TR Emeritus launches Free Classifieds section

We are pleased to announce the launch of our Free Classifieds section per our editorial dated 5th January this year. [ LINK ]

As promised, we have reserved a Free Plan for readers who require simple listings with 1 attached image and for a short period of time (14 days). Existing VMS members are also entitled to one Classified listing per month (Free or Premium), just login as a member and then submit a listing without making payment.

Several Premium Plans are also available for readers who require more images to be attached and want their listings to remain for a longer duration (90 days). However, there are token charges for such plans, ranging from SGD$2.00 to SGD$10.00 – which will help offset the cost of running the TR Emeritus (TRE) website. Payments via PayPal only.

Current plans available for classified listing on TRE.

Regardless of the Plan chosen, registration is NOT required and anyone can submit a classified ad for listing on TR Emeritus (TRE). Your email address is NOT available to the public and can only be contacted via our website with our form.

Considering that TRE is basically a community website, our plans are designed with personal and small businesses in mind, hence a duration for ad display is implemented.

Unlike large classifieds site where a simple ad for the sale of a mobile is left on the page for years, our system will automatically delete and purge any ads once it has reached its chosen display duration, hence freeing up valuable space and allowing newer listings more chances to appear on prominent pages. However, Premium listings can be renewed before expiry.

Access to the Classifieds section is on the top of our website, 3rd button on the navigation bar marked “Classifieds” or via http://classifieds.tremeritus.com. Please feel free to spread the word and list your classified ads on our website.

All comments and suggestions as to how to improve our website and the classifieds section are welcome.

[email protected] Emeritus

* Our tech is currently looking at enhancing the Classifieds module to establish a credit system for existing VMS members to post classified ads for free (regardless of plans). Please allow some time for this to be implemented.

  • make tab more prominent:

You want to make the classified tab more prominent. Otherwise, many readers, especially many new or infrequent readers might miss it.

I suggest that you have that tab in a bright or prominent contrasting colour (florescent red or fuchsia, for example), plus another additional separate publicity space (also with prominent contrrasting colours) on the right column perhaps just above the Sponsored Advertisement box or in between that box and the Most Recent Comments box.

You want to attract more advertisers. And advertisers want their ads to be read or seen. So you want to design it in a way that prompts or entices the visitor to click onto the ads.

  • make tab more prominent::

Another good way to attract the attention of readers to the classifieds section or to entice them to click on it would be to actually show a short list of ads on the right column similar to the Most Recent Comments box.

Thank you for your feedback. It is indeed some good suggestions worth implementing.

  • Boh Bian = No Change = 没变:

I curious to know which business not afraid to advertise.

This is a good start to remove fear.

Thus far, for the last 50 years, sgreans everyday have no solution against papo.

So they say boh bian which means no solution.

No wonder lack innovation and creativity.

Top in maths and science but no solutions.

  • help start ball rolling:

Before you garner the critical mass to have the momentum to get the ball rolling on its own, you could help by encouraging clicks on the classifieds by showing the first ads directly on the right column. Otherwise readers might get tired searching for the ads if they don’t find any when they clicked on the category tabs.

If there are no advertisers yet, you can start by showing the sample ads (to simulate real ads). Have a (longer) list of samples by displaying different categories, for example.

You may be able to help start the ball rolling too by offering free ads for all categories for a limited period of time (the first three or six months, for example). You could also invite regular readers to help start the ball rolling. The flea market is one easy way to participate.

As with all websites that have been able to attract a huge following, they nearly all started off by offering free access or services to attain the critical mass.

Tech: Your suggestion is noted and will be implemented shortly. Thank you.

  • three month free ads:

I suggest you start the free ads for all categories for only three months for now. You could always extend that period depending on the rate of response. The shorter period may prompt would-be advertisers to feel more urgency than if it were a six-month free period although I’m not sure if that would make any difference since the cost of advertising is already so low. However, advertisers also measure the worth of advertising (or the returns on it) not only on the monetary cost but also on the hassle of putting up the ads vis-a-vis potential visitor volume.

  • shy advertiser:

It may help (to encourage some advertisers) to offer the option of hiding the advertiser’s personal contact information from general public view.

In such cases, when a visitor responds to an ad, the interested visitor would have to facilitate his/her contact info through an email link (with an identification code corresponding to that specific ad) which will automatically direct the interested visitor’s response email to the advertiser.

Of course, the visitor can skip this step if the advertiser chooses to show his contact info in public.

You would have to state the availability of this option upfront for those advertisers who wish to guard their privacy.

Tech: Telephone are optional and the email address is only available. Potential buyers can contact the advertiser directly by clicking on the link ONLY on our website. Hope this clarifies.

  • lasting publicity:

Be the first to advertise. The first advertisements will receive a more than proportionate (and lasting) share of attention.

  • rukidding:

You know those “Meet ups” forum from the web being organized ……mostly quite poor response.

I believe TR should start a “Meet up” section focusing on “Start ups” and “Crowd funding” .

This would help attract New young Melliniums to visit this TR site as well as help those PMETs who has “lost jobs” to start something new easily,…..especially people with common tech interest ….”ideals” and “fundings” !

    Forget about Gov’t fundings….all BS !

  • cannot see image:

I cannot see the photos of the Shareme Headphone/Karaoke Sound Bar ad. Or rather, the images seemed to be taking ages in downloading. I could see those of your sample ads though.

So it could be that the sizes of the images submitted were too large. You’d probably have to restrict the size of the images submitted. The best format would be in gif.

  • eyesore:

Good to see the classified ads displayed on the right column. This visibility does help prompt or attract clicks.

However, I find the description on the ads a bit of an eyesore for the disproportionate size of the fonts compared to the width of the column, as well as for having the (description) lines being too close together.

You could perhaps use a smaller font but have them in bold instead and also have a more proportional vertical spacing between the lines.

Although this comment may not seem very important, every little refinement goes some way in helping to make the ads more attractive and make it look more professional too.

Tech: Thank you for your feedback. I will see if I can change the original code to achieve that.

  • eyesore:

You could also centralize the images and remove (or block) the remaining lateral spaces so that there will be no room for the description lines to fit in and so (the description) will have to start below the (first?) image. That should make it look much neater.

  • fill void:

If there are no new takers in the pipeline and your column looks bare, which in turn makes it look less encouraging for advertisers, maybe you want to fill the void by recycling some of the old expired ads (until such time as the advertiser instructs you to remove them) to encourage or entice new participants. You may have to do so until you are able to amass some critical mass before you abandon it.
