Although there have been coffee shop gossips by Uncles and Aunties that the next President of Singapore would most likely be Mdm Halimah Yacob from the People’s Action Party (PAP), nothing is concrete as there is no hard evidence to support the gossips.
However, that may not be entirely true because Uncles and Aunties in the coffee shops will be able to confirm their suspicion in as early as May, without having to wait for the official polling day in September 2017.
With Presidential Election slated for September 2017 as confirmed by Minister (Kee Chiu) Chan Chun Sing, a potential candidate must then file his/her application from 1st June 2017 onwards.
Since a Presidential Candidate cannot be a member of any political party, if Mdm Halimah Yacob wants to contest, she has to officially resign from the PAP prior to 1st June 2017 (later if she wants to, but not likely since there are ‘ground work’ to be done).
There is of course no reason for her to resign from the PAP if she is not eyeing for the Presidential post considering the supposed millions she is being paid as a Speaker of Parliament and a Minister, no?
Therefore if many moons come till late May, should Mdm Halimah Yacob were to tender her resignation from the PAP, chances are extremely high that Singaporeans and the whole world would have to address her as “Mdm President” effective September 2017 (the current President Tony Tan will see his term ends by 31 August 2017).
With no clear contenders in sight and the ‘tip’ offered by Minister Chan, who wanna bet she won’t be “Mdm President” if Singapore Pools were to accept such bets?
* For those who may not know this, Mdm Halimah Yacob is the ONLY PAP Member of Parliament that actually addressed the readers directly many many moons ago on this website, when it was Temasek Review (TR). That post is buried deep in the archive and you need a VMS membership to view it (if it has not already been purged).
We would like to thank
Mdm President Mdm Halimah Yacob for her kind gesture.
