S’pore govt loses 500K taxes for every citizen who migrates

However, after living there for so long, I realize everyone I know has left or leaving. Since 1997 Singapore has never recovered. The amounts of bull sinkees put up with from the govt is ever increasing. the ministers pay, its all bull. The list is endless and readers of TRE are fully well aware of it. I remember hearing economy double digit growth yet I see empty restaurant and stores closing all the time. On the roads, everyday someone cuts you off, or drives so badly, its like a war zone on the streets of SG. Again this list goes on.

Then one day in early 2004, I realized something. I cant see any future in Singapore. This was after seeing so many friends suffering in business, seeing firsthand many clients from many industries facing competition from India, China, and hearing in the market so and so company moving to china or malaysia, etc. Really if you stop and think about it, what future does Singapore have? although we were comfortable I was seriously considering a move.

The inability of the s’pore govt to take care of its own citizens is appalling. For every citizen who migrates, the govt loses half a million of tax revenue. Singapore’s govt culture has, for a long time, been “Govt must be right, cannot be seen to be wrong”, and these ex-singaporeans were immediately considered as “not loyal”, “quitters” . The question will be: who will remain in singapore to pay taxes when they dont get immediate benefits? The benefits are illusory in nature ( Assrt enhancement scheme). Judging from whats happening right now, former singaporean who quitted are in a better state now.

I can write a book on how much lousy Singapore is. But instead i will leave you with this thought. I left singapore because i saw no future and to avoid being a tax slave. In fact who does see a future in singapore? who? what future? It is up to you people to leave and
change your lives. If you dont, nothing will change. Its up to you.

I pay more tax in Australia but I get back more social welfare and tax rebate, end up I get more than I pay.

    Well said, writer.

This regime maxes its revenue in every imaginable and ridiculous ways.

In SG, they even charge you according to how many toilets you have. Ridiculous. No such thing in other countries.

Stupid 70% don’t realise that their children suffer eg high property prices and car prices.

Our fuel prices hover around $2 even though oil prices have plunged dramatically. Why no decrease? Only know how to increase?

Migrate if you can. At least for the sake of your children.

Stay behind and the greedy pigs keeping robbing you. The pigs are not happy to see you have too much disposal income.

Is the Govt so poor? No. Every year except during SARS and recessionary years, the Govt amassed budgetary surpluses.

Yee… I made a move 2 years ago and started a biz in China… you are correct…. now I’m back only for my fav local foods and family.
To my fellow citizens… leave if you can. Spore is a sinking ship for Sporeans! Sad I am but I am not lying. Ask yourself a simple question…. how many of your friends are Uber and Grab drivers now? How many lost their jobs and are driving taxi now?
    Now you see the pict?

RESPONSE: Even S’pore 1st Olympic Gold had to come from a US-based S’pore-born expat. His glory came at a high family cost (sold their home) & great personal sacrifice (away since 14 yrs old) but everyone freeloaded at his expense after he won. Even KFC president shamelessly wore his gold medal like it was his own.
On the other hand; the China-B TT team disguised as S’pore’s own, the fallout post-olympic look like dirty smelly laundry being washed in public. So much resources poured into them but their Olympic performance were as limp as wet Chinese noodles! They wanted to prove a point with their weak performance but ended up on the sidewalk – discarded! Mercenaries will always be mercenaries inspite of what they say. Don’t be fooled.

  • Thinking loud:

Singapore is the only country who labelled her overseas ex-citizens as quitters.

Other countries think this group is a valuable resource to draw on …

It is this petty attitude that Singapore does not get any friends in any corner of the world. We only have friends as long as we are paying.

With the rise of China, Singapore is doomed to diminish little by little.

PAP’s attitude just make things happen alot faster.

To migrate to other countries is not a talk cock sing song thingy. Planning and determination to succeed in a new country is crucial. Moreover, many countries are closing their doors as I write.

Most Singaporeans I relate to don’t have the guts to migrate. Talk only.

As in most situations, Singaporeans like to talk and act big. Very much like their white masters.

  • Never a PAP voter:

I clearly recall, sometimes in the 80s, Australia have open door invitation for Singaporean to migrate there. The simplest answer was given. The years and money spend to educate Singaporeans, are money which Australia government don’t need to pay when they move there.

In Singapore we have excuses like needing to have a Degree, need to have some special abilities, special IQ, just to have a decent job. Even so they come up excuses like we need to be faster, cheaper, stupider. Until really 70% become stupider, and less productive.

  • GKS Father of Modern Singapore:

I disagree with you, Singapore has never been the same after we lost Dr Goh Keng Swee. We have replaced the whole cabinet with mini LKY, yesmen who can recite LKY words, unfortunately the secret sauce to our success is GKS and not LKY, so 20 years later, it’s obvious that we have been screwed.

  • Anon:

    @thinking loud;

Yes, Singapore is probably the only country where people leaving are called ‘quitters’. I remember even being told off by a taxi driver that I was ‘disloyal’ for working abroad when I returned fo a visit in the late 1990s. No doubt he had been brainwashed by the leaders even then.

Loyal Singaporeans living abroad are often mini ‘ambassadors’ for Singapore; we are more likely to bristle with indignation at unfair criticisms and come to the defence almost instinctively when unfairly criticised. This much more so than Singaporean’s in Singapore.

If we are critical of some policies by the govt, it is precisely because we care very much about our country.

But as they say, A prophet is never appreciated in his own country

    @Gonzales…;
No one said that everyone who supports the govt is brainwashed. I said ‘no doubt the taxi driver (from comfort) had been brainwashed. It is a residual defensiveness that leads you to generalise something I was very specific about.

In the history of progress of civilisation, be it social or scientific, NEGATION had always played a critical role. In the case of the latter It happened with the Corpenican revolution, and with Einstein’s Theory of Relativity. Criticism, constructive, that is, paves the route for progress.

Living abroad, in my case for over 30 years, one learns about other ways if life and other outlooks, both political and social and realises that some things in Singapore need not be what they are. For me, it is about govts policy choices. I am less concerned about which Party governs, although obviously, there are close relationships between the two. For me the policies of the 60s, 70s and even 80s were right for those times, even though there were political costs. I cannot say the same for today. It is plainly obvious how much things have changed and what I see on my lengthy visits each year. That is why I believe the policies pursued are wrong.

“Tail that wags the Dog!” – Govt & Economy are 2 very different animals. Govt’s role in the economy is to regulate unfair business practices; protect worker’s rights; provide public goods in public transportation, affordable medical & healthcare & both relevant & affordable educational system; pass good laws that promote industrial formation & job creation & maintain social safety nets in times of recessions & economic downturns.
It is the ECONOMY that creates enterprise formation, provides innovation products & creative services & generates job creation.
Goh Keng Swee was a good administrator but he was a product of fortunate times. He wasn’t a Magician. S’pore’s economic architect was Dr Albert Winsemius (A Dutch Post-War Reconstruction Economist) & basically GKS executed the Winsemius plan ie. HDB; EDB; JTC, etc. Then, the economic drivers in S’pore were the foreign banks; MNCs & international companies; S’pore’s GLCs & SWF footprint continue to be small in terms of job creation & poor in terms of wages (Top heavy pay & Meritocratic structure). Very few Smart but non-Meritocratic people would want to work in GLCs.
Today even with a new GKS available to S’pore; S’pore needs a new Dr. Winsemius to formulate a new Economic Policy or otherwise reduce their tentacles over S’pore economy & let the people take charge. The STATUS QUO path that is being taken will end in tears! S’pore needs radical educational reforms & less govt control11.

No evidence of change is forthcoming. Lots of IBs present in TRE stifling meaningful discussions with 1-liners; homophobic rants; sexual deviant remarks, etc & renewal of vows by Newbie Ministers of Meritocracy Policy when it is clearly failing. Post-2011 GE failings masked by vote-buying (PGP; throttling open-door influx by managing numbers; MSM propaganda & jawboning from ‘S’pore is for everyone’ to ‘we care for locals’. At the end; CHANGES LOOK ELUSIVE IN S’PORE!
