing to do – not just becuase of what MIW government has become over the last 10 years (causing all the problems faced by Singaporean over the last couple of years) but also making sure that there will be real and effective checks and balances in our parliament – ensuring that the government of the day is always accountable to the citizens.

Lee Kuan Yew is not just an old man doing forecasting. He is in the picture for his party, and for Singapore.

The main problem with the Lee Kuan Yew administration was that it did not put in place a credible team to succeed the Old Guards though it claimed so. Instead, Lee Kuan Yew continued to front the party and Singapore, particularly on the international level, even after the renewal of the Old Guards. The current team of ministers and MPs was assembled to facilitate PM Lee’s career, if anything. The key difference between Lee Kuan Yew & the Old Guards, and PM Lee & the new team is experience. It doesn’t take much to see that the current pool of ministers are in it for their career. Can they lead? Do they have what it takes to engage their peers at the international level? Does PM Lee have what it takes to lead his ministers to deliver sterling performance? I am afraid I have yet to see anything along those lines. All I have seen is Lee Kuan Yew engaging the world leaders and raising Singapore’s profile in an increasingly competitive world, while PM Lee and team, for lack of a better word, “fixes” problems back home, and problems they sure have.

If the Marina Barrage has to be MM Lee’s vision (and no, I am not validating this vision), and he a lawyer turned politician way past his prime, it says much about capabilities of PM Lee’s team. All we have seen from PM Lee’s team are excuses for this and that, nothing visionary. They are public administrators after all. Administration. Period.

Everything he has done has always been for the best of Singapore. I pray the day that Mr Lee passes on will not be soon because there is no one competent enough to take over his job. He is still strong in mind at least. Stop thinking that he should retire just because he is old. Put yourself in his shoes for once! Can you really bear to see something you spent your entire life building being taken over by someone less competent than yourself? I dare to say that if I was in his shoes, I would take the helm for as long as possible as I cannot see anyone better. Singaporeans would respect and admire him more if he were to retire after LHL became PM. Over the past 6 years since LHL took over from GCT, there have been serious gaffes and blunders from MM. The latest gaffe was during the Russian-Singapore seminar when he said that Singapore consists of Chinese and Indians.

Let’s face it. Although MM is still relatively alert and lucid, he has lost much of his previous mental agility and sharpness characteristic of him in his heydays. He should just retire gracefully and enjoy the things that he likes to do eg. reading, exercising and travelling (at his own expense) rather than be bogged down with meetings, official trips, talks, speeches etc.

His latest bout of chest infection was no doubt caused by his travel to Russia and France. Even though he travels first class and in style, long distance travel to temperate countries is stressful both on the mind and the body. With news of his wife’s death, the emotional and mental toll on him will certainly aggravate his medical condition. This could explain why he is still in hospital and not at his wife’s wake.

When LKY hand over the premiership to GCT, he said he will continue to participate in all future GE in order to help his PAP younger leaders win GE. That is why he come up with all kind of unfair tactics so that his party will rule Singapore forever. Sad to say, by doing so he actually hurt Singapore more than he hurt those who oppose his party. By hook or by crook he hit the opposition camp so hard that he actually discourage many humble and capable “Local Talent” from joining politic. Because he think he is onmiscience, he chose to become the director and producer. In the end it is Singapore and her subjects who is the biggest loser. Take a look at Japan LDP. Rule Japan for 44 years. The Japanese people think the LDP is the only party who is more capable to rule Japan but after 15 years of negative GDP growth decided to vote the LDP out. For his own sake he should retire gracefully and let the younger generation Singaporean decide their own future. Like it or not he cannot live forever to oversee this island. He have to “let go”.

Of course, LKY has done much for Singapore, that cannot be refuted without being unfair to him, but he has also clung to power instead of quitting while he is ahead like he should, creating first the title of Senior Minister and then Minister Mentor, all the while siphoning taxpayers’ money needlessly while being increasingly arrogant (in the words of Devan Nair) and making blunders of increasing number and severity.

In the words of classical musicians, ‘Con_te_partirò’ – or, in English – ‘Time to Say Goodbye’.

Home for her and two men, Mr Kamsani, 58, and another man in his 50s, is a two-metre-wide concrete pavement under a bridge on the Nicoll Highway along the Kallang River.

Miss Goh Jade Choo, 34, makes her bed on the pavement’s extension next to the river, which is just about 60cm wide. So do the men.

While we are thankful to MM Lee for building Singapore into what it is today, there is a time to let go. This whole Senior Minister and Minister Mentor roles are just titles made up to keep the old guard in power. What’s going to come after Minister Mentor when PM Lee retires and SM Goh gets ‘promoted’? MM Lee will probably come up with yet another title for himself… Minister Supremo? Nowhere else do you see retired politicians remaining in power after retirement, not even the President of the United States. Once they’re out, they’re out. Tony Blair, Bill Clinton. Margaret Thatcher, George Bush, etc. may still get a pension and consult from time to time, but they certainly don’t enjoy all the perks of the office they once held. Here Senior Ministers and above still draw salaries above US$1.5m and still get to travel first class on the taxpayer’s dime. IMHO, all our retired ministers should simply bow out gracefully and let the next generation of leaders, be they in PAP or the opposition, take over.

LKY may not be perfect but most Singaporeans will swear that we are damn lucky to have had him, me included. Even though I don’t agree with all his policies and methods, I still admire and respect him deeply. At the end of the day , this man delivered. It’s not all just hot air. It’s easy to talk and criticize. Everyone here can do it.
Human beings tend to take things for granted, Singaporeans included. If not for LKY, our country would not be what it is today. Is it Utopia? Maybe not but it is idealistic and naive to think that Utopia exist. Can the country improve or things done differently? Sure. There is always many ways to skin a cat. But one of the things I respect of LKY is that he works from the fundamental of doing good for the country. Not every policy that stems from that approach worked out but I would much rather this approach anytime .
As for retirement at his age, to be honest I am ambivalent. He has done much for the country and more than deserves the rest. But to have him continue to represent Singapore in the world, is a tremendous boost to our image. Travel and talk to foreigners and you will feel the admiration for the man and envy for us.
Talk to any PR in Singapore and you will find, I would bet, at least 80-90 % of them singing praises of him. Like I say , we take him for granted.

@godiswatchingu: I can say that what LKY has done from 1970 to 1990 were genrally great for Singapore and Singaporeans, except for his use of ISA against his political opponents as well as the court to “bankrupt” people that do not agree with him, politically.

After 1990, he did not do anything good – while he remind a senior stateman he has allowed and participated in many policies that marginalised Singaporeans – immigration policies, HDB policies, CPF policies, handling of TH and GIC, handling of GLCs.

Many here will agree that LKY, from the 1990 till today, still yielded huge influence in policy decisions – as such, he must be accountable to what has happened to most Singaporeans’ problems today – depressed income, high cost of living, high HDB pricing, CPF money being locked up, high medical cost and Medisave money cannot to use to pay for full amount of medical treatment, etc, etc!

Most native Singaporean knows exactly what is the real situation here – this is why the reactions to LKY are what you are reading here. Of course, you have asking PR and Foreigners, they may have a different view as they may not know the real situation and at the same time, a lot of the policies over the last 10 years are pro-foreigners and PR – it is quite natural you will hear good stuffs from them.

Wow, this is the current society we are in. We wish ill of people, and hope for the ‘best’ to happen. This is what Singaporeans are now. It’s barely a week Mdm Kwa has passed away, and here we have people regardless of sentiments and feelings. If you people think that you can do better, please, make action, don’t give rubbish and only hurl verbal comments.

I don’t believe in kicking a dog when its down. Some of you have behaved in the most appalling manner here. Where is your sense of compassion? Your humanity? Even if the person in question is the devil incarnate, 2 wrongs don’t make a right – show some respect for the dead for f**k’s sake.

Don’t get me wrong. The ruling party has not won my sympathy vote or anything. I am also rather irritated by the state media’s constant presentation of the late Mdm Kwa as “First Lady”. But there is a time and place for everything – what has politics have to do with the grief of an 87 year old codger?

To those malevolence spewing snarky buggers out there who just won’t give the old fart a break – you are no better than the object of your hate. Please don’t expect any sympathy when your turn comes – you don’t deserve it.

Why so much noise in here? Those of you who likes to sing good tunes about lky/pap you are in the wrong ktv room. This room is for Singers who want to express their feelings. Just like romance songs and hard rock don’t share the same emotion. Just my 2 cents opinion, LOL.

His one-time close pal, our ex-President the late Mr C V Devan Nair, advised him not to hang round the necks of the younger leaders (when Mr Goh was the PM) like the Albatross (Bird of Death) but let them put their brand on leadership. Like all dictators before him, LKY will not step down for fear of the ‘unknown’. He did not heed Mr Nair’s warning. Do you think he is going to listen to you?

He is a blardy greedy man who only wants power & money for his family. He destroyed many peoples & family lifes.
He is doomed to suffer with the remaining members of the LEE family & relatives of his wife & PAP members who has driven all the best people of Singapore out. Most of them have already migrated.
Let him pay for his sins.
The man above know what to do with him & his cronies.

VOTE PAP OUT TO KNOW THE TRUTH OF THIS TRAITOR including GCT the hypocrite.

We must bring back or allow all Singapore citizen back to Singapore. Although the PAP ruling of if you are away & have not return to Singapore in the last 10 years you loose your citizenship. This rule were made so that those who disagree with the Old fatt & this law was also mastermined by Gecko to deny the real story being told by people who was a treat to the Familee & PAP.
Will have to change many laws that was enacted to suite LKY/GCT & PAP. Let Toh Chin Chye & all the ex-PAP guys who were sidelined & ask to make way for younger people, while this arse hole hang on——we got to ask ourselves why is he holding on.
Lets get 2/3 majority & stand for as many GRC as possible …….then finally we may be able to get OUR CPF & many other perk back.
We need the citizen rule not PAP rules. Why do we need MM/SM/President without powers=yes man/ when their cronies leave to serve as ministers they create special title for them selves to stay in power & collect Millions of $$$$$.
This include Jayakumar/GCT/ & other MPs who are quitting & getting a place in GLCs & Companies under Temasek to collect Fat salaries –Kfels/Sembawang/SIA/F&N/SMRT/Banks/PUB/LTA etc.
Lets STOP them & do an audit. How to achieve this only way is to vote them out.

  • Alan Wong:

I feel he still has something to contribute[minus negative remarks about Malaysia which may be true are counterproductive and unhelpful especially at this stage since our relations with Malaysia are now much better. However, I agree his salary is certainly too astronomical as most would agree. He actually lives a fairly simple life and the money left behind[most or large proportion of it?]would pressumably be used for some charitable foundation? He would gain more political goodwill[seeing the irrational and emaotional venom being heaped on him by the usual recalcitrant Singaporeans]if he were to donate 90% of his present salary to the comminity chest and perhaps the other Ministers could also be encouraged to donate 50% to the Community Chest. Incidentally I have seen Singapore’s tremendous progress from 1965 when I commenced work until my retirement 10 years ago and altho this country is certaily not perfect and requires some tuning in terms of more ‘political’ freedom [not the complete freedom of western democracies]in the area of political expression[ie the use of libel laws against opposition figures which may be perfectly legal but are against the spirit of the law]and a doubling of the workfare payments to help the lowly paid workers, and a few other changes,I would not want to live in any other country in spite of the fact there are obviously countries with beautiful scenic spots[the Canadian Rockies,Switzerland, Austria Switzerland, etc]which are very attractive and which one is free to visit as tourists.

  • Let's Be Fair:

Admittedly the man does deserve our sympathy (or empathy) for having just lost a loved one of over seven decades.

But again some concerns raised are valid. Although we can accept that LKY has contributed a lot to raise Singapore up, he’s also reaped the benefits over the years, and given a choice, he’d do it again even with half the salary. It’s part of his nature. So while we acknowledge his efforts, I don’t think there’s a need for him to remain on the Cabinet (where else do you find an MM?). His influence on politics will still be greater than ordinary MPs even if he were divorced of a post, if it only be through Sunday lunches with Hsien Loong.
