Tin Pei Ling’s police case: Still no updates from police after 1 month

Author: It has been a month since a police report was lodged against PAP MP Tin Pei Ling for allegedly flouting election laws on ‘cooling off’ day and there are still no updates from the police on the matter.
According to Kimberly Chan who filed the complaint against Ms Tin on 12 May, she received a letter from the police claiming that the case is still ‘under investigation.’
In contrast, then WP candidate for Aljunied GRC Dr James Gomez was arrested barely two weeks after a police report was lodged against him for ‘intimidating’ a civil servant. He was subsequently let off with a warning as there is no case against him in the first place.
The police also acted immediately whenever PAP MPs filed police reports. Last year March, a 52 year old cabby was arrested for ‘threatening’ his PAP MP Lee Yi-Shyan one day after the report was lodged. In another instance, a 17 year old mentally challenged boy was arrested by the police on the same day a complaint was made against him for slamming a chair against a glass door during a PAP MP’s Meet-the-People session.
In the meantime, Ms Tin continues to act blur as if nothing has happened despite a police case hanging over her head. In her last post on her Facebook wall on Wednesday, she wrote it’s a ‘good idea’ for the Ministry of National Development to ask for ideas as “even the smallest of ideas can make a significant impact on our daily lives.”
Though Ms Tin was ostensibly recruited by Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong as a PAP MP to reach out to young Singaporeans, she did not represent the PAP in a post-GE forum organized by the Institute of Policy Studies a few days ago. Desmond Lee, who is a few years older than her, was sent instead.

The police have lost their credibility as an independent law enforcement unit since the day LKY and LHL started condemning the Opposition Parties particularly Chee Soon Juan and Chee Siok Chin.
They resort to man handling any opposition party resisting arrest or arguing with them. The police come in big numbers even the person detained was one person or two persons. One typical example was the arrest of Chee Siok Chin by several poloicemen and policewomen when she and a photographer were on the way to Shangri-la at Orange Grove Road. The police just refuse her to go there and abduct her away because on 20 Nov 2007, as ASEAN signs its charter that purportedly respects and protects human rights and fundamental freedoms.
She was barred from going to attend the signing. The Police claimed that the area is a protected area and she is not allowed to go there.

Violation of any election law is therefore a very serious matter and should be investigated with utmost transparency and justice, otherwise the democratic process and system would appear to have been compromised.
In this case, the alleged violation was reported to take place before the election (cooling off day is a day before the General Election). Does this therefore imply that not only the punishment as detailed in the law for the proven offender but also that the entire team would be disqualified from the election and a walk over for the other team? Lawyers and the law academics who specialise in this area of law may perhaps like to enlighten the rest of us.

The problem is that she happens to be in MP GRC, which is led by the ESM. TPL wrong = ESM wrong
