Tragedy shows up the BS that Singapore moving beyond grades

This tragedy reported on Friday:

The death of an 11-year-old boy, who fell 17 floors from his bedroom window on the day he was to show his parents his mid-year examination results, was found to be “a deliberate act of suicide” on Friday (Oct 21).

In his findings, State Coroner Marvin Bay urged parents and educators to remind children that “their efforts in study may not always yield a commensurate result, and also that such failures are transient or temporary events”.

He added: “Parents and educators should also constantly reassure them that they will always be there to help the child through each stumble, winding turn and setback in their education journey.”

Government policies are moving away from parents and students’ unhealthy obsession with grades and entry to top schools and want to put more emphasis on the importance of values.

Schools have been encouraged, especially for the early elementary years, to scrap standardised examinations and focus on the development of the whole child.

Its ‘good’ (pardon me with no undue respect except for PAP Ultra basstards) such things the PAP always welcome if not the PAP CANNOT LEARNT LESSONS and MOVE ON.

Am I wrong – took 5 adult policemen, in Benjamin’s case, all easily TWICE his age, to indirectly cause his death (obviously there cant be any prove because inherently human courts and judges are entirely fools herewithal ). How about PAP approved risky mountain climbing for kids as leadership training, except their own.

It is ridiculous for those in charge to expect people to drop,
Overnight, a belief that’s been preached and drummed into them
    for more than 50 years.
That belief: Only your academic results matter….
Without A’s you cant get anywhere. Indeed, Everything’s been
geared to recognise only top students. Esp in the last 30, 40 yrs.

It’s been the case not just at school but also at work. At work,
    amazingly,
meritocracy means you are seen as good because you had had
A’s in school/uni. Whether you can do and perform well in your job
has been beside the point. No A’s? There’s a ceiling you hit.
Only in the last couple of weeks, have we been told that “performance”
is now included under meritocracy!!! Whether it is actually the
case, whether it will actually be practised, is another matter.
As for leadership qualities, being able to handle people, dun care wan!

Meanwhile, all those fellas sitting in the cabinet, heading GLCs etc –
right down to very recent appointees — were picked becos of their academic
grades and the fact that they’re good at saying Yessir.
    Can they perform?
Going by the results we’re seeing now, listening to their suggestions/how
they explain and argue things out — going by the fact they Expect pple
to change long-held beliefs Overnight — the answer appears to be
    NO!
    A resounding No!!
These people don’t have a clue!!! They have only high grades….

These so-called top brains need to bear in mind they May see change in
10 to 20 years’ time. But Only if they actually practise what they preach.

Eh, goondu, saying is not enough. SHOW us you mean what you say!!
Meanwhile, instead of lecturing/talking down, plse go back to kindergarten!!

Well said, ” Disgusted “. The half century of drumming in the notion that person’s worth depends on his academic scores and how much money he can collect is well ingrained into each cohorts since ’65.
