How worrying is this seeming contradiction by a ‘paper general’?

Chief of Army Major-General Melvyn Ong  has said there’s “Nothing unnatural about armoured carriers transiting in Hong Kong”.

With other ministers comforting one another by saying too much in the media, Singaporeans are concerned but still uncertain about the return of our military equipment.

We have a chief paper general who explains why and how the SAF transports its equipment around the world, the security measures such as “double lock”, etc.

But what is the point of describing SAF’s perfection on paper when our property has already been impounded?  Excusable because this has happened only once in fifty years?

And our chief paper general even tries to deflect blame to the contractor, one that’s selected by his organisation.  Chief paper general Melvyn: “They must also apply for all necessary permits … The contractor has to be responsible for this.”

So, if it was APL’s oversight, SAF bears no responsibility for risking 9 multi-million dollar Terrex tanks which may be “melted down“?

Who will be held responsible if our 9 Terrex tanks are melted down?

What’s really troubling – Melvyn has contradicted himself and isn’t sure about what he  tells the media.

Melvyn: “The SAF also has strict measures when we transport ammunition or sensitive equipment – we don’t make transit stops, …”

As to why the ICVs were on an excursion to Xiamen and Hong Kong, Melvyn explains that “We don’t specify the route.  It’s purely commercial decision taken by APL.”

From these 2 statements, even an idiot can see that our chief paper general doesn’t know what has been happening:

“don’t specify the route” = “don’t make transit stops”?  If SAF doesn’t specify exactly how it wants APL to ship its equipment, how the hell does Melvyn know there were no transit stops?

Melvyn is also effectively saying that if it was APL’s “purely commercial decision” to make, say, 5 transit stops, SAF wouldn’t have been bothered.

It is clear to the public that the SAF has screwed up – some high ranking officers entrusted with the responsibility to ship our military equipment back in one piece weren’t even aware there were transit stops.

SAF’s failure should not be covered up or this will further erode public trust.

  • Mainstreet Citizens:

Only those political nuts would still want to be in self-denial mode and insist that the whole incident is not due to political reasons.
Anyway, they’re all followers, not strategists or great thinkers, no thanks to the type of leadership that Singapore is having.

PM Lee and his Ministers, as well as the paper general, knew they had stepped onto a dangerous mine, because of their stupidity, tried every tricks to downplay the issue. But SG citizens are very worried that this may lead to a longer and more complex issues. We fairly and squarely blame this incident on the incompetent and arrogant governing.

Even our late EP Ong Teng Cheong had difficulty trying to get information on our reserve! He was the Deputy PM before becoming the EP.

QUOTE “SAF’s failure should not be covered up or this will further erode public trust.”

PAP, MINDEF, PM Lee, can do whatever they want. Nobody cares. 70% make sure of it. Even if China sends warships here, put up trade embargo here. 70% dont care. Actually it is good time for China to make the first move. In light that Donald Trump has no idea what is going on. China can give explanation that, including PR/FT/Citizens, there are 90% Chinese, so might as well China take over. Malaysia already now good friends with China, what to complain about? Dont make any difference if Singapore under China rule or PAP rule. Both party will have open business deal with Malaysia. Actually with China hinterland, more business opportunity for both Malaysia and Indonesia if Singapore merge with China.

  • Stupidity knows no bounds:

The fiasco has exposed beyond any doubt the incompetence and arrogance of our excessively overpaid leaders. So obvious that all the big guns are now frantically trying to cover each other up and downplay the seriousness of the issue. Just imagine what will happen to the CEO of a commercial setup if he or the men under his charge makes such a major blunder. And yet our do-no-wrong leaders have the audacity to talk cock in the face of such clear mishandling of military logistics that involve foreign powers at such sensitive times. The PM should come clean and apologize to the people for the fiasco and causing us such embarrassment. The first person he should fire is Ng Eng Hen, his MoD. No need to wait for the reason why HK customs detained the armoured vehicles. Regardless of the reason, the ramifications are too far reaching to even contemplate, and could have easily been foreseen and avoided. Next, there should be a major shakeup in the SAF that must entail the removal and demotion the paper general Chief. We just can’t afford to have such a person commanding and directing our army in defense of our country when he can’t even oversee simple military logistics. The military training pact with Taiwan should also cease unless he wants China to give him another tight slap. Next time around we may a lot more to lose if we also factor in what is at stake for the Suzhou project and the amount of our money pumped into it.

Some years back, the US military accidentally shipped some nuclear bomb triggers to Taiwan. When the Chinese government found this out, at least i US general was removed from his post – I think he was the Chief of the US Air Force – and another high-ranking general too. And all probably because some other ranks way down the chain of command made the mistake. But the US had to send the strongest possible message to China that this was a genuine mistake, not a covert shipment of nuclear weapon parts to Taiwan.
In this case, which SAF general must go to assure China this incident was an honest mistake, nothing to diss on the One China policy?

    a. In economics, we learnt there are things that cannot be outsourced -defence, infrastructure…. We outsourced these transport to others and expect to also outsource responsibilities?. Would we be having such problem if NOL is not sold out? Look around, so many other things have been outsourced or even sold. I am concerned about our country.

    b. I had not too long ago saw a video by Taiwan with the PRC authorities scolding Singapore.
