Opposition parties invited to PKMS’s ‘Unity’ event

The Singapore Malay National Organization (PKMS) has extended an invitation to all opposition parties to attend its “Unity” event which will be held on 5th March 2011 @ 1500 hours at PKMS building.

In an email reply to queries from the Temasek Review (TR), Mr Mohd Nazem bin Suki the Secretary-General said that it is the tradition from past election to meet up with representatives from opposition parties to discuss the strategies applicable and any issues which may arise in the coming General Election (GE).

Of importance would be the need to avoid three-cornered fights which without doubt, would deplete the opposition’s resources.

The previous time the electorate witnessed a multi-party contest was in the 1997 GE and signs so far indicate that such a scenario could be on the cards in the coming GE.

The Singapore Democratic Party (SDP) and the Socialist Front (SF) had staked fresh claims on the new Whampoa Single-Member Constituency (SMC), while the former is also targeting Yuhua SMC, which the Reform Party (RP) is eyeing.

Punggol East and Radin Mas were reportedly two other new SMCs where there could potentially be three-cornered fights – in addition to established GRCs such as Tampines and Jurong.

It is learnt that SDP, SF, NSP, SDA and WP have confirmed attendance while SPP and RP are pending.

If anything in Singapore’s GE were to keep up with traditions, it will be the “easy victory for the incumbent”! This good tradition haven’t change since 1968! LOL

SINGAPOREANS MUST LEARN TO UNITE just like those sectoral FTs are ‘enclaved’.

look at how singaporean managers ‘KICK OUT’ their own colleagues.
see how this contrasts with the INDIAN FT prmoted to manager after he kicks out that singaporean manager – the indian ft-made manager now RECUITS ALL HIS VILLAGERS despite there are better singaporean candidates.

  • Not the Singapore they once knew:

Last nite received a call from an old friend who had migrated overseas. She said she was shocked to hear that all her dozen or so Singaporean cousins are now very much against the PAP. They were once strong supporters of the PAP. They have made up their minds to vote for any opposition this time. They are so sick and tired of being pushed around with policies that do not benefit them. They felt they are being cheated. They say should the PAP win, they will be making serious plans to migrate elsewhere. Told her that generally people here are now disillusioned with the government who have lost touch with the people.

  • I have been used up in Singapore:

I think its the strategy of the ruling party to divert the opposition into targeting the SMC while most GRC’s are uncontested for.
Which will make them the majority again.
This i think is the stratergy taken as they find the mass of singaporeans not happy with their policies in recent times which has greatly disadvatnaged us Singaporeans.
So long story short if they cant avoid the opposition in parliament then it is abvious they want to minimise the number of them in Parliament.

  • commentator with lots of hope:

Dear leaders of the opposition parties,

I would like to offer the following thoughts and points for your consideration as you begin to plan mapping out your candidates to the various constituencies in the upcoming general election.
A lot of what I am saying below is common sense, and I am sure you would have thought about them. I am hoping that this will bring out other good thoughts and suggestions/reflections which hopefully will be useful as you go through the exercise.

I am sure we all want to see a united picture and good co-operation from the opposition parties in this very crucial election, to see the dawn of a new era and significant changes. 50 years of nonsense has been far too long already. Time for a big change.

I believe there are a few key principles and objectives you want to remember/follow as you work out the allocation. The key objective is to maximize the strength of opposition, and hence achieve the best electoral results for the opposition as a group( and individual parties).
The following should be achieved where possible:

    1. avoid the internal fights(like 3-cornered flights) and split the opposition votes. To the extent that there are known independents who might come to any of the constituencies, you should approach them and get them to join you. Be prepared for the cronies used by PAP as “independents” to divide up the votes for opposition. They have money and will resort to all the dirty tricks and tactics. This election is no-win for them, so they will pull all the stops.
    2. Fill candidates in all SMCs: this arethe easy ones and there should not be any walkovers in these sSMCs. Psychologically this will create a backlash in the people it this were to happen.
    3. Maximize the strength of opposition parties:
    a. let the parties who are the incumbents contest the two seats they are now holding.
    b. let the parties who have contested in the previous GRC/SMC go back to those areas—this is to capitalize on their strengths and minimize the effort to rebuild the support for a new party.
    c. Avoid the government walk over with enough seats to form the government on the nomination day: this should not happen , as psychologically this will turn the opposition supporters off and reduce their turnout on election day.To this end, it is all the more important for the opposition to join hands, form groups to go into certain GRCS where possible(in so doing, remember to tap on the strengths of the constituent parties).
Sun Zi Strategy says you have to attack the opponent at its weakest point. I am sure you would have a least of GRCs with ranking according to their ranks and your chances of making the breakthroughs. While this would be subjective, this should be used to the fullest extent possible. There are some weak ministers you would have to go after, like Mah Bow Tan(HDB and housing issue), Vivien (overexpenditure in YOG), Ibrahim (his weakness in dealing the hard truth controversy), Lee Bee Wah( fiasco in table tennis association), and the Minister involved in the Mas Selamat Fiasco, Lim HNG Kiang( lack of results in resolving old age Security issue, etc.

I can support that LHL should not be left unchallenged(also given the impressive results last round).

If you can, you should not let the old man have a easy time, let him work and drive him nuts. He may say something really stupid and help you—even the cooling off day wont save PAP.
Look at the old constituencies where the opposition have had success and done well(e.g. Dr Chia Thye Poh,who was the MP under Barisan Sosialis in the Jurong constituency then– during the early 1960s and was detained under ISD for 23 years without trial followed by 9 years of house arrest). While people has changed and moved on, there are still older folks around who remember history—don’t discount this factor.
Do not play into the strength of PAP. If man power is an issue, avoid ministers who have track record—like the finance minister who is now giving away election goodies(I know this is subjective but is a factor you need to consider).

PAP has huge war chest given the friends in the business world(Those with BPM, what I called the cap for bottled soft drinks) and connection/vested interest in the continuation of this regime , their huge salaries, and their years in power, not to mention the compliant media.

So you would have to be prepared financially. Start a fresh round of fund raising asap!

At the end of all this, there will be some give and take. I sincerely hope that in the interest of Singaporeans, you folks can forge a strong alliance and go against this formidable and cruel force. They will be at the end of the election. I think LHL /old man/ Goh(who?) will not be stupid enough to do anything before the final vote.

I wish you all the luck and good discussion and work out on the very important exercise for the future of Singapore—What you will achieve will go into the history book for Singapore, and future generations of Singaporeans will thank you for this!!!

If this negotiation by some Party to over stomach more seat, Which they are not able to represent more candidate to contest. At the end during the Nomination day, resulting in the number of uncontested constituency, which is very detrimental to the other opposition losses. This is a likely scenario, because one or two Party may B too greedy, resulting in other Party ,who have genuine candidate being left out, Because of this un-principle Party to reserve more then what they can stomach.

    Dear Opposition Parties & Singaporeans,

Please remember how LKY_PAP has broken many of it own rules and laws. And since that GE 2011 goodies will be distributed on May 1 which is Labour Day. it’ll most appropriate to be emember that PAP government does have a 44 hours work week law.

And that for years now, many bargainable or unionized Singaporeans and foreigners here have been working 12 hour days for 6 days a week. That’s 12 x 6 = 72 hours a week. And it breaches the 44 hours by 28 hours. As if that’s not enough. the majority of don’t even get paid overtime for the extra 28 hours of work! Worse is they don’t get medical benefits too nor paid leave. Fall sick and for 1 day off on Certified Sick Leave and their boss will ALSO deduct 2 day’s pay!

Yet NTUC Labour Chief Lim Swee Say CHAMPIONS NO Minimum Wage! WHY???????????????????????????????????????

How true. That’s leadership at it’s best.
Not like our money-mad crazy rulers who does not care at all about the repercussions and social impact. Serious problems are cropping up one after another. Despite the strong objections by so many groups and individuals, they didnt care a damn and proceeded set up those evil joints, two at one go. They ignored all advices. Any nation can built a casino. But the wiser ones are more careful. For a small country it is suicidal to endorse and encourage gambling. Use your common sense. They have failed miserably.

  • Thinking ahead:

Here’s how to avoid 3-cornered fight:

Negotiate. If negotiations fail, mediate using a mediator.

Really the opposition party who has worked the ground hardest and longest should prevail over the other opposition party which has not put in as much time and resources, and be the one who stands whilst the other withdraws.

Part of the deal between the 2 could be something along the lines that if the prevailing party can only muster less than 30% of the actually vote in the 2011 GE, then come the following GE (2016?), that party which lost the contest must voluntarily give way in that constituency to the other opposition party and not contest that seat again in the 2016 GE nor in the 2021 GE. But if the prevailing party gets 30% or more, it can keep trying there though it must give way in one other constituency in the subsequent GE: perhaps in the one that it has done most poorly, so the party which did not prevail at least has that consolation for withdrawing.

  • Thinking futher ahead:

If there were some form of Proportional Representation system, then there is no need to avoid a 3-cornered fight.

In reality there should be a 3-cornered fight since each party has a different outlook.

If e.g. there is a constitutional change favouring PR system, there could be a 5-member GRC and if the vote is 36-32-32 as in the example given, then probably the result might be something like 3 seats PAP, 1 seat WP, 1 seat RP, rather than winner takes all. Even if that return is not exact, it is far better than the current first past the post winner takes all system. Is that not fairer? If we must have Malay candidates then we should have a list system where either the first or second name on each party list must be a Malay. If that is the case, then 100% sure that one of the 5 MPs will be a Malay; probably the parties will put a Malay as No.2 on its list (but no stopping if they want to put as No. 1). If all put Malays as No.1, there could even be 3 Malay MPs (of different parties) returned. We might even have an addiitonal rule that if No.1 is a Malay, No. 2 or 3 on the list must be a woman; and if No. 2 is a Malay, No. 1 or No. 3 on the list must be a woman.

Really, the point in NOT lack of Malay representation. The point is lack of opposition representation when in each GE, about 30-40% vote opposition and the numbers returned to Parliament under the FPTP system don’t reflect that. PAP attempted to solve that by having NCMP. This is laughable. There should be 20+ opposition MPs under a PR system and not one NCMP.

    UNITY

    O’Muslim Let’s Unite!

We argue and we fight, When we are supposed to unite, So many disputes amongst us, Instead of peace, we make a fuss.

So many different reasons we have found, For us to break the bonds of brotherhood, Our unity has been pushed underground, For we don’t treat each other as we should.

We all have the same belief, yet somehow we still bring each other down, can’t we see that unity will bring relief, if only all our differences we can drown.

Allah has willed for us to be one entity, Standing together, with unrivalled unity, Yet we choose to ignore this, as we succumb to outside pressures, our unity goes amiss.

Of a strong brotherhood there is no trace, so many different groups in one small place, and weaker we become each day, because together we cannot stay.

Unity is the only answer, One brotherhood, stronger than them all, Only then will we not fall, the courage to unite, we have to muster!

O’Muslims, let’s unite, Striving together to do what’s right, O’Muslim, let’s not wait, For it might just be too late.

Does that mean PAP wins even there there was a 64% vote against them and only 36% for?

I never for a moment doubt the united opposition parties can change the lives of Singaporean. Indeed, it is the thing that ever will. What else could possibly cause that change otherwise?

Unity is strength, great virtues of governance are pure and universal: freedom, justice, duty, mercy, honesty and hope, for the people and for the system we want our children and grand children to have. Mind you, if we can succeed in doing that, it will be better than leaving them many more Temasek Corporation!

A government who does not respect these virtues is living in a world of its own at the expense of its people. Relentless pursuit of profits for the State seems to be the thing that matters most in the way our government formulate their economic policies.

A country or a society cannot be governed by the principle of more and more money being channelled to and controlled by the government. It is against free market principle and that is why we do not have home grown industries and brand name products like they have in South Korea and Taiwan. What home grown entrepreneurs do we expect when our economic system and fiscal policies are designed to prevent us from being able to hold on to too much cash? Let alone any genuine attempt at enterprising, it is suicidal for an individual to start out in an environment of unlevel playing field.

One of our greatest bankers has said many years ago, much to the annoyance of our ruling establishment, that our economic policies and structure would result in a situation where if one were to survive in the private business environment in Singapore, one has to be either very, very big or very, very small. That situation has arrived.

I like to quote some famous phrases said by some very famous people, to me these are words of wisdom:

No man is good enough to govern another man without that other’s consent.

The love of liberty is the love for others. The love of power is the love for ourselves.

He who is of the opinion money will do everything may well be suspected of doing everything for money.

To sit back hoping that someday, someway, someone will make things right is to go on feeding the crocodile hoping he will not eat you, or at least eat you last – BUT EAT YOU HE WILL !

Say there’s a 3 corner contest, (eg only) PAP, WP, RP.

    PAP – 36%
    WP – 32%
    RP – 32%

    Of course the PAP wins.

You can go around the world and ask anyone you meet on this.

If not who wins ? WP wins ? RP wins ? or nobody wins ?

Then how many election we need to take ? 1 or 2 or 3 or …endless ?

You not agree PAP wins because you are biased to sum up the 2 WP and RP votes. Or you need to make them to work out to have only 1 candidate out of WP and RP to have one on one fight with PAP.

Are you primary school educated ?

  • Avoid three corners:

If the opposition parties cannot come to an agreement to avoid three corner fights, then the public would have no sympathy for them because of the selfishness, and we hope that in such a suicidal fiasco they would all lose their deposit.

Are you retarded, oxygen deprived or just plain stupid?

In the example, it’s not tallying the number of people who voted for WP and RP, it’s counting the number of people who voted AGAINST the PAP.

Hey dumb ass. When you can only count to 10 don’t think people who can count to billions are dumber than you just cause you can’t understand them.

Ask anyone in the world your lampah! There are fairer election tallying systems out there that your pea brain isn’t aware of.

Instant Run-Off Voting for one. You vote for as many candidates as you want listing them in preferential order. The 1st choices are tallied and if no party has an outright majority of 51% (some countries set it at higher levels) at least, then the 2nd choices are also tallied, then the 3rd if need be.

This way you get a better represented candidate than one who in reality more people voted against than for “winning”.

  • Built in corruption:

    See “Instant Run-off Voting”.

    Farce Democracy:
(Rhetorical question here) How come till today we don’t have a weightage system for elections?

    Eg.If 3 way contest, we check a 1st and 2nd choice.If 4 ways, 1st, 2nd and 3rd choice.

Assign 3 points for 1st choice, 2 points for 2nd and 1 points for 3rd.Do a tally at the end.The party that gathered the most points wins the ward.

That’ll avoid situations where a party wins even with most voted against them like this.

so workers’ party contesting AMK again right? just sent a bunch of newbies again. doesnt matter lose, but i’ll bet lhl will get lesser than the 66.1% he gt the last time round. though a ltk-sylvia-eric-rahizan combo will be mouth watering to kick lhl n his supporting acts out.

SDP really gonna give sembawang a miss? we all know SDP screwed up badly last GE. but this time is different. there’s a growing unhappiness with PAP n SDP’s image has improve. the irrational tantrums throwing antics has greatly lessened. ppl r more willing to take sdp seriously.

Which is the constituency that reputedly has 5 parties eyeing it? if its a grc, then each party send 1 rep lor.

Why is RP not sending a team to tanjong pagar? c’mon now KJ. You’ve got a stack of applications with with! not one. not two. A STACK! more than the number of ppl that walked out, isnt tt what he claims?

SJP used to love contesting Marine parade, SDA not interested to send a team there?

NSP is probably the most centrist of all the parties but is walking a dangerously on a this rope with the malay bureau they formed. they risked playing the race cards so i hope NSP will take extra care with the issues they’re going to raise.

SF too new, too small. is SF joining SDA? DPP sent a representative but what else do we know abt DPP? Maybe TR might want to write a line or two so we know something abt DPP. And USD, what is it’s purpose?

  • Easy to avoid few coners fight??:

What it so difficult? It all voice down if all the oppo want to unite or not? Or to have selfish agenda??

    As easy as internal voting.
Example: if 3 oppo like the same place.
Just get this 3 oppo to cast a vote each.
They cannot vote their own party, can only vote which of the other 2 parties got the highest chance to win.
The party that gets 2 votes shall emerge!!!!
