The WikiLeaks fallout: PAP getting a bitter taste of its own medicine?

As Singapore appears to be embroiled in a protracted diplomatic spat with its neighbors following a series of damning releases by WikiLeaks, one cannot helping wondering how a small country has become so maligned and vilified at least in the region after the United States of America.
The shocking releases of Singapore diplomats making unflattering remarks about Malaysia, Thailand, Japan and India by two Australian papers last Sunday was followed swiftly by another diplomatic cable leaked on WikiLeaks a few days later with PAP strongman Lee Kuan Yew calling Burma’s generals “stupid” and “dense” and expressing his reservations about Laos, Cambodia, Burma and Vietnam joining ASEAN.
Poor George Yeo must have a busy time of late trying to contain the damage from the diplomatic fallout.
It doesn’t matter if MFA comments on the leak, less so if they are really mere “gossip” and “cocktail talk” as Mr Yeo will want the world to believe. The fact remains that Singapore’s reputation has taking a battling with even the Japanese media giving extensive coverage on Tommy Koh’s remarks on them being a “big fat loser.”
Does it surprise us or anybody that our diplomats and leaders are capable of making the most callous, disrespectful and yes, undiplomatic comments about their purported friends and allies within diplomatic circles?
Singapore officials have acquired a reputation of being condescending and arrogant with a “superiority complex” over its neighbors, noted a Malaysian diplomat which is why Malaysia Foreign Minister Anifah Aman said quite frankly that he did not expect an apology from Singapore when he handed a protest note to the Singapore’s High Commissioner in Kuala Lumpur.
The “holier-than-thou” attitude displayed by our leaders has peeved off quite a number of countries over the years though they may not have expressed it explicitly out of courtesy, coupled with their propensity to sue the foreign media, doesn’t make them exactly popular among some countries in the region.
While Australia has maintained friendly ties with Singapore for a number of years, the same cannot be said of the Australia media whose coverage of Singapore is always less than favorable.
Nearly 1,000 cables were leaked by WikiLeaks exclusively to the two Australian papers – why did they choose to pick on Singapore only and not on others?
Consider the following headline carried on the Sydney Morning Herald:

Though the comments were made by Singapore diplomats, the Australian paper chose to shift the focus to Singapore’s leaders instead.
When PAP strongman Lee Kuan Yew visited Australia in 2007 to receive a honorary doctorate from Australia National University, he was ”welcomed” by some 150 placard-holding students protesting against the award and calling him a “dictator”. (source: smh)
An obviously peeved Lee later had a run-in with the waiting Australian journalists:
“If I allowed you to run my country, we would spiral down to rock bottom,” he ticked them off in his usual condescending tone.
Many years ago, when he was the Prime Minister of Singapore, Lee had run down Australia as the “white trash of Asia“, an insult which is still not forgotten by the Australians to this very day.
Had Singapore’s leaders shown more humility and respect to others, we may not find ourselves in such a predicament now. There are many ways the foreign media can “fix” us and there is no way our litigious PAP leaders can seek legal recourse.
Wait, let us not forget that the founder of WikiLeaks Julian Assange is an Australian too. We can expect more such damaging diplomatic cables from Singapore to be released and cooked up by the Australian press in the next few weeks ahead.

Most countries in the West have a dimmed view of Singapore, particularly in respect of its lack of political maturity and lack of freedom and respect for the individual.
Typically, the West usually tone down its disdain of Singapore when the West needs a foothold in South East Asia.

I think you’re right when you say that Australian media coverage of Singapore “is always less than favorable”, and that they seem to be picking on Singapore specifically. I think we need to ask, who are the gatekeepers in this release of confidential information? We know that Wikileaks passed the information on to SMH, which later published it. But so far things are one-sided. We do not know what other countries say about Singapore. Why? Because these ‘leaks’ simply haven’t been published. For all you know, Wikileaks never passed whatever controversial comments other countries might have said about Singapore on to SMH. Or Wikileaks may have done so, but SMH simply didn’t publish them. I wouldn’t be surprised if Malaysia, India, Japan, etc., said equally nasty things about Singapore. A newspaper with a certain agenda may simply screen the information it has, releasing or withholding certain information for a particular agenda. And then we have MPs in these countries calling on Singapore to explain such remarks when their own ambassadors might have said equally controversial things. We would never know, either because Wikileaks didn’t have that info, or had that info but didn’t pass on the info, or had the info and passed the info but the newspaper that received it didn’t pass it on.

WikiLeaks: Big trouble when truth becomes treason
The question that should be uppermost in the public’s mind is can they trust their governments to give them a straight and honest answer? If not, then WikiLeaks fills an indispensable role that ordinary journalists can never fill despite all their best efforts at giving us the news without fear or favour.
The leaked documents tell us what the politicians really think behind the diplomatic niceties and duplicitous misleading of their own citizens.
WikiLeaks is indispensable in a world where lying is considered patriotism and exposing the lie treachery. When governments paint it white when they think and act black, then we are all in serious danger of being misled and misinformed.
The leaks may seem unethical but how else can ordinary citizens get the truth when their governments misrepresent the facts?
So far in 2010, forty-two journalists have been killed and most of them were covering political and corruption cases. WikiLeaks in contrast is the repository of leaks from various whistleblowers that covers a wide range of topics in the public interest. Many journalists volunteer their services to the organization which does not solicit for leaks.
‘Without fear or favour’ is a cliché for many who bring us the news but WikiLeaks has proven it is not afraid to tread on big toes with promises to release corrupt business dealings even in Russia. No wonder some feel Julian Assange should be eliminated in a world of collapsed morals.

Having carefully read a transcript of the 1 September Seth Mydans interview with Lee Kuan Yew for the New York Times and International Herald Tribune, I haven’t been able to find where Lee calls Malaysia a “failed state”.
What he actually said when asked if he had any disappointments in his career was, “Well, first I regret having been turfed out of Malaysia. I think if the Tunku had kept us together, what we did in Singapore, had Malaysia accepted a multiracial base for their society, much of what we’ve achieved in Singapore would have been achieved in Malaysia. But not as much because it’s a much broader base.”
