Singapore Parliament Norm: Always ‘Half Empty’

Our tax payers are paying top dollar for ministers and MPs to represent our interests in parliament. But after watching the recent footages of parliamentary debates, I notice the parliament is full of empty seats. Can anyone tell me why? Is this the kind of robust debates that the PAP keeps telling voters that we don’t need oppositions anymore, we can count on their MPs and NMPs to do the robust debates. And to my observations, it is always Workers Party and their NCMPs raising questions on the policies, especially on the 30% water price hike proposal. So who are these MPs who are collecting $16000 a month and always missing in action? It looks like MP job is quite lucrative, just show face when ask to vote on policy and at other times, do not have to show up and still collect fat pay cheque for their part time work.

Secondly, I notice white party MPs don’t really ask questions. Aren’t they supposed to defend our interest and debate to ensure policies benefit the mass? This is a very strange parliament, MPs don’t ask much questions, to the extent one even said raising water price is to create awareness. Don’t you think its a joke?

Next, why we have so many foreign bornt ministers who never served NS or been doctrined sufficiently? So perhaps we should have a FT PM in future?! You hear strange answers from these bunch, such that they even tell you water price hike will not ripple effect other basic necessities. Even an “O” level student will know this is not true. This is the kind of quality ministers we have in parliament?

Even the dumb man on the street knows the hike of water is to build more desalination plants to cater to 10M population. All other price hikes of basic necessities, GST, COE, Satellite ERPs et cetera are probably to help build infrastructure for 10M and or to cover the bigger black hole of massive losses?

This country is getting strange, half empty parliaments, one sided debates, stupid illogical answers and can win 70% mandate. 70%, is this what you want?

When they do present themselves is when they proposed to raise prices like water, electricity, oil and what not. Better they are empty by 2/3 after they next election.

  • PM praised LTk:

Did you read that PM praised LTK for his speeches made in parliament? Why not, LTK is smart, not getting himself into trouble with law suits and meanwhile continues to collect his part time allowance of 16 K every month! This is a sorry state of oppositon in SG, do you think that Sinkies still Barbour any hope of having voices in parliament to speak out for them, to fight for their rights , voice their grievances ? You see what LTK and his gang had done when PAP rammed down all sorts of increase down our throats:- parking, gas electricity, Sc& C , water, diesel tax, and more to come next:- GST, income tax, transport fares. WP supporters said WP could be more effective in parliamnent if more of them are voted in! Sure? a bunch of jiak liow bees , we only help to have more of them getting the $16 Ks!

Their MPs are even paid a few 1000$s for each parliament seating which is peanuts to them all. As they all got their own vocation businesses incomes that are very much larger! Besides the some annual income of $16,000 x 12 = $192,000 already serve as a greater income than most average & median income Singaporeans who voted for them in 2015 for their September 11 4th world class GE. Why fourth world in his past tense papa’s declared 1st world w/o or with nary of a convincing definition of he having brought SG to a No. 1 Fist-World of always being PEE And POO upon fellow citizens not in their elitist folds or usable henchmen?

A MP is a part-time job in SG. $160,000 a year is extra “peanuts” for some of them. Full-time job is somewhere else. Without a near equal number of opposition MPs in Parliament, the ruling party knows it will carry the day. What debate? Just push a bill through and have it rubber-stamped.

It is sad to see Parliament sitting always half empty at best for most sessions. It is not like Parliament is sitting whole year round. Only few times a year. MPs and Ministers must attend to hear and debate issues passed. This hardly anyone scene gives a bad image to our leader. Can you imagine we have group meetings at workplace but no one bother to turn up. How would your CEO think? How would the Chairperson feel? Halima Yaacob must feel stupid to face few members during these sessions.

For sure, will not be replaced by FT, almost sure, every term get elected. $1 million a term for an MP, and average $10M a term for a Minister. Every motion gets passed. Just wayang a little and there, and thanks to the few NMP and the Team B boys in blue, the PAPig MPs’ jobs are made a lot easier. When Lee Kayu was still kicking around and attending Parliament, attendance was almost FULL! Those regular absentees attended NOT because they were interested to speak out or debate any important issue…..these MFs attended because of the presence of Tua Kee Lee Kayu!

Smack of total lack of discipline in pap MPs. Question is how come this is indulgently condoned by their loonytoon boss. Basically why the heck he wants to care. They are not supposed to take their mp job seriously anyway as if they do, then they cant be good yesman and ballcarrier to him. No he cant afford them to get serious or he wont be able to do his work as he will have to spend his time thinking how to fix them u know.

So awol or awl or falling asleep all boleh if thats what they like and make them happy . Need to keep them happy to ensure their absolute loyalty to him. Anyway who is he to refuse them tsuch pleasure when he isnt exactly exemplary himself and his badass papa set the badderest eg with his poor attendance and the longest absenteeism record for a parliamentarian anywhere in the world.

  • That 1961 speech killed JFK:

John F. Kennedy prepared his own death warrant. The speech he made in his first 100 days in office, and the Executive Order he signed in an attempt to eliminate the Federal Reserve System about two years later, sealed his fate.

    By Vandita – December 7, 2016.

In his speech before the American Newspaper Publishers Association on April 27, 1961, John F. Kennedy talked about ‘a monolithic and ruthless conspiracy’ and ‘secret societies’ that rule the United States in particular, and the world in general. Excerpts:

“The very word “secrecy” is repugnant in a free and open society; and we are as a people inherently and historically opposed to secret societies, to secret oaths and to secret proceedings. We decided long ago that the dangers of excessive and unwarranted concealment of pertinent facts far outweighed the dangers which are cited to justify it.

“For we are opposed around the world by a monolithic and ruthless conspiracy that relies on covert means for expanding its sphere of influence — on infiltration instead of invasion, on subversion instead of elections, on intimidation instead of free choice, on guerrillas by night instead of armies by day.

“It is a system which has conscripted vast human and material resources into the building of a tightly knit, highly efficient machine that combines military, diplomatic, intelligence, economic, scientific and political operations. Its preparations are concealed, not published. Its mistakes are buried not headlined. Its dissenters are silenced, not praised. No expenditure is questioned, no rumor is printed, no secret is revealed.”

It is said the speech JFK made in his first 100 days in office was apparently the one that sealed his fate. He didn’t want to censor the news, to stifle dissent, to cover up government mistakes or to withhold from the press and the public the facts they deserved to know. He wanted the press to inform, to arouse, to reflect, to lead, and to even anger public opinion. The hard hitting speech obviously didn’t go down well with the “system” and the powerful elite at the helm who felt threatened with JFK’s ideas.

“When Kennedy called for a return of America’s currency to the gold standard, and the dismantling of the Federal Reserve System — he actually minted non-debt money that does not bear the mark of the Federal Reserve; when he dared to actually exercise the leadership authority granted to him by the U.S. Constitution…Kennedy prepared his own death warrant. It was time for him to go.“ — Colonel James Gritz

  • be quiet looney:

I think PAP believes it has absolute control of the voters, so no need to act anymore. Now, they dont pretend anymore, they said the deer is a horse, 70% would also say its a horse. Empty parliament, price hikes, all sort of nonsense, 70% gladly accept without questions. This gives PAP the balls to do all these bs to Singapore, an empty parliament and yet they claim robust debates.

Singaporeans are hopeless, so many locals affected but still dont dare to speak the mind and even vote against PAP.

This country is sinking, thanks for a party who doesnt wear clothes and a stupid naive set of voters.

Does Parliament keep record of attendance? Any roll call before each sitting? Did anyone even bother to check the attendance list to find out who were actually present? How many absences are allowed in a year for valid reasons only (e.g. serious illness, bereavement, maternity)? An employee who habitually arrive late or fail to show up for work can expect to lose his job. If students can be disciplined and dismissed from school for failing to attend classes, can MPs be disciplined and removed from office for not attending Parliament without a valid reason?
