Singaporeans left speechless by our cock-talking education minister

Ong Ye Kung is making himself look like a fool again when he anyhow claims our “Education system is going through an overwhelming adjustment”. CNA

Our education system was designed to benefit PAP elites and any meaningful change will remove such benefits. If our system is based on meritocracy and not solely on academic qualifications, where would most of the jiak liao bee scholars be today? Would the children of book smart PAP elites find employment outside a non government-linked company?

There will not be any meaningful change in our education system, much less Ong’s imaginary “overwhelming adjustment”.

Ong: “Singapore’s education system is going through an “overwhelming adjustment” to prepare the young for a changing world … doing things differently from before”.

PAP is a party which has been applying last century’s solutions to today’s problems. It is a party which is resistant and least adaptable to change. How then does PAP “prepare the young for a changing world”? Talking cock right?

Ong claims that he cannot effect big changes by simply “pumping in another billion dollars” to build another polytechnic or university. Instead, Ong says the way to go is “… uncovering students’ talents, developing them to the fullest”.

Does it mean that the MOE has not been uncovering students’ talents or developing them only half way?

Of concern is Ong’s plan to restructure SIM University into the sixth autonomous university. When public institutions are restructured, it can mean only one thing – fees will be increased at a higher rate.

(Recall that after public hospitals were restructured, medical fees shot through the roof. Anyone who had gone for an operation in a public hospital in the 1980s should know the huge difference.)

The government would of course again anyhow claim that SIM Uni will be ‘corporatised as not-for-profit companies’ as they did in 2005 for NUS and NTU. But the fact is, fees have been increasing faster than the inflation rate.

According to Leong Sze Hian, tuition fees for normal courses at NTU and NUS were less than $1000 in 1987. After NUS and NTU hiked fees to $7650 in 2013, Leong asked if fees had been increasing 7.5% per annum during the last 26 yearslink

Is Ong hinting at generating revenue for the government through another fee hike?

As long as PAP elites are in control, rest assured there will be no “overwhelming adjustment”.   This useless minister talking cock again must have left many speechless.

Life is the greatest teacher, and the world is the greatest classroom. So long as there are schisms to undermine students through streaming and class divide this country’s students will continue to fail and exploit each other than to progress in a cohesive manner. So long as the mediocre Ministry of Education are willing to prove that their disgusting existence is necessary where in a world where information is available at the fingertips I would say that the education of the students in this country is a failure.

And you have Chan CS another millionaire ex paper general turned minister who has never spent a day in doing business teaching businessmen how to turn around during the current poor economy! You think businessmen will listen to him, what credentials or track record he has to talk about business. As union chief and inview of the current scenario, where many Sinkies are being retrenched he should be spending more time finding ways to help the. Jobless find new jobs. Isn’t he paid millions to do this rather than talking about business where nobody will take heed of his advice! Getting millions from tax payers but unable to help them when they are out of job?

  • Not speechless:

Yes, Ong does spout absurdities. And he does it each time he
opens his mouth. In fact, it’s become a norm for him, and he’s
    sounding so like Donald Trump.

One good thing though — listening to him makes very clear tt
the education system, the one he went through, does not work.
But whether someone who came thru this system is capable of
seeing what needs to be changed, is another matter.

It is highly unlikely we will see “overwhelming adjustment”. And
we actually do, it’s pretty doubtful the PAP will be able to cope
with the people that real and needed changes produce. They’ll
soon revert to same old same old.

PS: TRE eds, how about getting the name of Philip Ang’s blog right??

  • Scholar System is Debunked!:

Its true. The Scholar system has been successfully debunked.

    Just use this logic :

    1. Since the birth of human civilisation, the most Capable, Competent, Intelligent, Successful humans in the history of humans are mostly non-scholars. The Vast Majority of them are non-scholars.

    2. Top in maths and science but where are the Top inventions by Native singaporeans?
    There is a mismatch!
I intentionally use the word Native singaporeans in order to stop them from twisting words and statistics by using new citizens or PRs.

With the above 2 FACTs of the universe, there is no way the Scholar system is not debunked.
I have deflowered the scholar system.

The real world knowledge in any field is exponentially greater than whatever degrees you have studied.
A grad of engineering cannot troubleshoot and fix a faulty circuit board.
i can go on and on.

How many uni professors have top in the world inventions?

Well no one except the PAP ever said these jokers were smart or eloquent. If you look at it they are all just reading from a prepared script.

Ong may be education minister but what does he really know about the department he is boss of? If all the past cannot make it scholars have shown, absoulutely nothing at all. He is just there as a puppet for his party like the rest of his colleagues. Sure the PAP exaggerates the capabilities of its people by saying they are the best in the land, are part of the next generation of leaders and so on. I’m not sure how many out there actually feel they can trust this next generation of leaders because I sure don’t.

  • Still "picking-the-winner":

Nothing has changed. PAP is still in its “pick-the-winner” mode as shown by OYK’s statement: “… uncovering students’ talents, developing them to the fullest”. It continues to pick the future “elite” which it co-opts into the (PAP) system” by giving them university scholarships. This locks them in for at least 6 years and, most important, it shuts their mouth. That is why Singapore (and Singaporeans) are in shit with stagnant wages, low productivity, less job security, sky-high prices and depleted retirement savings (after paying for over-priced HDB flat and private property). PAP office holders and top civil servants don’t care because they are paid million $ salaries – the highest in the world.

  • A robust change needed:

Do you realize most of the young these days have no respect for their elders. They tend to be disinterested and inward-looking and rather quick in dismissing the elderly. Is this the result of our system that somehow emphasizes too much on materialism. Children are geared and encouraged to study hard to go for high qualifications to land high paying jobs obviously. We have apparently lost our directions of the noble purpose of education.
Singapore is not the place for opportunities for truly natural intellect and sports talents and thinkers to realize and to grow to their full potential. For late bloomers it is a forgone dead end. They do not stand a chance; philosophers, religious thinkers, creative intellectuals, bold constructive critics. Late bloomers are the hardest hit, they just fade away, stifled into nothingness.
We are renown and tops for kiasuism and kiasiism, aren’t we. That’s our contribution for the century.
We have this stupid outdated instrument of measuring capability and intelligence by the scores in your examinations. The higher your marks the more intelligent and capable you must be. That’s the set measurement and standard over here.
Wonder how Bill Gates or Steve Jobs would make out if they had been born here.
Many are simply afraid to express their true honest views.
How are we going to fit into the challenges of this new age.
No wonder we need foreign talents to lead our organizations and set-ups. We do not have many of our own with that kind of thinking-out-of-the-box, agile and daring and highly competitive intelligent mindsets, to cope with the fast moving changes taking place all over the world.
Our locals just don’t fit in.
Just listen to the conversations at our gatherings and you cannot help feeling that people seems to be hiding their thoughts.
We have evolved and cause to create a very individualistic self-interested society.
Neighbors don’t talk to each other.

Yup. In total agreement. In fact most foreign employers will simply dismiss Singaporean grads as to docile by the book and requires lots of hand holding because they’ve never had initiative.
Why not spend the billion dollars in portfolio and task based learning like other countries? Sure rote and memorization has it place but it shouldn’t be the only methodology.

  • Sr Citizen:

There are four pillars to sustain a middle class in any globally connect economy. These are pension, housing, education and healthcare. These are from the World Economic Forum. (Please feel free to dismiss them as they influence the global holders of economic powers and not academics).

The four pillars at the minimum should be not for profits to provide the eco-system for a middle class to exist and thrive. The middle class is the ultimate stabilizer of Society. In fact, in may first world nations, these pillars are often subsidized to maintain imbalances caused by external and internal disruptions.

Well done in pricing these to markets as in our case with Pension (CPF), Housing (HDB), Healthcare (Medisave) and now Education. Going even further with pricing to markets on necessities; water being the most recent move. Education is big business and its growth aided by students loans that have already gripped the millennials elsewhere who have pursued studies that the new economy does not need. In fact, the Scholar/General tribe is behind the curve to only now stumble on this goldmine.

All the extractions are into the consolidated pool of the SWFs for foreign investments. Are they trading in foreign securities (i.e.short term punts) or really long term investors ? Leave it to you to figure it out.
In essence, the economy is like a Venture Capital Fund.Like a squid with insatiable appetite and with minimal transparency. In short, the governance is worst than that of a VC fund.

You can only close the growing income/wealth gap by immigration of real talents that innovate and will share their largesse with you. firstly, there is plenty of global competition for such talents and the type you have here largely do not fit the criteria of global talents. Secondly, you must be dreaming that they are not mercenaries here for the tax perks, etc. Thirdly, in the internet age, real talents increasingly do not need to relocate. Even if you want to run a VC economy, you are not smart with recruitments.

No angst is required because the fawning 70% applaud. Cheer them on. Amazing that the millennials here are so disconnected with global trends and still hang around on trips from the spins of a ruling White Tribe that is already entrenched.

Whether we will become a technology country in fifty years depends on what they do, or what they dare to do. Presently I don’t see any big adjustments of the education policies. • Seriously?:

    This article is nonsense.

The issues many in the workforce (employed and unemployed) are facing is the tendency to keep looking in the box within defined boundaries. Singaporeans are mostly trained for structured environments and to take instructions.

What Ong is referring to is brining the entire education system to include what is in the box as well as what is outside of it. And what is outside of the box is something that is intangible and difficult to impart to educators and students alike.

  • The ideal situation:

Every man and woman should have the opportunity to be educated to the extent of their interests and capabilities.
The husband should be the provider.
Woman should stay at home to look after the needs of the husband and most importantly her children. This duty comes first,
When the children could look after themselves, the woman according to circumstances and if she finds it fulfilling could go out and work.
The world is now topsy turvy when both the man and the woman leave the home to work.
The children are being taken care of by a third party which is obviously not healthy.
Woman are doubly burdened when she has to work and be a mother at the same time.
Especially in countries that are not sympathetic and understanding of the role of a woman, it will lead to the disengagement and even disintegration of the family unit as is happening all over the world.
The over-indulgence and economic emphasis and even glamorization of the educated working woman (with a husband and children) has destroyed shamefully many a society over the last 5 decades.
A wholesome family is by and large a picture of a working provider husband and a stay-at-home wife and mother. And that will make for a better world.
The system should be geared into the cultivation and the growth of happy families, and education should be open lifelong opportunities, and joyful and fulfilling for everybody.

  • Doubting Thomas:

Aren’t we at least 30 years too late with ‘overwhelming adjustments”?
Like we’ve been Very late with housing, medical facilities, public transport?
Like we’ve only Just realised that being promoted based on meritocracy means
you get promoted because of Performance and Ability and Not academic grades….

How can products, like Ong, of the stifling, no-thinking-please education system of
the last 40 years come up with workable suggestions for “overwhelming adjustments”?
And who will teach the kids in this new universe?? All those who grew up in a thinking
environment have retired, died or left the country.

Is the PAP aware that if people are actually taught how to think — a major purpose
of education — that it is highly likely to be voted out? That no one will believe
claims like Spore has free speech, Raising the cost of water 30% will not raise
prices of a slew of things, Old folk collect cardboard for exercise/to save the
environment, and Wee Kim Wee counts as the 1st elected president even though
he was appointed, just because he carried out the duties of an elected president?

Ong’s pronouncement sounds like fake news. Or is he auditioning for the role of
a clown? If the latter, he’s doing a fair job but must realise he’s got Lots of competition!
