Dumping the fallacies LKY created

Firstly, let me qualify that LKY did many good things for Singapore. He led a team of capable leaders to bring where Singapore is today. Any other man would have….well, done the same.

It is just that LKY has taken far, far more credit than he deserves. He is no god, nor deity, but just an ordinary man, who outwitted his adversaries. He was at the right place at the right time, and he capitalised those opportunities with shrewdness like a fox.

In other words, a lesser shrewd man would still have brought Singapore to where we are today, but taken much less credit for it.

Here are some of LKY’s propagated fallacies that need to be ditched.

Fallacy #1 – LKY was charismatic

Ha ha. Those of you who are old enough to remember Lim Chin Siong, will know what I am talking about. I myself was born after his era, but I managed to dig up some enlightening facts about this fiery man.

There was a documentary aired by Discovery Channel, on the history of Singapore. It was a series of documentaries actually, and the feud between Lim Chin Siong and Lee Kuan Yew was discussed.

In the 1950s, it was Lim Chin Siong who commanded the respect of the masses. LKY was well… just a spectator. What Lim could do, Lee could not. When Lim wanted the masses to demonstrate against the Brits, they did just that. With fiery speeches, he moved the masses. LKY was a Nobody, spelled with a capital “N”.

What tilted the favour for LKY was the merger. It was planned that the only way to get rid of Lim was for Singapore to merge with Malaysia, putting pressure on the Tunku to lock Lim up.

Lee played his cards well. Lee pretended to work for Lim’s release (the people’s leader) after the merger. But by then, the position of PM of (autonomous) Singapore, under Malaysia, was already filled – by LKY, of course.

So it is really by wit, using the merger as an alibi rather than charisma, that Lee was made the PM of Singapore.

In another parallel event, we were also told that LKY was made PM of Singapore by a single vote by the Party Chairman, Toh Chin Chye. Of course Lee now tries to deny that event happened – because he wants all the glory to himself (see: Old Man wants all the glory to himself).

It can be seen that it was due to his wit and shrewdness that he became PM. It hardly had anything to do with charisma, where he could move the masses on the ground, as what PAPpy would like us to believe.

Fallacy #2 – LKY led Singapore to prosperity even when we don’t have natural resources

That’s the perfect fairy-tale, isn’t it? It is not a lie that Singapore has no natural resources. It is that it is not the whole truth either.

Singaporeans are bombarded since schools that the great LKY brought Singapore to where it is today, even though we lack all the natural resources.

What we are not told is that all the infrastructure that was needed to run and govern the country, was already in place for LKY when he became PM.

When we broke off from the merger, we already had all the infrastructure. We had well-developed roads, hospitals, fire department service, the police, airport, sea ports, schools, judicial courts, the various statutes and laws, even our own currency, and most important of all, the various ministries and govt agencies needed to govern a country – including parliament itself.

Singapore was already a thriving city (thanks to the Brits) in its own right, and LKY simply took over what was already an established city with trade pacts and commercial deals in place, and all the other necessary systems in good working order.

It is not like he and his team brought Singapore from zero to hero. Yet, LKY, being the narcissist he is, makes it look like he was the Great Man who against all odds, pulled this tiny nation that has no natural resources and means, to where we are today.

Besides being overly narcissistic, he is also insulting all the other parties (including the citizens) who have contributed one way or another, to make Singapore a success.

Fallacy #3 – LKY managed to keep Singaporeans united in spite of race tensions -

This is LKY’s favourite. He likes to play the race card. He did it when Singapore was part of Malaysia, and he continued to do so decades after we broke off from the Federation.

Firstly, there were only two “race riots” where it involved the Chinese and Malays. Secondly, the Chinese were involved in more riots than the Malays. Thirdly, there were more riots in which the govt was the target, than there were riots where particular races were the target (see: History of Riots in Singapore – LKY’s racist version has to be stopped).

So why the emphasis that riots in Singapore has always been about race? Isn’t this just a fallacy perpetuated by LKY, so that you would believe that he was able to handle a highly explosive situation, hence, elevating his status as a “great leader”?

Fallacy #4 – “We were kicked out”

Really? In LKY’s eulogy (when Dr Goh Keng Swee passed away), he unwittingly let the cat out of the bag that it was the Singapore side who planned that we leave Malaysia – hence, putting to rest the lie that we were “kicked out” once and for all (see: Did LKY Lie We Were Kicked Out of Malaysia?).

Besides unwittingly admitting he lied we were kicked out, the above shows that Singapore leaders were well prepared to go alone. So all this talk that we were “left in the lurch suddenly to fend for ourselves” is just humbug.

Fallacy #5 – The Great (Malay) Bogeyman from the North and South is out to get us! -

I leave this to the last because this fallacy is one that has been played the longest. This myth has been played since the 1960s till today. That’s a good long half a century! (Hey, Old Man, move with the times!)

LKY and his PAPpy leaders have always said that our neighbours are out to attack us. They cite the tension during the Confrontation Period. But that issue was one Malay country (Indonesia) against another Malay country (Malaysia).

Indonesia was not too happy that Malaysia merged and assimilated Sabah and Sarawak. They saw it as Malaysia’s expansionist plan, right at the doorstep of Indonesia’s Kalimantan border. Singapore was targeted only because we were also part of Malaysia then.

However, LKY, the racist who always plays the race card, turned that Malay-Malay dispute into “a sea of Malays out to get us” scenario. With a magician’s sleight hand, he deceives Singaporeans into believing that the Bogeyman out there is trying to eat us.

When the Confrontation Period was over, LKY would of course need to whip up more bogeymen. So in came the argument that the North will threaten to cut off their water supply to us.

Hello, old man, who are you trying to fool? Isn’t it easier for Malaysia (and Indonesia) to just control their air and sea space to choke us? Every time a vessel or plane leaves or lands in Singapore, it somehow has to cross Indonesian or Malaysian air/sea space. All they have to do is to put up a high tax, or put up some security checks (in the guise of controlling terror) and all the best sea and air ports we have will be nothing but nice exhibits to look at.

With a high tax, we have to work hard to earn bucks, while their cash registers keep ringing endlessly. With stringent security checks, they not only slow down our operations, but also have an excuse to tax us for what they can say is needed to cover their security checks cost.

Cutting off water is an international crime which Malaysia would never do. But controlling air and sea space is legal. Yet, this Old Man tries to bluff Singaporeans about the water stuff. Hardy har har.

LKY has long known to be a racist. He played the race card in the 1960s and he is still playing it today, 50 years later.

Conclusion -

LKY is a shrewd politician. That, no one disputes. But when you say that he is a charismatic leader, one who could move the masses, that is hardly the truth. I am sure those from the Lim Chin Siong era will remember LKY as a wimp who stood by the sidelines, watching Chin Siong antagonizing the Brit govt with demonstrations after demonstrations, and riot after riot.

As for LKY’s never ending race card play, that’s about the only game he knows. He knows of no other way to play politics.

LKY is trying to deify himself before he dies. The hard truth about his book, The Hard Truth, is that in between the hard truths, there are hard lies embedded within.

Let’s stop believing his lies before he dies.

This is one person who knows manupulation and lies to get away from finger pointed! Back in the 80’s when the then President of Israel came to Singapore amidst the protest from the muslim countries, he says he was not told about his visit. So the fault lies with Dhanabalan who was the foreign minister. Next, when Devan Nair was accused of misbehaving while under the influence of alcohol, he openly said that he never knew Devan was a drinker! …despite the fact that both were together for a long time meeting in coffee shops and elsewhere.

With due respect to good writers like Solo Bear and others, i just wish that they don’t repeat the above disgusting sentence in their contributions(articles). Whatever good that people think LKY accomplished in Singapore was done through tyrannical, despotical and undemocratic means. In any other fair country his so called accomplishments would have been considered null and void. The exploitation of labour, the GINI coefficient, the complete disregard of citizens, with almost zero social welfare and the loss of billions of the nation’s monies, in any other democratic country would have put lky and his cronies behind bars. So what justifications have writers of articles in saying lky accomplished many good things when the actual good work in bringing up the nation was through the hard work of citizens and the leadership provided by other conscientious leaders besides the GOON lky who now wants to take all the credit. • LKY TOOK US FOR A RIDE:

I always have regrets when i visit Malaysia and reflect on the fact that i once was a Malaysian. This vast hinterland that includes Sabah and Sarawak, that Singapore was actually a part of, and that it actually belonged to us, as citizens of Malaysia. I always pondered on the reasons for the break up. Why were we kicked out ?

As more and more facts emerge, it is becoming obvious, that while Tunku and his team were negotiating with the 13 other states, and macro managing a difficult situation, that LKY and his team were only focussed on Singapore and what could they get. In the end, it did not work. LKY was a problem that Malaysia did not want. They did not arrest him or lock him up but aceded to the reality that LKY had the poular support of the Singaporeans and that, they wanted out. Tunku always was a gentleman, and he was not up to the constant conniving of LKY, and i suspect, he was happy to see the back of LKY.

Singaporeans have to live with the fact that we once were a part of Malaysia, and as a result of 50 years of propoganda and hatred in LKY, that we are today even furthur estranged from them than ever before. That we constantly are subjected, through the Singapore’s media, of negativity, in things Malaysia. We are told that we are lucky to not be part of this huge hinterland with massive resources. We ridicule the fact that their development is not as fast as ours without taking into account that they are a country and that we are a city state. That they have to spread development to a massive area and not just focus on KL.

Malaysia is still macro managing a big country and u seldom read about Singapore in their media. They have 13 states and are not fixated on Singapore, as Singapore is on Malaysia. They are progressing well and the country is growing from strength to strength. Singapore sprinted out of the gates and is today, slowly running out of steam. Malaysia is comfortable to pace themelves, fully aware they are running a marathon.

LKY’S adamance at being the sole unquestioning ruler of Singapore, which he intends, bequeating to his son, is the price Singaporeans are paying in that we are no longer a part of Malaysia. We are constantly being asked to sacrifice more and more and to work harder and harder, whilst he, his family and his ministers live comfortably and constantly preach how lucky we all are.

Today, we are having an FT issue, which has changed the entire deomograph of the Singaporean way of life. We are having doubts on the integrity, ability and credibility of the PAP. We have problems with our CPF and our HDB policies. We serve with the instinct of a running dog nation having to focus on the interest of our masters rather than on ourselves. Our nationalism has been dashed by racism in every facet of life. Even the majority Chinese today are discriminated against in the job market due to unfavourable FT and housing issues.

This compares against the strong sense of nationalism and a succesful multi cultural society in Malaysia with an open democratic system with freedom of expression. Politics is a part of the Malaysian way of life and opposition parties manage their own states without fear of draconian tactics and ruthless vengeance fom the ruling party. Malaysia has grown in every aspect of nationhood whereas in Singapore we are stuck in the pursuit of materialism and the acquisition of an HDB is the hallmark of success.

I wonder if it is wrong of me to question the wisdom of pulling out of Malaysia and whether that makes me a traitor to Singapore. But then, isnt the FT issue and the unrestrained handing out of PR and citizenship a traitorous action in itself. Can i not ponder on the reality of past decisions that could have avoided this anti nationalistic stance taken by our govt. The future is going to be the best judge of the conseqence of LKY’s decision. I am just beginning to seriously question the wisdom of not being a part of Malaysia and walking away from something that we were in fact, a part of.

I agree with Solo Bear. Singapore existed for 150 years under British rule before this slimy old man took over. Under British rule, many of the infrastructures were already in place such as the airbases of Tengah Air Base, Changi Airbase, Sembawang Air Base, Seletar Airport. But this old man gave the British no credit and instead claimed all the achievements.

This old man claimed too much credit for himself when all he does is to give 2 cents worth of nonsense in exchange for millions of dollars that he pays to himself. What a complete rip-off.

‘DUPLICITY’ the hallmark characteristic of LKY has been similarly indelibly stamped onto the “Pro Alien Party”.

LKY had dubiously introduced Lim Chin Siong – as ‘the FUTURE Prime Minister of Singapore’ [*1] – to David Marshall, who was then the Chief Minister of Self-Governing Singapore.

As subsequent events had borned itself out, this introduction was made to expertly conceal LKY’s own political ambitions with careful deceit – so as to lower Lim Chin Siong’s guard towards LKY.

In the book – ‘The Fajar Generation’ – it included the release of archived correspondences by Colonial Officers that had dealings with LKY; and who had documented the deceit and conspiracy in which LKY wished to appear as a hero to Singaporeans, while pushing to the British Colonial Officers to carry the burden of political responsibility to arrest LKY’s own political comrades – who were largely Left Wing politicians but not seen to be Communists in any way by the British Special Branch.

<strong'Political Deceit' has been the strong suit of LKY, which even his political peers in the British Colonial Government and in the Malaysian Federal Government had similarly said about him:

Lord Selkirk wrote:- “Lee was in a very overwrought state. I do not know what a psychologist would make of him, but he seemed to be a bully who was frightened and still wanted to pretend he could bully other people” (CO 1030 / 1149). [*2]

“Lee Kuan Yew (Prime Minister of Singapore) is unashamedly exploiting the delay in the establishment of Malaysia to further his personal ambitions. Political blackmail or ‘brinkmanship’ (as described to me himself) is his normal method of achieving his ends. While expressing enthusiasm for Malaysia, his objective is to show up the Tunku as feeble and wooly minded and to build up his own reputation as a tough, clear sighted leader(DO 169/287). [*3]

“Out of chaos and trouble, Lee hoped to emerge as the leader sho could save the country.”

“He was a great expert in creating situations which did not exist.”

“Mr Lee twisted facts and cast doubts in the minds of people.”

“Like a frog in a big lake, he was croaking to show his presence and be heard”

    (Straits Times, 4 June 1965) [*4]

    .
    .
It is not a surprise that Dr Lim Hock Siew called LKY ‘a political coward’ in his speech documented in a Martyn See movie that was banned but went viral on YouTube. [*5]

If Confucianism honorable traits in meritocracy is to be followed, LKY and his “Pro Alien Party” will fail in such dismal fashion to be true followers.

They have instead abused Confucianism by adopting selectively the Principles that will benefit their own political position, while expecting the citizenry to follow clearly the distinctions between the Rulers and the Ruled.

Clearly, ‘DUPLICITY’ is the strong suit that is heavily depended by LKY and his “Pro Alien Party” to remain politically relevant into the future.

I believe one of the answers is to enslave the people or at least majority of the people. Imagine all the people independent & financially self sufficient. Every single policy they draw out will be challenge & debate by the people. They have to work even harder , manage better , more accountability & more result oriented. Therefore, suppress of opposition is necessary so that the people will not have leverage against them. I think “leverage” is what we really need.

Is it not a fact the MM had done many good things for Singapore? People can continue to twist the facts in any form but the fact still remains that Lee Kuan Yew was the PM during the tumultuous period of Singapore history when the world believed Singapore would not survive.

Survived, we did. We prospered actually. And will continue to be, under a competent and honest government.

While some people do not have feeling of guilt in washing away their parents’ sacrifices, it is comforting to know that most Singaporeans still hold high respect for the MM. In fact there were some people who would have preferred to vote for an opposition party but they told us that they would do so only after the MM passed away. This is more than ‘respect’, this is ‘filial piety’! It showed the MM holds a place in the nation’s affections.

Since people in their early 30s, late 20s, are also aware of the MM’s great sacrifices and contributions for Singapore, we should encourage the younger generations to hold the MM as a high example in their serving of the nation. The MM’s books and speeches should be seen as light-house in an ocean, guiding our future generations in navigating through troubled waters.

LKY MISUSED this ISA in the most cruel and evil way onto the citizens who voted him into power.

In his so doing, he has effectively revealed the demonic nature in him.

At the same time, he desperately suppresses the population from speaking of his very evil act.

He does not seem to realise that (or pretends not to understand) such action of his over the years, has doubly confirmed that the most evil demonic spirit is dwelling in him.

For any normal individual who is ‘infested’ with this kind of spiritual disease, there are 2 options to stop the problem:

    (1) Like Adrian Lim, arrest him, through the legal proceeding, put him away.

    (2) Before he has commited the crime, exorcise him by a acompetent and very experienced priest in exorcism.

LKY is trying to deify himself before he dies.

The hard truth about his book, The Hard Truth, is that in between the hard truths, there are hard lies embedded within.

It’s interesting that we talk about LKY as God. I will always remember the biggest jolt came when I was sent to Saudi Arabia during the time when MM was touring Saudi and claiming that he was opening up Saudi for the Singapore Businessman (not true – it was SM Goh who made the first trip.)

The ONLY mention of his visit was in the English press (not the majority language of people in the region). It was a miniscule mention “Alwaleed meets Singapore’s YEW.” As far as the Saudi’s were concerned, an EX -American Ambassador was more significant. Then I came back to Singapore and there were headlines screaming about how MM TOLD THE SAUDI’s.

That really struck me. Our self appointed God is only worth anything in Singapore. The rest of the world can’t be bothered with him.

The most constant jolt I get is when I head to JB. Woodlands Checkpoint is like a fortress that makes you feel miserable just for entering. By contrast, Iskandar on the other side is welcoming and pleasant. Far from being a crime-ridden hell hole, I find the Malaysian side to be pleasant and charming. They don’t have an issue with Singapore the way Singapore has an issue with Malaysia.

It’s necessary to travel sometimes – just enough to get your perspective on the world rather than LKY’s version of it.

    @Sim Hang:

Please read more widely before you all comment, especially Sim Hang who criticize people for being stupid. I guess, sometimes, stupid people like to call people stupid.

Your arguments are full of fallacy. Just because everyone recognizes that he is great, does not necessarily mean he is great. For example, in the sub-prime crisis, everyone recognize that the idea of subprime lending is great, but in the end, it proved otherwise. Your arguments are poorly substantiated.

    @Coin, wrong,

If you have read economic articles on development, you will actually understand that institutions play a very important role and is known to be significant in affecting growth. Moreover, contrary to what our social studies taught us and the “no natural resource” lame theories, this actually benefited us as it lead to an establishment of better institutions. It is well-known fact that countries with natural resources fare more poorly instead as their colonial masters tend to exploit the country because of it. The institutions established by the British, enabled us to industrialized quickly for economic growth, according to many economic articles, and these are not established by the PAP.

I am not saying that MM Lee has not done anything, but he twist his works and exaggerate his efforts in nation building is a bit too much. Our ancestors and us Singaporeans play a huge part too and it is not just a one-man show.

@Tang Li, reminds me of this old joke which circulated in the Economist, now updated a little

Our beloved Minister Mentor returned from a private visit to India with a small bolt of silk of extraordinary design.

He consulted his tailor immediately, who assured him there was just enough fabric to fashion a suit that would fit him perfectly. Ecstatic, he dashed off to an official meeting in Beijing with President Hu Jintao, bringing the silk with him.

Following the meeting, he couldn’t resist sharing his excitement with President Hu, and asked if he could see his tailor for a second opinion.

Hu’s tailor was flabbergasted at the beauty of the silk, took MM Lee’s measurements, and told him he could easily make him a suit and an extra pair of trousers.

Although MM Lee was perplexed, he said nothing because he was already late for a flight to Washington, where he was scheduled to see US President Obama.

Before the meeting, he asked to see Obama’s tailor, who took his measurements, and confidently told him he could make two suits and an extra pair of trousers from the bolt of Indian silk.

“What is it about your tailors,” Lee later asked the American president, “that makes them so much better than tailors in Singapore and China? Mine said he could make me a suit out of this bolt of silk. Hu’s tailor said he could make me a suit and an extra pair of trousers. Your tailor, Mr President, can make me two suits and an extra pair of trousers. Is it your technology? Your superior productivity?”

“Certainly not, Mr. Lee,” replied Obama. “It’s simply that the further away you are from Singapore, the smaller you become.”

LKY might be right about the obscenely paid ministers but LHL will have to bankrupt the country this time to get the rest of the population on board.

  • DUH:

you’re just an upset malay who got angry at the hoo-haa about his harsh truths regarding malays needing to better integrate with the other races, etc.

You put it across as if during that ERA, anybody could have led Singapore well. I don’t think so at all.

Even today, look at the politicians, they all seem crazy. What do you think it was like during that era where most people are not educated?

    Stupid.
