A non-partisan analysis on the recent RP exodus

Tony & Hazel

The recent exodus of about 20 members from the Reform Party (RP) has caught the attention of Singaporeans. Many have lamented that one of the most promising opposition party have self-destructed, and that once again the opposition is in a state of pathetic disarray, with their seeming inability to keep themselves together as a cohesive force against the PAP. With an educated guess based on historical trends that the General Election date will be held in May, just after the PAP’s vote buying package will be given out, this spat of “bad PR” for the RP could not have come at a worse time.

After analyzing both statements from RP’s Kenneth Jeyaretnam and the exodus couple, Hazel & Tony, I have come to the conclusion that this maneuver bears the telltale signs of a well-targeted political move by the PAP to discredit and weaken the RP, which has been seen in recent times as one of the strongest opposition party in Singapore. Why target RP? To many Singaporeans who have been brainwashed by the mainstream media, the SDP is seen as a pariah, the SDA is perceived to be losing influence with an aging Chiam, the WP is alleged to be a complicit ally of the PAP, and none of the other parties have the resources that is capable of contesting a substantial numbers of seats in the Parliament. Indeed, the only party that is shining now is the RP. If I were the PAP, targeting them would be the most logical and highest priority task. In fact, I would go as far as to opine that Hazel & Tony are PAP moles sent to infiltrate the RP and have completed their mission successfully by creating this bad publicity around RP.

Firstly, let us examine the initial news report from the mainstream media Straits Times. Focus on the specific words that Hazel & Tony used for their reasons for leaving, specifically “differences of opinion” that led to “a point where no further compromises could be made”. The careful choice of words was crafted to inflict maximum damage on Mr Jeyaretnam’s character and competency as the leader of RP. This setup is similar to the previous SDA Chiam-Chee split, which has perpetuated the myth that Chee ungratefully ousted his mentor Chiam that is unfortunately still a prevalent belief held today.

Kenneth Jeyaretnam

Secondly, let us examine the follow up responses from Kenneth and the couple, Hazel & Tony. Kenneth cited there were some concerns that Tony attempted to bribe the CEC. The couple’s defense was that the ang pow was given in a personal capacity, and was meant to help one of the CEC’s member’s son inthe backdrop of Chinese cultural practices of giving ang pow during the Chinese New Year. Nevertheles if we were to look at the sum of the ang pow, it is an anomalously large sum of $400 for just mere friends. In addition, even considering the cultural backdrop of ang pow giving, it is totally inappropriate to present such money at an official RP meeting as it will undoubtedly stir up misunderstandings of bribery. Kenneth’s request for an inquiry into this matter may be seen as a bit harsh and uncalled for from the perspective of some RP members. However, one has to bear in mind that locals have been brought up in an environment whereby the emphasis of professional ethics and conflict-of-interest in receiving gifts are sorely lacking, whereas Kenneth has been working in UK for many years which adopt more transparent system that places emphasis on professional ethical conduct and the importance of considering conflict-of-interest in such personal transactions. We should be happy that Kenneth has chosen to follow a strict code of conduct, and I do hope that this event will lead RP to craft a clear and written set of rules for accepting gifts. Thus, we can see the situation can be summarized as a simple cultural misunderstanding and a difference in professional ethical standards between Kenneth and the couple, Hazel & Tony. This may be a “difference in opinion” but hardly something that one would consider degenerating into “a point where no further compromises could be made”.

Thirdly, let us examine the manner in which the news was released. Hazel & Tony claimed that they did not release it to the mainstream media, but were rather contacted by the mainstream media for comment. If indeed Hazel & Tony were just innocent leavers of RP, why then would they even entertain the mainstream media with such malicious remarks, given the well-known fact that the mainstream media is just an extension of the PAP, and talking to them it would just give the PAP extra ammunition to attack the RP? If the couple were truly just innocent leavers of RP, they would have simply declined to comment. Instead, not only did they lash out malicious remarks about Kenneth to the PAP, they also successfully lobbied 20 members to leave with them, magnifying the severity of the exodus event. If this was just a simple misunderstanding between the couple and Kenneth, why then did they need to drag 20 other people with them? Finally, let us not forget that Hazel & Tony were PSC scholars and worked for the PAP government at one time. Given the nature of their actions and their dubious background, it is not beyond belief that they are PAP moles tasked to infiltrate RP and stir up trouble from within, a task in which they have accomplished successfully.

Given the facts that we have available to us, it is my conclusion that Hazel & Tony have intentionally stirred up this bad publicity for RP at a time where it would do the most damage (just months before election). My conclusions are based on the following facts, that the couple:

(1) intentionally chose to make malicious remarks against Kenneth to the PAP-controlled mainstream media with the knowledge that it will stir up bad publicity,

(2) the crux of the alleged problem appears to be nothing more than a simple misunderstanding and

(3) they lobbied 20 other RP members to leave with them, adding fuel to the fire they have started.

The PAP is to be congratulated for their political finesse in this maneuver that even outwitted Mr Kenneth Jeyaretnam, and even I have to concede that the PAP is the winner for this round. Let this be a warning to all opposition parties to be careful about who to accept into their parties, least they find themselves in a similar situation sometime down the road. My personal opinion is that all opposition parties should refuse Hazel & Tony’s application to join them as we do not know where their allegiance lies. Singaporeans can further lend their support by boycotting Hazel & Tony’s tuition agency, SmartLab.

Finally, given that 20 members were influenced to leave RP along with the couple does hint that there may have indeed been some “difference in the opinion” or some seed conflict within the party that the couple leveraged on to influence the exodus of these people. However, I would encourage Singaporeans not to see this as a sign of weakness but rather as a signal of strength. A healthy dose of intra-party conflict is necessary for a political party to grow and address the needs of the people from various viewpoints and considerations. It would be much worse if RP was made up of a bunch of “yes-men” agreeing to everything that Mr Kenneth Jeyaretnam says. Indeed, it is the conflict-less nature of the current government that has led to current sorry state where the needs of the people are not addressed by any politician.

.
Garrett Goh

Tong and Hazel are moles. Period.

from what we know so far..

Tony wanted to go with his angpow walk about under RP banner but in his personal capacity. What kind of bullshit is that. If he is indeed that charitable, he and his wife could just go quietly to give angpows to those poor families that they wish to help. No need for prior annoucement. The whole purpose of this is to create division and animosity among the various candidates in RP and as KJ said, to give ammunintion to pap to shoot bsck at RP over the budget vote buyings.

The $400 angpow to the CEC member, they could have given the angpow after the meeting and not infront of others. This is purposely done to create unhappiness, insinuation and misunderstanding among the members.

KJ mentioned that certain people would want to go the NMP way. Looks like the Pap intention is to made RP into an approved opposition party. Seeing that it is not to be, then next move is to try to destroy the credibility and standing of RP.

Well done Tong and Hazel, but we ain’t duds !

It seems your article has placed the conclusion upfront, and then constructs the evidence to support your conclusion. Besides the ang pow, there are no other facts. Even then, the ‘fact’ in the ang pow incident was what was handed over at a specific location. The motive behind remains unclear, from the different viewpoints present.

How do you know 20 members left because of the duo (in fact, it should be less than 20). Second, how would “differences of opinions” that led to “a point where no further compromises could be made” be deemed malicious unless the reader chooses to think so?

It would be disingenuous if KJ were to be suspicious that these 2 are moles right from the start. He has given them the benefit of doubt, provided them the opportunity to serve the people. I applaud him and any true leader would have done the same. I don’t see KJ as being outwitted. There will always be moles around. And when the moles decide to stir trouble, as a true leader he came forward and gave the people the facts. That’s a good demonstration of accountability and transparency to his political members unlike our government.

Don’t worry KJ- you’d still have my vote. The $400 ang pow says it all. Those members who left with these 2 scholars are either stupid or moles themselves too- neither qualities of which you’d want in your members.

  • btan:

    Hi Author,

I feel your analysis is way off-tangent. Here are the following salient points you missed:

a.) Dr Chee Soon Juan had already vouch for the characters of both side. Hence we now have to rule out “moles-from-PAP” conjecture. Unless you think Dr Chee is a PAP mole.

    http://yoursdp.org/index.php/news/singapore/4635-let-us-help-to-resolve-rp-issue

b.) SDP is hardly a pariah. It has grown to be quite a credible party judging by its successful $20K donation drive purely from internet. I hope voters can similar do this for their election effort. $20K can easily put a couple of candidates to run for election.

c.) WP alleged being an ally of PAP is also a fallacy perpetrated by some elements of online community, especially certain editor(s) of Temasek Review. Whether these people are PAP moles or just plain ignorant is yet to be seen. WP, in fact, is the greatest threat to PAP being the oldest party and had a huge support base, both from the blue-collared workers and the silent moderate majority. They are the ones who have consistently getting 40%+ votes in GRCs and most likely to wrestle one from PAP (Eunos, Cheng San, Aljunied). WP is the only party that has NO media support (both from MSM and internet community) and yet done the most on the ground quietly.

d.) That RP is a shining star is undeniable. However, please note that their reputation is way inflated compared to their achievements. Many voters have to understand they have not been tested and in fact, this episode is their baptism of fire. (a tiny flame in fact). The big guns of PAP had not even fire a single salvo yet.

e.) The ang pao incident and the MSM incident are also blown way out of proportion. The ang pao recipient had already said his piece in the article as follows.

    http://theonlinecitizen.com/2011/02/mohd-affendy%e2%80%99s-response-to-the-ang-pao-incident/

Note that the recipient, like Dr Chee, also vouched for both parties. As for the MSM, it’s basically naive greenhorn politicians falling easily to MSM tricks. This is understandable and not malice on each side.

My own analysis is basically this is a cultural conflict between the “hearts” and the “brains”. Those that quitted are the hearts. The touchy feely type who wants to do charity, help people, connect with people. KJ and those with him are the more rational people who deals with cold hard facts and logic.

We need the “brains” to defeat PAP. We need the “hearts” to win people’s support.

If I might remind everyone, the same thing happened within PAP. LKY was the “brain” and Lim Chin Siong was the “heart”. History has shown what happened. This is why Singapore had a lot of brains but no heart.

The challenge now is for the opposition to see how to reconcile the two. Without which it will be tough to dislodge PAP. If opposition only have the “brains”, they will eventually dislodge PAP but they will become the new PAP. If the opposition have the “hearts” which there are many to date, they will never be able to dislodge PAP and have to content with scraps given to them, like the NCMP.

Finally, I feel this issue has been blown way above proportion. I suspect the real PAP agents are the ones who is fanning the fire. Right now the battle is coming. Everyone should put down their cudgel and concentrate to face the common enemy.

Please move on, focus on the elections and whether each political has a clear plan for the next 5 years of this country, not just big talk like “More Good Years”, “Singapore for Singaporeans”. We want clear plans, clears targets and clear policies and steps to get there.

A real serious political party will set clear targets, goals and policies to get there and demonstrate the political will to do so and the electorate measure the competence of the party at the end of each 5 year term by their results.

In fact, RP’s recent exodus of staff should only suggest consolidation of party cohesion and a good opportunity to build up party discipline and policies to move it forward as a united party, a good sign of political if they prove so in the future

Speculations of moles, spies, sabotage, character differences, character assasination, etc are weak assessment of political parties, like most core measures, its hard targets not “I dont like so and so” or “So and so look ugly”

Its sad to see the maturity of the Singapore electorate is still at the level of uncle/ auntie talk. That’s is no different from PAP saying James Gomez submitted the wrong documents, therefore not qualified to be an MP rather than addressing the key issues of this country

i think this is a very biased article. the basic assumption is that tony and hazel are pap moles and the whole article then go on to attack them. why doesn’t the writer interviews some of the rp members who have left and asked them why they leave in the first place? all in all, more than 20 members have left. you cannot assumed that all these people are easily influenced and can’t tell right from wrong. if you have your top leaders walking out on you, then you have a serious problem with the sec-gen. first he claimed they did not resign but their memberships have lapsed (some for more than 6 months) then why were they involved in cec meetings, appearing at walk-abouts and as speakers at last month’s hong lim event. it’s strange that non members can attend important cec meetings and make decision for the party??? and if these people have ceased to be members, how is this ang pao going to have an impact? the today newspaper mentioned it was a “power struggle” and if that is the case, why didn’t tony take up KJ’s offer to take over the party? i think s’poreans need to know the truth and i am sure some day, the truth will be reviewed and we’ll know who is the real culprit.

I, too am inclined to believe that these two are moles. If they are not and truly care about the interest of the oppositions, or of the people, they should have had a talk with KJ and if they still cannot come to an agreement, at least resign after the election.

One day the opposition will come into power. Maybe not this election but definitely, the day will come. When it does, history will be written with the names of traitors spelled out. This is what Barack Obama meant by `be on the wrong side of history’.

A well written article I could not have expressed better…. time will tell if indeed the two are PAP moles.

Great PAP credentials, even to the extent of giving away “hongbaos” just before the election.. not a position of RP. Leaving en-masse to “inflict the maximum damage”, and leaking the news to the main stream media becuase the MSM called them for an interview?

I cannot imagine them joining any other opposition parties. Getting support of dissenters/oppositions through the RP, and then “inflicting the damage” when they have achieved it?

Can’t agree more with your chain of thoughts below. Well said.

    Nelson M Lee:

Tong and Hazel are moles. Period.from what we know so far..

Well done Tong and Hazel, but we ain’t duds !

btan: Hi Author,I feel your analysis is way off-tangent. Here are the following salient points you missed:a.) Dr Chee Soon Juan had already vouch for the characters of both side. Hence we now have to rule out “moles-from-PAP” conjecture. Unless you think Dr Chee is a PAP mole.http://yoursdp.org/index.php/news/singapore/4635-let-us-help-to-resolve-rp-issueb.) SDP is hardly a pariah. It has grown to be quite a credible party judging by its successful $20K donation drive purely from internet. I hope voters can similar do this for their election effort. $20K can easily put a couple of candidates to run for election.c.) WP alleged being an ally of PAP is also a fallacy perpetrated by some elements of online community, especially certain editor(s) of Temasek Review. WP is the only party that has NO media support (both from MSM and internet community) and yet done the most on the ground quietly.d.) That RP is a shining star is undeniable. However, please note that their reputation is way inflated compared to their achievements. Many voters have to understand they have not been tested and in fact, this episode is their baptism of fire. (a tiny flame in fact). The big guns of PAP had not even fire a single salvo yet.e.) The ang pao incident and the MSM incident are also blown way out of proportion. The ang pao recipient had already said his piece in the article as follows.http://theonlinecitizen.com/2011/02/mohd-affendy%e2%80%99s-response-to-the-ang-pao-incident/Note that the recipient, like Dr Chee, also vouched for both parties. As for the MSM, it’s basically naive greenhorn politicians falling easily to MSM tricks. This is understandable and not malice on each side.My own analysis is basically this is a cultural conflict between the “hearts” and the “brains”. If the opposition have the “hearts” which there are many to date, they will never be able to dislodge PAP and have to content with scraps given to them, like the NCMP.Finally, I feel this issue has been blown way above proportion. I suspect the real PAP agents are the ones who is fanning the fire. Right now the battle is coming. Everyone should put down their cudgel and concentrate to face the common enemy.

    To address the issues:
    a) Chee’s personal statement is a politically correct statement of solidarity. He only “met” them. How much can they do about their personal characters and political agenda? You also neglect that Chee may have been tricked by the couple’s performance as Kenneth was.
b)”SDP is a pariah” was a comment written as an example of the misconception held by 66% of brainwashed citizens, in my explanation to justify why the PAP decided to target RP this time. It was not meant as an assertion that the statement is true.

    c) Refer to part (b). The article was not written to attack SDP or WP, but to illustrate how they are doing slightly worse in terms of PR vs RP. If this has cause a misunderstanding, then I do apologize.

    d) No comment

    e) Yes, I am aware the recipient has come forward to vindicate the couple. However, I am not convinced. It could be mere damage control and positive PR spin, it could be that he has yet to understand the intricacies of the PAP mole plot that has just occurred, etc. Assuming that the couple are innocent, why present money at an official RP meeting with the CEC? Regardless of their motives, that is totally inappropriate. If the RP were the government, charges of bribery can and should be brought against the person receiving the money. This is not a matter over “brains” or “hearts”. It is a matter of professional ethical conduct and conflict-of-interest, concepts which Singaporeans do not understand… and you have just proven my point with your statements.

I detest your statement insinuating that Kenneth has the character like that of LKY, which is based on fallacious reasoning. Just because Kenneth is smart with double honors, so he should have a character similar to that of LKY? I think YOU are the one who is off-tangent here.

meng: “Given the facts that we have available to us…”It seems your article has placed the conclusion upfront, and then constructs the evidence to support your conclusion. Besides the ang pow, there are no other facts. Even then, the ‘fact’ in the ang pow incident was what was handed over at a specific location. The motive behind remains unclear, from the different viewpoints present. How do you know 20 members left because of the duo (in fact, it should be less than 20). Second, how would “differences of opinions”that led to “a point where no further compromises could be made” be deemed malicious unless the reader chooses to think so?

Placing the conclusion or more appropriately, the summary of findings up front is a known style of writing. The evidence was not fabricated out from thin air, it was based on an analysis on the 3 separate “press release” over the RP exodus incident and trying to piece them into a coherent picture.

20 coordinated resignations in one day, and the couple issuing a statement to the MSM about that? I do think it is an unreasonable conclusion that they are the ringleaders behind the bunch. Unless you are claiming that the other 18 resignations are just pure coincidence.

To address your last point, the malicious remarks started out with Hazel & Tony. The phrase “differences of opinions” that led to “a point where no further compromises could be made” is indicating that Kenneth is entirely inflexible and uncompromising. If that is not a malicious attack of Kenneth’s character what is? Also, going to the MAINSTREAM press to air out those statements is a malicious act. Read my article again, if they were really innocent, they would not done this. Instead, they chose to consort with the enemy.

Nonsense: This may not be related to the article but it’s a healthy suggestion. And that is that you shouldnt be moderating comments. You guys as people who advocates freedom and alternate views pales in comprision to even the “controlled” Strait Times Media forums where posters do not need their opinions to await moderations. Unsuitable posts(eg. racists remarks) are only taken off after posting.
I hope you take this into SERIOUS consideration so not to be dubbed as a “controlled propaganda site” .

You could be like TOC which doesn’t hold comments for moderation, but which actively deletes and unapproves comments when it goes against their agenda. TR does comment moderation because it does not want to run afoul of the Sedition Act and other related legislation designed to weed out racist and anti-religious attacks. That’s a reasonable trade-off for me.

Plenty of people want to see TR taken down by the authorities. This is easily accomplished by getting a few operaties posing as ordinary commenters to post racist slurs and insulting attacks on religious beliefs to justify a crackdown. For all your claims that moderating comments runs against freedom of speech, have you ever had a comment which was not approved?

    I doubt so.

This article was based solely on published reports and thus the conclusion drawn is strictly personal, unsubstantiated and merely speculation. Passionate people often are swayed by emotions, values and beliefs. I believe Tony and Hazel are truly passionate about politics, and serving the people – unfortunately they may not be ready for true leadership yet. A true leader should be able to better handle such situation. Still, if Kenneth, Tony or Hazel choose to contest in my area, I would still vote for them – simply because I believe they need the chance to prove themselves and ALL setbacks are learning experiences. They will only become stronger and experiences need to be gained.

Garrett you have done a great service, in this hard-hitting article,
to the pro opposition camp. Thank you.

    One major point to consider:-
We can hardly expect KJ to openly say that the Traitorous Couple
and their mindless followers are moles because
    a) it would reflect very poorly on an opposition party leader
that he have been taken for a ride by certain quarters.
    b) KJ would be open to lawsuits from the turncoats if KJ publicly
had accused them of being moles. Also consider lawsuits from the Papies if they are accused of setting him up.

KJ has done the right thing by diplomatcally playing things down, by
defusing the situation, so minimum damage would be done to RP; and Dr. Chee has gain great creedence by giving support to RP. Notice that no other oppo parties have come in to support KJ

This augurs well for a future SDP/RP brotherhood.

Alright, assuming that this is the point of contention that spun off the “difference in opinion” that led to the inability for KJ to compromise because it is one of the key missions of RP – to reform and not to tweak, then why couldn’t they leave quietly? Why couldn’t the couple and their supporters leave without lashing out at KJ to the MSM/PAP? Why did they stage this mass resignation just months before the GE, and not leave last year when they realized they had this “difference of opinion” was a problem?

To all the Hazel & Tony apologists, the situation surrounding this incident is just all “too convenient” to be hand-waved away as an innocent and misguided breakaway from RP. If the couple and their supporters had left quietly and offered “no comment” to MSM, and perhaps hold a joint press conference with KJ to the New Media explaining the departure of 20 members, then I will be more inclined to believe that they are innocent. But facts of the case is that they did not. Not to forget that this is not an isolated incident. In KJ’s exclusive interview with TR, we learned that Tony attempted to carry out an unsanctioned ang-pow give away that undermined the integrity of RP. Some might even say they were trying to “sabotage” RP. Also, why was his membership fees not paid since last year? Were the couple planning to do something in 2011? This incident does not appear to be an “honest mistake”, but if people still want to cling to their political naivete that is their prerogative.

  • Oh Tham Eng:

    (From: http://www.temasekreview.com/2011/02/25/let-us-help-to-resolve-reform-partys-issue/ )

AN OPEN APPEAL TO MR KENNETH JEYARETNAM

    From: Mr Oh Tham Eng

cc – PM Lee, MM Lee, Dr Chee, Dr Wong Wee Nam, NSP, Orthers.

    Dear Kenneth,

    MAY ALL BE BLESSED!

I agree with Dr Chee’s sentiment and desire for all of you to come together. I would like to join him by encouraging you, as the leader of RP, to make the first move and say sorry to those 20 who left RP, and invite them back to RP. You won’t lose anything by saying “Sorry”, Kenneth. What Hazel and her husband clarified was acceptable—-they were following CNY tradition of giving angpows. So you do not need to be too uptight on the matter of the $400 angpow. Take it as just another instance of a murphy’s attack to cause serious misunderstanding between some people, as so commonly happen in human affairs.

On the other hand, I feel that Hazel and her husband need to be more circumspect on such matters in future, and not unwittingly put Kenneth in a predicament, as others will have different way of looking at such matters. So I would appeal to those who left to come back to RP and prepare for the GE 2011. Let both sides display their sportsmanship and magnanimity. Now is not the time to feed our big egos.

Why am I doing this—joining Dr Chee to appeal for both sides to come together again? Because I felt that PM Lee was really sincere in wanting to have more Opposition MPs in the next Parliament, not NCMPs. And the prevailing ground sentiments may be just right for Opposition to send in more people to Parliament—as MPs and not NCMPs.

And that was in line with what I had told PM Lee before the GE 2006, that Singaporeans wanted more Opposition in Parliament; and it would be good both for his and Singapore’s reputation. I was so pleased PM Lee was broadminded enough and receptive to my feedback to him, and he went on to give his best interpretation to what I had told him. MM Lee himself had also recently said that one day the PAP rule would have to come to an end, like all things in this world. Only God has eternity.

But the way PM Lee is leading the country and being so open to what people have to say to him, and not despising the feedback from small fries like me—this speaks very well for his inspiring leadership. So this allows me to play my role from both ends without being viewed suspiciously by people in the ruling party and by PM Lee himself or his dad as being a double-headed snake. But when all is said and done, it will be for the best interest of our beloved Singapore that must prevail over all of us—over what we said and do.

The fact is, Kenneth, we are all frail human beings, with our mortality to contend with and our desires in wanting others to treat us fairly and decently; with care and dignity.. So our hearts will over-rule our heads when it comes to the crunch, and we will vote accordingly. So I wish to say one more time that PM Lee is a naturally nice guy. Thanks also to his dear mum for succeeding to instill in her children this value of respect for others, and not allowing them to throw their weight around, especially when they were princelings. And I had been with PM Lee in SAFTI as fellow trainees during our NS days. I had sat beside him and had talked to him personally and so I can honestly say PM Lee is a naturally nice guy from my first hand experience.

Therefore, let this GE 2011 bring the best out of every one of us—-the contestants in both the PAP and Opposition parties, and the electorate. Then we can all be blessed!—whether as winners or losers.

So “Inspire us, Lord, to be thankful to Thee for Thy favours to us and our loved ones to do good deeds which will please Thee. Admit us, through Thy mercy, to be among Thy righteous.” An-Naml 27:19. “For the noblest in God’s sight is he/she who is the most righteous.” Al-Hujurat 49:13.

So to those reading my post: if you think that voting for the Opposition candidate in this coming GE is your good deed to please God, feel free to do so and be blessed, friends!

Thank you for reading my post.

    Sincerely,

    OTE

2)PAP IB had used tactics to confuse forumers by pretending to support oppositions:

    4) Timing of fallout.

CLARIFICATION to “A non-partisan analysis on the recent RP exodus”

It seems that are some misunderstandings about the intent of my letter.

    1) It is a proposed hypothesis to make sense about the recent RP exodus that has garnered some bad publicity, based on available evidence up till 24/2/2011.

    2) The suggestion that Hazel & Tony are PAP moles who instigated this mass exodus is a plausible explanation for the event. Nevertheless, even though I did not state it, I do not exclude the possibility that it could be simply “an honest mistake” and the bad PR was unintended. However, as reasoned in my article, the available evidence seems to indicate otherwise.

    3) I did not explicitly state not to vote for Hazel & Tony, but it seems that many people have interpreted my intentions as such. If the couple and their supporters were to join another party and are fielded against PAP candidates, I will categorically recommended that all opposition supporters vote for them, simply because they are still a better choice by virtue they are not PAP candidates. However, if the couple were to enter as independents and engage in a 3-corner fight with PAP and RP, I will be singing a different song.

    4) The last part of the article was to caution opposition parties to be careful when taking them in. At worst, they are PAP moles, and will stir up trouble again. At best, they are childish people who quit and make a big fuss whenever they don’t agree with something within the party, essentially making them a “loose cannon” and arguably more of a liability than an asset to any party. In both cases, it result in undesirable consequences.

    @Garrett

Make no mistake, me am no apologist to the TonyTan Hazel Poa protagonists.

What I want to highlight is something not many people have talked about. That is, the group within the RP that wanted only to go the NCMP route.

It’s my assumption that these two in the husband wife team were the main proponents to go the NCMP route. Now, the question is why choose to go for second place when the Party has the ability to gun for top prizes (that of full seats in Parliament) ? Full seats in Parliament means you are able to represent the peoples voices in all possible ways.

** Note that: Opposition parties in Singapore and critics of the NCMP system often state that the it effectively permanently resigns non-PAP MPs to a ’second class’ status and is a publicity stunt to lend legitimacy to the dominant party status of the PAP within the context of democracy in the country

If my assumption is correct, it would be then dubious and questionable as to why the Tan.Poa team wanted to go the NCMP route.

The next question to ask is, where they following external (pap) instructions to steer the RP to aim only for NCMP seats in Parliament ???

The above only adds to yours and many others here who have highlighted the other behavioural and conduct discrepancies of the TonyTan.HazelPoa team.

Many people feel that there’s something not right in what just happened.
You and many others have put in clear simple description what these are.

    Garrett:

  • Why Tony & Hazel Wants to be NCMP:

The NMP scheme is not only a form of co-optation but conforms to the government’s familiar elitist philosophy. Through the Special Select Committee, the government ensures that only people who have excelled or have special expertise in the professions, industries, commerce, cultural activities and social services are appointed. Through this scheme, the government has projected itself as providing a responsible and capable opposition.
Both the NCMPs and NMPs have some voting rights but are not allowed to vote on bills pertaining to financial and constitutional matters. They are second-class MPs and that the NMP scheme is particularly an affront to the principle of popular representation. What is unique about the Singapore case is that the development of NMPs precedes the development of proportionally elected representation. The scheme therefore does not support the development of multiparty representation but is a means of co-optation by the PAP to further entrench its position.

so WP are moles. tony n hazel, previously wasn’t but now moles. their DEAR Leeder, Mr KJ is perfect and infallible.

Why? cannot handle the criticisms that kenneth is arrogant and that not easy to work with?

Ng teck siong left. Tony left, Hazel left, Justin left, Gilbert join n quickly left. Mr chairman oso throw in the towel. So they are all moles. WAKE UP FROM UR SLUMBER PEOPLE! STOP DREAMING! There must be something wrong. Not with KJ’s ideals perhaps but it could be his approach that is turning people away.

Anyway, i’ve never seen RP as being at the forefront. It is just something that KJ probably believes n what TR wants its readers to believe. SDP, WP & NSP has been doing more work. One improves its image, one works the ground weekly and the other can be seen engaging the malay minority and all 3 has spoken up on issues.

While RP has been nothing but just chest thumping. Out of the blue, the minimum wage is their original idea or so they claim.

Criticise SDP of taking things too seriously, then KJ actually dared to use CSJ’s 20K fine to his advantage by proclaiming LOUDLY that he donated to CSJ.

Then handled the SDA issue badly causing SDA to be split! Well, if KJ had given other members in SDA respect, SDA would probably appear more united than it is now.

After kicking NTS out, this KJ actually said something like for once singapore has a reliable, capable opposition. Another slap to the other opposition. How insolent!

I agree with some forummers that not likely the 20 who left are moles since CSJ himself has called them friends. oh does having friends among the 20 makes CSJ a mole too? RP chairman, ISA detainee. He left too. What? From ISA Detainee to being a mole, a pap stooge or by whatever name you want to call him?

Just my opinion there could be trolls disguising themselves as RP supporters to wreck apart opposition. Look at how they, through TR harass WP. Look at how they proclaim support n admiration for KJ which probably got to his head n turn off many. They start giving the false impression that RP is well supported, much-loved. The cracks within RP were forming but those false impression of a very credible opposition only makes the cracks more glaring.

This is purposely done to create unhappiness, insinuation and misunderstanding among the members.KJ mentioned that certain people would want to go the NMP way. Looks like the Pap intention is to made RP into an approved opposition party. Daft Program for Singaporeans by PAP government 5-1

    For the PAP 1-1

The party chief use the “engineer” model to promote the team as smart, talented and well supported by ppl, without him there will be no Singapore. Our media is always promoting him as a hero like Mao Ze Dong. Even when they make mistake, they use rubbish party brand and old rubbish success stories to blind the public eye.

    For the People 1-2

    Election strategy

They use the media and bombarded them with rubbish and gossip news, rubbish TV program, rubbish policies, rubbish award, rubbish statistic, rubbish foods, rubbish excuses for all the mistakes made as they are trying to implant bad values like kaisu, kaisi and kaibo mentality. Everything that can make the ppl feel stupid with no choice but to put the blame on themselves to feel unfortunate.

    For Other Political Parties 1-3

They discredit other parties and label them as the group of trouble makers. They always publish articles on the other parties’ catfights and they are acting as mole for PAP. They will blame the opposition has not doing a good job to assist the PAP. They bad mouth the other parties and said they are a group of useless creatures, getting paid and not doing a good job etc. Their intention is to limit the choices for the voters to create the ill perception that “no other party is better than PAP” and don’t want check and balance from other parties.

They did this also because they want to stay in power to profit from the system for their ‘welfare and benefits $$$’.

Kenneth alluded to Tony & Hazel as Christian fundies though he did not say it outright in his Q&A with TR, refer back to that article. Also, among all those who resigned, there could also be a large number of Chrisitian fundies too. It smacks too much of an AWARE takoever.

Do you not think that their departure was timed so perfectly just before the Electoral Boundaries Report was released? Why not do it before like in December last year or early January this year? The Straits Times has the luxury but the TR does not because the PAP is watching very carefully to pounce once a mistake is made.

Every good thing has a cost. What you said is true. The difference is cost performance. You need high cost to keep ST up. When the whole world newspaper media bankrupt but ST still surviving must credit to its monopoly.

btw, what has happened to the ratings system here – thumbs up / thumbs down, where we can vote for each commentator’s remarks?

Were you told to take it down? Some people don’t like the information it gives?

Hanlon’s razor : “Never attribute to malice that which is adequately explained by incompetence.”

Tony Tan and the 20 people, are stupid to quit at an importune time and naive to reply to MSM. Both parties (the 20 and KJ) should also have discussed ways to minimise the impact but KJ chose to give a one-sided interview and press release which came back to bite him back in the ass.

All these basically says that they are inexperienced, not that they are bad or evil people. That’s all. Being a mole is the worse kind of evil act, bordering on traitorous activities. No one would like to be considered that.

(This is also why I don’t see them as “brains” despite their scholarly background) The kind of political accument only comes with experience.

Many people accused Low Thia Khiang and Chiam See Tong as stooges and moles. Now you know why they keep quiet. They are actually some of the best politicians in terms of “brains”. To fight cunning, you have to be cunning yourselves. Sadly, this is lacking in most of the opposition politicians, especially the new ones.

how can anyone be sure that no comments, whatver about, weren’y being taken off before? At the end of the day, there’s still no transparency.
