PM Lee: The quality of our Parliamentary debate is high

By international standards, our Parliament is less dramatic than some others, but the quality of our debate is high.

This week many government MPs have spoken, offering criticisms, seeking explanations, championing passionate causes. But they were not the only ones with something to say.

NMP Mr Kok Heng Leun spoke on how arts and culture can help bond and build resilience in our society, at a time of upheaval and uncertainty. (bit.ly/2mlFmOa)

As an economist, NMP Prof Randolph Tan is tracking our restructuring efforts closely. He pointed out that we already have many R&D personnel and industrial robots, for our size. Hence we need internationalisation to scale up, and to expand our economic space. (bit.ly/2m4VW1W)

NMP Mr Ganesh Rajaram’s childhood anecdote of his mother’s dignified response in the face of prejudice reminded us how we should behave and treat one another – with graciousness, empathy, and kindness. (bit.ly/2llMpGW)

These three NMPs exemplify the purpose of the Nominated MP scheme. They are not in politics, and would not otherwise have had a voice in Parliament. But they have brought their expertise and experience to bear, and enriched the public discourse.

Some opposition MPs made good speeches too. Mr Low Thia Kiang set out succinctly how the strategic landscape is changing, and how this challenges our foreign policy. He asked: how can we protect and advance the national interest of our multi-racial country? (bit.ly/2mnNde8)

It is natural that the government and opposition will have different political values, policies and programmes. But when it comes to foreign policy and international relations, all parties must share the same basic premises, and speak up for Singapore.

This is how Parliamentary democracy is supposed to work. Sometimes we fall short of this ideal, but in the case of these four speeches, we have not done badly.

You can click on the link below to watch the various speeches from the MPs and NMPs.

  • Ah Peng Kia:

At a time when Singaporeans have heard nothing but PM’s yes-men endorsing the 30% water price increase, LHL is trying to show you “other people” are allowed to talk in Parliament too. Honestly, I don’t care who talks, what I want is robust debate of ideas and policies that AFFECT our daily lives which cost of living currently is the biggest issue. PAP dominates the Parliament and can pass and tweak policies at a whim just because they can. They squash meaningful debate on important matters, then tel you they listen on small matters. Singaporeans, you should feel indignant and angry because your PM is saying you are small fry. Small things they can let you talk, big things you shut up and follow them blindly coz they know best.

PM Lee, let me tell you this, no matter how you try to paint you “listen” to other views”, actions will always speak louder than words. Your smoke screen may work some times with some peole, but it will not work all the time with all people. Your dad may have told you Singaporeans are dafts, but I tell you not all remain dafts forever.

Anyway, why would you care, the one who are clever enough to see through PAP’s vices have migrated. You would be happy coz now, you are actually not PM of tiny Singapore, you are actually PM of little united nations on the red dot.

  • quality of debate very low:

Then why is he afraid to televise them live or allow us freedom to criticize those debates?

The mainstream media would either not print them or you will be marked (and harassed) for being a critic.

Likewise, he has been trying to muzzle the alternative for the same reasons. Or for criticizing him and the PAP too, of course. Much like what happened to Roy Ngerng, Teo Soh Lung, Han Hui Hui, Amos Yee, etc. etc. Or Ai Takagi and Yang Kaihen.

The truth is that quality of the debates is very low, if you compare them to those of other democracies.

  • WP lets it's supporters down:

The LTK led WPs in parliament is a big let down! The main aim for voters to vote in opposition is to speak up for them,, oppose unpopular policies implemented by the PAP, highlight the short comings of the G, citizens’ grievances and their problems. People suffer under the current poor economic situation, where many lost their jobs and businesses are closing down or relocating elsewhere, yet the PAP continues to let in FTs and came out with increases in parking charges, gas and electricity charges, Sc&c and the latest a whopping 39% in water price. How to ? What did the WP MPs done in parliament debates? Not speaking out strongly on the peoples’ grievances and sufferings, where are all their promises made during GEs, all big bullshits! Sinkies are not interested in how the G deal with foreign policies, the culling of chickens, climate change and what not, what we want is for WP to speak up strongly on the bread and butter issues, allthe increases in charges, parking, sc&c, gas, electricity, water…… Heard that income tax and GST increases are next to be implemented! If SDP’s CSC were to be in parliament as an elected MP today, we would see the difference definitely, the PAP would not have a easy passage to ram down all the unjustified charges down our throats. The poor performance of the WP MPs in parliament all this while and with the fiascos they had created in their town council issues, many feel that this is would be their last term in parliament, good riddens, there is no loss, what difference would there be? Now we hear that PM is praising LTK and his gang for their speeches in parliament, a PAP B team outfit, ,so no surprise!

  • Murali's speech on h moustache:

He may be good at regurgitating the textbooks for the exams, but he does not sound very intelligent or able when he speaks. Like he said the other day that we have freedom of expression and freedom of the press because we have access to high speed internet! Can you believe he actually said that???

Ask any citizen in any other country in the world (with the exception of the brainwashed citizens of North Korea and Singapore) including housewives and laborers and they will be able to tell you that without democracy or good oppositions in Parliament, you will not have good debates, let alone robust ones.

Was there any debate on that extremely important and crucial Population White paper, let alone a good one? Was any PAP MP able to articulate? And I am not referring only to the PWP. Don’t we all know they are all ‘yes men’ only there to serve their own self interests?

Now, do not be surprised that he will come up with the retort that we have democracy, only that our citizens did not vote for the oppositions. That Singaporeans think that the PAP is best. That Murali is more impressive than Dr. Chee. That was why he was elected (over Dr. Chee). Of course, he will omit that the msm censored or removed Dr. Chee’s impressive speeches and doctored (yes, read also censored) Murali’s opening election rally speech delving a good part of it speaking about his moustache or his looks.

Dont know why LTK wants to be in politics. Politician, especially when you are leading am opposition, must have big ambition. If you cannot create any positive impact in people’s lives, you might as well quit politics. Perhaps, the MP allowance is so attractive, cannot join PAP, can get into parliament in blue, ok liah. Just dont be a pain to PAP, at least can stay long long, as PAP needs to show the world we are a democracy.

HOW DO YOU SURVIVE IN A NON-WELFARE COUNTRY

I know that you probably feel helpless as a citizen or individual as you cannot do anything about establishment using of laws and majority votes in parliament to enrich and protect themselves rather than the people they are supposed to serve.

But should we just leave such abuses alone and dismiss it as “it does not affect me personally.”

To my dear fellow citizens, what will happenn to this country or your life if you are afraid to speak up on such abuse of laws or power by anyone to benefit themselves whoever he or they may be.

How are you to ensure there will be jobs for yourself or your children? How do you survive the constant raising of taxes direct and indirect and fees or water tax in this country? The mainstream and even social media are afraid too to publish posts like this or your feedback when you are sacked from your jobs with fake excuses to protect the establishment in charge.

Let’s be fair to Sylvia Lim. She has been the one who has been at the forefront spearheading the debate as the “devil’s advocate” on the most difficult issues, such as the presidential elections, the contempt of court debate, the PA in Singapore politics and the appointment of Hri Kumar Nair just to name a few. In fact, she has been taking up some of the more challenging debates and assignments in parliament in spearheading the debate on these issues.
