Do the opposition parties have any alternative in ensuring Singapore’s survival, peace and prosperity?
In 2008, the SDP wrote their policy paper on National Service and suggested reducing NS from 2 years to 12 months and the span of a serviceman’s reservist training should not go beyond 30 years of age. In an interview with TOC on 20th Jan 2010, Tony Tan of Reform Party also highlighted that “in the long run, the SAF will have to rely on Navy, Airforce and selected Army troops, while focusing the bulk of NSmen for defense. When that happens, there would be significantly fewer operational skills for NS men to be trained and honed. The duration of full-time NS can be reduced to 12 months. Duration of in-camp training may be over the weekends with minimum or no disruption to their jobs”. Are these alternative policies proposed by the opposition parties feasible alternatives, since PAP has always claimed that the opposition parties cannot provide any alternative policy?
Based on information obtained from Wikipedia, in recent years, much has been made about the so-called “Revolution in Military Affairs”. The advent of precision technology has enabled targets to be hit by ships, aircraft and artillery with greater accuracy and lethality, thereby reducing collateral damage to civilian properties. Such technologies have been provened in the first Gulf War. Precision attacks against the Iraqi air force destroyed it in its hangars, and precipitated an attempted mass exodus of aircraft to Iran. Key precision weapon attacks against bridges also served to “channelize” the movement of Iraqi forces and create fatal bottlenecks, and many Iraqis, in frustration, simply abandoned their vehicles and walked away. Nor was the Gulf War an isolated example. From August 30 through September 14, 1995, for the first time in its history, NATO forces engaged in combat operations, against Bosnian Serbian forces in the former Yugoslavia. A total of 293 aircraft based at fifteen European locations and operating from three aircraft carriers flew 3,515 sorties in Operation Deliberate Force, to deter Serbian aggression. Somewhat less than 700 of these sorties targeted command and control, supporting lines of communication, direct and essential targets, fielded forces, and integrated air defenses. A total of 67 percent of all such targets engaged were destroyed; 14 percent experienced moderate to severe damage, 16 percent light damage, and only 3 percent were judged to have experienced no damage.
Hence, history has showed that it is possible that by leveraging on the new technologies, Singapore’s national interests can still be protected by shifting from the reliance on land maneuvering forces to its air and naval power, a strong artillery forces and a small land forces to deter, detect, delay or deny any external military attack on Singapore, even with a reduction of NS and defence budget. The advantages of shifting from the reliance on land maneuvering forces to air, naval and artillery forces to defend Singapore are as follows:
- Airforce, navy and artillery forces are less manpower intensive. Hence, defence spending and the period of national service can be reduced since less manpower are required.
2. Able to prevent the conflict from escalating into an all-out total war.
By relying on airforce, navy and artillery to destroy the adversary’s air, naval, artillery and armour support, command and control centres, and other key assets at the onset of war, the government of Singapore will be able to “force” the adversary into negotiation to protect its national interests even without launching the land maneuvering forces in the event of war.
- Able to withstand a longer war without straining the economy.
Since the conflict will be fought using the assets of the SAF, and lesser reliance on its manpower with the reliance on airforce and navy, less manpower will be required to be pulled out from the labour force for military service in the event of war. Moreover, with a strong airforce and navy, the trade routes of Singapore can be protected during wartime. Hence, this will serve to sustain the functioning of the economy during wartime.
- Enable SAF to fight a two front war.
Without the need to launch land offensive operations that require large manpower, tanks, armours, etc., and concentrating its manpower resources and assets on the airforce, navy and artillery, the SAF will be able to deter and deny any sea or airborne landing of hostile foreign troops in Singapore, even in the scenario of a two front war. Even if small units of hostile foreign troops managed to sneak into Singapore to conduct sabotage activities, the small army of the SAF maintained for homeland defence will be sufficient to deal with the small units of the adversaries.
5. Strengthen Singaporeans commitment to defend Singapore in the event of war. A defensive posture would also place Singapore in moral high ground in the opinions of the international community to solicit international support to defend the territorial integrity of Singapore.
With the reliance on strong land maneuvering forces as deterrence, the SAF has been organized to launch a preemptive strike. This requires the SAF soldiers, with more than 90% of its troops comprising of NSFs and NSmen, stand up, leave the homeland and charge against the adversary’s forces. As an attack on the adversary’s forces will pose greater risk to the lives of the SAF soldiers, there exists the risk that the SAF soldiers will be unwilling to risk their lives to attack the adversary in times of war. If large numbers of SAF soldiers refused to stand up, leave the homeland and charge against the adversary’s forces in times of war, the reliance on strong land maneuvering forces by the SAF to achieve a swift and decisive victory will fail.
With a small army focus on home defence and train mainly on defensive battles, it will reduce the risk posed to the lives of the SAF soldiers in defending Singapore, since they can be shield from the bombs and bullets in trenches, bunkers and buildings. Hence, this will encourage the SAF soldiers to defend Singapore, as the territorial integrity of Singapore and their homes are now threatened and there is no other way out but to fight for their own survival and the survival of their family. Moreover, a defensive posture of the army would place Singapore in moral high ground in the opinions of the populace and the international community and enable the Singapore government to solicit domestic and international support to defend the territorial integrity of Singapore. Furthermore, without a large land maneuvering forces to conquer territories, it removes the risk of Singapore going to war with our neighbours because of the personal ambition of any politician, groups of politicians or generals, in the name of defending the country, and motivate the political and military elites to love our neighbours as ourselves. As Sun Tzu said, “War is a matter of life and death. A road to prosperity or to ruin. It should on no account be trifle with.” Moreover, Sun Tzu also said that “To fight and conquer is not supreme excellence. Supreme Excellence means to conquer your enemy without fighting.” Ultimately, “War is not about who is right, but who is left.”
With a shift of emphasis on a strong land maneuvering forces to a strong airforce, navy and artillery forces as a deterrent force, less manpower will be required for the military defence of Singapore, as the latters are less manpower intensive compared to land maneuvering forces. With a reduction in manpower requirement in the SAF, the defence budget and the period of national service in Singapore can also be reduced, as less time and money will be required to train the national servicemen in defensive battles and in sending the SAF troops overseas for training because of the shortage of training area to conduct large-scale land maneuvering exercises. With more manpower released back to the economy, it also reduces the need of the economy for foreign talents, and hence, reduce the risk of reducing Singapore citizens to become slaves in the homeland they had been called to defend. Hence, contrary to what PAP has always claimed that the opposition parties are unable to provide good alternative policy, the SDP and Reform Party do provide good alternatives by proposing to reduce NS to 12- months. By reducing the period of NS, the defence spending can also be reduce since less manpower will be required, and more funds channeled to subsidize the costs of other public services like housing, education and healthcare. With the manpower that are required to defend the country release back to the economy, less foreign talents also will be required.
For years, due to the incompetency of the PAP, Singaporeans had been misled by the regular scholar generals and colonels in the SAF of the need for high defence spending and the need for Singaporeans to serve 2 years of national service and 10 ICTs to defend Singapore. Hence, it is time for Singaporeans to re-examine these assumptions by voting for the oppositions!

Besides defending the country against intruders and aggressors, having a conscripted army also serves the purpose of maintaining internals security in the event of internal strife. You can re-call a good number of able-bodied men, get them into barracks, control their movement, send them into the jungle and keep them off the streets. Anyone who doesn’t report, awol and detention. Once you are called up, you follow the commanders’ orders to the last letter.Isn’t it a good way to keep things under control. If students and those who are naughty try to protest here and there, send in the troops, push them back, beat them, fire into the air, surround them, cuffed them and detain them for good. Army is not only for fighting in wars, it can be used for suppression too. Remember what happened in Beijing at the gate of heavenly peace.

According to the data from Stockholm International Peace Research Institute, the defence spending of Singapore, Malaysia and Indonesia in the last 10 years (2000 – 2010) was:
(in millions of USD)
SG 68,914
MY 35,892
ID 43,802
Singapore has spent about 2X of Malaysia’s spending and 1.6X of Indonesia’s. We’re the one fueling an arms competition in the region. In my view, we have been over-defending ourselves. We should cut treaties with our neighbours to reduce defence spending altogether. I’m sure the money used to build up defence only helps to benefit the American arms suppliers. It does not benefit the citizens of the countries.

The Internet is PAPs greatest fear as they know they can run but can’t hide, people remember what they said and if they change their tune people just copy And paste to reflect their ways
Many countries fear the Internet as it had become a very effective communication platform that knows no boundaries or limits

Reform Party has also proposed reduction of NS to 12 mths, in steps.
With the advert of technologies, less manpower should be required.
This would also free manpower into our workforce, thus reduce foreign reliance (which was debatable in the first place)
Further, as electronics has matured and become much cheaper, spore spending on defense should have been reduced as well…why has it increased instead?

The money spend in defence for Singapore were largely channelled to ST group of companies, either Temasek or GIC related. If defence spending cut, that mean no income for Temasek and GIC, that would only both these two companies performance figures will not look good, do you think the GOV will cut spend on defence? The amount spend is to defence PAP to keep it remain in power.

IF these first world countries can change their top leaders; i.e.
1. Mr Obama in USA
2. Mr Cameron in Britain
3. Ms Gillard in Australia
4. Mr Key in New Zealand
without problem, Singapore certainly can also change her top leaders.
What is wrong to change a PM?

Western governments are usually favouring democracy which means the local citizens can vote for their next Prime Minister or President. However, Asian governments tend to go undemocratic ways, which means no elections (Communist states especially), ruled by military (Myanmar since 48 years ago), Vote-rigging (Philippines’ Arroyo one of them), Political murdering (Cambodia & Philippines’ Maguindanao Massacre), Brutal Suppression against dissident (Uzbekistan). Singapore is no exception to undemocratic ways. PAP can change the constituency boundary if the opposition votes are more than PAP’s.

Hi Spore Folks,
We should take all benefits (upgrading, gst rebates etc) PAP is giving out to us in the coming GE to “BUY OUR VOTES” afterall these benefits come from us, taxpayers’ monies.
Folks, BE SMART VOTERS, put yourselves in a win-win situation in this GE, keep the last OPPOSITIONS card with you, to fight for you in the event that PAP retract or fail to deliver. The Oppositions will stand up and fight for you.
Don’t be DAFT to trust/ give all to PAP who has failed to deliver its 2006 election manifesto and POOR PERFORMANCE TRACK RECORD for the past 5 years.
When PAP become majority for the next 5 years they can do anything they want and NOBODY can stop them if there is not enough Oppositions in the parliament.
Remember hard, take all the benefits PAP offers and continue to VOTE FOR ALL OPPOSITIONS. You will be in a win-win situation all the way.

National Service was first introduced in 1967 – just after the “Pro Alien Party” re-negotiated for Singapore to be released from its own ambitious plans to be merged as part of a larger Malaysia.
The NS scheme hurriedly implemented as the LKY Cabinet had barely escaped from being arrested in a coup de’ tat that was planned by an “ULTRA Malay Nationalist Group” within UMNO, but was prevented from being executed as the leaks allowed UK PM Harold Wilson to warn the Tunku to prevent such an event or UK will withdraw her forces protecting Malaysia from Indonesia’s President Sukarno Konfrontasi campaign.
NS in the 1960s and up to the mid-1970S was all about survival in a neighborhood with big boys wanting to swallow Singapore as their own prize catch.
After the mid-1970s, NSF took became a political tool for the “Pro Alien Party” –
Firstly, as a “stop-gap buffer” that absorbed the mass numbers of young Singaporean School Leavers entering the job market every year and bought time for the LKY Cabinet to plan policies without being haunted by the unemployed youths looking for jobs.
Secondly, with NSF – Singaporeans are subjected to Civilian Laws, as well as Military Laws as Reservists – and with NS being used as a tool which allow the “Pro Alien Party” to FIX youthful dissidents to special treatment through customised NS training.
This happened to Tan Wah Piow – (who was the President of the University of Singapore Students’ Union) – who was jailed on false charges of rioting in the PIEU premises [1], and on his release from Prison was drafted to serve in the Singapore Artillery – (then using the 120mm Motars that were man-packed during training).
NSF soldiers consumed a large National Budget to train a large population of Singapore Males – that are subsequently put to fallow, recalled for Reserve Training for up to two 5-Year Cycles, which subsequently see their 12 to 15 years of “intensive training” being wasted till they reach ages between 45 to 50 when released from NS obligations.
Singaporeans will need to question if the money circulated through the local defense industries – all Government Linked Companies – did not contribute to the “manufactured HIGH GDP numbers” – which the Cabinet formed by the “Pro Alien Party” had used as a measure of their performance, and justify the obscene annual remunerations and absurd bonuses paid to themselves and the Civil Service !!!

The most important in fighting a war is the resolute of the army (军心). In many ancient wars in China are fought and won on the basis of the morale of the army – even Sun Tsu had written about it in the Art of War.
A story of morale heard from T. Harv Erker from his recent seminar – the reason why Mongolians are so fierce and victorious in wars because they always bring their belongings and their families with them when they lined up in their battle lines during any confrontation.
Ask the PAP ministers where is our Army’s resolute now? Do we have the morale to fight and win a war? Male Singaporeans are asking “why do we fight?” to the SM already – we really have a very serious problem in our hands.

@Mick The reason why Singaporean males have such a bad social status in society is becos of NS which delays their time entering the workforce and the woman’s charter.
The same with Taiwan. Now Taiwan wising up, by 2013 if I remember from my Taiwan friend say, they are going to change their NS into a full volunteer army by progressively reducing the NS periods.
Why should we be forced to serve? Leave the defence of Singapore to those who care not Mainlanders who bully non-chinese. I got two Malay friends in NS kena takan by Mainlanders. Until I befriended them, they once thought that Singaporean Chinese are like this also now they know that we Singaporean Chinese are a completely different breed from those uncultured Communist bootlickers who do not know a thing about Chinese Culture.
